PUBLISHERS’ LETTER More than ever, our kitchens today express our spirits. What's more, we depend on them. They are places of safety, strength, and beauty, with cabinetry, countertops, tile backslashes, lightening, and appliances all factoring into the overall design. Sometimes, when it comes to entertaining or serving large families, the demands of a kitchen can be so complex that it requires highly knowledgeable and specialized designers for an exceptional kitchen to emerge. Throughout this entire issue, you will discover exceptional kitchens in architecturally designed homes, as well as leading kitchen designers in the Annapolis area. In addition, you will find in our professional resource guide where to go for appliances, hardware, tile, marble, granite and more. What also unifies our issue are homes with distinct personalities. A waterfront lot on the Severn becomes the perfect place to build a new home saturated with color. In another residence, four boys have a downstairs with a basketball court and gym, not just for rainy days but every day. In a third "tree house" in Epping Forest, leafy views and organic neutral decor come together to create an especially serene nest. There is much more, but you will have to see for yourself. We hope you enjoy the work of the talented builders and designers who crafted the homes in this issue. Enjoy,

ROBERT INDIANA: The Mitchell Gallery, at St. John’s College, is hosting an exhibition of the important artist Robert Indiana. Indiana, along with artists like Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, and Roy Lichtenstein, is one of the seminal Pop artists who first gained international attention in the 1960s. Indiana often adopts a common word such as “Eat,” “Love,” or “Hope” and paints the word with clean, hard edges. The artist gives the works an appearance (and it is only an appearance) of a stenciled, somewhat mechanical feel, rather than pursuing the cliché of “personal expression.” The paintings are more than just a single word, however. As in his “She” and “He” works, the words are structured as an intricate composition of shapes, such as a circle and star, which intersect or push into one another. Indiana often works in silkscreen so that he can reproduce a wordpainting almost endlessly and in various colors. Silkscreen allows for repetition; at the same time, the process inevitably leads to variations from one print to the next. Indiana has described his work, specifically his “Peace” series, as “one long poem.” The repetition of the imagery turns a common word into an iconic image. To clarify this point, consider that images of Christ and the Madonna, endlessly reproduced, were the most prevalent icons in the Medieval ages. Indiana creates an icon for our era by producing signage-like paintings that highlight

three- or four-letter declarative words, such as “Love,” “Eat,” or "Die." The “Love” image is Indiana’s most famous work since he produced it as a large public sculpture, as well as a postage stamp. The word “Love” suggests romance or other deep feelings about a person, object, or experience. In Indiana’s hands, the word is emptied of romantic, erotic, highly emotional, or even literary connotations, and presented strictly as a colorful iconic form, with the carefully rolling “O” giving it an exacting yet playful compositional character. The exhibition at the Mitchell Gallery opens on March 8 and runs through April 22, 2018. For gallery hours and more information, visit sjc.edu/annapolis/mitchell-gallery.

A HOUSE of many colors BY CAROL SORGEN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALEX SZOPA Our couple, longtime residents of Severna Park, fell in love with the perfect waterfront property, the one they had been envisioning in their minds for years. Unfortunately, the weathered home sitting upon this prime piece of property had small windows and charms so submerged they were all but invisible. In fact, the house was the polar opposite of their ideal: a shingled house, reminiscent of the elegant residences in the Baltimore neighborhood of Roland Park. Extreme situations call for equally extreme measures. The couple turned to interior designer Jay Jenkins, president of Jenkins Baer Associates in Baltimore, who called on Baltimore architect Vincent Greene and custom builder John Riley of Riley Custom Homes in Annapolis. Larry Rosen, president of Jack Rosen Custom Kitchens in Rockville, took care of the kitchen. After demolishing the existing house on the site, Greene set about designing a home that was “all about the water and more. Designing a "substantial-sized" house on a limited building site was a challenge, says Greene, but he made it work by going "tall and square." Two levels with a partial third floor incorporate indoor/outdoor spaces with screened and covered porches, and "layered" spaces allow for light and views to be available throughout the house. A unique feature of the house is the circular, glassed-in great room that affords panoramic views of the Severn River. When it came to the interior design, Jenkins appreciated the fact that the homeowners were "fearless" when it came to color selections. "We introduced a world of color in both paints and fabrics," says Jenkins. Using Benjamin Moore paints, Jenkins chose such striking tones as deep russet, cobalt blue, and butter yellow. Crisp white trim and hand-scraped wood and stone floors give the colors even more pizzazz, while more muted tones in the stairwell and bedrooms lend a touch of serenity.

