PUBLISHERS’ LETTER When we founded Annapolis Home ten years ago, some folks told us we would not last long. “Why?” we asked, only to hear that Annapolis would not support a fine home magazine. Others said “You will run out of houses to feature!” Yet, over the past ten years, this has never happened. We continuously dig deep, mining the Chesapeake region to bring you historical riches, architectural gems, and beautiful custom-built estates with fascinating inhabitants and origins. We are proud to acquaint you with the professionals conceiving and building our cities, landscapes, and waterfronts and to tell their stories. They are your stories too. As you leaf through this biennial issue of Custom Building and Fine Design award winners, you will see examples of how our community expresses itself, diversely and even unconsciously, through our architecture, natural landscapes, waterways, and built environments. Entries are submitted blindly and judged by an independent jury. Read on to learn about the winter pansy’s literary and medicinal heritage, about Murray Hill, and much more. We wish you a happy and healthy New Year!

Robert’s Picks The pandemic has spurred many of us to appreciate our homes anew or to make significant improvements so we can enjoy them more. However, there are events to beckon you outdoors and to stimulate your mind and senses.

1

One of nature’s most beautiful mysteries is bioluminescence, or the ability of living things to produce their own light. Like fireflies, some light up to communicate. Some forms of marine life use it to lure their prey or to camouflage. Learn about these creatures and more at programs offered by Pickering Creek Audubon Center, Easton, MD: www.pickering.audubon.org.

2

Now that most museums and performance spaces are temporarily closed, it’s a good time to discover or rediscover local outdoor adventures. The Adkins Arboretum in Ridgely, MD on the Eastern Shore is 400 acres of woodlands, meadows, wetlands, and gardens. Each season offers surprises and something special to experience, including the winter. For information, visit www.adkinsarboretum.org.

3

If you have never tried sporting clay, I highly recommend it. First of all, we have a most beautiful sporting clay facility on the Wye River: The Point at Pintail. This is a well-run, professional operation, and if you are unfamiliar with guns and the sport, you can take a course, as I did. Even if you don’t participate yourself, you will enjoy the river and the landscape. www.pointatpintail.com.

4

Buy a nice bottle of wine (or your preferred drink), relax, and enjoy the Annapolis Symphony as they perform for you in your home. On Saturday, February 27 at 8 p.m., the Symphony will live stream a concert featuring Felix Mendelssohn, Richard Strauss, Florence Price, and Aaron Copland. You only need to purchase one ticket for your household. For tickets and to learn about future concerts in the virtual masterworks series, visit www.annapolissymphony.org.

5

Donate to or find a safe way to volunteer at a local food bank, whether through a church or a non-profit. There are many worthy organizations, but you can start with the Maryland Food Bank or the Anne Arundel Food Bank: www.mdfoodbank.org and www.aafoodbank.org. Vol. 12, No. 1 2021 31

Blooms The High-Heeled Gardener

Hope

in the Winter Garden

By Kymberly Taylor

As January slumbers on, most of our gardens are quiet—even bare—locked in winter’s somber embrace. When looking at stark branches and frozen ground, it seems almost unreal that flowers exist at all. And around this time, my heart is especially restless; I crave color, tender green, a blossom… anything alive in the garden. But I’ve learned it doesn’t have to be this way, thanks to the winterhardy pansy. The pansy is an old-fashioned, happy little flower that often has a ‘‘face” composed of bright petals splashed with colors. What’s more, it has ancient beginnings. The pansy’s ancestor is the viola, used in Greece for herbal medicinal purposes around 4 B.C.

