Our cover story tracks the blue water adventures of four Annapolitans who set off to sail the world in a 54' Hylas. Many people, when building a home, start by finding an architect and then interview builders and interior designers to assemble their A-team. This is not the case with a young couple nicknamed Bob and Alice. Bob, a sailor and tech executive, and Alice, titan-haired with a folder overflowing with ideas, were embarking on a new life together. They needed a home big enough to house their combined families–four daughters and a new baby. They fell in love with a home on Monterey Avenue in Annapolis with exquisite crown moldings and hand-milled trim. Unfortunately, it was no longer for sale. However, the builder–Lynbrook of Annapolis–was available. If anyone could bring to life the home that lived in their imaginations, Lynbrook could, say Alice and Bob. “We had never seen a home like that. Most people find an architect first and have a home designed to their liking; we did it backward and found the builder first.” 34

With its comfortable couches and pointed deck resembling the prow of a ship, the ultra-casual room is a natural gathering spot, complete with a built-in bar and drop-down flatscreen to watch race replays.

After many discussions, they hired Lynbrook in 2018, even before purchasing the property. Co-founder and senior vice president Bryan Beauchemin took the lead and paired them with Vincent Greene Architecture and Catherine M. Lowe, Interior Planning & Design. Lynbrook chose well. “Lynbrook paired us up with professionals that fit our personalities… I am hardly low-key,” says Alice. She needed someone she could trust. After all, in this home—their first and hopefully their last—things had to be very special. The point was to avoid the “brand new” feeling often somewhat inescapable in first homes. “I wanted to fill the house with older pieces and interesting pieces and not brand new everything,” she says. “We wanted the feel of a much older family home.” Greene designed a home that speaks to the New England shingle-style. Completed in 2022, the abode is situated at a 45-degree angle to the 36

water to respect the footprint of the pre-existing structure. With stately eaves, gables, and a lush landscape by McHale Landscape Design, it exudes an unusual mystique that carries through to the interior. Alice and Bob planned all along to bypass sprawling designer showrooms and create a home filled with conversation pieces and unusual furnishings. “Found objects help you get into that mood of exploration…. We wanted it to seem as if we traveled the world and brought all these treasures back,” says Alice, who envisioned an interior inspired by the 18th-century British-Colonial era, when travelers began to explore the world and bring back fascinating objects. Lowe encouraged Alice and Bob’s imaginations to soar. They visited antique stores in Frederick. Alice scoured boutique consignment sites such as Chairish and 1stDibs. Everything you see in this home has either been mindfully chosen or happened upon and seized

with delight. These are the things that make an interior come alive. “Everyone’s home is their own theatre… it’s their set design,” explains Lowe. “I work to bring that to life.” To walk through this home is to stroll through the living theatre of Bob and Alice’s lives. For instance, one steps down to the Wednesday Room, a sundrenched space overlooking South River, with window walls that retract to create an open-air porch. The space pays tribute to the couple’s dating phase. Soon after they met, they raced Bob’s sailboat on Wednesday nights, a long-standing Annapolis tradition. Afterward, as is the custom, they hung out with friends and crew to unwind. The living room that adjoins the Wednesday Room is a bit more formal. This serene deep space has high ceilings and gleaming mahogany floors. Crown molding and thick dark beams grace the living room ceiling, where Lynbrook embedded heat and air conditioning vents.
The fireplace in the living room, composed of Savannah brick, reflects Alice’s Southern roots. Their decision to go with dark floors met with some resistance. “Our realtor said dark floors are really out right now. I said, ‘Well, we’ll have to wait until they come back in,’” recalls Alice. They had the same issue when choosing travertine flooring, resisting the proverbial wisdom that travertine tiles would absorb heat. “We stayed with our choice. Travertine is cool to the touch; we brought that idea back from the Caribbean, where it is all over the place,” says Bob. An air of mystery drifts through these spaces, about the barrel chairs and the 18th-century piano whose ivory keys emit an other-worldly patina. Many stories will remain untold, such as those captured in the antique tobacco chest Bob inherited from his grandfather, with drawers still redolent with aging tobacco leaves. The chest is situated in his office, a dark-paneled masculine space overlooking the water so Bob can check