The bathroom offers a respite from vibrant colors in the rest of the home. The sunken tub is subtly accentuated by custom panels.
One of the homeowners' favorite spaces is the kitchen, and to realize the vision that he and the homeowners had in mind, Jenkins relied on Rosen. The original design concept of the kitchen, says Rosen, is still evident in the finished project, and includes a unique circular design on the cabinets, “Barn door” front panels on the refrigerator and freezer, a plate rack, appliance garages, and the generously sized long island. The lady of the house is a serious cook and Rosen took that into account when incorporating a 48” Wolf range, along with Wolf warming drawer, microwave, and countertop oven, in addition to an integrated Sub Zero refrigerator and freezer. Also on the homeowners' must-have list was as much storage as possible, which Rosen accomplished with drawer base cabinets, pull-out spice cabinets, and custom tray storage cabinets. The cabinets were fashioned by Rutt Handcrafted Cabinetry in New Holland, Pennsylvania. "Rutt really nailed down the details of the custom 'barn door' appliance front panels, which are a focal point of the kitchen," says Rosen. The colors of the tile backsplash are echoed in the warm yellow-painted and

glazed cabinets, the colors chosen from Benjamin Moore. A multi-piece crown detail circles the room and was created by Riley Custom Home Builder, whose faux finisher expertly matched the perimeter cabinet paint and glaze color for the crown molding. With the "vision and discerning eye" of the client, and the skills of Jenkins, Greene, Riley, and Rosen, the homeowners have their dream home and something rather rare: a house of many colors. Palladian windows let in extra natural light and are left bare to better enjoy Severn River views.
Cottage-style windows ensure the bathroom has abundant daylight.
Fifteen months ago, had you walked down this crumbling driveway overgrown with a tapestry of neglected trees and creeping vines, you would have encountered a dilapidated house—the last vestige of a stately manor that once served a prominent Baltimore family. But now, a year and some later, the gloom has parted, the work of a dedicated team that has restored the property’s former magnificence. Visiting now, you would see a classic contemporary home that affords a new family a lifestyle on the water, where four young boys can learn to sail and relish their surroundings. From a basketball court in the basement to cottage windows that capture the Severn River’s serenity, the design emphasizes both form and function. The homeowners selected architect Marta Hansen for her creative eye and unrelenting effort to provide quality at fair cost. Because the site was so restricted by steep slopes and Chesapeake Bay zoning regulations, the architect worked intimately with Drum Loyka, of Drum, Loyka & Associates, LLC, to establish the property’s canvas and navigate the permitting process. The narrow footprint dictated by the site meant that almost every room gained bright light and a view of the water. To complement this definition, the architect added wall paneling and punctuated pendant lighting to connect hallways, and a stacked staircase to unify the home’s three levels. The tower atop the house was crowned with a ribbon of clerestory windows for additional illumination. Gate One Builders, the firm that had renovated the family’s Eastport home, was brought on early in the project. “The clients were fun,” principal Matt Long said. “They gave us liberty to do some fun things in the basement with the basketball court and allowed us to develop something unique in every room with the interior trim work.” Though the basement presented challenges in staging, Long relished the opportunity to source new materials, such as professional grade sports court flooring. As with any large family, mealtimes claim an outsize role in daily schedules, and so great emphasis was placed on establishing an orderly kitchen. Gray Owl custom cabinets, dual dishwashers, and white marble countertops accommodate the relentless cadence of activity. Joined by a coffered ceiling, the kitchen transitions seamlessly into the living room, which shares a stone chimney with the fireplace on the covered porch, another favorite place for relaxing. Wall paneling and pendant lighting, along with the stacked staircase, unify the home's three levels.
Vol. 9, No. 1 2018 37
Wormy chestnut floors from the pre-existing manor house are used in the kitchen and living room.
Outside, Hansen used cedar shingles to ensure protection from the elements and graceful aging. “The heavily textured shingles contrast beautifully with the crisp white trim, highlighting exterior details on the balconies, porches, trellises and mixed-slope roof,” Hansen said. Meanwhile, the house’s youngest tenants make use of a second-floor deck as a water balloon launching site. Beyond their treehouse and sneaky closet, the toy room, a kid-only hideout tucked under the stairs, is the boys’ other space to run riot. “During the day, it looks like a bomb went off,” the boys’ mom confessed. “We let them scale the walls, tip over chairs, build forts, and race car tracks… the only thing we ask is that they put everything away at night.” Like the rest of the house, the room is conspicuously bare of window treatments, so that the walls don’t seem to contain the boys’ play so much as connect it to the outside. The best homes anticipate the future; they meet present needs but age strategically. For adult inhabitants, that means ground-floor bathrooms with lift bars and wheelchair-friendly door frames. For young boys, it means rooms allocated in birth order, each with water views and builtin closets. Wood-hewn lockers in the mudroom have charging stations for eventual devices and roomy displays for the trophies sure to come.