Its relative, the wild field pansy, nicknamed ‘hearts-ease,’ inspired one of our greatest poets: William Shakespeare. In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, he writes that the flower was originally pure white until it was struck by Cupid’s arrow. The wound from the arrow formed the dark purple center of the petals. This tale of Cupid, coupled with the flower’s name, from the French “pensée,” meaning thought, has linked the pansy with ideas of lovers and dreaming. Nineteenth-century botanists were fascinated with the pansy. In his renowned Herball, published in 1857, John Gerard wrote at length about ‘hearts-ease’ and its ability to relieve inflammation and other ailments. He was not incorrect. Today, some scientists believe that the garden pansy—especially its flower—is a promising source of natural antioxidants. I dismissed pansies at first, believing them to be short-lived and a waste of time. But last year, I planted eight blue and yellow ones in my small street-side garden. I have never been happier. Other 34

ANNAPOLIS HOME

lovely winter bloomers such as camelia and Lenten rose have shyer personalities and the ephemeral blossoms of a perennial. But not the pansy: with remarkable stamina, it survives snow and temperatures down to the single digits and delivers almost constant delicious color. And it looks beautiful in a winter salad! Despite the season’s assault, they float brilliantly, small life rafts upon a frozen sea… surely a testament to love’s endurance. Why not try planting ‘hearts-ease’ this year? All you need is a shovel, a six-pack or two of pansies in your favorite colors, and a warm winter day—one of Maryland’s gifts to gardeners. These beauties will tide you over until spring when the real action begins. AH

John Gerard’s entry on pansies in his Herball or “Historie of Plants,” published in 1597.

“... and there is pansies, that’s for thoughts.” – William Shakespeare from Hamlet

In the last 50 years, much of the innovative pansy breeding has been in Germany, the United States, and Japan. New pansy colors such as shades of pink, rose, or orange and unusual bicolor designs expand the variety of pansies available to gardeners in North America. ORGANIC HIGH STYLE The design aesthetic of Beachtree’s shared spaces matches the appeal of the modern amenities they provide—from the cozy pub to the Wi-Fi lounge. Best described as organic high style, the interior design presents a tasteful blend of minimalism (think clean lines) with warm, relaxing touches. The casual-contemporary look features textured wood finishes and a palette of soft greys, rich caramels, and subtle blues. The varying textural quality and color contrasts of the fabrics keep the design current and fresh. Overall, the welcoming, relaxing design perfectly suits this Southern Maryland community, known for a quality of life characterized by unsurpassed beauty and amenities.

As the foundation of an interior, all white can be easy to design, appear fresh, and make a positive impression no matter what. But to make an allwhite home warm and inviting often requires a combination of added textures. It worked well here, as the designer paid close attention to details, both architecturally and decoratively. Playing with various sizes, shapes, and textures and working with different materials and finishes gave each room a unique look. Ultimately, plenty of added interest made this all-white interior one-of-a-kind.

GRAND PRIZE KITCHEN DESIGN

KITCHEN ENCOUNTERS Project Manager: Mark T. White, CMKBD kitchenencounters.biz

A MANOR CLASSIC This kitchen is a dream come true for anyone who loves to cook and entertain. It starts with great architectural design. A simple-looking yet complex arrangement maximizes functionality. From luxury cabinetry to skilled carpentry, beautiful finishes complete the package. The kitchen contains several standout features. There’s the custom metal hood over the prostyle range centered on the ceiling beams. The island contains a grey stain finish with an artistic yet weathered and worn effect. Two integrated dishwashers blend seamlessly with the cabinet fronts. A built-in microwave drawer is conveniently positioned on the end of the island across from the tall, integrated refrigerator. The back of the island features comfortable seating and extra cabinets below for seasonal storage. A beautiful extra thick marble top and apron front “Farm Sink” complete the centerpiece of this kitchen. And although the main kitchen has everything a seasoned chef would want, an additional prep and storage area is found just steps away from the main kitchen. The hardly-visible “back kitchen” features a “French door” oven, convection microwave, nine drawers (one of them a warming drawer), and more. From its aweinspiring features to its tasteful and intricate details, this kitchen presents a feast for the senses. T U D O R R E N O VAT I O N Dating back to 1928, this Tudor-style home by architect Lawrence Hall Fowler is nestled on four and a half semi‐forested acres in Baltimore County, Maryland. In renovating the traditional home, the owners sought to add light, make it less formal, and create a closer connection to its lush gardens. In doing so, the kitchen—originally cut off from the main living area—became a bright, central space. Raising the ceiling in the master bedroom allowed for an extra window that now floods the room with light. Other adjustments to the floor plan have opened the house to the light-filled gardens in multiple ways. A new veranda on the garden side of the house invites family dining and entertaining. Where a former carriage house once existed, a new one now connects to the main house via a glass-and-stone hyphen, whose central feature is a large fireplace. Windows and iron French doors make up two of the hyphen’s walls. The windows afford panoramic views of the gardens; the French doors open to an inviting covered porch with reclaimed timber framing and bluestone floors.