the wind on race days. Lowe drew the built-ins and custom cabinetry, which were built by master woodworker Donald Bayne of Bayne’s Quality Custom Furniture. In the kitchen, the same Savannah bricks that are in the living room frame the range in the kitchen. “I wanted these to be the cornerstones of the house; they continue up to the master bath on the second floor,” says Alice. The nautical scene on the backsplash is created from hand-painted Delft tiles, prized for their Dutch lineage dating back to the 1600s. To locate them, Alice bypassed a Delft tilemaker in Michigan and reached out to a shopkeeper in Amsterdam to obtain them at three-quarters of the cost. From the kitchen, one steps into a formal dining room with an antique spool chest with tiny drawers that once held silk thread and sewing notions used for dressmaking. An entire wall is dominated by wallpaper featuring elephants within an East-Asia landscape, handpainted by Paris-based de Gournay. “I saw this somewhere and just had to have it,” says Alice. “I really love elephants.”
The nursery echoes the mood of an African safari, with khaki-colored linens, bamboo furniture chest, mosquito netting, and wallpaper featuring a world map. The crib was Alice’s when she was a baby.

To progress through these spaces is exciting: a journey into a museum of lost things. Indeed, what this home has to offer is quite rare–the joy of discovery. For example, seven secret doors spring open to reveal hidden passageways, reading nooks, and crannies. Upon pressing an invisible latch in a wall panel in the foyer, a coat closet appears. Another secret door is situated behind a mirror in a bedroom, another behind a closet where a secret passageway appears. Yet another in the master bedroom opens to the nursery.
The bedroom is a quiet spa-like sanctuary, reminiscent of the fine hotels where the couple stayed during their honeymoon.
A specialty item in the master bath is the copper soaking tub situated in front of the brick wall, which continues the interior design’s subtext: an emphasis on comfort.

Beauchemin notes that hidden doors are a part of Lynbrook’s custom repertoire. “Whether you are 12 or 52, you are excited to walk through that door and see what is on the other side. Especially if it is a secret. It is a characteristic thing that makes a house a home,” he says. “You get excited for the challenge of building a secret door. You think about it all the time. You wake up in the middle of the night and think, Maybe this particular hinge will work within this particular application….” One of his priorities was to ensure the home had a “clean flow” without clumsy transitions between rooms. He explains that often, one flooring material is thicker than another. Many builders solve this problem by building a threshold to create a transition between the two uneven planes. Not Lynbrook. “We flush out our floors, so the hardwood meets the tile, so there is no need to build a threshold,” he explains. “This takes foresight, communication with civil and structural engineers, and planning.” With its seamless flowing spaces, the home is ideal for entertaining; often, the couple hosts parties on the waterfront lawn. Alice will pause on an upper balcony to survey the scene. “I come up and stand right here, looking out to make sure my guests are having a good time,” she says. From this perch, she can pinpoint the person who may need another drink, a plate of food, or an intervention of some kind. This approximately 6,500-square-foot home is Platinum Leeds Certified, meaning that every aspect—from the furnace right down to

the shade-scape by McHale Landscape—is designed to cause the least possible harm to nature, earth, and air. And there is something natural, wild, and free in these curated, thoughtful spaces. The child within is set at ease by friendly windows framing sky and water and encouraged to dream in secret reading nooks and raid the guest room, where the drawers are always stocked with candy. Guarding each dream, each memory, and the present moment, is Polly, the Labrador retriever, and perhaps the gentle elephants in the dining room. They are so very lifelike. If this home is a living theatre, it is not hard to imagine them lumbering slowly off the wall and through the house at night, listening with their great grey ears, checking the latches with their trunks. They will be back in place by morning, these gentle creatures that never forget. AH

Four Annapolis sailors splashed off in 2019, planning to sail around the world on a 54-foot Hylas named Rover. Who are these brave souls? None other than long-time friends Brian Regan, Paula Radon, M.D., Lisa Simpkins, and Rich Hoyer. Though Covid derailed their timeline and cut their journey short, they managed to sail 10,000 blue water miles over the three-year period allotted for the trip. Team Rover sailed off and on from 2019 to 2022, dodging Covid restrictions and international quarantines. Annapolis Home had the good fortune to catch up with Paula and Brian soon after their return to Annapolis in June after a six-month trek to American, Dutch, English, and French ports, ranging from Bar Harbor and Martha’s Vineyard to St. Maartens, Anguilla, and Guadeloupe. Radon stepped down from her decades-old gynecology practice just before boarding Rover. “I was worried that I had been going 1000 miles an hour and wondered if I would be bored. I wasn’t. I could hike! I could read! Go to a coffee shop! There is a cadence to cruising,” she reflects, “—a different way of looking at time and distance, and we really got into that.” Regan, a former senior banking VP and longtime Annapolis Yacht Club member, elaborates: “The concept of time and distance takes on a whole different meaning. 1500 miles is a long sail, but now that we are back, a 100-mile trip seems like nothing… it changes your sense of scale.”

