PUBLISHERS’ LETTER Welcome to the May/June issue of Annapolis Home Magazine! Our homes are miniature universes that reflect our values, rituals, and inner and outer lives. Often, they are connected intimately with our gardens, whether large or small, hand-tended or professionally maintained. Inside we explore this theme. You will find stories about homes and the mature gardens that surround them, including a residence on Harness Creek with six acres lovingly planted over 35 years. Its exterior has been transformed and a guest house added. Also, new gardens have been planted to attract and feed butterflies and bees. In subsequent pages, you’ll find a grand home in Easton on the water with a long classic drive flanked by flowering trees and gardens planted to create, according to the homeowner, “a riot of color” essential to brightening her psyche. From her gardens she draws upon the energy natural beauty mysteriously brings. We also introduce something special in this issue. Landscape architect Robert Hruby shares his personal reflections on how a garden evolves, beginning with its primal beginnings in spring. In subsequent issues, he will share his meditations and photography about summer, fall, and winter gardens. He encourages us all to slow down and connect with our ever-changing landscapes, to savor its slow, unfolding and invisible beauty, despite or perhaps because of our alwayschanging lives. We bring you much more that we leave you to discover on your own. Sit back, relax, and have a good browsing and reading session! Enjoy,

An allee of cherry blossoms alongside the driveway creates dramatic entry to the property.
Once Ginny and Michael Borner retired from running their global specialty paint company, they realized they no longer needed to live in New York. High on their wish list was finding a waterfront home, though they didn’t know where. “At the time, we didn’t even know what the Eastern Shore was,” they recall. But when they found Easton, “we got lucky.” Now full-time Shore residents, the Borners say they “pinch themselves every day” that they live in a town where they have made close friends (“more than we had in New York!”), enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle, and—a bonus in the winter—have to deal with much less snow. And, oh, yes, then there’s their new home—an early 19th-century 9,000 square foot farmhouse on 15 acres on the Miles River. “It’s more than we initially were looking for,” they say, “but there were no smaller houses on the water.” Since purchasing the home in 2014, the couple has paid particular attention to the property itself, working with Steven McHale of McHale Landscape Design. McHale had already worked with the previous owner for more than a decade and was well familiar with the waterfront site.

ANNAPOLIS HOME
At the time McHale began working with the Borners, the driveway curved toward the house and garage, and a tennis court was situated in the lawn area about half way up the drive. There was also a lot between the current property and an existing tree line that was not well-maintained. The Borners have since purchased that adjoining three-acre lot in which Ginny has created a wildflower meadow with blackeyed Susans, and a riot of blue, purple, and white flowers. “When the black-eyed Susans are in bloom, the meadow is a field of yellow,” says Ginny.
Both the previous homeowner and the Borners are partial to the cherry blossoms that are so prevalent in Washington, DC, so McHale created an allee of blossoms alongside the driveway for a dramatic—especially in springtime—entry to the property. Throughout the rest of the grounds, native perennials keep the gardens in bloom from spring to autumn.
Though the home was long ago named “The Willows,” there were, in fact, no willows to be found. McHale remedied that situation by planting 26 willow trees around the perimeter of the property.
Now that they are well and truly settled into their new home and new lifestyle, the Borners say they have no further projects in mind. “At our home in New York, we were doing something every few years,” they say. “This time we did everything up front and got everybody out! Now we just enjoy having it to ourselves!” These New York transplants have the Shore’s casual lifestyle and something even more valuable: time to watch their gardens grow. AH
“Our design was to create the feeling of a country estate,” he says of the overall landscape design. The driveway was redesigned with brick pavers so that an entry circle leads to the front door, while an 8’ in diameter old cast iron sugar kettle was converted to a water feature, providing a focal point to the entryway. The remnants of a long-ago church ruin down the road from the property provided the inspiration for the columns and basin of the water feature. “The church was constructed of granite, so we decided to use a similar granite since there is no real natural stone in the area,” McHale notes.
The Borners also added a pool surround and screened-in porch with seating and dining areas furnished by Country Casual Teak.

