Ryan @ BATTICK

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGNER (PART II)

@Ryan Battick

I am an architectural designer and a graduate from the Manchester School of Architecture. I have a passion for solving problems through creative design. Architecture gives me the opportunity to sculpt beautiful pieces of art from space, light and materials. I am interested in understanding how architecture and the built environment impacts humans and communities and how design can change the way we live. Phenomenology, psychology and the philosophy of beauty form the basis of my design personality. In previous projects I have focused on themes such as urban identities and branding, socio-economic urbanistic theories, urban morphology and sustainability. I am interested in the future of architecture and my approach to design is a holistic one, combining, technology, theory, anthropology and ultimately, creativity.

Education

- The Caribbean School of Architecture (2015-current ) Masters of Architecture (M.Arch 1) - The University Of Manchester (2011-2014) First class honours, Bachelors of Architecture (B.Arch), Architecture - DeCarteret College Jamaica ( 2009-2011) A Levels - Physics (A) Mathematics (A) Art and design (A + Caribbean regional award) Communication Studies (A)

Professional Experience - Architectural Assistant ( August 2014- August 2015) Gensler And Associates - London Office I worked on retail, hospitality and residential projects located in Dubai, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United States. With these projects I completed a number of tasks which were necessary to take projects from the concept stage, straight through to the construction documents. During my time there I designed concepts, developed designs, created and presented presentations to clients, produced renders and 3D models and produced drawing sets. I learnt how to work with clients, engineers and consultants. I also used my time there to meet and learn from designers who are experts in their fields, from master planning to residential projects. I was exposed to real ongoing projects, and learnt the practical side of getting buildings built. - Graphic Designer ( 2013-Current) Christ Church Manchester I am currently a part time graphic designer. I receive commissions from my church, where I am given the topic of a themed series or an event. I am expected to brand the series, and produce a set of graphics. I produce these campaigns on strict time and financial constraints.

- Executive member of Manchester Student Society of Architecture ( 2012- 2013) Manchester School of architecture - Work Experience // Architectural Assistant ( April 2012- May 2012) Landscape Projects- Manchester Office I was a part of a competition team as a student architect. I conducted site analyses and contributed to the design process by drawing and developing rudimentary plans and sections. I observed and took part in the whole process and learnt a practical approach to design given the real-world constraints.

Projects - Pomona Island project : I completed this project in my first year at the Manchester School of Architecture. I looked into spatial relationships, connections with site and context and progressed my model building abilities. - Serpents Cavern project : This project was my first project that went on to be constructed. I worked on design and construction with a team of students. We then won a student design award upon it’s completion. - Ironbridge kayak centre project : This is a design project that I completed in my second year at the Manchester School of Architecture. I learnt how to produce high quality drawings (plans, sections and elevations), I studied how to design at the 1:10 scale and I developed my threedimensional modelling abilities.

- Hulme regeneration project : During this project explored the causes and effects of urban degeneration. I did extensive research into how urban communities work. I proposed a scheme of re-branding the community, and bringing back the identity of the place. I designed a response in the form of a community building and theatre. - Nexus centre project: This is my final year project. During this year long project, I was able to explore my interests and ideas. I chose to study climate change and the future of architecture in an urban setting. I designed a building that combined the hybrid programme of a vertical farm and an urban transport centre. This design was a response to the increasing population, density and natural disasters within cities.

- Architectural Study Trips Berlin : During my study trip to Germany, I studied the historical and political influences of a city on architecture. I began to look into urbanism and urban planning and design. Barcelona : I went on a study trip to Barcelona to explore the urbanism of the city. I am currently writing an essay on the Urban experience and architectural decisions that influence the spatial experience of Barcelona’s Gracia district. Milan/Rome: I visited the world expo of 2015, located in Milan . This was great exposure to over 200 pavilions which showcased the best architecture from around the world. I received the chance to study pavilions designed by designers and architects such as Thomas Heatherwick, Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid and Norman Foster.