AUTO-HAUS By fully renovating a one-story garage located in a historic Washington, D.C. alley and adding an entirely new story to it, the clients gained both a living space and a showcase-worthy place to work on and display their car collection. Two façades were created for this house: The garage façade sits at the alley’s edge, and the house façade frames the living area and staircase. Light floods the two-story open living space, thanks to large skylights and a glass wall that creates a seamless indoor-outdoor connection between the garage and the living space. The kitchen opens to the living and dining areas. The basement, excavated as part of the renovation, provides storage for the house as well as the garage. The second-floor loft serves as a library and opens onto a rear outdoor deck. Special touches include heated floors and a lift-up access door that allows large car parts to be brought directly in and out of the garage. In a nod to preservation, the original steel I-beams that once supported the roof now support the second floor. Corten steel on the façade blends in with the industry alley environment. WIEDEMANN ARCHITECTS Project Manager: Greg Wiedemann wiedemannarchitects.com

MID-CENTURY MODERN Located on a peninsula of land facing the Tred Avon River, this mid-century home was in severe disrepair and destined to be demolished. In choosing to salvage the home, the client’s goal was to create a home that met the needs of a 21st-century family, was more energy-efficient, and took full advantage of its site. At the same time, they were eager to preserve its architectural character, such as its iconic roof geometry, exposed timber beams, and large expanses of glass that address views of the low-lying landscape of the Eastern Shore. The renovation restored the scale and open planning of the main living area as well as its intimate connection to the river. The kitchen was expanded, and the west end of the home converted to a private master suite, maintaining the exposed ceiling beams and clerestory windows and panels. Reconstruction of existing secondary bedroom built-ins maintained their original character. Exterior restoration included a new roof and glazing panels and reconstruction of the carport. By converting an attached storage room to a pool house, they made way for a new outdoor in-ground pool.

KENNEL BARN A brand-new barn on a 100-acre farm in St. Michaels is now home to six pampered dogs, including a “best of breed” winner at Westminster, a wooden boat, and a custom pool table. Ancillary spaces allow for the preparation of meals, a break room for staff, and a small office. Resembling an Eastern Shore horse barn, the kennel was designed with six identical “stalls,” one for each dog. Each stall has a Dutch door leading to an exterior wash area and a fenced exercise area. The entire interior was crafted from natural finished fir, with a durable polished concrete floor. A central ridge skylight in the main space of the kennel barn floods the interior with natural light. The exterior features materials traditional to Maryland’s Eastern Shore: standing seam metal roof, tongue and groove siding, and a concrete block base. A large barn door allows for easy access to the kennel area. The barn’s stepped section accommodates the boat and pool table.