Architect Scarlett Breeding of Alt Breeding Associates and Raymond Gauthier of Lynbrook of Annapolis have professions that demand visual perfection. However, the success of each project depends on what is invisible: details. It is not an understatement to say that Breeding and Gauthier are obsessed with them. Details follow their own natural laws. One detail builds upon another propelled by an inner force that if not tamed can take a job to the dark side. Or, at the very least produce a home that may look perfect but will not hold. Digging from a wellspring of experience, Gauthier says, “Like all remodeling projects, you open something up to move a wall and find four things and then fix those four things and end up with another eight and exponentially it increases.” This happened to a 30-year-old home on 6 acres on Harness Creek. The owners hired Breeding to “freshen things up” and to design an apartment over the garage. Breeding turned to Gauthier to execute her design and build the project. Breeding and Gauthier gave them what they asked for and more—transformation. “I wanted the home freshened up. But now what I have is magical, it’s my dream house. And Scarlett gave us something priceless: for the first time in 30 years, we have a sunset.” “We started small,” notes Breeding, who advocated for dormers and new windows on the home’s front and back façade and on the garage. This move unified the two structures and, with the addition of cascading roofs, gave both buildings a shingle-style sensibility that reflects Annapolis’ riverfront vernacular. A special detail is the small nautical oval that, along with the lyrical trim work, gives the home a storybook feel. With these modifications, this house, to the untrained eye, looks completely different from its former incarnation. However, Breeding did not enlarge the footprint. She explains that instead of changing the home’s basic forms, she replicated them. “We repeated masses until there was an architectural composition,” she says.

ANNAPOLIS HOME
The homeowners are avid gardeners and planted the 6-acre lot themselves over a 30-year time span. Campion Hruby Landscape Architects provided structure and additional dimensions to the landscape.
One of the home’s most striking features is the second-story bridge to the guesthouse that seems suspended in air. Its construction called for innovation. “It’s very long without any columns holding it up…there has to be a special steel structure inside it, so it is almost floating. We had to conceal this, to make sure it doesn’t look bulky,” explains Gauthier. Another job requiring detailed engineering was to build a cantilevered circular porch for the guesthouse. “That was extremely challenging because not only is it cantilevered, it is circular, rather than square. Naturally, it had to comply with all the loading codes. And it had to comply with Scarlett’s requirement of minimal structure holding it,” notes Gauthier. To solve the problems, Gauthier used a special steel design that was fabricated and then fieldwelded to hold it all together. “That was a fun detail,” says Gauthier. Functioning at a high level of precision is like walking a tightrope. But this is something Gauthier and his team thrives on. “What we enjoy is being the tech in the architect—we call ourselves architectural builders. They do the ‘art’ and we do the ‘tech.’” The “tech” is rarely glamorous. The hardware in the guesthouse, right down to the doorknobs, has been mindfully chosen and installed. In fact, Gauthier was concerned about each screw head. “If it’s a Phillips screw head, there is an “x” on it and it looks modern. If it’s a slot head, its period. On top of that, they must all be installed the same way, either vertically or horizontally. Otherwise when you stand back it looks all higgledy-piggledy.” You do not notice the period-style doorknobs beyond a subtle admiration. A sloppy job would spotlight them or, worse, make the visitor vaguely uneasy.
Vol. 9, No. 3 2018 43
The bridge connects two homes and is also a gesture, conveying that the old house is in relationship with the new, which will soon, too, become loved and weathered. A special detail is the nautical window and trim that matches those on the front facade.
The property has always been special to the homeowners, even without the sunset. Over the years these avid gardeners planted the whole 6 acres themselves. The gardens continue to grow. At the time of this interview, the owners, with the help of Bob Hruby of Campion Hruby Landscape Architects had just planted 400 rosebushes, 600 elephant ears, 1,000 Caladium, and gardens that welcome butterflies and bees. This homestead, located in one of Annapolis’ rural neighborhoods, has grounds well traveled by friends and family. There is generosity here—daffodils mass and spill over lush lawns; giant trees bend low over the water. And there is a stability that comes from a job well done. The homeowner who “loves Scarlett’s thoughts” deliberately chose Breeding; the couple sees Gauthier when he comes over to check on the home annually. Paul Collins has maintained the grounds since he was 19. Breeding truly understood her clients, who raised their family here and hope for grandchildren. The bridge connects two homes and is also a gesture, conveying that the old house is in relationship with the new, which will soon, too, become loved and weathered. This is the flip side of the natural law of details. When all is flowing in the right direction, a positive charge is created and the exceptional is possible. Reflections ON A PLOT OF LAND By Robert C. Hruby, ASLA
We lead busy lives, in fact we brag about being busy. We multitask, work on vacation, and conference while our kids play on three travel teams. I am just as guilty. I design and build gardens for a living, and I strive to wrap my clients daily lives with an evolving natural beauty. I try to connect people, their houses, cars and life styles, to their land. I do this with hopes that they will stop and notice. Gardens are a testament to where we live, how the sun rises, where the water flows and what season we are in. Successful gardens are interesting all the time, with things constantly changing, evolving, growing, flowering and dying. If you don’t stop and pay attention, you will miss it! I am forcing myself to pause and notice the beauty of several gardens in Annapolis and I am inviting you to join me. Emerging (Spring) Spring is always slow to emerge, as winter appears to drag on. As the sun gets higher and the soil warms up, things start happening underfoot. Hopefully you have cut back the perennial foliage from last season’s growth by now, so you can revel in the beauty that will soon spring forth. As the cherry trees are blossoming around the tidal basin the perennial “ground cover” layer of the garden is evolving at a fast pace. These herbaceous layers of the garden are alive and growing in a fast paced competition with their companion plants. Nowhere is the cycle of life more evident and ephemeral in the garden. Think about a woodland setting, where all the bulbs and spring perennials get busy growing and flowering, before the trees leaf out. As the forest layers leaf out, they fade into the background. These layers can occupy the same space in your garden, under your deciduous trees and shrubs.
Daffodils (Narcissus) - I know this late winter blooming bulb is very common, but it is a dependable perennial bulb that is also deerproof. Many of your perennials and ornamental grasses are not up until May. You can never plant enough. Mix white, yellows, orange and cream colors.
Vol. 9, No. 3 2018 51
Golden Ragwort (Packera aurea) - My favorite native creeping perennial for shady or sunny areas with medium to wet soils. This plant really covers the ground and blooms in a carpet of yellow, starting in April. The basal foliage is evergreen, so you don’t have to waste your money on mulch.
Virginia Bluebells (Mertensia virginica) If you have any moist, rich woodland areas, this wonderful native spring ephemeral can naturalize with other shade loving plants. The leafy foliage and blue flowers appear when nothing else is happening, but it goes dormant for the summer.
52
ANNAPOLIS HOME
Blue Flag Iris (Iris versicolor) - This native Iris for medium to wet areas starts out as a structural, spikey, bluegreen foliage with the vertical tips pointing skyward. Purple tinted flower buds open to violet blue flowers in early summer. We use this in rain gardens and swales.
Camassia - These late spring flowering bulbs are a great companion to damp loving perennials. The Camassia flowers dance above the growing foliage of summer perennials, adding a burst of color after the daffodils have faded. We like white and blue Camassia.

