Welcome to the January issue of Annapolis Home, featuring the AHM biennial custom builder and design awards. We pause to pay tribute to a dear friend of Annapolis Home, Charlie Buckley, known to many of us as “Mr. Waterfront.”

Few businesspeople will ever have a brand name as memorable and exact as “Mr. Waterfront.” The inventor of the brand, a man almost everyone in Annapolis seems to know, is Charlie Buckley. Charlie passed away this past November from a rare form of nasal cancer. His presence in Annapolis and beyond—especially in the real estate market—was huge. At Annapolis Home, we are grateful to have called him our partner.

Charlie was a pioneer in the Annapolis real estate business. In tune with the advent of the Internet, he began photographing real estate listings before this practice was ubiquitous to the MLS. In another innovative move, he decided to sell only waterfront listings, seizing a market niche and trademarking the moniker “Mr. Waterfront.”

Reid Norris Buckley, his wife of 33 years, shares that beneath his magnetic persona lay a giving, civicminded man. “He loved a challenge and a rescue,” she says. During the early years of their marriage in San Francisco, she recalls that Charlie not only taught himself to sail but also taught Hank Dekker, who was blind. During this time, Charlie had a thriving business training disabled adults to work in the checkprocessing department at Federal Reserve banks.

The couple moved to Annapolis in the early 1990s. In addition to sailing and establishing the Mr. Waterfront team at Long & Foster Real Estate, Charlie became an Emergency Medical Technician and volunteered on the ambulance at Station 40 (across from the hospital). “Since many of the ambulance ‘customers’ were older, he could immediately create a rapport, gathering their vitals while learning about their lives,” she reflects.

A clue to Charlie’s actions may be found in his favorite quote by Goethe: “Whatever you dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.” Considering Charlie’s entrepreneurial wizardry, it seems he lived by Goethe’s wise words. We thank Charlie for all that he gave to Annapolis.

High-Heeled Gardener Winter Bloomer�

There was a point last month when bleakness seemed to reign. Even the seed heads of last year’s perennials looked lonely, despite hosting a finch or two. Deep in my discontent, I drove down my parents’ winding driveway to see a startling sight: four camellias blooming in my mother’s secret garden, their radiance reflected in the vanishing fog. Soon after, while sipping hot cups of tea, another friend, Cyndra Moygazel, revealed 35 hellebores almost glowing in her lush garden. Then it hit me. Winter is actually full of flowers! We are not necessarily taught this. I am happy to share that there are many flowers that burst into bloom in cold weather. With a little planning, they can sparkle like jewels in our winter gardens. Following are personal favorites suggested by plantsmen Jay Graham of Moody Graham Landscape Architecture and Bob Hruby of Campion Hruby Landscape Architects.

JAPANESE CAMELLIA

Camellia japonica

The winter-blooming Japanese Camellia, “the tree with shining leaves,” is surely the star of the winter garden. Native to China, Japan, and Korea, the camellia is a member of the tea family Theaceae.

One variety of camellia, camellia sinensis, is the plant from which most teas are made. However, in Northern America, we think of the camellia as an ornamental shrub. One noteworthy specimen is Camellia japonica  ‘Dewa-tairin,’ first recorded in Japan’s Higo Province in the 1600s. Flat, large-petalled flowers have up to 250 showy yellow stamens that spring freely from their centers. Because they bloom prolifically in cold winters, Higo camellias were beloved by the samurai, who saw them as symbols of steadfastness and bravery, according to the International Camellia Society.

Plant in part shade, sheltered from the wind. • Grow in welldrained, rich, acidic soil. • Feed with an acid-forming fertilizer in spring and mid-summer. • Grows 6 to 10 feet high and up to 10 feet across.

ORIENTAL PAPER BUSH

Edgeworthia chrysantha

If the camellia is the star of the winter garden, Edgeworthia must be the sun. Graceful ascending branches begin to bloom in December and continue through the winter.  Dozens of tiny individual florets create 2-inch clusters of beautiful yellow flowers. In spring, after the blooms pass, its bluish foliage has silvery undertones. Edgeworthia, native to Nepal, China, and the Himalayas, has an additional bonus: an intoxicating fragrance similar to the gardenia.

Edgeworthia was named in the early 19th century after an amateur Irish botanist, Michael Packenham Edgeworth, and his halfsister Maria Edgeworth, a novelist. Michael sent many seeds and plant materials to her and other botanists when stationed as an administrator in India from 1831 through the 1850s. The ‘paper bush’ was named for its primary use to make paper—and is still used in Japan to produce ornamental paper and banknotes.