Project Managers: Jay Schwarz & Scarlett Breeding | absarchitects.com B R O A D WAT E R C O T TA G E The couple who owns this classic reinterpretation of a 1940s Chesapeake cottage on the Magothy River drew inspiration for the details of its design from their memories of summers on the water – right down to an outdoor shower, oyster shell/gravel driveway, and the big front porch. Boasting a blend of shingle and craftsman style with large bracketed overhangs, the 50’ by 50’ home has seven bedrooms, six baths, and—best of all—a screened-in back porch the depth of a living room. Interior glass pocket doors slide back to merge the waterfront porch and the great room. To encourage connections with nature all year round, the landscape architect repaired the existing pool and designed a hot tub, fire pit, and water feature with serene sounds. Creative routing of roof gutters diverts storm runoff into underground containment basins, and four geothermal wells positioned underneath the driveway make the cottage energy-efficient. Simple grasses, perennials, and native plantings wrap sinuously around the home and its true “cottage garden,” adjacent to the back porch and gravel drive. Principal in Charge: Jim Rill | Project Architect: Sunhee Kim rillarchitects.com I S L A N D C O T TAG E When a Washington, D.C. couple first discovered this 1990s timber-frame house in a gated family-friendly community that bordered the Chesapeake Bay and the Magothy River, they were pleased to find that they could reach it without having to cross the Bay Bridge. But the home itself left a lot to be desired. It was dark, dated, and lacked outdoor entertaining spaces. No longer. New features promote shore life: a wraparound porch, a screened-in porch with built-in heaters, and an outdoor shower for indulging in the favorite summertime ritual of rinsing off, island style. Other additions make the outdoors more visually accessible: large windows in the kitchen, French doors in the living room, and sliding doors on each side of the dining room. Even the color scheme plays into the coastal feel of the place. A pale aqua blue coats interior beadboard ceilings and matches the wraparound porch’s ceiling and trim. New kitchen cabinets and an island also feature this calming hue. This once-dated timber-frame home now boasts a strong connection to the outdoors and a subtle but inviting coastal vibe. Project Manager: Bryan Barton | gateonebuilders.com LITTLE MAGOTHY This renovation tells the story of a classic 1930s farmhouse, reimagined. The complete overhaul modernized and expanded the original home while enhancing the visibility of its stunning views of the Little Magothy River. The undertaking was enormous. The home’s original interior was completely gutted, its mechanical systems replaced to reduce energy demands, and the aging structure stabilized. A 3,000-square foot addition provides copious, modernized space. Many of the renovations were thoughtfully planned to allow for enhanced enjoyment of the bucolic surroundings. The first-floor rooms open to an expansive deck with unobstructed views looking north to Gibson Island and the Chesapeake Bay. The bedroom suites share the waterfront view and an eastern exposure to surrounding cornfields that are still farmed yearly. The garage-turned-poolhouse was renovated to add a home office, guest rooms with full bathroom, a laundry room, a changing room for pool guests, and a three-car garage. Atop the garage sits an additional guest room and home gym. A large gathering space in the pool house features 24 ft. ceilings, a kitchen, and a stone fireplace. But with its outdated materials, poor circulation, low ceilings, and no window views, the rickety cabin built on the property circa 1973 required a full remodel to become a waterfront dream home. Even though the complete renovation expanded the footprint by only a couple hundred square feet, it utilized the space in infinitely better ways, transforming the original dark, cramped home into a sunlit, expansive, open contemporary residence with maximum exposure to the Corsica River at the back of the property. The renovation’s “wow” focal points include the living room’s custommade, nearly floor-to-ceiling windows (courtesy of a 16-foot ceiling) that facilitate observatory-like viewing and a wood and glass floating stair “tower.” Rift and quarter sawn white oak floors and a granite stone fireplace mix rugged and smooth textures to reflect the “outside-in” concept. Project Designer: Gina Fitzsimmons, ASID | fitzsimmonsdesign.com INTERSECTION: LIFESTYLE & DESIGN A family that spends their days wearing shorts and boat shoes wanted their casual, coastal lifestyle to be reflected in every room of their house, including the master bedroom and bathroom. So a renovation was in order. Originally, the master bathroom was octagonal and soared two stories high to a pointed turret. Gold leaf ribs with a metallic faux finish and a formal crystal chandelier graced the ceiling. The renovation involved dropping the center ceiling by eight feet and painting it an uplifting sky blue. Cherry cabinetry was replaced with bleached white oak cabinetry in a grey wash finish. Marble tile was swapped for tile planking and used to repeat the ceiling’s octagonal shape on the floor. A new soaking tub with a bench situated half inside and half outside the shower created the perfect way to enjoy the newly remodeled bathroom. In the master bedroom, Doric columns and diamond trellis moldings were exchanged for a vertical shiplap, squared columns, and beams around the fan in the ceiling. These new furnishings and a reconfigured fireplace completed the look and feel of a more relaxed coastal master suite. CAMPION HRUBY LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS

