TOWN LAKE ROWING CENTER Professor: Ed Richardson
One of the most intriguing processes of rowing is the act of launching and storing the boat. Rowers would begin their ritual as they entered the monolithic rowing center. Emerging from the bunker, rowers would walk to the designated path that housed their specific racing shell. The crunch of the gravel and the long procession to the pod was deliberate, encouraging rowers to mentally prepare for their rowing routine. Finally, the rower would arrive at a specific pod, and launch the boat. Each pod is able to accommodate anywhere from a two-person rowing shell to an eight-person rowing shell. The roofs are accessible, providing patrons and visitors access to views of the lake and the rowers.

BUS STOP Professor: Alan Knox
Sit
Stand
The bus stop was developed through section with three primary actions in mind: sit, stand, and observe. While waiting for the bus, people generally seek shelter, especially during the hot summer months. Bus stops also provide information on routes and can be a medium for communication among the community. During the day the bus stop acts as a shelter and at night transforms into a beacon. A soft glow provides patrons with a sense of safety as they wait while a blue glowing light indicates the next bus is minutes away.

DUNE ECOLOGY PAVILION Professor: Coleman Coker
Partners: Peter Binder, Sara Fallahi, Jorge Faz, Kimberly Harding, Christina Hunter, Barron Peper, Li-Yin Rui, Shelby Sickler
Working closely with the University of Texas Marine Science Institute, the studio was asked to design and build a shaded structure that could help educate patrons on the importance of the surrounding dune scape. Before the schematic design phase, research was conducted on what purpose the dunes serve in coastal regions. The dunes provide a natural buffer zone for high risk flood areas. The dunes serve as a habitat for many unique species of animals. The unique placement of the dunes also serves to naturally filter the seawater to freshwater. The dune ecology pavilion aims to serve mainly middle school students that will visit the site on educational trips. Like the wetland education center, located on the northern part of the site, MSI plans to extend and eventually expand their dune ecology education program. In addition to designing an education pavilion, we wanted to make sure that the design could be expanded upon and over the course of time implement a trail system extending into the dunes. By doing this, the ultimate end goal would not only be to create a pavilion that acts as a destination point, but as a point of departure into the landscape as well.

SOCIAL HOUSING IVY-SUR-SEINE Professor: Igor Siddiqui
Partner: Jorge Faz
Located on the Ivry-sur-Seine is a plot of land inhabited by homeless people living in the abandoned industrial complex of what used to be a factory. This once lively area has fallen into disrepair. Much of the surrounding area has become nothing more than a polluted industrial complex. The main goal of the project was to create a social housing block that would act as a catalyst in bringing life to area. Through combining the analysis of the site, and producing a single modular unit that would morph according to the site’s conditions, housing blocks, circulation paths, and pocket parks were proposed across a one-hectare strip of the site. SLIPCASTING SWARMS Professor: Igor Siddiqui
Partner: Jackie Hensy
Using a swarm logic generator, swarms were confined into a bounding box with a sphere in the center. The input parameters were manipulated to mimic animal species that swarm. These input parameters included: velocity, speed, proximity, collective direction, freedom to wander, and population. The intention of the final design was to translate a point cloud into a volumetric form. Some of the forms were created in a way that prevented them from simply being 3D printed, and rather, had to be realized through different means. Through CNC routing, making plaster molds, and slip-casting we were able to capture a time lapse of a swarming body.

Professors: John Blood, Elizabeth Danze, Danilo Udovicki, Igor Siddiqui
Sketchbook explorations from a semester-long study abroad travel program. These sketches reflect typologies, projections, and crossings inspired by buildings and urban infrastructure while traveling abroad in Europe. Drawings range from quick sketches to more time intensive compositions of contemporary and classical architecture. Countries visited were: Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Spain, Portugal and France.

Taipei Highrise Location: Taipei, Taiwan / Duration: 9 weeks / Program: Residential Mixed-use
This highrise in Taipei, Taiwan was designed in conjunction with a property development firm based in Taiwan. The client requested we implement a museum showcasing his oil production company, but was otherwise aimed to be a flexible mixed-use residential building in this rapidly growing part of the city. Koko worked closely in collaboration with local architects to fully understand the details of the code and other parameters we were required to follow by law. We split into three different design teams and wound up with three different iterations to present to the property development company. I collaborated with one colleague to develop the main idea and was in charge of producing images and renderings to convey the idea of the space to the property developers and the client. We were given a corner lot, but unfortunately one of the property owners didn’t want to rebuild and wanted to keep their existing building as is. This gave us an L-shaped building footprint to work with. In order to make the building become an iconic landmark and make sure the building didn’t get lost in the existing urban fabric, the main idea was that we would create a unique artful screen like ones made traditionally in that part of the world. Drawing from local traditions and ideas we deconstructed a cherry blossom and abstracted it to create a screen that would appear to be moving as you drove past the building. This moray affect would be achieved by layering super-graphics painted on the building, and similar graphics perforated into metal mesh.
the overall function of the building keeping in mind ways to serve the public as well. What was originally a back of house alley-access service area will be transformed into a publicly used floating garden area. After many iterations and renderings we were able to consolidate our three separate ideas and compile a presentation that one of our principal architects was able to present.
Some alterations to the program were made as well to improve
