Welcome home 2022! We don’t know what the year will bring, but we do know we are hopeful about the future. We also know that as we venture into the new year, our homes will matter to us as much, if not more, than they ever have. The size of your home does not matter. We all look to our homes as a place of shelter and protection and a space where we can escape the stress and strain of the everyday world. In any case, that is the idealized version of home. Our society places so much value on the home that we refer to those without a permanent dwelling as “homeless”. On that point, we all have a responsibility to ensure that no one ever has to live without essential shelter. The value we place on home is evident in how we live in them and what we do to them. We decorate them, sometimes creatively and elaborately. We repair and remodel them to give them an up-to-date look. We cook and entertain in our homes, inviting others to share our private space. For that reason, the kitchen takes on a central role in our homes. Annapolis Home is dedicated to showcasing the work of professionals who devote their careers to designing homes as well as building and caring for them. Not all designs are the same in terms of aesthetic quality, so after we visit and review many homes every month, we select only the finest ones to share with you. We value and appreciate the craftsmanship required to design and build a fine home; that is what we hope to highlight for you in both the shingle style home featured on our cover and the interior design project that combines fine art with exquisite furnishings. This issue also contains three kitchens that exhibit a range of recent kitchen styles, each created by a top kitchen design professional. Laurie Anderson’s The Weather From Annapolis, take the fifty-minute drive to the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden to see Laurie Anderson’s remarkable exhibition: The Weather. In addition to being a Grammywinning musician and performance artist, Anderson is an accomplished writer and artist. Her highly provocative installations at the Hirshhorn explore the linguistic construction of sentiment and modes of storytelling, dreams, and political power. Unsettling at times, this ambitious exhibition is one of the most creative and stimulating I have seen in a long time. Annapolis Symphony Orchestra The February and March calendar for the Annapolis Symphony includes two impressive highlights. The classical Shingle Style home, which emerged in New England between 1880 and 1900, was designed for seaside resorts, with hurricanes and bad weather in mind. At times asymmetrical, its horizontal structure seems to hug the ground. Today, Hammond Wilson gives the Shingle Style a fresh interpretation—one that architect Sandie Martino loosely calls “Chesapeake Shingle Style.” As this home on Dividing Creek reveals, this style has a Chesapeake naturalism, an informal feel, with a mix of materials, generous screened porches, verandas, and wooden stairs leading to a dock with a boat or two. It may even be “a home you can talk to,” says interior designer Gina Fitzsimmons of Fitzsimmons Design Associates. As philosopher Gaston Bachelard explains, a home, once inhabited, may transcend geometrical space and is more alive than one thinks. Fitzsimmons seems to know this instinctively. “I often talk to my homes. When I go to my Vol. 13, No. 1 2022 37

grandmother’s home in Massachusetts, I say, ‘Hi, little house, I’m back.’ There’s no place I would rather be. This is a house like that; you can talk to it.” With its terraced slope and waist-high perennials, this home has a settled feel, which is no accident. At the beginning of the project around 2017, the homeowner hired Hammond Wilson, Fitzsimmons, McHale Landscape Design, and builder Gary Smith. In fact, says the homeowner, for the best outcome, hire an architect, landscape designer, interior designer, and builder before your project begins and make sure they communicate with each other. “You want them to all get along. And, if you don’t do this, you may be in trouble. You may have to mediate.” The team worked together to create a new home that, tucked into rows of cedars, oak trees, and regal magnolia, seems to have always been there. McHale Landscape designer Grace Schneider explains that one giant magnolia in particular was too close to the new garage, so it would have to be cut down or moved—an ambitious and risky endeavor. Schneider’s team accepted the challenge, digging out its oversized rootball by hand and wrapping it with burlap and twine. “They used the two skid loaders that worked as if they were dancing together to move the magnolia to its final destination,” she says. “It was watered and fertilized and checked daily and now is flowering in its new location.” Thanks to a master landscape plan executed five years before construction, the outside of this estate exudes stability. The interior captures the owners’ joie de vivre as well as unmapped recesses, the nonverbal elements that make us who we are. “I don’t know how Gina does it,” says the wife, resting her hand on the natural limestone fireplace in the living room. “She knew I loved pearls. Traditionally, I wear only pearls. The backsplash in the kitchen has an oyster pearl finish. And so does the tile in the master bath. And there is this, the fireplace. She ties things to my pearls, and this touches my heart. Things like this make this home mine.”