The coffered ceiling from the kitchen extends into the living room, unifying the spaces.
But the past gets its moment too since the homeowners took pains to preserve the property’s history. From the floorboards of the old manor house, they salvaged wormy chestnut, a species of wood that went extinct in the 1900s. They also refurbished several windows and a kitchen sink, which gained a second life in the mudroom. One weekend during construction, and again this past Thanksgiving, the former caretakers even paid the family a visit. “I took care of this property for 40 years, my Daddy built the stairs going down to the water,” a teary-eyed Don Cullember said. “I’m so glad you kept the tree!” Mr. Cullember’s beloved tree is now protected by a new stacked stone sitting wall. The structure, hand built by Exterior Image, also serves as a safety stop for the family’s children. In time, the yard will fill out with shrubs, flowers, and native trees—the hundreds of plantings selected by landscape architect Heike Nolker to revive a once popular overlook. And so it goes, the story of a house, where past, present and future meet: the hands that built it, the family that loves it, and the new memories it will help to create. AH
The homeowner gives the kids free reign, as long as they put their toys away when they are done.
A private gym with basketball court on the lower level is big enough for all four boys and their friends.

The home is situated on a narrow lot, which means most of the rooms are bright and have water views.

A TREE HOUSE in Epping Forest
The home sits atop a hillside. Only one tree was cut down during its construction; the forest is part of the view.
THIS BIOPHILIC HOME, AND ITS DÉCOR, RECONNECTS THE INHABITANTS WITH NATURE BY KYMBERLY TAYLOR | PHOTOGRAPHY BY GWIN HUNT

Interior designer Gina Fitzsimmons integrated organic forms into the decor, including the teak wood table and tree ovals lining the stairwell.

ANNAPOLIS HOME
Blue is one of the few contrasting colors on the home's first floor, and meant to mirror the sky.
Philip D. Goodman gave the popular phrase “getting back to my roots” a new meaning when he built a house on a hillside in Epping Forest. In fact Goodman was almost born in a sled traversing the frosty trails of this quaint waterfront community, founded in the 1920s. His mother went into labor during a snow storm, but back in the 1960s, the roads were all but impassable. She was towed out on a sled and made it to the hospital just in time. So, in a sense, building a new house in this Annapolis community was like coming home. However, the journey to this new dwelling was long and took years of patience; waterfront is very hard to find in this popular Annapolis community. When the 100 x 110-foot waterfront lot and summer cottage came on the market in early 2014, Goodman pounced. Six months later he signed a contract. “At first, I lived in the
original cottage and tried to fix it up. Friends called it an adult fort.” When he did tear it down in 2016, he replaced it with what many of his friends call “a treehouse,” built in collaboration with his brother, engineer Mike Helfrich, of Gamma Engineering, and Annapolis architect Janet Harrison, of J. Harrison Architects. Goodman and Harrison are like-minded: They love trees, but not in a superficial sense. Goodman is drawn to their tranquil beauty. Harrison, a proponent of biophilic design, values them as an extension of the home that invites occupants to reconnect with nature. Biophilic design is an architectural approach that seeks to restore our innate desire to be at one with the natural world. Views are favored as are organic materials, natural ventilation, and accessibility to nature.
Vol. 9, No. 1 2018 57
The tile pattern in the backsplash in the kitchen is made up of hand-cast subway tiles in a gloss white, with the mosaic basket-weave accent tiles in Travertine and Calcutta marble.
Proponents of this architectural school believe biophilic design can reduce stress, boost creativity, enhance clarity of thought, improve well-being, and expedite healing. Harrison explains that sensory access to nature, visual and non-visual, is often the piece missing from “green” architecture, which decreases the environmental impact of the built world, but does not necessarily address human reconnection with the natural world.
to heat the home passively through the trees. The trees, in turn, cool the home in the summer when the sun is higher. In addition to being practical, the south-facing views are spectacular. With this in mind, maybe even unconsciously, Goodman bucked the trend favoring manicured lawns ending at a shore line. Instead, he left his tree-covered hillside wild. “People would tell me to cut them down. But I wanted to leave the trees. I told them I could see the water just fine.”
The Epping Forest project has many biophilic elements, Harrison explains. The home follows the contours of the hillside and is designed to make use of the sun, shade, and wind. The north side facing the driveway has more massing to withstand northerly winds. The south side faces the hillside and sun, which is lower in the sky in winter, allowing rays
Residential biophilic design is often subtle, something to be sensed rather than seen. Interior designer Gina Fitzsimmons of Fitzsimmons Design Associates felt an immediate connection once inside the leafy hideaway. “I felt like I was in a special treehouse…nestled in the trees and kind of in the middle of a forest.”
A basket-weave tile design adds a rustic touch to the stove surround.

