Vol. 7, No. 3 2016 17
PUBLISHERS’ LETTER Why do we write about homes? First of all, the home is a complex affair. It’s where we eat, sleep, dress, escape, and socialize with family and friends. Humans living in a home decide whether it is a space of conflict or comfort. We devote so much attention to the home not only because we are showcasing spaces in which the most talented professionals are involved in creating them, but also because the home reveals so much about our culture and values. Even though homes are generally private spaces, they collectively define a community and way of life. In Annapolis, the Chesapeake Bay plays a defining role in a large number of homes. Just look at the use of windows in many waterfront homes. They are designed, as noted in our feature story, to protect the people from nature while at the same time turning nature into a framed picturesque view. With each issue of Annapolis Home, we feature residences that tell a story—a story that is almost anthropological in character—and that reveal the character of the city and region we call home.

Seventy-five years ago, the Federated Garden Clubs, Maryland House and Garden Pilgrimage, the Naval Academy, and other groups joined together to save the Hammond-Harwood house at 19 Maryland Avenue. Today this residence, open to the public, is widely acknowledged as one of the most perfectly designed five-part plan homes of the colonial period. A historic home of this age and character, which now has both a preservation and educational mission, requires constant upkeep supported by the community. You can support the HammondHarwood House by attending its Secret Garden Tour of the Murray Hill neighborhood on June 4 and June 5. To promote the tour, we are offering you a sneak preview of one of the gardens on the tour.
2
The Hammond-Harwood House and Historic Annapolis are independent entities, with both requiring our support. Historic Annapolis, which is also charged with preserving local architectural treasures, hosts events throughout the year, including Music of Colonial and Revolutionary Annapolis, which will take place at the James Brice House on June 4 at 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Be sure to visit the Historic Annapolis website often because their public programming is outstanding and rich (annapolis.org).

WHY
does a bird build a nest that is round? Why do our homes rely on rectangular forms? These questions arise when considering Dean and Cassidy Papadopoulos’ new home. Their story begins when they bought a thirty-five year-old house in an Annapolis neighborhood. Situated on a bluff overlooking a creek and forest, it needed an overhaul. Today, thanks to the homeowners, an architect, and builder, it is composed of modern angles and materials that complement the waterfront and natural world. Dean and Cassidy were very deliberate in deciding on the type of contemporary home they wanted to build. Dean explains that they “wanted a home that fit in with the heavily wooded and waterfront lot. Because of that we wanted to use natural materials like clear finished wood, stucco, and rusted steel in order for it to fit well with the colors and feel of the environment. This consideration
22
ANNAPOLIS HOME
naturally led us to a more contemporary look.” He further adds, humorously, that they also “wanted something different than the traditional colonial (we are not George and Martha Washington), a style imported from other countries (we are not French, Spanish, or extras in Game of Thrones), or the Annapolis/coastal look (we were not building a beach house).” A local architect provided structural and site plans and secured permits for the renovation. However, Dean and Cassidy had a clear vision for both the design and the mechanics of the house and reworked the architect’s basic plan, adapting it to their vision. It was a self-confident, almost audacious move, but it worked beautifully. Matt Long of Gate One Builders, the Annapolis-based general contractor for the house, admits to some initial trepidation about the project. “It’s a relationship that on paper you’d be afraid of.”
Steel panels compliment the main staircase and echo the deeper hues of the surrounding woods. Panels were designed by the homeowners; stairs and panels were executed by Gutierrez Studios.

