“Why not make traveling the staircase an event? After all, you go up and down all day. It has to be glorious.” Central to this recently gutted condominium is a highly detailed stair. Winner of a 2020 AIA DC/Washington Residential Award, it replaced the original tight winding stair and connects all levels, both functionally and architecturally.

– Mark McInturff

With its sheets of glass and minimalist aesthetic, this Georgetown home’s white four-story interior has an abstract quality. It seems to vanish into the air itself, erasing even the inhabitant for a moment or two. Architect Mark McInturff says the white drenching its 4,100 square feet was meant to make the interior feel “luminous and sparkly,” especially with its south-facing exposure. He would know. Over the past 20 years, McInturff has worked on this home situated on a bluff overlooking the Potomac River three separate times for three different owners. He jokes that instead of the usual washing machine that passes automatically to the new homeowners, “the architect conveys with the house.” But his in-depth knowledge of the structure, built in the 1940s, has helped him in each revision. He started work on it in 2003 when its 1970s facade was crumbling and “slipping down the hill,” he recalls. “We corseted it back to the house and renovated the rear 15 feet.” In the townhome’s second renovation years later, he removed an entire floor and designed a new fourstory steel and glass wall that opened the interior to views of the Potomac River and the Francis Scott Key Bridge from almost every room. The client also received a new kitchen, minor interior renovations, and, as a crowning touch, a roof deck to survey a breathtaking panorama. In the third remodel, the current owners redid everything not completed during the first two. The interior was gutted and reconfigured as they dispensed with steel and maple millwork, replaced every surface, and painted the walls, trim, and most ceilings white. What’s more, its primary deficit could, at last, be addressed: the stair. “I felt we were addressing the real weakness in the house,” says McInturff. “The old one was small and windy.” He enlarged the stairwell and worked closely with fabricator AK Metals and Potomac Woodwork to fashion a new, more substantial stair connecting all the levels

architecturally. A strong kinetic gesture, it simultaneously grounds and uplifts. Importantly and in keeping with modernism’s emphasis on machine-like precision, “It is put together like a Swiss watch,” he says. He notes that the home’s structure is unapologetically vertical, with the stairs central to all movement. “Why not make traveling the staircase an event? After all, you go up and down all day. It has to be glorious.” What is unusual in this home is that the kitchen is one story down. In each remodel, this could have been addressed and modified. However, the homeowners and McInturff are just fine with the arrangement. “It is pretty rare that the kitchen and living room are not on the same level,” he says. “It is an event to go to dinner and then afterwards go up and have cigars and brandy. It is like a country house inside of a modern one.” What’s more, says McInturff, “Instead of a large collection of small rooms, the condo is a small collection of large rooms.” Against the all-white field of this townhome’s interior, details come into focus. “There are delicate railings and shelves; it is kind of like a jewelry box,” he notes. And, upon entering this home, there is the rare feeling of discovery one has when opening a locked box for the first time, peering at treasures upon neat miniature shelves. Amidst the grand Victorian-era mansions and historic brick and frame row houses that line the cobblestone streets of historic Georgetown, this home stands out with its soaring windows and vatic stair—a sharp contrast that mesmerizes all who pass by. Though the many windows make this space feel transparent, the white seems to counter the weightlessness. The walls surround and enclose; the stair promises transport. Rather than drift in a sea of white, one is becalmed. AH

Windmill Point A LITTLE CHOPTANK SANCTUARY

BY DYLAN ROCHE PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY CHRISTINE M. DAYTON, ARCHITECT

Vol. 13, No. 2 2022 37

Standing tall on pilings along the Little Choptank in Dorchester County, in a location where gentle breezes bring cool relief in the summer and where waterfowl roost beside the docks in winter, the home known as Windmill Point achieves the ambitious purpose of being a beach house fit for recreation but with all the comforts fit for contemporary living. As architect Christine Dayton says, “We wanted to make it look like a beach house, but one that would satisfy this family’s needs and accommodate how they enjoyed this house.” This involved several formidable challenges. For one thing, Windmill Point is a rebuild of an original structure that was previously a single-story cottage built within 100 feet of a major flood plain along the shoreline. This meant Dayton had to maintain the same footprint, and any added square footage had to go upwards instead of outwards.