Grow in partial shade and well-enriched, moist soil. • Space plants 7 feet apart. • Maintenance on this plant is minimal; prune to remove diseases and damage. • Grows to a height of 7 feet and width of 7 feet.

WITCH HAZEL

Witch hazel flowers in late winter and early spring with branches blazing in fragrant bright yellow flowers. On mild days, their spidery petals unfurl, but when the temperatures dip below freezing, they close up to prevent damage. Inspired by its beauty and perhaps under its spell, the Royal Horticultural Society granted witch hazel the prestigious Award of Garden Merit in 1993.

Native Americans introduced Hamamelis virginiana, which is both beautiful and medicinal, to early Puritan settlers in New England. The Osage used witch hazel bark to treat skin ulcers and sores; the Potawatomi steamed twigs over hot rocks in their sweat lodges to soothe sore muscles; the Iroquois brewed it in a tea to treat dysentery, colds, and coughs. Today witch hazel is harvested and steam-distilled to create a natural base for toners, cleansers, and makeup removers.

Grow in average, well-drained soil. • Prune in spring after flowering. • Prefers full sun to part shade. • Grows up to 12-15 feet tall and wide.

At each award, we present a Lifetime Achievement Award for a professional who has set themselves apart for their superior work.  The 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award winner is Mark White, founder and president of Kitchen Encounters of Annapolis. Below are remarks from Editor-in-Chief Kymberly Taylor during her award presentation to Mark:

“The fine work of Mark White came to my attention when I was an assistant editor at  Chesapeake Home many moons ago. The editor told me to keep an eye on him as he was ‘truly creative.’

“Mark reminds me of a jazz tune directed by a rhythm of his own choosing, with surprisingly effortless riffs. He channels these creative vibrations into his kitchen design, producing artistic intuitive spaces.

“Importantly, he is always very giving, willing to train the next generation, informally as a mentor and professionally as a teacher at the Anne Arundel Community College and lecturing nationwide. It is this generosity of spirit that distinguishes Mark White, who founded Kitchen Encounters 40 years ago. A leader and founding member of the Annapolis Design District, Mark’s almost entire adult life has been devoted to excellence in the field and to building community.”

What was originally a weekend fishing getaway on the Chesapeake Bay is now a contemporary full-time home designed to fulfill the needs of owners transitioning into their golden years, thanks to architect The Drawing Board Inc., custom builder Lynbrook of Annapolis, interior designer Farnady Interiors, and landscaper McHale Landscape Design. The project entailed demolishing the original first floor to open up the space and bring in modern architectural elements. Raised ceilings create space for the floor-to-ceiling black-based windows that overlook the water. Unusual design elements include waterfall countertops, abstract wallpaper, and lighting fixtures. A central feature is the fireplace with dramatic wall-to-floor ceiling stones. Outside, the home boasts white nickel-gap and metal charcoal gray siding that matches the garage doors. These neutral colors and straight lines are repeated throughout the interior.

This small addition transformed the entry of a modest village of St. Martins home into a space that now communicates openness and warmth. A focal point of the 221-square-foot interior is its stairway. The railing ribbons up to the second floor, bridging over the front doorway. The resulting open space above the foyer contributes to an airy atmosphere, allowing natural light to infuse the entry space and a discrete second-floor family play area. Despite its modest size, it is well-suited for a young family of four.

Replacing an outdated home along Church Creek entailed creating something that reflected the fond memories shared by the inheritors while meeting buffer and floodplain requirements that were not in place when the original structure was built. The replacement home encompasses 6,000 square feet across three floors and is surrounded by 1,700 square feet of outdoor living space. The spacious first floor has two owner suites and a shared living space. The floating circular staircase leads to two more stories with additional bedroom suites and gathering spaces.

A simple, rectangular volume built into the sloping woodlands, this house appears as two stories from the street but has four stories facing the Potomac River behind. The house is anchored into the earth with two concrete end walls that span all four stories. Wood-framed walls clad in Shou Sugi Ban connect the two concrete walls at the front of the house. On the woodland side, the four-story infill is mostly glass. Each of the home’s four levels holds a series of decks and balconies for outdoor living.

This remodel transformed a home that originally looked and functioned like a small art gallery into a beautiful space better suited for practical family living. Adding glass at the existing front recess allowed the core of the home to fill with light while maintaining the brick massing along the front façade. The owners’ appreciation for art continues to be evident in the way sculpture and other artistic features are incorporated into the home.

