Although the Smithsonian museums remain closed at the time of this writing, the Smithsonian Gardens are presenting multiple exhibits, campus-wide. “Habitat,” on display through December 2021, includes 13 distinct exhibits in outdoor gardens at the various museums, all exploring the theme that as we protect habitats, we protect life. For example, outside of the National Museum of American History, the Dead Wood Is Life exhibit addresses the role dead wood plays in creating and sustaining habitat for creatures great and small. In this exhibit, local artist Foon Sham leads visitors through the “Arches of Life,” a series of six wood arches in the Woodland Garden.

Many people, including all of us at Annapolis Home, have been concerned about the economic health of area restaurants, which, for sound safety reasons, have had to close or limit the number of visitors. So, this year Annapolis Restaurant Week, March 20-28, has a special

significance. Visit your favorite restaurant, try a new one, or order take-out. Participating restaurants offer prix fixe menus. When the post-Covid world arrives, we hope to see established restaurants thrive and new restaurants open that significantly raise the quality of dining in Annapolis and the surrounding cities.

The Arts Council of Anne Arundel County plays a crucial role in supporting the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, Maryland Hall, the Annapolis Shakespeare Company, and the Performing Arts Center for African Culture, just to mention a few. The term “Tidewater Manor” is often tossed around, but how are authentic ones defined? Architect

Anthony “Ankie” Barnes certainly knows: he built a historically accurate manor from the ground up for Pat and Bill Girtman, who were delighted to find Barnes of BarnesVanze Architects in Georgetown. “The layout is symmetrical, inspired by the English roots of the settlers in this part of Virginia. The center portion is brick, which would have come to this area as ballast in ships from England,” Barnes explains, “and the ‘wings’ either side are clapboard and would have been added as the wealth of the owners increased.” The loggia, a common architectural element of a Tidewater home, faces the water, and French doors open out from several rooms on the main floor of the home for entertaining and dining. After living abroad for decades and purchasing a waterfront property, the Girtmans needed someone who understood their vision for “a home that was historically accurate on the outside, but up to date on the inside,” says Pam. The master bath was designed as a sybaritic retreat with a view of the water.

“When I saw the property, I knew the house should be nestled amid the trees so it looked like it had been there forever,” says Barnes. On his first visit, Ankie established where the center of the house should be and personally tied a marker in a tree so the builder would not miss it. Within a few days, Pam explains, he sent us hand-drawn plans of his vision of the house situated on the land as if it had been there for generations and the development had grown up around it. Since the Chesapeake is a working waterfront, the house is oriented toward the water to take advantage of the prevailing winds, which “tends to dissuade bugs, and offers deliberate water views from almost every room in the house,” says Barnes. When it came time to focus on the interior design, Pam called DCbased interior designer Barry Dixon who is internationally known for his understanding of period architecture and furnishings. He offered strategies for incorporating the Girtmans’ eclectic collection of art, furniture, and decorative pieces garnered from their extensive international travels. “We selected fabrics, paint, and furnishings to tie into the Tidewater style, and that would blend with what Pam already had, to create a cohesive look throughout,” Dixon says. Dixon also developed the space plans and chose paint colors from his C2 paint line. “The tidewater is a working waterfront area, so it is entirely appropriate for these colors to be part of the design,” he says. Dixon helped select materials like the pecky cypress beams in the sunroom. “Cypress grows in the water,” he adds by way of explanation. The distinctive color and texture contrast in the cypress is caused by a fungus that produces ‘pocket rot’ in the living trees. The resulting visual texture is stunning, and just what this room needed, notes Dixon. Historically and currently, kitchens are the hub of activity in a household. “This kitchen is large but not huge. The island seating adds ‘glass-of-wine’ company opportunities while keeping them out of the way of the chef who has a direct line of sight to the water at all times,” says Barnes.

Stokes using wood milled on site from 90-year-old pine trees that were faux-finished

and used in paneling in several rooms. Pecky cypress was faux-finished to blend with the trees outside the family room,” Pam says. “Although we lost wall space with all the windows, we are still able to display items that have special meaning or reflect where we have been fortunate to have lived and traveled.”

BARNES VANZE Not surprisingly, the landscape plan reflects the style of the house and pays homage to its setting. “There were black cherry trees, some beautifully distorted by the wind, all over the lot, so some we left attempting a native, wild feel on the waterfront,” says Ann Stokes of Landscape Architects. “But [the landscape] gets tighter toward the house and looser away from it,” she adds. The walled cutting garden draws on historical patterns common to the Eastern Shore. “Some of the plantings are native to this area, others are not, and the wall keeps out the deer. We tried for a simple and elegant yard that respects the tidewater landscape,” she adds. According to Pam, the process had the best possible outcome. “It all led to two professionals who worked their magic shaping a notebook of ideas into reality as a home.” AH

Every home has its own special voice that pervades long after its owners have gone. The homeowners purchased the 1940s rambler on Gibson Island last year as a second home. Though it had great bones, such as shiplap ceilings and original windows, its mahogany walls and traditional brick hearths did not “speak” to them. They turned to interior designer Erin Paige Pitts to change the home’s entire vibration—one that reflected a free-spirited lifestyle.