Project Managers: Bob Hruby & Steve Makrinos | campionhruby.com S K Y WAT E R The landscape of this summer weekend retreat—perched on a bluff overlooking a river—was designed as a wild, unruly counterpoint to the stark, angled volumes of the house’s architecture. This tension is visible, with sharp angles and clean lines of walls and lawn steps blurring into lawn, pool, and sky. The landscape architect influenced house position and rotation to take advantage of waterfront views, minimize grading, and preserve the mature trees along the waterfront that provide afternoon shade during the hot summer months. The varied angles of the cabin volumes, along with sloping site topography, allowed the landscape architects to create a series of garden spaces around the house. Lawn steps and low stucco walls are used extensively in these spaces to navigate grade and create flat, usable space. In the gardens, a simple palette of thermal bluestone steps and random irregular bluestone paving contrast with the white cedar shingles and dark gray stucco of the house. CASA LUNA The landscape design surrounding Casa Luna, a guesthouse residence on the Tred Avon River, thoughtfully illuminates and melds with the beauty of its natural surroundings. It starts with a variety of plant species that seamlessly integrate into the existing ecology. The result? Four seasons of interest, each infusing the landscape with a mix of color, texture, fragrance, and movement. Layered masses of shrubs, forbs, and grasses give the property an intimate feel while concealing a series of surprises. Footpaths wander through a meadow, capitalizing on vistas over the water and dissolving into hidden destinations. A concrete pad, long a part of the landscape, serves as the foundation for a Ben Forgey driftwood sculpture and a secluded cafÊ table. A pool, tucked into the rear of the property as an extension of one of the home’s multiple terraces, is screened by a low wall, from which a sheet of water cascades onto bathers below. The entry garden provides a modern gateway into the property. A wall of long, linear bluestone planks levels the yard, while wide slabs of bluestone provide a path to the front door. A row of fastigiated hornbeams sets a modern tone in the garden and creates privacy. A simple panel of lawn surrounded by groundcover sets a tone of order and calm. A set of stairs leads through a modern gate to the rear garden where a dynamic pool, pool house, and hillside garden deliver a setting for modern outdoor living. The pool—which includes a lap pool, hot tub, shallow plunge for children’s play, and a cold tub—extends the width of the garden and draws the eye out to the forest. A vanishing edge creates the pleasant sound of falling water. Tucked into the lower hillside, a forest garden transitions the active garden above to Rock Creek Park’s natural landscape below. After spending a decade searching for just the right property where they could design and build their ideal retirement home, the homeowners located a rare buildable waterfront lot in the City of Annapolis. In 2016, changes in zoning codes made it possible for these alley lots to be developed, and Duvall Court was born. Seven new rowhouses now occupy this site, with walkable green roofs, parking on each lot, and abundant natural light. Distressing the white oak ceiling beams and sand-blasting the white oak for the floors created a “reclaimed” and “weathered” look that insinuates aging in the wood. Developing several brick and stucco samples helped achieve the correct color palette and finish to match that of the original structure. MURRAY HILL AN URBAN COMMUNITY WITH A SMALL-TOWN FEEL BY CHRISTINE FILLAT Take a stroll south from West Street anywhere between Amos Garrett Boulevard and (loosely) Shaw Street: the north, west, and east borders of Murray Hill, respectively. The roads gently roll past the finest collection of vernacular homes in Annapolis: the Post-Victorian Romantic, the Four-Square, the Homestead, the Bungalow, the Classical Revival, the Colonial Revival, the Spanish Revival, the Dutch Colonial, and the English cottage. In the midst of all this is the oldest home in the neighborhood—Acton Hall—which, to this day, is crawling with contractors, bringing its Colonial foundations into yet another modern iteration.