Seeds
for Thought
Being aware of what is happening in your garden
Plant things worth experiencing throughout the year. Experience your garden. The garden is constantly evolving by the year, month, week, day and hour. Being attuned to these changes reveals layers of nature that you are not aware of. Experiencing the moments in your garden
Nothing is permanent in the garden. The way that particular thing that you saw happen, may never happen exactly that way again. Gardeners try to create gardens with predictable cycles of structure, blooms, color, texture. To be aware of these cycles gives you a much deeper appreciation of your land. By appreciating the fact that very little of this is really permanent makes anticipating what will happen next even more exciting. There are things that happen hourly, daily, weekly and monthly in a garden and if you miss it, you may have to wait another year. AH
Embrace a planting style that allows for and celebrates the seasonal cycles of your region.

THE SUPERIOR ADVANTAGE
America’s finest homes are being built on our foundations. Maybe it’s because Superior Walls is the leader in residential precast foundation systems. Maybe it’s because our high-strength concrete walls are created in a factory-controlled environment with built-in insulation. Or maybe homeowners just like warm, dry basements. Whatever the reason, more new homes are resting on Superior Walls foundations.

Creating Balance in a Room By Margaret Blunt | Photography by Geoffrey Hodgdon
“A man travels the world over in search of what he needs and returns home to find it.” - George A. Moore, Irish Poet

ANNAPOLIS HOME
Creating balance in this room presented a challenge. While the vaulted ceiling’s dramatic angle opened the room and made it feel more spacious, the varying uneven lines of the ceiling, a soffit and smaller windows made the room feel somewhat intimidating, restless, and uneasy. So we sought to evoke feelings of stability by giving the eye a place to rest. We began by creating a strong architectural line around the room starting with new built-ins flanking the fireplace and continuing with the decorative drapery rod of the custom window treatments. The woven wood roman shades and drapery panels were designed and installed to give the illusion of larger and taller windows. Lastly, the contractor had an excellent suggestion: to expand the room’s small entrance by taking out half of the stair wall. Upon entering, the eye is directed to the built-ins. Once line and balance were achieved, we could refresh the space. Our client chose to keep the room’s original color palette of greys and pinks but painted over the once-popular faux finished walls with an updated millennial pale petal pink. They selected a neutral gray tweed sofa, a subtle but fun pattern for their accent chairs, and a beautiful wool and silk rug to anchor the seating area. New lamps, coffee table, and accent tables with metallic, glass, and marble connect beautifully with the fireplace’s new stone surround. We transformed the two smaller, separate windows with embroidered geometric drapery panels and light-reflective woven wood roman shades. And the built-ins showcase the client’s collection of art and souvenirs gathered from their world travels. AH Margaret Blunt is the owner of Sew Beautiful which provides custom window coverings and soft furnishings with an emphasis on specialty and challenging window projects. Festival of Fountains at Longwood Gardens
May 7 to September 30, 2018
Historians point out that gardens with fountains have been mystical places, sort of earthly equivalents of paradise, for both Christians and Muslims. Islamic mosques have fountains where worshippers can wash themselves before entering. The Chinese assign holy and spiritual meanings to springs, called dragon pools. Fountains have also been symbols of power and wealth in public buildings and private residences. Flowing water and fountains bring both perpetual motion and calmness to private gardens and public plazas. Come see for yourself. Longwood Gardens is home to the most significant fountain collection in North America. In June, it celebrates all the fountains in its Gardens, from Pierre S. du Pont’s first single-jet fountain on the Flower Garden Walk to the 1,719-jet Main Fountain Garden. There are tours, lectures and fountain performances throughout the day, some accompanied by music, and illuminated performances in the evening, including fireworks. Make a reservation, as spaces sell out early. AH For more information, go to longwoodgardens.org.