The interior design is driven by views which become the home’s artwork. 38

ANNAPOLIS HOME

Columns, custom millwork, and high ceilings ground this beach house in tradition. The finished product is about 2,500 square feet of living space towering above the 1,500 square feet where the original cottage stood. Nature presented its challenges here, specifically in the form of wind and potential flooding. “Wind was certainly a factor, particularly for a house that has a small footprint yet is nearly 50 feet tall,” says Bob Gearhart of Focus Construction. “The property also has a LiMWA, which is a ‘zone of wave’ action, so the building area was frequently subjected to flooding around the house and on the approach road, making the property inaccessible on some days.” For a tall house with a narrow footprint, Dayton had to be smart about the layout of rooms. The first floor encompasses the living room, dining room, and kitchen. Upstairs, the bedrooms and a game room await on the second floor. The top floor is what’s known as the “river room,” a recreational gathering space overlooking the water. Each floor has access to a porch. “To maximize the views was a big part of the design process,” Dayton says. “The porches drove a lot of how the outdoors come in on each level.” The home’s view also served as the starting point for the interior design, almost as if the scenes through the window were artwork in each room, according to Laura Hodges of Laura Hodges Studio. “It was a case of keeping it natural, keeping it calm, and letting the views speak for themselves,” Hodges says, elaborating that she used natural colors and ensured none of the views were obstructed by the way furniture was organized. To further create a sense of spaciousness, the house has high ceilings—about ten feet on the first floor and about nine feet on the second floor—as well as low windows that make a person feel as if they’re outside even when they’re indoors. Plenty of natural light is available in practically every room all day long. Vol. 13, No. 2 2022 39

But even with its airy spaciousness and added square footage, Windmill Point continues to have a special feeling of simple, relaxed, vacation-style living. “That’s all in the detailing,” Dayton says. Details like molding and wainscoting, along with columns and tall baseboards, give the home a more traditional aesthetic, characteristic of what could be found in an old-fashioned cottage. “These elements helped with the scale and proportions of the spaces and added to the cottage feel,” Dayton says. “The house would feel very contemporary if these details were minimalized or absent.” In this house, enjoying the charm of a beachside cottage doesn’t mean having to give up space or comfort—it’s an escape from the hustle and bustle of the world in the grandest kind of way. AMERICAN SUMMER The Great American Summer is a dream pursued by many and our clients, for this lakeside abode, wanted the perfect home to allow them to do just that with their large family. This new house embraces the Shingle House tradition with soft lines, multiple windows, sculptural forms, and whimsical detailing. The lakeside opens up to a series of porches: a central curved destination that is everyone’s favorite place to watch the goings-on at the beach and on the lake. Flanking long porches lead alternatively to a spiral stair to a roof-top observation deck and deeper open and screened porches with fireplaces.

BIGGER

CAN BE BETTER One of the easiest ways to breathe new life into tired rooms is updating your Decorative Lighting. Lighting is versatile. It can command attention, or disappear into the room, allowing the architectural elements of the space to take center stage. This season, we see homeowners gravitating toward BIGGER fixtures. These lighting elements inject a “WOW” factor into entry foyers, kitchens, living rooms and outdoor spaces. Whether large in diameter, or clustered in multiples—Bigger is Better this season. Take into consideration overall function of the space, and its architectural elements: such as window height, ceiling height, and furniture groupings. Add drama but remember—a balanced room that embraces shadow and light is always in style.

BEFORE

The cover of the Foo Fighters’ album “Nothing Left to Lose” was shot on the porch of the original home, pictured top right.

A young Dave Grohl poses for “Nothing Left to Lose.”