But he was quick to add, “it couldn’t have gone better.” Kevin Weston of Gutierrez Studios, the Baltimore artisan workshop that provided numerous metal items for the home, had similar concerns. When clients without architects had tried to hire the studio before, he’d ask, “Wouldn’t you hire a dentist if you needed dental work?” However, like Long, Weston soon learned that he had no cause for concern. They both quickly came to appreciate the commitment of time, intellectual energy, and design vision that Dean and Cassidy brought to the project. The single-family home, with a hyphen connecting two structures, contrasting roof heights, decks, and outbuilding, has the feel of an artful, intimate compound. The garage in front (a new addition to the property) is finished in a light-colored stucco-like material with a gable facing the street. It’s simple and straightforward, a farmhouse vernacular in the style of Hugh Newell Jacobsen. Rather than try to mimic the main house, it takes a more interesting tack, celebrating its visual independence. The front and rear of the house are sheathed in Cumaru, a sustainably grown Brazilian hardwood. Large metal cased windows provide a visual counterbalance to the deep rich tone of the wood. There is a bit of suspense to the entry. The front door is off to the side and only comes into view as you walk past the garage. It’s punctuated with horizontal strips of glass and it is massive. Wide enough to march an army through, it cleverly pivots open. Perpendicular to the door, there is a simple, elegant reflecting pool complete with a fountain component under a wall of glass.
For photos to left: The second floor master bedroom, bath, and great room overlook treetops and branches. To reach these spaces, you must climb the stairs that function much like a tree harboring a nest.
The foyer with its awkward dimensions would present a design challenge to the most seasoned professional. However, Cassidy and Dean found smart and elegant solutions. For example, a curved wall provides a visual counterpoint to the angular custom steel staircase. It might be a boring expanse of white if not for two large steel panels that Gutierrez Studios fabricated to perfectly follow the curve of the wall. They’ve been given a rusted patina and call to mind large abstract paintings. Cassidy conceived the forms and Dean designed them. The steel panels are impressive as is the third Gutierrez feature in the room, a large “skylight” that is actually a glass floor in the room above. It’s the Papadopoulos’ solution to the challenge of bringing light to the potentially dark foyer without sacrificing floor space above to create a two-story entryway. In designing the interiors, Dean and Cassidy used steel, wood, and stone elements to unify the home. In the first floor den, Gutierrez fabricated a custom recessed rack for holding pool cues and a matching free standing bar top. Made from a single sheet of steel, the bar top bends at a sharp 90 degree angle to become the leg that supports itself. The visual simplicity belies the sophisticated craft that went into the top’s construction. The house’s flooring is a unifying material—the entire second floor uses the same Preverco prefinished hardwood by Beers Flooring in Annapolis, and the first floor is completely finished in a commercial grade stained concrete provided by Hyde Concrete of Pasadena. Absolute black granite is provided by Atlas Stone Fabricators in Odenton and used inside and out.
BEFORE The home is purposely unobtrusive; the off-center placement of the front door is unusual but subtle.
To reach the main living space, you climb the stairs—they function like a tree that hosts a nest. The second floor is loft-like with floor-to-ceiling metal cased windows that wrap around the far corner to capture the view of a bend in the creek. The storefront style windows, supplied by Western Window Systems and installed by Loewen Window Center of Annapolis, are elegant and integrate the home with nature while still providing safe shelter. Cassidy says that the second floor “townhouse” style design was conceived to “maximize the light exposure as the sun tracks across the sky during the day.”

Vol. 7, No. 3 2016 27
Both the dining room and kitchen are open to the living room and the water view beyond. A handsome waterfall center island anchors the kitchen. The glass backsplash gets a jolt of bright color behind the cooktop. Gutierrez Studios was hard at work here too. They fabricated the large zinc countertop, which also provides an informal eating space for family or guests. On the living room side of the counter there are five custom guest stools, also fabricated by Gutierrez Studios. The open flow continues into the master bedroom where a pair of modern barn doors slides into place for privacy. The master bathroom, with LG Porcelain White Quartz by Atlas Stone, has a glass walled two-person shower and a bathtub that’s organic and sinuous. It’s set on a bed of river rocks in an alcove with a tall wood wall that seems to rise forever behind it. A glass door off a breakfast area at the far end of the kitchen opens to a terrace on top of the single-story hyphen connecting the house to the garage. The terrace, which provides access to an office on the second floor of the garage, is representative of the attention to every detail that went into the design and build of the house. This may be because the project’s principal players are kindred spirits. Gate One’s Matt Long says that he and his partner John Pilli, who

are Naval Academy graduates, had military careers which taught them to be process oriented. In Long’s words they “see the goal and work our way backwards.” Kevin Weston talks about “working backwards to get to an end product.” This might not be the way all house builders or metal fabricators approach their work, but if you wanted to identify a common thread in the overall design, this approach would be it. And it was no surprise to learn that Dean’s professional background is in software where success relies on the same approach—an abstract concept is transformed into code that in turn becomes a physical, useful product. To the non-technical person, there is a good bit of mystery involved in technology’s creation and function. And, there is a mystery to every space. Why does every shelter, no matter what its form, have a center? With its visionary beginnings and skilled interpreters, the Papadopoulos’ home is special—perhaps its center existed before the first shovel broke ground. AH

Swimming Pool Houses

Rustic Retreat on Wye River Photography by Curtis Martin
Sherri and Larry Gott wanted to create a “gathering place” for friends and family overlooking the pool at their vacation home on the Wye River in Queenstown, Maryland—a place for swimming or dining in summer or watching football by the fireside in winter. Designer Bob Moreland of Lundberg Builders in Stevensville, Maryland, was able to fulfill their desire for a pool house echoing the main home’s “staycation” spirit. He and his team created a 21' x 30' space that can be used year-round and artfully repeats the main home’s design elements. “For the exterior, we chose siding, stone veneer and roof shingles that closely matched the materials used for the house,” says Moreland. “We installed new concrete paving stones and pool coping to the existing pool and patio area to match and complement both structures.” Moreland added a retaining wall, a patio with a fire pit, and cushioned seating on the left side of the small building, all positioned for easy access to the pool and terrace and with extensive views of the river. A cedar-walled outdoor shower flanks the right side. Interior designer Carole Lindenberg of Bethesdabased Potomac Designs, who worked with the Gotts on the main residence, coordinated with Moreland to create an inviting open floor plan with a cathedral ceiling of 1" x 6" tongue and groove oak with a limed finish and floors constructed from porcelain tiles resembling wood. Walls painted a soothing shade of green and earth-toned furnishings complete the picture. To accommodate the couple’s wish for a shared indoor/outdoor space, Moreland suggested a folding glass wall featuring seven bifold door