Instead of referencing traditional beach architectural elements, Ocean Sundial references another common shoreline-built element: dune fencing. LYNBROOK OF ANNAPOLIS

A team of custom builders, archeologists, and a dendrochronologist meticulously restored and rebuilt this 18th-century colonial home. They took core samples from the framing timbers of the original structure so they could preserve the historic integrity during the restoration and rebuild, thus conforming with the restoration standards laid out by the National Park Service. Certain modern systems had to be brought in, such as heating, cooling, lighting, electrical wiring, fire suppression, and plumbing. However, these elements were disguised so the house could retain its original appearance, which reflects the period when it was built.

When Wiedemann Architects undertook the renovation of the Anne Burton Jeffers House in historic downtown Annapolis, the goal was to restore the many external and internal elements that were showing their age and build an addition at the back that would fit with the original architecture better than one previously built in the 1960s. This renovation included restoring the slate roof, repairing the stucco and interior trim, and returning the wood shutters and shutter hardware to their original condition.

No longer functional and in need of an update, the client chose to close off one of the extra rooms and convert it to an office and additional storage space to alleviate crowding in the small walk-in closet. Done in a soothing palette composed of shades of gray, the remaining two rooms were converted to a comfortable sitting area with no television and the main bedroom, complete with a fireplace and television. To improve the floor plan, one set of double doors was closed off. A built-in wall unit holds drawers, artwork, and an electric fireplace, creating a romantic ambiance.

The Bexley offers refined condo living with one-, two-, and three-bedroom flats, each one spacious with expansive windows and sizable living rooms. The task was to decorate its state-of-the-art amenity spaces, such as the clubroom, concierge desk, lobby, mail room, outdoor spaces, and fitness center. Throughout the project, linear lines create a contemporary, chic vibe reminiscent of a boutique hotel. Coloration is sophisticated and simple, with whites and greys juxtaposed with beautiful jolts of color in turquoise and bright yellows.

This kitchen remodel was not only about updating but also about creating better flow, better use of the space, and more storage options. This meant removing as many wall cabinets as possible to open the space. This kitchen also had to incorporate doubles of many appliances: two main sinks with two faucets, two dishwashers, and sets of refrigerator drawers—all hidden within a 15-foot-long island. The kitchen also reflects the unique mid-century modern aesthetic that is used throughout the rest of the home.

This redesign moved the kitchen, which was originally located in an isolated area of the home, to the center of the house where it could be open to adjacent rooms, receive natural daylight, and connect to the private garden for entertaining. The range anchors the back wall and is visible from all living areas, and the refrigerator is recessed into the side wall. Decorative mirror panels reflect the daylight from the full-length windows overlooking the garden.

Making this kitchen more functional during COVID lockdowns called for better storage space, hiding smaller appliances, and replacing larger ones. The design started with a beautiful accent wall with a hammered farmhouse sink. Laser-cut mosaic tiles encourage a modern vibe. The new built-in refrigerator with freezer drawers is practical for a family that cooks, and the peninsula seating and island with waterfall countertops work well to keep guests out of the kitchen area.

In designing this kitchen, Details + Design wanted to take what was originally a poorly arranged space and turn it into something functional. The custom-built island serves as an anchor for the kitchen, designating it as a space separate from the living area adjacent to it. Different textures and colors throughout the kitchen complement and contrast with one another. However, overall, the design is cohesive and fresh. New floors add a touch of naturalness.

Remodeling this kitchen was a vast undertaking that resulted in a contemporary, coastal-inspired refresh that helped reimagine all the connected spaces of the traditional home. Contemporary frameless cabinetry with a Chantilly lace finish and contrasting natural walnut interiors provide ample storage. All appliances are fully integrated within the cabinetry, and the microwave is creatively concealed inside a custom appliance garage. The floors are of beautiful 7-inch planks of character-grade European white oak. The countertops and full-height backsplash are Neolith Calcutta, chosen for their stunning appearance and worryfree upkeep.

The task was to update a 2003 kitchen in an otherwise completely remodeled home. We replaced and modified the windows, created dramatic trusses, and added new flooring. The cabinet layout focused on cooking and entertainment. A single island was replaced with two separate islands for food preparation and dining. The flush masonry fireplace was raised to create a sitting hearth and to improve the views of the winter fires from the cooking area.

Despite small exterior spaces and limitations from the Historic Preservation Commission, the landscape masterplan of this Annapolis yard creates open spaces and multiple uses, including movie-watching and lots of natural opportunities for socializing on the open lawn. Three large boulders were sourced from the client’s home region of the Appalachian Mountains to be seats, launchpads, and aesthetically intriguing. A bed of black polished beach pebbles over the infiltration basin provides the parents with a therapeutic foot massage and the kids with endless opportunities to play. The gravel terrace becomes a place to share meals or to sit around the firepit on three hand-hewn reclaimed white oak seats.