The 30-ton Hylas '54 en route from Guadeloupe to the American Virgin Islands. A regular sailing day included 30 knot winds and 10' swells. “There is no substitute for size when it comes to the sea,” says co-owner Brian Regan.
These blue water wanderers were never lost—not with their substantial navigation experience. They stayed on course, braving 15+ foot seas, hurricanes, and tropical storms. However, what they remember most are the small villages where driftwood cottages line the sea, and peaceful harbors are hidden from the world. In their own words, Brian Regan and Paula Radon share highlights from their journey: THE GOOD: The best thing about traveling by boat is arriving somewhere for the first time, experiencing a totally different culture, a different topography, observing the “patina” of the town. THE BAD: The worst parts are the unexpected breakdowns of machines; we had trouble with the engine and head system plumbing. In Newport, we had to pull our boat out of the water on a Saturday, and hurricane Henri hit on Sunday. We had to do what is usually a one-week job in 24 hours. THE UGLY: Out of all the international waters we sailed, those around Cape Hatteras were consistently the toughest. It is the most hateful body of water.

THE MIRACULOUS: In the Jacques Cousteau Underwater Sanctuary in Guadeloupe, I saw hundreds of blue fish swerving in a great synchronized school, mirroring each other… Seeing the entire Milky Way galaxy from the middle of a deserted ocean… Night sailing and watching phosphorescent sea life falling away from the boat. FAVORITE PORT: Les Saintes, Guadeloupe, where a young French woman in a pink ballgown played the violin while we were at a café. AH

BY DYLAN ROCHE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEVE BUCHANAN Sometimes home design can be hampered by restrictions and restraints that loom as potential deal breakers. But when the right creative minds collaborate in the design process, those restrictions may just demand greater imagination to achieve the dream result. In the case of the Annapolis home of Dana and Scott Schuetter, certain restraints were undeniable. Despite being a brand-new house on an empty lot, county zoning permitted they could work only within a very specific footprint due to environmental concerns. However, when you step inside the Schuetters’ front door, you’d never be able to tell. “This is not a gargantuan lot,” says Craig Martin of SPIRE Architecture, who collaborated on the project with co-principal architect Kurt Shepard and Aaron Drummond of TailorCraft Builders. “You have certain restraints, a certain size, certain everything, and we still got this house on it.” The house boasts approximately 3,600 square feet of actual living space, even though it sits on a footprint of about 1,200 square feet—1,600 feet if you count the garage. But by devising ingenious ways to arrange the living space and make the most of the footage they had available, all while staying within the Schuetters’ budget, Martin and Shepard achieved a home that feels neither cramped nor overblown. The main floor living space flows from foyer to living room to dining room to kitchen in a way that tricks a person into recognizing them as distinct spaces, even with an open floor plan. Part of that comes down to invisible lines—for example, the way the kitchen island marks where the kitchen ends and the dining room begins.

A home office sits just off the entryway. There’s also subtle distinction thanks to the use of color. The living room is painted in Sand Dollar, while the kitchen and dining room are painted in Quiet Moments, both by Benjamin Moore. The front office off the foyer is Shaker Gray, and the mudroom off the kitchen is Beach Glass, also by Benjamin Moore. These variations on gray, with undertones of blue and green, look similar enough at first glance, but they distinguish each space from the others. They also create a calming effect, according to Dana Schuetter. “My goal was calm and soft,” she says. “I wanted the colors on the wall to be muted so I could play with my art. I enjoy local artists so much, and I wanted the art to speak. I wanted the wall paint to blend into the backdrop.” Adding to the home’s feeling of openness are the 6-foot windows throughout the main living space, providing plenty of natural light. This was especially important on the second floor, where each bedroom has natural light coming from two sides, giving them what Martin describes as a “corner office effect.” “A room buried with only one window would create a cavernous effect,” he says. “And physically for the eye, the brightness of the window contrasted with the darkness of the unlit, shadowed portion of the room creates a drastic difference and a stark contrast, making the room feel too dark, and the window feel too bright.” Everyone involved with the project, including the Schuetters, agrees that the success wasn’t just about creativity—it was also about collaboration. In some cases, that meant 62