ANNAPOLIS HOME
Despite its narrow lot, the approximately 4200 square-foot home in Epping Forest is almost invisible to its neighbors. It is built for different stages of life. Later, the homeowner may add an elevator.
Fitzsimmons surveyed the space during its construction and chose all the tile and cabinetry, using a serene palate of creams, beiges, and blues, influenced by the earth, trees, sky, and water just outside. With subtlety, Fitzsimmons incorporated nature’s colors and forms. A casual comfortable feel was her goal—there are very few sharp edges, unsettling colors, or asymmetrical shapes. Everything converses, there are no superfluous accessories. Fitzsimmons has the rare ability to channel a home owner’s personality into a décor that is fresh and satisfying. Some of the furnishings, such as the teakwood log table in the sitting area, are pure natural forms that attract one’s attention. “It creates an organic focal point—as you enter the front door, your eye is drawn to the back of the house,” she says. “Gina was a large part of making this house what it is,” says Goodman, gesturing to a spacious great room spanning the length of the home. “Left to my own devices, I’m a white-wall kind of guy.” The décor and design scheme work together. The home has a gentle quality to it, as if extending its own calm boughs to guests and to the world. From the dock in the twilight, Goodman gazes up at his home silhouetted against the ridge.
“The house is an old soul…friends who come over find if very comfortable…it kinds of feels like your old favorite sweater,” he says. Goodman is home at last. Or, perhaps a part of him never really left Epping Forest, whose winding paths and coves guard the secret joys of his childhood. After all, who is ever completely grown up? He’s made his way back to familiar waters, trading his “adult fort” for something even better: a tree house. It’s all working out. AH RESOURCES: ARCHITECTURE: J. HOW TO DESIGN THE PERFECT
Shower Enclosure BY BONNIE BURCHAM PHOTOGRAPHY BY GEOFFREY HODGDON
A shower door is one of your bathroom’s most important design elements. When selecting one for your home, be careful! This is not an item to purchase on the internet. I’ve heard the stories and the last thing you need is a catastrophe. So, before you fill your cart and hit “check out” or forge ahead with your contractor, consider the following tips.
VISUALIZE Get out, visit showrooms, and view the latest shower doors and design configurations. Open and close each door. Step inside and out. Check out the thickness of the glass. Assessing various displays will help you visualize how the enclosure would look in your home.
ASSESS AND MEASURE YOUR ENCLOSURE The type of door you choose will depend largely on the shape and layout of your shower. Send a shower door professional to visit your home to get exact measurements of your shower/bath area. This is one of the most important steps to ensure that your enclosure will fit precisely.
shower, which is usually the least expensive, offers traditional style with full door magnets and drip rail system.
SELECT GLASS AND HARDWARE FINISHES Glass selections range from clear glass, which keeps the space bright and open to patterns that offer a distinct design or privacy. Choose hardware finishes to coordinate with your existing bathroom fixtures.
INSTALLATION This is perhaps the most important part of your purchase. Some homeowners purchase expensive shower doors online or even at a “big box store” only to find they don’t quite fit or that they are too complicated to install. Shower doors are specialty items. A master craftsman will ensure the doors fit properly and you will enjoy it for many years to come. AH
CHOOSE THE TYPE OF DOOR With your bathroom’s configuration in mind, you can choose from a range of frameless, semi-frameless or framed doors. Doors can swing or slide open. There are enclosures that can be adapted for steam applications. Frameless enclosures have the least amount of hardware and a thicker glass for a truly luxurious enclosure. The semi-frameless is a great alternative to a frameless if you want a beautiful custom enclosure without the expense of a frameless. Finally, a fully framed

CONTEMPORARY DESIGN, TIMELESS COMFORT Throughout our history, Loewen has delivered an unrivaled aesthetic that both complements and inspires changes in architectural trends. The timeless comfort that radiates from our Douglas Fir and Mahogany windows and doors provides the perfect contrast of warmth to contemporary design, while the ever-changing patinas of our copper and bronze clad products offer rich, deep textures that are both contemporary and future-facing in their own right. We craft our windows and doors with aesthetic value that endures — just like the long-lasting performance of all our products. We look forward to helping you realize your vision.