Fitzsimmons embedded select personal items and mementos throughout the home—things that have meaning to the couple, such as an antique clock from the husband’s family farm in Silver P.R. Run, Maryland, and hand-painted pottery from the couple’s travels to Italy. They had worked with Fitzsimmons on earlier projects, so they could express their desires freely.

So, Fitzsimmons designed the interior using old and new UP furnishings “with touches of Italian style and a mixing of materials.” Also, working closely with Martino, she handled much of the interior architectural detailing. In particular, she designed the recessed X-beam pattern in the entry, the stair railing, and various ceiling patterns, including the octagon and ENTRY PORCH lighting fixture in the round dining room and master bath.

In the living room is a custom limestone fireplace, flanked by built-ins, with European wire mesh inserts in the door panels. Fitzsimmons placed two demilune tables with mirrors on opposite sides of the window wall. The demilune, shaped like a half-moon, was wildly popular in France during the 1700s and ideal for drawing rooms and tight spaces. However, Fitzsimmons chose them for their élan and elegant form: twin mirrors summon lost light, rays that have strayed from the river into the room. “They reflect light and the view, almost like adding a couple of windows. The symmetry makes it calming.”

The homeowner dreamed of a round dining room table for many years, so when Fitzsimmons discovered a rare Sarreid Jupe table, they both were elated. “I always wanted one! For work, we had to go to so many banquets where if you sat on the end, you felt left out. Or, if you sat at the head, you became the kingpin. Here, everyone can have a conversation,” she says. The round room is centered by a low-hanging lighting fixture, with no water views to distract. “This is a good thing,” says Martino, who designed the round room to accommodate the table and an alcove for an heirloom buffet. “People can really focus on each other.”

Mirrors, the demilunes, the limestone hearth, and the striking window wall add a visual eloquence, “a glamour,” says Fitzsimmons. “But it’s the right kind. They didn’t want anything grand, just a feeling of ‘I am glad to be home.’ ”

In the floor plan, Martino points out how the dining room and wine cellar complement one another: two round forms look like gears inside a golden clock. There is innate precision to this round room—a timelessness to walls that protectively embrace its guests. This architecture facilitates the flow of life, with spaces that encourage interaction and relationships. “A guest can head downstairs and pick out a bottle of wine for dinner,” says Martino.

Like Fitzsimmons, architect Sandie Martino tuned in to the homeowners’ lifestyle. Her design pays homage to the Shingle Style yet departs from traditional expectations to deliver a more personal architecture, forms that express the heart—a round dining room, a wine cellar with a spiral stair, a library with a fireplace, and a threecar garage with heated flooring. In the “not too big” living room, the couple can sit together for long hours watching the geese fly in for the evening, as the light fades from the creek.

Upstairs, there are no indifferent spaces, a condition hard to come by once you reach a second floor and need to furnish a master and en-suite guest rooms. A story is told by Italian pottery tucked in here and there and heirloom photos. A refinished vanity belonging to the wife’s grandmother was lovingly placed in an upstairs guest room. The master suite is especially striking. The

soaking tub centers a serene alcove framed by drapery panels and overhead beams designed by Fitzsimmons. The space encourages contemplation, as does the walk-out balcony with views up and down the creek. Though they have not yet unpacked every box, this house has already become a home, perhaps because it existed for many years in their imaginations. Married for over 30 years, the couple met at work in the Washington, D.C. area. Their first date was on Christmas Eve. Now, just in time for the New Year, they can celebrate in the library with their Boston Terrier named Violet asleep in front of the fire.