Every bedroom has at least two exterior walls. the owners agreeing to stretch their budget to meet the architects’ expertise. In other situations, it meant the architects selectively deleting or moving things to fit the budget without hindering the effect of the finished product. “It’s important that client and architect have a trust level,” Shepard says. “It’s about personalities.” And in this project, those personalities created the right home with the right atmosphere and the right amenities—all in a space where other minds might not have been able to imagine it. THE CRAFT The “infinity edged” living room makes the house feel as if it is floating above Mill Creek. To create their dream home, the clients engaged Apter Remodeling to execute a whole home renovation, converting the two-story home into a craftsman-style house. Opening the floorplan, maximizing natural light, and adding custom architectural details inside and out was the goal.

BY DY LAN RO CH E P H OTO GRAP H Y BY JE NNIFE R HUG HES Blurring the boundary between the floor and the wall—that’s how architect Anne Decker of Anne Decker Architects describes the effect achieved by bleaching the original pine floor in a house where she recently led a renovation in collaboration with Daryl Landis of Potomac Valley Builders. This process of bleaching the floors meant the renovation team could preserve what was original and special about the house without keeping the dark, dated look the flooring had originally. And that’s just a small part of what this entire renovation was ultimately trying to achieve. “We renovated this to make the house more light and airy, just a little bit more distilled and clean,” Decker says. “It was more about texture and light and proportion.” This texture, light, and proportion that Decker describes—encapsulated beautifully in photography by Jennifer Hughes—is achieved by extensive use of white throughout the home. Simply White by Benjamin Moore predominates on the walls and trim in most of the rooms, while other shades—such as the Cornforth White by Farrow & Ball in the interior of the breakfast bar cabinet and Classic Gray by Benjamin Moore in the kitchen pantry—provide subtle contrast. Because the property sits right alongside Peach Blossom Creek, Decker wanted to keep the inside simple, so the eye was naturally drawn to the view from the windows. Outside, the home’s exterior has Colonial and Georgian influences with its clapboard siding, giving it what Decker describes as a “nice, relaxed feel.” The home, which Decker estimates was built in the 1920s, already had good bones, so the renovation was about keeping the original feel while updating it with modern amenities. However, some structural changes were made. Landis explains that the choice to open up two exterior walls and install 9-foot floor-to-ceiling windows provided a greater view of the river. This meant inserting steel into the walls not only to carry the weight but also to accommodate the wind force. “That would probably be the most complicated part of this renovation,” he says.

Decker notes that many of the added windows and the expanded porch entry made for a stronger connection to the water and allowed more natural light to fill the kitchen. Other changes included lowering the kitchen floor to be level with the family room and changing the layout of the walls to create a second hallway with more breathing space on the second floor. But the primary feature of the renovation is its beautiful use of white on white on white. White walls with white trim, coupled with elements like the white oak cabinetry, become a canvas for “shadow play,” as Decker calls it, where light and shadows offer depth of interest. “White on white is interesting when there’s shadow and light,” she says. She also points out how all white makes some details pop, such as doorknobs and light fixtures, which “become like jewelry.” All the art and interior furnishings came from Artful Living, an interior design studio and art exhibit based in Arlington, Virginia, providing that finishing touch of interest against the white background. Savor Easton By Dylan Roche Easton’s origins go back more than 300 years, when, in 1710, it was established as a site for the Talbot County courthouse, then a part of the British colony known as the Province of Maryland. As taverns and shops built up around the courthouse, the area became a village—and in this way, Easton has always been a destination for travelers. These days, more and more people are starting to realize how special Easton is. With so much attention fixed on the deservedly wellloved town of St. Michael’s only a few miles to the west, Easton is often overlooked. Nevertheless, it has gained a reputation for itself as a center for arts and culture. Boasting a population of only 16,000, you might be fooled into thinking of Easton as a small, rural community located on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, tucked inland from the Chesapeake Bay. And while Easton does hold close to its history and its rural heritage, the official seat of Talbot County is so much more: it’s a place where history, entertainment, cuisine, and architecture converge to create a unique culture of its own. One could argue that Easton has steadily gained its reputation as a go-to place over the 70 years since the Chesapeake Bay Bridge first opened, offering easy access to those from the Western Shore: not only Annapolitans but Baltimoreans and Washingtonians as well. But even the Easton of a decade ago is not the same as the Easton of today. Its viability as a tourist attraction has grown thanks to a booming business scene, much of which has been driven in no small part by Bluepoint Hospitality Group, an umbrella company for several restaurants and retailers throughout the greater Easton area. 88