The client gave Pitts, based in Annapolis and Del Ray, Florida, some inspiration photos revealing many custom items. “She said she wanted a flip-flop friendly home that was comfortable and she did like color,” recalls Pitts. “Her husband wanted the home to feel kind of like the Hamptons.” That would not be too hard. The home is situated on Gibson Island, a secluded peninsula joined to the mainland by a causeway and bordered by miles of water, with the Chesapeake Bay to the east and Magothy River to the west. The island has a posh social scene, especially in the summer, with rolling golf courses, tennis courts, and forestland intersected by leaping deer and neatly paved roads. As client and designer worked together from last July through late December, they began to build trust—what Pitts needs most to do her job. “I am here to take you farther than you can go on your own but not so far that you are not comfortable,” she reflects. “It has to feel like home.” Because her client fully trusted her, “We were able to do some ‘gutsier’ things,” she says.

A commanding candelabra in crisp white and faux-painted walls lighten this once-dark dining room. One “gutsy” example is the living room’s unusual lighting fixtures—two giant rush-colored pendulums that stand out against super-white walls. She placed one on each side, dividing the very long space into two. “We wanted the two areas to feel like their own intimate spaces,” she says. Airy yet generous chairs made of driftwood and leather compose one seating group; a couch with light upholstery anchors another in front of the hearth. Pitts layered plush pillows, cushions, and accessories, which encourages relaxation. “She particularly liked the look of layering,” explains Pitts. Layering is more complex than it sounds, she notes. There are thousands of patterns; risks must be taken, a meditation encouraged. There is the danger of creating dissonance rather than harmony. However, Pitts does not overuse the same hue.

Pitts took her clients “extra far” when a complex task arose. Without flames to enchant, the fireplace’s plain brown bricks seemed to drain daylight from the room. After covering the brick entirely with a Shaker flat panel with picture-frame molding, Pitts framed the fireplace insert with marine-blue tiles, which project color. The room is no longer its former self—in an afternoon light, blues and whites seem to lift and drift through the atmosphere, recalling hues of early dawn as they merge. Adding to the lightness are exquisite window treatments in a simple off-white linen with trim by Holland and Sherry. Pitts introduced her clients to this rare French textile, available only to design professionals. Pitts continued her dramatic moves in the dining room, encouraging her clients to trust her to “go big.” A generous table is centered by a startling white candelabra whose giant organic shape and texture recall wild reef coral. Original dark walls and ceiling had left the room in perpetual twilight. Pitts’ faux finisher, The Artists Republic, brightened and shifted the ambiance with a wood lime wash. More window trims from Holland and Sherry add a level of detail to the scene.

Another example of taking clients “farther than they could go on their own” is a narrow hallway separated from the kitchen by a foyer. Crammed against the wall was an unwieldy washer and dryer. Now, its once-bland walls are drenched in the same brilliant turquoise as a large pre-existing custom cabinet, a commanding piece Pitts created for the previous owners. Storage cabinets are on one side of the hall and the laundry machines on the other,