Many architectural styles dot the banks of the Magothy River, including houses made almost entirely of glass. The Shingle Style works well on Dividing Creek. With pitched roofs, low-hanging eaves, and sturdy walls, the home is a true shelter. With historical roots, it is modern in its versatility. The safety it engenders encourages doors to open, barriers to dissolve, neighbors to visit. It seems as if the architecture, the home itself, has become a third person, someone Fitzsimmons would approve of: a dear friend. AH

A waterfront manor home in Annapolis built in the 1940s had reached the end of its lifespan. The existing home had too many limitations, which led the homeowners to forgo a renovation. They built instead a French Country 10,000-plus square foot home whose interior includes a double-height grand entry foyer and great room that offer a water view upon entry. A hall with columns runs along the front of the house where, again, all rooms share vast views of the water. Inside, elegant touches and custom millwork abound, including abundant crown moldings, handsome square columns, ample arches, and French Oak floors (by Natural Creations, a division of Burchette & Burchette). This new home was designed by ABS Architects and built by Pyramid Builders, with the interior by Farnady Interiors. ABS Architects selected many of the light fixtures, including the four Zurich Lantern pendant hall lights. The fine architectural design and lighting selections, along with Pyramid’s exceptional craftsmanship, add warmth to the home’s sophisticated interior flooded with natural light. This traditional handsome home has an unexpectedly open floor plan inside, offering the perfect stage for interior designer Katalin Farnady to create a one-of-a-kind interior. Combining art, sculpture, modern, and traditional elements, she worked to produce quietly riveting scenes. The rooms showcase accessories, original artwork, and furnishings, including one piece of furniture from Farnady’s début collection: the Directional Console. Using innovative local art has become part of Farnady’s signature style. She understands that art has more significance than simply putting a familiar picture on a wall. With sensitivity to form and composition, she mixes new, rare, and custom furniture pieces with various finishes, shapes, and textures. Take, for instance, a wall that is tightly curated: two identical 10-foot mirrors hover above soft gray velvet benches, “tufted” to elevate their style. They flank the sculptural console table—the first piece of the designer’s furniture collection installed in the client’s home. The custom metal table’s strong vertical forms contrast with the two repeating pieces of swirling, modern artwork that hang above. A limited-edition ink, Karen Darling’s Tangle is a modern black-and-white shaded piece, both dramatic and sophisticated. Hovering slightly above the mirrors, the artwork creates a desirable amount of tension in the space that might otherwise appear predictably symmetrical. At the far end of the great room, a magnificent custom-designed JELD-WEN window—nineteen feet to the top of the trim and softly curved to align with the ceiling vault—offers striking views of water and sky upon entering the foyer. in various arrangements so that no one cluster repeats the others. She mixed and matched furniture, taking an unorthodox approach to placement as in the two mohair couches (courtesy of Vanguard Furniture), placed back-to-back in the living room. Farnady’s design involves a high level of sophistication that extends beyond simple furniture choices. She avoids “over-decorating,” opting instead for statement pieces, many of which are customized. “I believe,” she says, “that less is more.” In the great room—long and rectangular with monochrome wall colors—furniture choices add an element of intrigue. Here, she introduced two sets of handmade iron coffee tables by Arteriors: one finished in brass, the other in bronze. Curvy and playful, the sculpture-like pieces bring an indelible flair to the room. Also eye-catching are two vintage high-back Hollywood Regency chairs in the corner, restored in an ebony finish and reupholstered in velvet fabric with silk threads, made by Zinc Textiles. 54