Some visitors prefer Easton for its diningPhoto options, while others courtesy O’Learys Seafood love the many museums and entertainment venues. In fact, with more than a dozen art galleries, boutique shops, studio spaces, and organizations like the Mid-Shore Maryland Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and the Talbot Historical Society, Easton prides itself on being the cultural capital of the Eastern Shore. It’s also a place for the curious-minded to immerse themselves in history. The hometown of abolitionists Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman, Easton is also the location of a neighborhood known as The Hill. Established by freed slaves in the late 18th century just within the southern and eastern border of the downtown area, The Hill is possibly one of the oldest Black communities in the country. Easton’s notable ties to the Quaker community can be seen most evidently in its historic meeting house at 405 South Washington Street, a well-preserved example of colonial architecture still in use for worship today. Walk through Easton, and you’ll feel instantly at ease. From bookstores to flower shops, it’s nearly impossible not to be charmed by the small businesses lining the streets. Here and there, you’ll see a real estate office or a museum. Pedestrians and bicyclists meander by. You’re equally likely to pass well-dressed business professionals conducting a walking meeting as you are to see an artist painting en plein air (that is, in the open air) at an easel on the street corner. In short, there’s a reason Easton is often hailed by so many as a don’t-miss destination for anyone from across the country who loves exploring small towns.

A Day in Easton Start your visit to Easton by properly caffeinating with a coffee or tea from Weather Gage (weathergagecoffee.com), where fragrant La Colombe coffee is served alongside fine teas and freshly-made baked goods in a maritime-themed atmosphere. Later, for lunch, you can choose between the fresh, healthy options at Sunflowers & Greens (sunflowersandgreens. com) or sink your teeth into the Italian deliciousness of Roman-style pizza at Roma Alla Pala (romaeaston.com). While you are walking around, be sure to stop in at some of the locallyowned retailers, such as the independent bookshop Flying Cloud Booksellers (flyingcloudbooks.com) or Benjamin, the fine crystal, porcelain, and silver store (benjamineaston.com). If you get a sweet tooth at some point, be sure to satisfy it with a selection from Bonheur Pie & Ice Cream (bonheureaston.com).

If you’re looking for a relaxed but still upscale dinner, consider having drinks and small plates at the intimate bar/lounge, The Stewart (thestewart.com), or try an upscale European-style meal at Bas Rouge (basrouge.com). For entertainment, you can’t go wrong with the choice of live music at the historic Avalon Theatre (avalontheatre.com) or by visiting the latest display at the Academy Art Museum (academyartmuseum.com). The Eastern Shore is big duck and goose hunting country, so, if you are a hunter, stop by Albright’s Gun Shop (albrightsgunshop.com). And don’t worry—if you’re especially tired after your day of Easton adventures (or if you can’t do it all in one day and want to make a weekend out of it), you can make a reservation at the historic Tidewater Inn (tidewaterinn.com), which combines traditional décor with modern amenities for a comfortable stay while maintaining the town’s renowned charm. Destination dining is a guilty pleasure, supplying cherished stolen moments on a lazy summer day. Imagine lunch. A small town on the eastern shore. Maybe you are on your way to the beach or desire a quick getaway designed to completely transport you for just a couple of hours. Bas Rouge in Easton is the ideal target on this sweltering summer day: an unseen hand whisking us into its cool, comfortable environs. This is indeed a stolen moment and one that requires savoring. A light breeze wafts through the room. The lighting is gentle, and soft music lends itself to conversations. This is a well-thought-out interior. The dining rooms are elegant with crown molding, and picture frame wall molding giving the room a European architectural sensibility. All the details are of quality, from the big plate glass windows (for watching the street scene) to the tile floors, lots of mirrors, and fine furniture. Heavy gold-framed hunting paintings are hung on the walls. Comfortable banquettes hug the corners, and there are cute little brass stools to perch handbags upon. Crisp linens are on the tables, with polished silverware and charming light stemware. The front-of-the-house team is polite and rather stylish, the women in black Prada dresses, the men dressed in suits. There is an air of authority tempered with kindness. We order a flute of Ellner rosé champagne and a glass of Pouilly-Fumé and are offered a selection of housemade breads: Italian, a sesame semolina, two types of sourdough, and slices of baguette. The breads are all fresh and very good.

