Ryan Rasmussen Koko Architecture 2013
Internship Summary Koko Architecture + Design was like family. I had many ideas of what my experience doing residency might be like, but I never imagined that working in an office could be so much fun. The firm I was working work was extremely knowledgeable and even more welcoming. The Koko team was comprised of eight people total, two principals, six architects, and one administrative assistant. All of the architects were relatively young, knowledgable, and like myself, hungry for knowledge. At the time I joined Koko, they had just hired two recent graduates and were experiencing tremendous growth. Within the course of a few weeks, the firm had doubled in size and new projects seemed to multiply overnight. Although I was less experienced in terms of education and work, I felt like that did not deter me from having an equal part in the design process. It felt like everyone, including the principals were equals. Many of the projects I worked on or was brought into required me to work with a colleague. This type of work environment encouraged me to ask for help when I needed it, freely give my input, and made for a pleasant introduction into the world of architecture. I learned everyday about the business and social side of architecture, the joys and perils of working with different clients, and how quickly unexpected problems can arise in projects. I had the opportunity to learn a new drafting program, Vectorworks, and use many of the skills that were taught at the University level. Although many of the initial projects were simple and at a small scale, this helped familiarize me with the typical process of how things get built. Many of these smaller introductory projects were actually realized and are regularly used by Koko which was incredibly motivating. After gaining familiarity with the building process, and eventually the computer program, I was introduced to larger projects and increasingly gain more responsibility. Many of the hands on skills, such as measuring a space to draw up a plan, and explaining ideas to contractors who cannot read your drawings, or just meeting with clients and resolving their needs cannot be learned in schools but can only be gained through experience. Koko was especially good about giving me time to explore the city, visit construction sites, and visit local “archi-dork (as my boss, Adam affectionately calls them) sites. Through countless site visits and meetings with contractors and clients, I became more aware of the real world problems that arise when practicing architecture. I feel especially lucky with my experience because I had the opportunity to design at a variety of scales. From smaller pieces of millwork in the office, to a large highrise on the other side of the globe I was able to gain a wide variety of insight into how ideas are realized. I believe that this experience has not only been beneficial and helpful to me academically, but the knowledge and experiences gained while working at Koko will have a long lasting impact. 2

The original design proposal for the house was created about DWG NO. a year before I was assigned to work on the project. At SECTION that point none of the more intricate- or finer details of the SHEET NO. house were flushed out. As new projects came up, the Yang DWG NO. WALL SECTION residence was put on hold. -

WORK SURFACE Location: Koko Studio, NY / Duration: 1 week / Program: Renovation
Briefly before joining Koko, they had relocated their offices and were still in the process of moving in and organizing. After getting a bit more settled in, the need for a large work table emerged. I was asked to create simple drawings of a work surface that could double as storage space for materials and drawings. The base of the table is four existing storage cabinets, minimizing material cost and labor. It was nice to see a project, although simple, used almost everyday.

ROLNICK BUNK BEDS Location: Brooklyn, NY / Duration: 1 week / Program: Bunk Bed
Former clients had requested that we design a two custom beds for their children. For the first bed, the requirements were relatively simple, The bed had to be a full size bed that could deploy another full size trundle bed in case visitors came to stay. Their request was relatively flexible and did not have to be a bunk bed. I explored three options and modeled them in a 3D program to help better understand the dimensions required to make this project come to life. The client also request some sort of storage or shelving areas for books or toys. The request for the second set of custom beds was for their three boys, and was a bit more specific. The bunk beds were to not only serve as sleeping spaces when needed, but were also to serve as loft or play areas as well. The boys had a collection of Lego which they treasured and it was requested that we design special display units for their creations.

Hawkins International Location: Flatiron District, NY / Duration: 6 weeks / Program: Office Renovation
Hawkins International is a public relations company based in New York. Much like Koko, they too were moving offices. I joined the design team shortly after the construction for their new offices had begun. However, since the project was fast tracked, there was still much detailing and millwork that needed to get designed. The client had specifically requested special requirements for a conference table. The table had to be modular for easy storage, with a unique aesthetic. The conference table would not only be the central location for formal meetings, but also needed to be used during parties as well. In addition to simple millwork and work desks, the owner of the company asked for a one-of-a-kind shelving system that she use in her office. I was asked to implement the “shiro-shelving design into her office. The reception desk was another interesting design challenge as it was the first thing you would see upon entering the space. Using a series of 3-form acrylic planes to create volumes, the goal was to try and create a floating glowing desk that greeted visitors upon entry.

Schwartz Residence Location: Flatiron District, NY / Duration: 4 weeks / Program: Residential Millwork
This project was a very small scale renovation and addition to existing millwork in a studio apartment in the Flatiron District. The main request from the client was to keep it aesthetically traditional while dividing the room into two spaces. It was also requested that we optimized all the wall space so that he could store his expansive book collection. Inspired by a few photos the client had sent of the type of aesthetic he liked, a working desk was used as an implied partition breaking the studio apartment into two separate spaces. I saw this project from it’s inception, measuring his studio apartment and then drawing up the base plans before then implementing the requested millwork. Breaking from what we normally do at Koko, I was introduced into the design process for drawing up crown moulding. Although it was not my most exciting or favorite design, I was excited to have had the experience of designing in a more traditional way.

I also gained a greater understanding of SERVE THEIR PURPOSE. Taipei Highrise Location: Taipei, Taiwan / Duration: 9 weeks / Program: Residential Mixed-use
This highrise in Taipei, Taiwan was designed in conjunction with a property development firm based in Taiwan. The client requested we implement a museum showcasing his oil production company, but was otherwise aimed to be a flexible mixed-use residential building in this rapidly growing part of the city. Koko worked closely in collaboration with local architects to fully understand the details of the code and other parameters we were required to follow by law. We split into three different design teams and wound up with three different iterations to present to the property development company. I collaborated with one colleague to develop the main idea and was in charge of producing images and renderings to convey the idea of the space to the property developers and the client. We were given a corner lot, but unfortunately one of the property owners didn’t want to rebuild and wanted to keep their existing building as is. This gave us an L-shaped building footprint to work with. In order to make the building become an iconic landmark and make sure the building didn’t get lost in the existing urban fabric, the main idea was that we would create a unique artful screen like ones made traditionally in that part of the world. Drawing from local traditions and ideas we deconstructed a cherry blossom and abstracted it to create a screen that would appear to be moving as you drove past the building. This moray affect would be achieved by layering super-graphics painted on the building, and similar graphics perforated into metal mesh.
the overall function of the building keeping in mind ways to serve the public as well. What was originally a back of house alley-access service area will be transformed into a publicly used floating garden area. After many iterations and renderings we were able to consolidate our three separate ideas and compile a presentation that one of our principal architects was able to present.
Some alterations to the program were made as well to improve