Just as the seasons have rhythms, so do our homes. In an earlier incarnation, this residence was a tiny split-level, but its beat was rock-n-roll. Rock legend Dave Grohl purchased the property in the late 1990s, building a makeshift recording studio in the basement that would rocket his then-new band, Foo Fighters, to Grammy Award-winning fame. Before long, band members Taylor Hawkins and Nate Mendel moved in, and the trio turned the basement into Studio 606, soundproofing the walls with sleeping bags. It was here that they recorded “Nothing Left to Lose,” which won a Grammy for Best Rock Album. In fact, the album cover was shot on the front deck. Eleven more Grammys would follow. In an interview with author Glen Himes, Grohl said, “It was one of the most relaxing times of my whole life. All we did was eat chili, drink beer and whiskey, and record whenever we felt like it. When I listen to that record, it totally brings me back to that basement. I remember how it smelled and how it was in the spring: the windows were open, and we’d do vocals until you could hear the birds through the microphone. And more than any other record I’ve ever done, that album does that to me.

A mahogany wooden band near the ceiling rings the living room and kitchen, creating a visual rhythm.

“When we won for best rock album, which we made in that basement, I was so proud—because we made it in my basement in a crappy makeshift studio that we put together ourselves. I stood there looking out at everybody in tuxedos and diamonds and fur coats, and I thought we were probably the only band that won a Grammy for an album made for free in a basement that year.” Though Grohl has moved back to Los Angeles, music remains in the air. New rhythms meet the old in a radical remodel by architect Donald Lococo, who expanded the home by onethird and added walls of glass along the home’s exterior. Lococo, a trained classical pianist, notes that every musical piece has an underlying structure—rhythm, departure, return, modulation. And this is one way to understand this multi-level home. “The way the walls pull away from the home is one rhythm,” says Lococo. He points out the strong vertical rhythms created by yellow mullions on the exterior windows and notes that these are modulated in the foyer. Connecting the living room and kitchen is a narrow mahogany band “that loops them together,” explains Lococo. “Also, there is the rhythm of the circular deck rail wrapping

the house.” A visual music is found in the percussion of pitched rooflines and outside walkways, and short bridges lead here and there like riffs. There is another way to understand its design. Lococo compares the home to a walnut with a hard shell that, when cracked in half, reveals individual pieces: “a furnished, beautiful core. There is the idea that the walls are the shell, that parts of the home are pulling away from itself,” he explains. A husked walnut is an unusual image but a relevant analogy. With its exterior siding stained a deep chocolate brown— an homage to its original color—the natural world seems to embrace this home. Pine thickets and towering oaks shelter squirrels and birds. One can sense their terrestrial rhythms from the new living spaces, redesigned to take advantage of the forest’s ever-changing beauty, says interior designer Kelly Schuler of Madigan Schuler, who collaborated with Lococo and the homeowners early in the project. Commenting that the interior was “as dark as despair,” she added that Grohl was happy in the woods recording with his band. “They said that they were like squirrels running in and out of the house.” There seemed to be a free-flowing wildness, a coexistence

In the foyer, strong vertical rhythms echo those on the exterior. between the artists and nature. “Woodpeckers regularly drilled into the house. When we got here, there were lots of patches,” she recalls. Today, ambient light floats in through window walls as if a gift from the forest. The interior is alive with organic forms, natural materials, and art. Surrounded by a lush native landscape by Campion Hruby Landscape Architects, the interior appointments are uncomplicated. With soft grass wallpaper, recycled wool rugs, cowhide, and sectional, nothing startles or overwhelms. The liveedge coffee table is scaled low to better foreground exterior views. “The homeowner did not want modern or cold on the inside. A mom with kids and dogs, she wanted a warm, comfortable home with a mudroom and a kitchen to walk down to,” says Schuler. In contrast to the home’s sharp planes and angles, she did not want anything inside that had a hard edge. Schuler points out a “bird’s nest” chandelier in the breakfast nook that came from Australia and giant fossil sculptures in the living room and outdoor decks. “We wanted the walls to kind of go away and let the view take over,” she says. The interior is soft and comfortable, but Lococo made sure to preserve Studio 606 in spirit. The home has an alertness as if a fire has just been lit inside; a bold project could be underway. The home cannot be seen in its entirety from any one vantage point. However, Lococo notes invisible connections in the floor plan. The mudroom behind the foyer conveniently steps down into the kitchen, which, in an unusual move, is hidden from the front door. “It is not modern and open-spaced, but something more,” he reflects. “I call it cozy modern. The open spaces are balanced by private ones.”