Jay Schwarz (Managing Principal of Alt, Breeding, Schwarz) and his wife Camilla, acupuncturist and artist, moved away from Murray Hill to a beautiful suburban community only to return three years later. “We missed the small-town feel” of Murray Hill, he says. Schwarz loves the proximity of the neighborhood to just about everything anyone could possibly need: the restaurants and shops of West Street and downtown Annapolis, as well as the easy access to St. John’s College and the Naval Academy. “Murray Hill is probably the best residential neighborhood in the city with singlefamily homes, and walkable to downtown. I could get in trouble for saying that. I’m sure some people would argue with me. But we love it. We moved away and came back. I’ve lived in other wards in the city, and I think that Murray Hill is a great place.”

The history of Murray Hill follows the history of Annapolis and its founding, 369 years ago. At that time, Cecil Calvert, The Second Lord Baltimore, distributed land in the New World under the auspices of the No conversation about Murray Hill King of England. Lord Calvert granted would be complete without a chat Richard Acton, a carpenter from the with Bill Kardash. Kardash, a retired Isle of Wight, 100 acres of land in advertising executive, and his wife Judi, Anne Arundel’s Town, as they called a retired Montessori teacher, owned Annapolis in 1651. While Colonial Acton Hall for thirty years and tell Annapolis grew and prospered east Southgate Avenue, Annapolis, Weems family friends. wonderful stories about living there. of Duke of Gloucester Street, Acton’s Circa 1940. Acton sold his plantation to Captain Phillip Hill. Clearly, the Kardashes love living in Murray Hill. “I think Hammond in 1708. The Hammonds built a Georgian mansion on that the main attraction is that it’s kind of the quasi-suburbs in the the land in the mid to late 18th century and named it Acton Hall. middle of the city.” Kardash regularly encourages people who are thinking of moving to Annapolis to consider Murray Hill. “This In 1836, Captain James Murray, first bursar of the Naval Academy, is the part of town you want to be in,” he says. “If you want to be bought Acton Hall and the land. The land was subdivided into close to town, walk for coffee or go to a restaurant, park your car city-sized lots in 1890 and named Murray Hill. Parts of Murray and not have to use it, this is where you want to be.” Hill are in the Historic District, while much of the neighborhood was built in the ’20s. Probably the biggest drawback to living in Murray Hill is the cost of a house. Currently, the least expensive residence in the Herein lies Murray Hill’s charm. And then, of course, friendly atmosphere. there is the water. AH And then there is the water. Spa Creek is the southern border of the community. With public landings for small craft and piers for larger vessels, life on the water is a big part of living in Murray Hill. There are sailing clubs and stand-up paddleboard clubs, driveways, sport cars, and boats, big and small.

I M P O R TA N T TO YOU & WHY?

When embarking on a remodeling project or custom home, it is smart to ask yourself what is truly important. However, you should also ask yourself why something is important. This is the reason I continually ask my clients a lot of “why” questions during the design phase of their project. As we go through the design process we continually uncover elements that they didn't realize was important to them. One example is the need for more space. Yes, it is very important but why, and exactly how do you want to use the new space? Are you tired of the kids dropping their book bags on the floor after school, (pre-COVID of course), or do you hesitate to entertain friends and family because you feel your kitchen is too small and there are never enough sitting areas for everyone? Or do you want a large wood burning fireplace like the home you grew up in or that grandma and grandpa had that bring you so many wonderful memories? Whatever you feel is important to you is what matters . Just make sure you run it through your own questioning system to make sure it’s something worthy of your space and your budget. Another area to consider is the “feel” of your new space. Are you looking for a fun, open, party space for lots of entertaining and maybe even room for some dancing? Or are you wanting a warm, peaceful space

that is still large enough to entertain large groups and still be cozy enough for just two? Let’s also add in the desire to be completely connected with nature and the Chesapeake Bay like the project in this photo. This project had a lot of important items included and we made sure they all tied together smoothly and comfortably from interior to exterior. The planning and designing stage of your project is extremely important. Take your time and enjoy the process so you can really enjoy the results.