refrigerator with icemaker, and a microwave. An integrated bath rounds out the thoughtful design. “It’s just a happy, festive place to be . . . we could almost dispense with the main house,” reflects Larry. A pool house that is too successful? That, notes Moreland, is a very good thing.

Craftsman Style on Boone Creek Photography Courtesy of McHale Landscape Design
Summertime at the craftsman style home of a family near Boone Creek in Oxford, Maryland, is a lively affair with family and friends gathered around Bruce and Carolyn Helmly’s pool and patio. But, the parents were tired of having their teenagers and young children track through the main house with wet feet. They needed a poolside bathroom for changing along with a storage room for equipment, chemicals, and pool toys—a sort of open pavilion with a shaded area and fireplace to prolong the seasons. However, the structure should fit in with the architecture of their home. Eager to proceed, they contacted McHale Landscape Design, the company that installed their existing pool, patio, and outdoor kitchen. Ryan Davis, the lead designer on the project, and Sandra Moffatt, the head of McHale’s construction division, assembled a team to create a pool house to meet the couple’s needs. The resulting craftsman style cottage set against a wooded background and beautifully landscaped reflects the style of the property’s main house. Measuring 24' x 24', the cottage’s stonework, shingled gables, and pergola maintain the craftsman feel while concealing the fact that the front wall is open to provide the airflow the Helmlys desired. The interior is finished in the arts and craft style as well with dark-stained woods and a gasburning fireplace with a floor-to-ceiling stone surround that enables the family to open the pool house earlier in the season and use it through Thanksgiving. The Davis/Moffatt team’s biggest challenge was the inclusion of a bathroom and storage room in the open air pavilion. To meet that challenge, they designed a central hallway toward the back of the pool house with a powder room to the left

and a storage room to the right. “To add warmth and improve airflow, we vaulted the ceilings and added ceiling fans,” Davis notes. “The tongue and groove Douglas Fir finished ceiling follows the architecture of the roof and the combination of dark woods and a Pennsylvania fieldstone hearth sets off the project.” Casual furnishings and a tan and cream color palette prevail throughout. the pavilion to help transition from the interior to the pool area and provide a shaded space for outdoor dining. The concrete pavers beneath the pergola mark a transition from the floor tiles of the interior to the more casual pool deck with its outdoor kitchen and subtly concealed shower. Now there is both physical beauty and the beauty of a problem solved; the Helmlys can welcome friends of all ages and say farewell (at least for the most part) to wet footprints. AH

Vol. 7, No. 3 2016 55
The Oceanis, with five cabins and three heads, sleeps ten comfortably.
Beneteaus are as indigenous to Annapolis as are sailors. It is a treat to see these sleek beauties (no matter what size) docked serenely in Back Creek or slicing through whitecaps on the Chesapeake Bay. Beneteau’s Oceanis 55 made its debut in 2013 and, with its new configuration and modern styling, has been watched closely by the sailing world ever since. Could this beamy giant live up to its esteemed predecessors? It is worth noting that, three years into the game, the Oceanis 55 took top honors at the 2015 Vancouver International Boat Show. It won “thanks to its well thought out interior and its innovative modular design,” notes judge Dale Miller. “It was really an impressive boat on the dock. There were other boats that impressed, but it was hard to top this 55-footer.” The Oceanis 55 is designed by Berret Racoupeau. The hull is sleeker than earlier models and the masts have been moved aft, allowing for a larger headsail and a slightly smaller main. The result is two sails of nearly equal size, which provides a balanced, easy-to-handle sailing experience. There are three keel sizes to choose from. For smoother ocean crossings, the deck is cored with balsa to reduce the boat’s vertical center of gravity and increase sail-carrying capacity. Three years later, the Oceanis 55 continues to gain attention, distinguishing itself among large cruising sailing yachts. There are extra special things to note: In addition to being easy to sail when short handed, it has a huge swim platform. And, it can be purchased locally through Annapolis Yacht Sales in Eastport. The Hammond-Harwood Secret Garden Tour
Vol. 7, No. 3 2016 61
62
ANNAPOLIS HOME
This Annapolis garden of David and Belinda Butler is one of fourteen gardens that will be open for the 17th annual Hammond-Harwood House Secret Garden Tour. The self-directed tour has become a much-anticipated rite of spring for serious horticultural aficionados, casual fans of gardening, and the plain old curious among us. This garden packs a big punch into a small space. The design gives the homeowners an outdoor world that stylishly serves as an extension of their house. A colonnaded covered porch provides a shaded space for dining. The outdoor living room is defined by a square fountain and the geometry of a flagstone patio, with a small lawn creating a naturalistic counterbalance. The lawn is softened with a curved stone wall, a raised planting bed, and a trio of river birches. The tour is a major fundraiser for the historic Hammond-Harwood House, which is not just the pride of Annapolis but also a shining star of Georgian architecture in the United States. AH
Tickets are $30 in advance or $35 on the day of the tour. Mark June 4 and 5 on your calendar. Visit hammondharwoodhouse.org or call 410–263–4683 for more information. ESTABLISHED 1981