LEWNES’ STEAKHOUSE AN (ALMOST) GREAT STEAKHOUSE BY CHRISTINE FILLAT
Lewnes’ Steakhouse has a speakeasy kind of vibe. The exterior, though tidy, is unassuming, sitting on 4th Street and Severn Avenue in an Eastport neighborhood populated with lots of other eateries. You enter through a corner door into a tight bar where you could easily while away the hours with a cocktail and some new-found friends, watching the Orioles try to win a ball game. There is a dining room with super tall, rather private (and somewhat careworn) banquettes. A pendant lamp fills your table with a pool of light. Jazz is in the air. Vintage photographs fill the walls. These are shots of the Lewnes family; four generations have been serving Annapolitans from this location since 1921. This generation made Lewnes into a steakhouse in 1994. The menu takes up one page, offering basic steak house fare; mostly meat, with entrees ranging in price from $19.95 for chicken breast, to $54.95 for a 25-ounce bone-in cowboy steak. There are limited appetizers and seafood options, including oysters on the half shell and clams casino. The Oysters Rockefeller are fresh, lightly broiled, with rich, creamy spinach, and topped with Hollandaise. This is a perfectly executed dish,
68
ANNAPOLIS HOME
one that we could imagine dropping by to enjoy. It is the high point of our meal. A St. Francis Zinfandel, from old vines in Sonoma Valley, serves us well. The house salad is ordinary, with a handful of lettuce greens, red onion, some black olives and a whole lot of pedestrian blue cheese dressing. The dressing is overly generous, with sparse chunks of blue cheese. Dressing on the side would have been a wise move. There is nothing in this salad to make it special. A rib eye steak is prepared exactly how we ordered it, medium rare. It is a really good steak that needs no embellishments—tender and glistening with just a bit of fat. “The broilers are 1800 degrees,” says General Manager Joshua Malter; “that really takes that marbling to a higher level. It gives you that extra flavor.” The crab cake is plunked on the plate with a bit of greens, half of a lemon, and a side of bottled cocktail sauce. This is a very basic offering. The crab cakes are simply good. There’s a little filler. At $33.95, perhaps it could be a little more exciting. This is the land of crab, after all.
The sides are generous and served family style. Mashed potatoes are rich and creamy, but a bit salty. Sautéed asparagus is fresh and crunchy. The key lime pie is sourced locally, from Cakes and Confections of Severna Park and it’s great. The crust is good; the texture amazing. It is a perfect dessert. The level of noise increases in the amount of time we are there. People just keep pouring in the doors. There is a lot of activity here. Clearly, it’s a popular place. But we feel something is missing. It’s not quite exceptional. It turns out, Lewnes has a variety of special sauces that, if you don’t know they exist, you won’t get them. You have to know to ask for them (this is something I learned after my meal, while interviewing Malter). Had I known there was a homemade Coleman’s Mustard sauce for the crab cake, I most certainly would have ordered it. The regular cocktail sauce is just too ordinary to elevate the crab cake. There’s also a house-made cocktail sauce, with fresh horseradish and other ingredients. Now why did we not know about these sauces? Condiments can make or break a dish. They can sometimes take a dish from good to wow. If you wish to visit an old, established Annapolis restaurant, Lewnes, while not extraordinary, is a fine choice. When you are spending a couple of hundred dollars on a meal, it should be memorable. They’re going to have to up their game to be a really great steakhouse. AH
Christine Fillat lives on the Magothy River and is an aficionado of Chesapeake Bay cooking and living.