A sextet of baked oysters on the half shell arrives, not looking very baked at all. “It’s heated enough to make the butter melt,” quips our server. The oysters are treated to a smattering of ramp butter, fermented Fresno Chile oil,
and Provençal bread crumbs. The oysters are absolutely delicious, plump and slippery, with a little bit of fire, some crunch from the dusting of bread crumbs, and plenty of brine in the shell. The foie gras “cheesecake” is more like a dessert than an appetizer. It’s not cooked at all. The deft techniques used to create this dish involve pressing the foie gras into little pillows. The kitchen is having a little fun with us here, combining the savory with the sweet. The little pillows of foie gras are sprinkled with graham cracker crumbs and served with deliciously mysterious lemon ricotta and lingonberry gel. It is exquisite. For entrées, the menu reflects the time of day, with some items that wouldn’t typically be offered at dinner: things like a cheeseburger and fish and chips. The chef is from England, our server explains, and he makes a very good fish and chips. The fish is flaky, with a delicately battered crust sitting atop a lovely bed of green pea purée, accompanied by batons of crisp French fries and the best tartar sauce we have ever had. Curry oil is a surprise ingredient that takes these fish and chips to a whole new stratosphere. Chitarra is a dish that I always have to order whenever it is offered to me. Springy strands of homemade pasta are twirled with a spicy tomato and basil sauce and topped with parmigiana Reggiano curls. Toasted breadcrumbs provide crunch. This is a very satisfying pasta dish. Desserts are worthy of exploring! Almond poppy seed orange coconut cake is gluten-free and super moist. The secret to the moist cake, says our server, is oranges that are simmered whole and then puréed and mixed into the cake batter. Served with coconut sorbet, we are wowed by this cake. It is incredible, indeed. The kitchen makes homemade ice cream. The raspberry ice cream and maple walnut ice cream with roasted walnuts are absolutely perfect. The dessert menu includes a selection of hot teas. What a pleasant suggestion, to have a cup of tea with dessert. We choose Dream tea and Earl Grey tea served with lemon slices. Bas Rouge stands on its own as a world-class restaurant. There is an air of authority here. You feel you are cared for with the graciousness of the staff. As evidenced by the steady stream of diners the day we visit, the restaurant has built a following and is deservingly appreciated. AH

Sitka Wonderland When we landed at the airport in Sitka in southwest Alaska, the sight of a taxidermized salmon mounted on the wall and a huge, preserved bear in a plexiglass display case near the baggage area announced that we were in a different land. We just didn’t know how different. Sitka is a natural wonderland as far removed from densely populated urban life as you can imagine. Part of Baranof Island, it is the largest temperate rainforest in the world, so the terrain is incredibly lush. You can experience Sitka on a cruise, although your experience of the city and lifestyle will be very limited. Staying in a woodland cabin, we were fortunate to spend time in Sitka exploring the mountains, woods, and waters, kayaking around small islands and boating in open waters, observing whales, sea lions, leaping salmon, and stumbling upon fresh brown bear tracks. Sitka was part of Russia until 1867, and St. Michael’s Orthodox Cathedral remains a centerpiece of the city square. The Tlingit, the indigenous peoples, have lived in Sitka for more than 10,000 years. While there are restaurants and shops, the great thrill of Sitka is the sublime landscape. If you have a chance to go, prepare to hike and kayak, and spend a day or more fishing for salmon and watching majestic whales leap up and crash back down in these cool, clean waters. -Robert Haywood 104