cleverly hidden behind sliding panels. The vivid blue walls form a kind of turquoise tunnel; one is propelled along into a small “powder room” at the end of the hall, bedecked in exuberant patterns. The master wing opens onto a spacious sunroom equipped with a wet bar and windows facing the harbor. Down the hall, in the master bedroom, a queen-size canopy bed makes a statement, as it is dressed with curtains. Blues reappear but in quieter hues. The master bathroom reveals a daring design move: its Galbraith and Paul wallcovering, Seville Medallion, appears to be in constant motion. Provençal-blue shuttered windows overlook a charming courtyard, just the right size. Even though it’s early February, daffodils push up through the earth. The previous owner, a renowned professional gardener, grew prize-winning daffodils and collected many unusual specimens. It is fitting that these rare species, selected mindfully, are still here, almost ready to bloom. With their perennial strength and beauty, they match the level of spirited design in the home. “WHAT SETS THIS KITCHEN APART IS THE ATTENTION TO DETAIL...” - RYAN DES H A IES By Elizabeth Heubeck | Photography by Gwin Hunt “Kitchen of a lifetime.” That’s how Ryan Deshaies, Annapolis-area electrical contractor, describes his vision for a complete overhaul for the kitchen in his Annapolis condominium, originally built in 1981. Working daily in his clients’ kitchens, Deshaies says the urge to create a dream kitchen for his wife and himself grew. The couple’s intentions were clear. But, initially, at least, their vision wasn’t. A key challenge—how to make a pre-existing support-beam seam tie into the new kitchen design—was resolved after brainstorming with Mark White of Kitchen Encounters. They created a “dividing island” with a knee wall on the backside: a solution that delineated the living room from the kitchen, while still allowing for an open floor plan. For clarity, the team leaned on the input of many members of the Annapolis Design District. Initially struggling to choose a cabinet finish and stone selections, the couple met with Lisa Tullai of Annapolis Interiors. She suggested Monticello marble for counters and island. With a desire to have “clean and contemporary” dominate their newly-designed kitchen, the couple utilized a lot of hidden storage in the re-do, including a microwave and drawers for organizing (and hiding) dish storage. The dramatic and luxurious full-splash marble backsplash, which weighs between 350 and 400 pounds and required five men to install, contains zero receptacles. By Dylan Roche For Richard Anuszkiewicz, creative director of Monogram Appliances and lead designer of Design Galleria Kitchen & Bath Studio, cultivating a beautiful space is never about the latest fad. “I don’t live by trends,” he says. “I try to be as forward-thinking as possible.” And in the case of his kitchen designs that recently earned him the title of Best of Show at the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show in Las Vegas, that meant making people see the kitchen in a different way. “The kitchen has always been the heart of the home, the center of interest or activity,” he explains. “It’s a lot more multipurpose today than ever before, so I believe in expressing those rooms like living room spaces.” He achieves a balance of aesthetics and function by emphasizing integrated appliances. When a refrigerator has matte brass doors with leather-stitched handles, it’s not just a big box for keeping food cold—it’s part of the décor. Anuszkiewicz aims to be mindful of each appliance that features in the kitchen design. “They fully integrate into their environment, and you don’t necessarily know that’s a refrigerator or a microwave,” he says. “We always conceal items. In my mind, I wanted this to feel more like furniture.” Another aim is to create spaces where people feel comfortable enjoying themselves for extended periods of time—it’s why one of his designs features a kitchen table that backs up to a banquette built into the kitchen’s island. The idea is to encourage people to sit back, relax, put phones away, and enjoy a conversation. While Anuszkiewicz doesn’t necessarily see anything wrong with the classic white kitchen, he sees more and more homeowners interested in using rich materials and bold colors in their kitchen. “We are seeing a resurgence of wood and colors and a lot of things other than just white,” he says. “SPA RKS A RE FLYING! ” - G INA FITZSIMM ON S By Elizabeth Heubeck | Photography by Steve Buchanan “Sparks are flying.” That’s how Annapolis-based designer Gina Fitzsimmons describes the chemistry that takes place when she and her long-term client brainstorm—most recently when designing the renovated kitchen in her nearly 100-year-old Eastport farmhouse, Birch Breeze. Starting with a clean white base, the renovation added multiple modern touches of flare while maintaining the warm and cozy feel of this rustic, historical gem. There are the rich walnut accents under the peninsula and on the countertop and the doors of the glass cabinet. Also eye-catching are the mid-century modern pendant lights over the peninsula. Spun out of bronze and brass, the curved cylindrical lights are etched in circular rings, with a deep bronze patina. Some pre-existing features were left alone or brought to the forefront. For instance, floor joists in the kitchen were exposed. The old chimney, exuding what Fitzimmons calls its “crusty texture,” stayed. In some cases, an intentional juxtaposition of historical and modern creates a desired effect. To an extent, Fitzsimmons drew creative inspiration from pre-existing remnants among the owner’s accessories. The color scheme, for instance, came from a modernist oil painting over the sectional in the living room (Jon Engilberts, an abstract expressionist from Iceland, 1908-1972). Primary colors were pulled from the painting’s pots and bottles. The overall effect of the thoughtfully renovated historical kitchen is, at once, one of awe and comfortable familiarity, befitting this extra-special historical home. AH