The dining room overlooks the woods and fossil scultpure; the wrap-around deck is “another circular rhythm,” says architect Donald Lococo. Lococo reflects on the original structure, so plain that it seemed to recede into the woods. “It had a Brutalist kind of look,” he says. The architecture of the Brutalist era grew out of the modernism of the 1950s and 1960s. It was purposely uniform, without individuality. “The idea was that each building was for the good of the masses, that everyone is in a rhythm…. There is not one spirit, one heart.” His clients gave him the following challenge: “They wanted me to put a face on the faceless and add scale and perspective. The redesign blew it open.” Maybe that is what captures our interest: not just this home’s mesmerizing face but its hidden depths. “There is the warmth underneath the faceless Brutalist piece, a level of soul on the inside,” he notes. This dialectic is perhaps what Lococo was trying to mirror through structure and form, experimenting with solid walls that are both shelter and barrier. In building and removing them, there is a crucial “breaking through” and a revelation of its inaudible rhythms. AH

Mediterranean ON THE MAGOTHY

Because of the topography, only two stories of this three-story home are visible.

Vol. 13, No. 2 2022 59

From

the outside, it looks like an estate that could be found somewhere in Italy or the Mediterranean—not tucked away in a suburban community in Arnold along the Magothy River. On the inside, it’s a home that’s as welcoming and practical as any American family could want. This was the vision Mary Kay Falise had when she approached Cathy Purple Cherry of Purple Cherry Architects about bringing her dream home to life—something Purple Cherry accomplished in collaboration with builder David Glazier of Wood Visions. “I’ve always been drawn to the Italian-Mediterraneanlooking exterior of a home—it has a formal appeal to it, and I’m a classic and tailored kind of person,” Falise says. Part of her love for the Italian style comes from her proud Italian heritage. It’s also influenced by her many world travels, which have exposed her to different types of architecture.

Inventive swiveling saddle-topped barstools await the thirsty rider at this custom bar.

Stucco walls and slate tiles on the roof lend European flair. The tall windows and decorative features add to the grandness. Glazier says the choice to use smooth stucco was instrumental. “It almost has the look of pre-cast stone. It gives the house the character she wanted.” Through the front doors, the home opens up into a spacious open living space. “I just wanted to ensure the inside of the home, with my children and the way I like to entertain, feels comfortable,” Falise says. Among the ways the home is specifically tailored for Falise’s needs is a downstairs mudroom, a useful space for a family of dedicated equestrians. “It was designed for aesthetics and functionality—beautiful but laid out perfectly with an island to clean tack and prepare for competition,” she explains. “It is one of amy favorite places in my home.” The equestrian theme extends into the basement bar, whose matching cabinetry and doors were made of reclaimed wood sourced from historic barns and handpicked by Falise at Vintage Lumber in Westboro, Maryland. When approached from the front, the home’s threestory structure presents as a two-story because of the

When working with an architect, sweeping views from the kitchen can be perfectly planned.

property’s topography, Purple Cherry explains. Around back, the bottom floor opens up to a pool deck overlooking the water. Unlike the front façade of the house—which is done in a style officially known as Italianate, per Purple Cherry’s project manager Alan Cook—the back of the house has a more contemporary look, one reminiscent of a modern villa. Although a project such as this might sound like something that would stick out in a suburban neighborhood, Purple Cherry explains that’s not the case. Instead, in a community where half-century-old cottages are regularly torn down and replaced by complete rebuilds, there is rarely much uniformity among the homes; they already reflect a range of styles, scales, and price points. Additionally, Cook explains the home is “self-contained because of the landscape,” with lines of trees running along each side of the property to create a private world separated from the rest of suburban reality. No, it’s not a typical American cottage—but it’s exactly the house Falise wanted: one that brings all the architecture she’s loved a half-world away, right here to the community where she’s raising her family. DESIGNING L A N D S CA P E

BY RO B E RT E . H AY WO O D P H OTO G RA P H Y C O U RT E SY Mc H A L E L A N D S CA P E D E S I G N

McHale Landscape Design is celebrating 40 years in business. The company began with two brothers, Steve and Kevin McHale, and now has almost 300 employees who serve homeowners throughout Northern Virginia and Maryland, including the Eastern Shore. McHale is known for the beautiful landscapes they design and plant, as well as the walkways, waterfalls, pool houses, and porches they build. Given their influence on the landscape aesthetic of our region, we decided to make McHale the focus of this month’s High-Heeled Gardener column. In the interview that follows, Steve McHale shares the story of how the brothers got started, how the business has grown over the years, and offers tips about the best plants for the mid-Atlantic region. This interview has been edited for conciseness.