In the corner of the room opposite the matching chairs, Farnady installed a wall sculpture (Phillips Collection) handcrafted from a sheet of iron. Finished in an antiqued silver patina, each individual tile glistens and creates dramatic shadows for a dynamic wall display. In keeping with her focus on the creative, Farnady used whimsical wallpaper by contemporary Virginia artist Lindsay Cowles in the piano room. What is it that makes this interior exceptional, including the stately dining room with its double chandeliers and formal draperies? Working with the architects’ and builders’ exquisite work, the interior designer has gone beyond merely selecting and arranging furniture. While embracing the energy and force of contemporary art and incorporating it into a thoughtfully conceived composition of furnishings, Farnady has created an interior that is artful, distinctive, and utterly elegant. Meet CHEF MOORE

A Connecticut native, Chef Justin Moore ventured West after high school to attend the Academy of Art in San Francisco. He later changed schools and enrolled in the California Culinary Academy, an affiliate of Le Cordon Bleu, where chefs were trained using the European education model. In 2011, he co-founded Vin 909 Winecafé, which makes its home in a 1930s Sears Roebuck mail-order catalog house, and where he sources local ingredients to prepare inspired small plates and inventive pizzas from scratch and pairs dishes with fine and rare vintages.

BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUP

Take about 4 pounds raw Butternut Squash and cut in half and de-seed. In a 375 degree oven, place squash flesh side down on a roasting tray with about 2 Tbsp oil, 1 tsp salt, and 2 cups of water. Cook for 1 hour. When finished, peel skin of squash and add the squash to a large soup pot. With a whisk, mash squash with the following over medium heat: 5 cups water | 2 cups cream | ¼ cup molasses | ¼ tsp allspice 1/8 tsp clove | ½ tsp cinnamon | 3 Tbsp brown sugar ¼ tsp fresh ground nutmeg | 1 Tbsp kosher salt Simmer for about 10 minutes, then purée in blender. That’s it! Make it Maryland by adding Old Bay and Crab as necessary. Vol. 13, No. 1 2022 63

METAL & SHOU SUGI BAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBERT RADIFERA No two people are alike. The same goes for kitchens; at least, that’s what Sarah Kahn Turner of Jennifer Gilmer Kitchen & Bath believes. She wants to meet her clients’ needs in a way that’s not only functional, but also interesting to look at. In many ways, this kitchen is an extension of the home’s exterior, which is clad in Japanese Shou Sugi Ban wood with metal windows. Shou Sugi Ban is an ancient Japanese architectural technique in which wood is preserved by charring its surface with a hot flame. After the wood cools, the surface is scraped clean of soot and debris. Finally, the boards are finished with oil.

The kitchen began with the bar. “They wanted a bar, but not an open one in the living room; they still wanted it to feel fancy and have a touch of glam,” she says. Created with Shou Sugi Ban, it is one of the kitchen’s most dramatic features. Its dark color contrasts vividly with the kitchen’s almost pure white countertop. “You have the juxtaposition between the black anchored wall in the middle— which has the dining room on the other side— and then this sort of light, breezy, white, shiny perimeter,” Gilmer says. She also points out the brass on the chandelier and the cabinetry handles. “It was a warm finish against the white and the black that felt sort of fresh,” she explains, adding that the light fixture was “a fun play on what was going on with the wallpaper selection.” Across from the bar, the white countertop stretches out under broad windows, flooding the space with natural light. Open metal shelves that repeat the windows’ metal trim flank the counter. Strong colors in a small space may be overpowering, but not in this case. “What ties it all together is the use of the same materials. It doesn’t feel like we’ve created separate vignettes,” says Kahn.