“THE RE ’S A TRE ND FOR NOT KE E PING A WHOLE LOT OF THINGS ON THE C OU N TERTOP.” - TINA C OLE BROOK By Dylan Roche | Photography by KRR Photography When Edgewater residents Pat and Kerrie Flaherty sought to expand and renovate their kitchen, they hoped to take the small, dark, outdated space, and create one that was beautiful, practical, and contemporary. But as far as a serious vision was concerned? “We had a basic idea of what we wanted, and we can look at something and say, ‘That’s really pretty,’ but we don’t know how to get there,” Pat Flaherty says. That’s when they found Tina Colebrook of Architectural Kitchens of Annapolis, who would help them take everything they wanted and find a way to make it a reality. That meant some big changes. “The biggest decision they made was to give up the formal dining room for a more casual eat-in kitchen,” Colebrook says. “That really enabled them to take advantage of their water views.” Another change involved creating a lounge for their three dogs. In fact, one of the more distinct aspects of the new kitchen design is the Labrador Lounge, a special place where the Flahertys can let their three dogs hang out. Installing a gate that’s easily tucked away means the labs can still watch everything that goes on in the kitchen without being in the way. Greg Younger of Younger Construction came in to execute Colebrook’s architectural design. “We had to look at the existing space very carefully,” he says. “We studied the drawing and the design plan fairly meticulously so we could understand all the small little things they were trying to achieve with the project.” That meant gutting the old kitchen, putting an addition on the back of the house where a porch used to be, cutting into a portion of the old dining room, and enclosing the old breezeway that leads out to the garage. The result is a kitchen that offers an appropriately Annapolitan nautical feel with its use of blue and white, accented by walnut wood. A built-in armoire holds appliances that might otherwise clutter the countertop—such as the toaster or blender—thus ridding the room of clutter. “There’s a trend for not keeping a whole lot of things on the countertop,” Colebrook explains. Pat and Kerry Flaherty agree they couldn’t be happier with seeing their ideas spring to life. “It was great to be able to work with somebody who thought like me,” Pat Flaherty explains, “but who had the vision to make it work from a decorative side as well as the functional side.” Their three dogs are happy as well. Zimmerman likes to blend classic design elements with twists of intrigue—an approach that works well in this predominantly white and gray kitchen. Even seemingly minor choices make a big difference, like the niches to the left and right of the refrigerator. “I love to accent glass-framed doors in a contrasting color like we did in this kitchen—and I love, love, love the tile with gold stripe in the niche,” Zimmerman says. Whereas homeowners often consider function over form, Zimmerman’s choices tend to incorporate both. The kitchen’s ceiling light, for instance, does more than brighten the space. It adds visual interest, its curviness softening edges of the cabinet details. “It totally transforms the space,” she observes. That’s a good thing, as the predetermined layout of the room—due to the fixed location of the sink and cooktop and concrete floors—made it impossible to alter electrical outlets in the island or shift appliances. Nevertheless, there was room for some significant changes. Zimmerman persuaded her client, originally reticent about installing a galley workstation, to make the investment in the deluxe sink. It’s a choice she doesn’t regret. While a utilitarian fixture like a big sturdy sink probably won’t ever go out of style in a kitchen, certain design trends are far more fleeting. What of the white kitchen? “The white kitchen will always be around because it is light, classic, and coastal,” Zimmerman acknowledged. “That being said, many people are venturing away from it and looking to bring more colors and textures into a space that can be cold with too much white. Mixing materials and textures is very strong today.” AH

The High-Heeled Gardener I grew up roaming Maryland’s woods and rivers, attending baseball games, and cheering on our Baltimore Orioles baseball team. But I had never seen the actual bird. I reasoned that the oriole was very rare, or visible only to mysterious professionals who worked at nature centers. What a joy to find out that I was wrong! I learned that these flame-orange and black neotropicals are not rare, but shy, preferring the highest tree branches. They fly into Maryland from March through May, migrating from Mexico and the tropics. They will stay the summer before returning to warmer shores around September. The Baltimore Oriole may be especially historic. According to the Maryland State Archives, in 1698, “Baltemore Birds” with their brilliant plumage, “were among the “Beasts of Curiosity” sent from England to Maryland’s nobility. In the 1700s, colonists in Virginia and Maryland called this species “the Baltimore-Bird.” Males wore orange and black, the heraldic colors of Lord Baltimore, patron of the Maryland colony. Building on this history, Maryland adopted the Baltimore Oriole as its state bird in 1947. These famous flyers can be attracted into your backyard without fuss—but not with birdseed, which they do not eat. They have a sweet tooth, and, depleted from migration, need the energy sugar provides. Here’s my method: buy a bag of large bright oranges, cut 10 in half, and nail them to trees in your back yard or set them on feeder platforms. Try groupings of two and three. Give it a day or two and watch discretely. Let me warn you—with 20 or so oranges in your backyard, your neighbors may look at you strangely. But here is the goal: to create a sea of orange visible from the sky. I did this once with my father and about twelve swooped in, perching right on the oranges sometimes, dipping in their beaks for five to ten seconds at a time. This visitation was one of the most beautiful moments of my life, especially since it happened with my dad. While you are at it, keep an eye out for their nests—one of the wonders of the avian world. At dusk they fly out, dip into inverted arcs to catch what flutters or stings, what can only be hunted at night. Sunlight stops their flight, drives them into their hot chamber to rest and nest, troll-faces pinched shut. I hear them scratch. In darkness they chop and hazard through the sky, around blue outlines of pines, pitch up over the old Dutch house we share. They scare some but not me. I see them for what they seem— timid, wee, happy or lucky, pinned to the roof beams, stitched up in their ammonia reek and private as dreams.