The third garden on the client’s property, this garden needed to be distinguished from—and work cohesively with—the established woodland garden and adjacent Zen garden. Tiers of plantings and stone steps encourage visitors to interact with the garden. Perennials and plants from all over the world, collected or purchased by the owners, offer interest throughout the seasons.

The idea behind the landscape design on this beautiful riverfront property was to create a kitchen/cutting garden along with a she-shed for reading and occasional escape. A white picket fence encloses the garden and keeps out wildlife. Three gates—with an arbor over the main gate—provide access. The addition of a pair of white triangular trellises for climbing vines, along with several birdhouses, adds character and interest to the garden.

Bonaire

Unlike a Caribbean Island where sunbathers go to daydream under the blazing sun on a stretch of sandy white beach, Bonaire is a place for the physically active. In this respect, there are four reasons to visit the Dutch island of Bonaire: to windsurf, kite-surf, scubadive, or snorkel. If you do one of these four, you have landed in paradise. Of course, there are other reasons to visit. In addition to the flamingos, donkeys, salt mines, and the drive along the coast that are sure to keep you enchanted, Bonaire has some of the finest restaurants in the Caribbean. But these four activities are what draw so many people to this island.

A municipality of the Netherlands located east of Central America, Bonaire is one of the ABC islands, along with Aruba and Curaçao. Sweeping inward from the Atlantic Ocean, the trade winds make Bonaire an exceptional locale for windsurfers. The right winds are a must, but it is Lac Bay, the gorgeous and vivid blue warm water lagoon, that makes Bonaire such a haven for windsurfers. The water is only knee-deep, so if you fall often, you don’t have to exhaust yourself treading water as you climb back onto the board.

It’s the windsurfing that drew us to Bonaire. I wish I were writing as an expert, but my wife, Kymberly Taylor, is the windsurfer. I took lessons, so at least I can ascertain that you must have exceptional balance and strength to windsurf. So as not to miss the best winds, we stayed right on Lac Bay at the Sorobon Beach Resort, the only housing right on the lagoon. ‘Resort’ is a misleading description for the modest bungalows that make up this beachside village; nevertheless, the tropical landscape with chirping yellow-shouldered parrots and instant access to the most beautiful waters makes the Sorobon an unforgettable spot.

While on Lac Bay, you will want to spend a late afternoon or evening at Jibe City, where you can rent windsurfers, take lessons, or just hang out at the lively beachfront bar and restaurant.

Windsurfing is a great attraction, but even more people visit these waters to snorkel and scuba-dive. Bonaire is consistently ranked one of the best shore scuba-diving spots in the world. The waters around the island are a strictly managed park, so they are not fished out as many island waters seem to be. Not far from shore, you will see the grand coral reefs teaming with marine life: sea turtles, blue angel fish, parrotfish, yellow snapper, and more.

If you have come to scuba-dive, you can take lessons at any number of the schools on the island. However, it is far better to arrive with training already under your belt, as most of the lessons offered locally tend to be crash courses. For a beginner to scuba-dive safely, education and much practice under qualified supervision are required.

Apart from all the tremendous water sports you can enjoy, the island will also captivate those sensitive to history. Bonaire has a long, complex history as an island colonized by the Spanish and the Dutch. When the Dutch took possession in 1633, they developed Bonaire as a plantation island. Rather than strategically erase signs of the brutal slave labor that prevailed until 1683, the Dutch have acknowledged this history through the preservation of slave huts. The tiny coral stone slave houses along the coast are a must-see and serve as a poignant historical record and memorial of insufferable labor.

A typical visitor spends the day engaged in water sports or tours the island and then, in the evening, dines at one of the superb restaurants. The best restaurants offer seafood and fine European cuisine. The catch here is critical: you must make your dinner reservations way before you even arrive on the island. You don’t want to travel all the way to Bonaire only to be told by an insistent host that the restaurant is completely full—not only tonight but tomorrow night and the night after, too.

We hope our recommendations save you a little bit of time better spent diving into clear blue waters and exploring all the splendors Bonaire has to offer.

Nobel of Architecture Diébédo Francis Kéré

Diébédo Francis Kéré is a Burkinabé-German architect, recognized for creating innovative works that are often sustainable and collaborative in nature.

In 2022, he became the first African to win The Pritzker Architecture Prize, commonly referred to in the field as “the Nobel of Architecture.” Educated at the Technical University of Berlin, he has lived in Berlin since 1985.

The Serpentine Pavilion is a temporary structure located in Kensington Gardens. It takes its central shape from a tree. Curved walls are formed by triangular indigo modules; the color represents strength in his country and, more personally, is the color of a blue boubou garment he wore as a child. The funnel collects rainwater for irrigation.