MENEMSHA A F I S H I N G V I L L AG E B Y K Y M B E R LY TAY L O R Martha’s Vineyard is known for its spectacular yachting scene and the incognito billionaires, authors, and music legends who frequent its shores. It’s a regular destination not only for recent presidents but for many Annapolis sailors and cruisers who visit during its annual New England Cruise. Whether you arrive by land or sea, you will find boutiques, cafés, and cobbled streets lined with stately manors. Bordered by boxwood hedges and white picket fences, many of these shingled whitewashed cottages and federal-style and Victorian mansions were once owned by sea captains and mariners. The island has far more to offer than specialty shops and harbors. Year-round residents live in tune with rural island life. In November, hurricanes howl in from the Gulf, great migrations of bass and whales stream by in winter, spring peepers known as pinkletinks sing in early spring, and in May, the magnificent monarch butterflies float up from Mexico by the thousands, laying eggs as they travel. In Aquinnah, you’ll find The Orange Peel Bakery, equipped with an outdoor stone oven, where you may purchase enticing breads, sweet rolls, and other delicacies by leaving your money in a blue can when no one is there to tend the store. 100

Up-island in the town of Chilmark is a very special fishing village called Menemsha. As you progress toward the ocean, you’ll see rolling farms ringed by ancient stone walls, as well as boathouses and shingle-clad cottages tilting a bit sideways or backward, as if bucking a stiff wind. Along the wharves, docks interconnect like a small village. Here, fishermen in weathered boats ply their trade all year, off-loading lobster, swordfish, cod, clams, and oysters. Often at sea for days, the fishermen rest and work in a line of colorful one-room shanties lining a far dock. Fresh fish has never been easier to purchase, nor has it ever been served more deliciously than at nearby fish shacks. Specialty dishes include chowder, lobster roll, and lobster mac and cheese. The Menemsha Fish House is one of several local fish houses to suffer or shut down due to the pandemic; however, the preservation community is stepping in to help them recover. Visiting Menemsha is a simple joy to be stored forever in your memory and accessed often—until you have a chance to visit again. AH

LOBSTER ROLLS This recipe is adapted from Larsen’s Fish Market, a tiny little seafood shack in the small fishing village of Menemsha, Martha’s Vineyard.

INGREDIENTS 5 1¼ lb. lobsters, preferably culls ¼ cup mayonnaise 2 celery stalks, finely chopped 6 hot dog buns

P R E PA R AT I O N

1. Pour water into a large pot. Cover and bring to a boil. Add lobsters, reduce heat to medium, and re-cover pot. Steam lobsters 15 minutes. Using tongs, remove lobsters from pot, and transfer to a large bowl. Pour in ice water to cover; let cool. 2. Break off lobster tails. Pull off the flippers and push the tail meat up and out of the shell from the bottom. Crack claws with the back of a knife and remove meat. Chop tail and claw meat into ½" pieces and place in a medium bowl. 3. Mix in mayonnaise and celery and season with salt and pepper. Divide lobster salad among buns. Vol. 12, No. 1 2021 101

SMART By Dylan Roche

I

t sounds like something out of a sci-fi story: a technologically advanced house where every appliance operates by itself exactly how it needs to. And all the homeowner has to do is push a button.

But these aren’t homes of the future—these are homes of the present, thanks to advances in what’s commonly known as smart technology or home automation. According to the Home Technology Association, it’s becoming more commonplace thanks to greater reliability and affordability. In fact, it will soon be unusual for a home to have no smart technology at all. In 2019, Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies found that more than half of contractors are regularly installing home automation. Mark Sanders with Annapolis-based Pyramid Builders agrees. “Prospective buyers now expect that a system like that will be in place,” he says.