Straight Up on Dining Out
Have a hankering to explore the finest wines the world has to offer, have a bite to eat, and share it with friends? Consider visiting Grapes Wine Bar on Forest Drive in Annapolis. Patrick Bouculat dreamed of having an old-style wine bar like those in his native France. Using the connections he developed over his thirty years of working in the wine industry (in wholesale and in management at Mills Fine Wine and Spirits on Main Street, and at his own wine store, Wine Cellars of Annapolis), he offers limited editions of wines from vineyards with smaller productions, by the glass, and at affordable prices. Grapes has won the Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence two years in a row. With the addition of Chef Carro Oldham, who trained at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and who has thirteen years of experience in Parisian restaurants, Bouculat’s dream is a reality. Chef Oldham’s inspiration for the menu comes from ingredients that are fresh and in season, and, of utmost importance, can go along with the wines. “We try to source locally. Our food is French inspired with a modern twist, with new colors and new flavors,” says Chef Oldham.
We arrive rather early, 5 p.m. on a Monday evening. The aroma of roast chicken greets us at the door, Monday being roast chicken and frites night. The room is not crowded yet, but as the night progresses, the bar stools and the dining tables gradually fill. Some diners eat alone. The decor is faultless, rustic, with wine barrels along the wall. Tall mirrors reflect the bustle. Soft natural light illuminates the chic scene through large plate glass windows. Not a detail is out of place. We begin our journey into the menu with glasses of wine: a 2014 Biale Black Chicken Zinfandel from Napa for me, and a 2010 Château Gontey Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Bordeaux for my companion. A blackboard lists the wine specials for the day, with prices ranging from $9 to $19 a glass. The excellent house-made pâté is bacon-enveloped and Madeira enlivened. Chunky with meat, mushrooms, and pistachios, these slices of pâté are generous. The plate is a feast for the eyes as well as the palate, with carefully arranged dollops of mustard and a clever criss-cross of cornichons. We are transported to Paris.
Vol. 7, No. 3 2016 67
A selection of Wellfleet oysters, salty with Cape Cod brine, come with a duo of spicy Creole and tangy Mignonette sauces. So fresh! And so French. Following Chef Oldham’s vow to offer new flavors, her beet salad contains two ingredients one doesn’t find often in a restaurant: red miner greens and flaxseed. Adding a slightly astringent flavor, and looking like a veggie from outer space, the red miner works well with the bold-flavored greens in the salad: the crisp frisée, radicccio, and endive. Dressed with a light flaxseed vinaigrette, this otherwise perfect salad could have used more beets to live up to its name. We could not have visited Grapes on a Monday night without having the Monday Night Special roast chicken. This is true comfort food. The classically prepared bird is simply roasted and tender, with juicy light and dark meat. Served with pommes frites, this chicken will give you a reason to get out of the house and go out on a Monday night. The fois gras is a complicated dish, glazed with honey and plated with pain d’epices and poached pears. Combining sweetness with the savory, the fois gras is certainly delicious. This is an entrée, but perhaps one could choose it to wrap up a meal, it is that sweet. A hazelnut crumble contributes visual interest; sculptural on the plate, it was, on its own, somewhat flavorless and over baked.

All of the pastas are house made. An alluring squid-ink fettuccine is rich with scallops, shrimp, and butter. This is a dish that we will come back for on future visits. Chef Oldham prepares her own desserts. Her creamy cheesecake has a crust made with walnuts and butter, a welcome departure from the traditional graham cracker crust. Her super smooth pots de crème are perfection in a cup, with a delicate butterscotch flavor. Grapes has a loyal following. Some guests visit up to four evenings a week. Many can be counted on showing up for Monday night roast chicken. There is a buzz about Grapes; this is what happens when you combine a thoughtful menu with an out-of-the ordinary wine selection. With a friendly bar and outdoor seating, this feels like home away from home. Grapes has a lot to offer Annapolitans who love good food, conviviality, and delicious wine. AH