Vol. 13, No. 2 2022 95

The plantings around this stone manor enhance its architectural style; in its equally riveting rear yard [pictured right] A classical pergola is adorned with climbing blooms.

Robert Haywood: Congratulations on 40 years. You started at an early age. Steve McHale: Yes, we did. Our first attempt at entrepreneurship was when we were ten and twelve. Our dad wouldn’t let us have a minibike but did allow us to have a riding lawnmower. So, we started mowing the neighbors’ lawns for $3.50 per lawn. We also made a deal with our buddies. If we cut trails for them in the meadows surrounding our neighborhood, they would let us ride their minibikes. So, we learned to barter early in our career. My brother Kevin and I started our current company right out of college. Kevin started a couple of years before I graduated with my degree in landscape architecture. We both went to WVU. After he graduated, he would find a planting job, take pictures of the site, mail Kodak or Polaroid photos to me at WVU and say, “Here’s what I’m thinking....” I’d make a little sketch and then send it back to him. He’d present it to the client, and then, on weekends, maybe I’d come home, or he’d get some guys from our neighborhood and do the job. Haywood: Because you started out small and you’ve grown and grown, I’m sure there have been many ups and downs along the way. Some businesses try to grow, and they fail. What’s allowed you to grow over all these years? McHale: We definitely have had our share of luck and good timing and some breaks along the way that allowed us to grow. Most of that growth came from opportunities from the relationships that 96

we have built through the years and continue to build. We’ve always remembered not to become complacent. We never think that we have it made, and we still don’t. [Our growth] is without a doubt due to the people that work with us every day. Note that I didn’t say work for us. Just looking at our field guys, we have some foremen that have been with us for over 25 years. They have learned to live the American dream and have had the opportunity to do so. Haywood: I’m wondering what is the dynamic between you and your brother that keeps you together and working productively? McHale: For one thing, we both have very different roles now. My brother focuses more on the business and operations side, and I focus on the design and construction and implement the sales side. We have trust with each other. There was a day when we could have an argument, and then five minutes later, we could go have lunch together. I think that’s something that is pretty special about being brothers. We can get over things quickly because, in the end, we do trust each other and love each other. That’s what holds it together, I think. Haywood: When you go visit a residential landscape, your own or others’, what are some of the qualities that make something exceptional to you? McHale: Well, from the design standpoint, I think simplicity is the key. It’s very easy to over-design and end up with a busy plan,

especially in residential. When we go to a property, we don’t look at just the landscape; we look at the landscape, the house, and the surroundings together. It’s all dependent on the architecture, which is what we want to complement, while also meeting the needs of the client, with the elements that they want to include. Haywood: There’s a lot of different landscape companies and landscape styles and philosophies. Is there something that you could point to as a McHale Landscape aesthetic that runs through your work? Or, if not, is it just each designer doing his own thing? McHale: I would say that our signature style of masonry has always distinguished us from others. I will tell you, early on, when Kevin and I started including masonry into projects, we were not qualified. So, we hired some old-world masons, and we were the labor for them. We would watch them build stone walls and whatever masonry it might have been. So, we learned from them how to lay stone in that old-world style, which you don’t see very