THE LATEST TRENDS IN HOME AUTOMATION Most people have heard about lights and thermostats you can set on a timer or control from your phone. You lower your heat during the day when you’re away from home and then raise it to be at a comfortable temperature by the time you walk in the door. You 106

ANNAPOLIS HOME

dim the lights before bed and have them gradually fade back up before your alarm goes off in the morning. But what about smart washing machines? These can be operated remotely from a smartphone or tablet, so you can dispense the detergent and start the cycle in the middle of the afternoon to take advantage of your off-peak utility rates. When the cycle is done, you’ll get a push notification on your phone. Or what about smart fridges? You’ll get an alert on your phone if the door is left open, or you can take a look at what you have inside while you’re running errands if you think you might need to buy more of any particular food. Or how about smart showers, which can be programmed to your preferred temperature and water pressure? Or smart toilets, which have heated seats and can flush automatically? Nearly every fixture or appliance in the modern home is being made more functional and more attractive. As Joni Zimmerman of Annapolis-based Design Solutions puts it, “In the last two years, new technology and new features have skyrocketed.” Zimmerman explains that kitchens today have integrated elements on the countertop, such as cordless charging stations. “So, if you can imagine, you just have a place where you plop down your phone, and it’s charging,” she says.

Another element that can be integrated into kitchen counters: cooktops. It looks and functions like a regular counter until it’s turned on, and then all of a sudden, you can put a frying pan on it to heat up. “You can’t even tell there’s a cooktop there,” Zimmerman says. But what’s especially convenient about modern smart technology is the way it can all function together when it’s integrated into the same platform, as Kevin Price with Jessup-based Vintage Security explains.“When I want to go to bed at night,” he says, “I hit ‘Goodnight,’ and it turns my alarm system on, makes sure my doors are locked, lowers my blinds for privacy, adjusts the thermostat to the temperature I like to sleep in, and reduces the lights to 50% for another hour and 20 minutes.”

WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN INSTALLING HOME AUTOMATION As great as smart home technology can be, it’s not without its drawbacks. The Home Technology Association notes that homeowners should make sure they have a reliable Wi-Fi signal, or else they could get an inconsistent response from their devices. Reliability tends to be a big concern that Sanders hears from clients. “Most of our homeowners like the idea of automation, but they are concerned about the complexity and the reliability of the systems,” he says. He strives for “balance” so that homeowners

can prioritize which features are more important to them without overcomplicating their house. Furthermore, he points out, technology has become more user-friendly as it has evolved over the years. That’s all-important to the non-technical homeowner. Make sure the product has a good track record and that you can personally operate it without assistance. Smart technology is supposed to save precious time and bring us joy and peace of mind. Once you go to the trouble of installing a system, you want it to help improve your home. “You can’t just say, ‘Oh, this is lousy, I’m going to replace it’ unless you have money to kill,” Zimmerman emphasizes. “I like to stay with something that’s been out for a couple of years, has proven that it’s reliable, and the price has come down to be a little more affordable.” While nobody can say for sure what the future of smart technology holds, most experts agree that there’s nothing wrong with waiting a bit before investing in the newest innovation. This advice is bound to save homeowners a lot of stress, especially when considering permanent networks, fixtures, and appliances. Yet, it is exciting to follow each leap, each new advance, and watch the future unfold now, right before our eyes. The United States Capitol in Washington D.C. is a marvel of neoclassical architecture. First built starting in 1793 and redesigned and expanded under the direction of numerous architects, the building sits atop a hill overlooking the grand Mall and the Washington Monument. The original structure was constructed largely by enslaved African-Americans. The Capitol is home to the two deliberative bodies of Congress: the Senate and House of Representatives. One of three independent branches of the United States government, Congress serves as the legislative branch where laws are drafted, usually following intense debate among our elected representatives. These three branches help ensure that no one person and no president can ever rule the citizens of the United States alone, as is the case in a dictatorship. This is one reason most Americans view the Capitol building as a sacred space and a symbol of democracy. Although we recently watched in horror as vandals, hate-groups, and rioters overran the Capitol, we must remind ourselves why the building exists in the first place and why it is essential to protect this functional and majestic building.