INSPIRED BY NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY BY GWIN HUNT Past generations might have used the kitchen just for cooking, but that’s definitely not the case today. And when Krissy Klingenberger of Kitchen Encounters first met with her client to design a new kitchen for their home overlooking the Severn River, her client said, “I want a kitchen that doesn’t look like a kitchen.” So Klingenberger used art and nature to create a room that looks and functions like the hub of the home – a place where it’s easy to prepare a dinner party with friends or brew a cup of coffee, but also a place for work-from-home sessions or watching TV. Because the existing layout was already highly functional, Klingenberger didn’t have to change anything structurally. Bucking the ubiquitous “kitchen island,” she designed a peninsula instead, which works well in two ways: it leaves plenty of room for moving around among the stove, sink, and fridge, and it creates a nice divider between the kitchen and living room in the home’s open floor space. “Although islands are a popular request, in a more limited space, I would consider adding a peninsula, as in some cases it can create improved functionality, providing additional countertop space and cabinet storage as well as better ease while working,” she explains. The raised countertop on the eating side of the peninsula creates a clear distinction from the prep side and serves to hide any mess that might need to be hidden while hosting.

Seafoam green and natural wood are colors drawn from nature, giving the space something Klingenberger describes as a “minimalist Scandinavian River house feel.” It merges peacefully with the river view from the bay window that was originally designed as a breakfast nook but now serves as a home office. Other subtle elements include the quartzite countertop and backsplash, both of which look like flowing water. “Everything emulates nature in some way,” Klingenberger says. The cabinets, made of painted maple and accented by natural oak, have v-grooves that offer texture and dimension. Because the grooves are evenly spaced and aligned, they disguise the cabinet doors, so they almost look like wall panels at first glance. They’re natural and organic but still interesting to look at. The even spacing of the grooves was difficult to achieve, according to Klingenberger, but the effect is worth it: the grooves are minimalistic but still an architectural focal point. Even when working in the kitchen, one can interact with others in the main living space. And when visitors help out in the kitchen, they can enjoy the sights of the river or the owner’s extensive art collection. It’s a space that definitely escapes the feel of a traditional kitchen; instead, it’s a place where host and guest can feel right at home.

HISTORIC REPURPOSE PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREA WHEELER Traditional doesn’t have to feel old or outdated – and when it’s done right, a traditional style will stay fresh today, tomorrow, or even ten years from now. That was the concept Joni Zimmerman of Design Solutions kept in mind when she started work on a kitchen that was the last major project in the restoration of a historic home. “We needed this entire kitchen to feel as if it existed in this historic home the way it would have years ago,” Zimmerman says. “It needed to feel authentic to the house.” To accomplish this design goal, Zimmerman incorporated materials from the original house in innovative ways as well as “little personal elements” that make the design true to the home’s past. The kitchen’s range was built into the area that was the home’s original fireplace, and the wood countertops were made from a walnut tree that was cut down on the property. Even the light hanging over the kitchen table was something the owner saved so it could be repurposed.

But perhaps the most unusual use of the home’s original elements is the writing board on the side of the refrigerator: a slab of original slate from the property, now embedded into the wall panel. Zimmerman had to get creative with the layout of the kitchen because after carefully considering the obvious choices, none emerged as very practical. Case in point: the location of the sink. The sink’s “default place,” as Zimmerman describes it, is usually under the window. “We looked at that, but because of the room layout and where all the other functioning areas of the kitchen needed to be, it created a very uncomfortable working environment,” she says. “It wasn’t conducive to efficiency for cooking and cleanup.” So she flipped all the kitchen’s major pieces around. The new arrangement for sink, range, and fridge encourages intuitive interaction. The kitchen gets a pop of color from carefully placed blue elements, including the knobs on the drawers and the cabinet that dominates one of the kitchen’s walls. Zimmerman explains this is because blue is an accent color the owner uses throughout the home, so it fit in naturally with the kitchen. The blue cabinet is so large that little blue was needed elsewhere in the room besides accents, she says. By respecting the historic aesthetic of the home and not allowing any element of the design to get too contemporary or too trendy, Zimmerman expects the kitchen to age well, along with the rest of the historic property. That’s why integrated design always feels right, she explains. “Because it belongs in this house, it will never go out of date.”