often anymore; instead, you have a lot of thin veneer stuff. So, after we learned how to do it ourselves, then we hired masons, and they understood that we knew how to do it, so the standards were very high. Moreover, I think it’s really our design/build approach that sets high standards for every detail of the project, from the threshold of the door out to the entire property. It makes a difference for people to know that they only have to talk to one person and that one person really does know what’s going on with the entire project. Haywood: What are some of your favorite plants and trees to grow in Maryland? McHale: This is not really a joke, but the real answer that Kevin and I both agree on is this—plants that live. When I say those that live, it’s because we’re in the mid-Atlantic area. We’re not south or north. There are some plants we can get away with over on the Eastern Shore, where it’s a little warmer, but in Northern Virginia, you don’t have a chance of having certain plants live. You must be careful with what you’re putting in the ground and where you’re putting it. Here’s a couple of names of some plants. If I’m planting one perennial, it would be Nepeta, which is a type of catnip. I use it because it’s very durable, it’s drought-tolerant, and it has a long blooming period with a nice light blue flower. And the deer don’t eat it. So that’s a perennial. If I’m looking for a good shrub, it’s Osmanthus. I like it because it will grow almost anywhere, it’s evergreen, like a holly, and it has a real strong fragrant flower in early October. It’s one of the sweetest fragrances that you’ll ever smell, and it’s a pleasant surprise, especially in October. We use it as a hedgerow, we use it as screen plantings, we use it as a specimen, and we use a lot of them. If I’m planting a tree, I like a redbud more than any other native plant. It naturally grows on the edge of the woods. It starts the spring off with lavender flowers all along the branches, mixing in with the dogwoods blooming right after them. It’s also very durable. We always challenge our designers to use plants that are readily available and that thrive. We don’t need to take unnecessary risks with questionable plants if we have a great design. AH Thanks to Julie Patronik for her help with this story.

A quick little getaway to Georgetown is all that’s needed for a stateside French experience. Chez Billy Sud is in the heart of Georgetown with a subtly lit dining room, chic mint and gold walls, and tables of white linen. Voilà, there you are, transported to Paris.

plump morsels of escargot are classically French; be sure to ask for extra slices of bread to mop up the rich sauce. Every bite is worth it. There is a pleasant earthiness to the Foie de Volaille, a glass ramekin of creamy and flavorful chicken liver mousse, with a subtle Madeira gelée shimmering on the surface.

We choose a bottle of Pouilly-Fumé from Domaine Francis Blanchet. This 2020 Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp and happy wine with flavors that inspire us to dream of the South of France in the summertime. The menu is brief and direct, with quintessential French cuisine.

Regard the humble beet rendered sublime with its treatment at Chez Billy Sud. These beets are pickled in red wine with slices of pear, a smattering of green onion, and a dash of tender greens. This composed salad slowly reveals itself in layers as you dive into it. First, you encounter the beets and pear, dotted with scoops of goat cheese; then perhaps you taste the walnuts; and finally, beneath it all, a serving of brown Lentils du Puy with a unifying purée of beet at the bottom of the bowl. This is a balance of tart and mild flavors,

crunchy and smooth textures, the fresh and the pickled. We are in a definitive French bistro; for the main course, we have to opt for the representative dishes: Moules-Frites, SteakFrites, and Confit de Canard. The generouslysized mussels are cooked in a lovely brine with hints of Dijon mustard, cream, and Herbes de Provence, emboldened with pastis. The mussel shells are the perfect scoop for the flavorful bouillon. Since we ordered the Moules-Frites and the Steak-Frites, there are plenty of frites to go around. The fries are crisp on the exterior, creamy on the interior. Absolutely perfect. The steak is served rare, with a superb, flavorful char, and comes with a side of Béarnaise, the better to dip your fries into. The Confit de Canard is super subtle, with a tender crusty duck leg on more lentils and a carrot purée. It melts in your mouth. Dinner at Chez Billy Sud was pretty darn perfect. The only disappointment was in the dessert course. The cheesecake is salty. The apple cake is dry. And the chocolate mousse is not super chocolaty. But the mains more than make up for the vagaries of dessert. Dining out society is back and alive and well. With the added enchantment of an ersatz trip to Paris, at Chez Billy Sud, you will be well taken care of. AH

A Day in Georgetown Georgetown is not far from Annapolis—just a 45-minute drive away—but it feels like another world. There’s a sophistication to the historic buildings and urban design that you can’t help but feel as you walk along any of the largely residential streets. It’s something in the atmosphere. This is very likely one of the most beautiful towns in the country. Along with significant architecture, Georgetown offers a host of upscale restaurants, shops, and deluxe showrooms to fill a day. - Christine Fillat
