PUBLISHERS’ LETTER Richard Anuszkiewicz is a man of refined style, whether in the fashion he admires or the kitchens he designs. In preparing this feature on his design work, it has been our pleasure to discover how, in his work, the one inspires the other. This type of super attention to design is also evident in the awardwinning yacht showcased in this issue, the Xquisite X5 Catamaran. Take a moment to appreciate the elegant lines and curves of the yacht’s design. We are also pleased to present the work of Katelyn McCarthy, a young interior design professional who has recently made the transition from staff designer for someone else to business owner starting up her own firm. On the subject of design, we are grateful to landscape architect Kevin Campion for his deep commitment to preserving the Chesapeake Bay and for promoting designs that help sustain it. Please do read the second of his series of essays on the Chesapeake Bay. This extraordinary body of water is ours to value and protect. Through Annapolis Home and Looking Good magazines, we support a great number of arts, historic and community organizations in the greater Annapolis area. The Severna Park Community Center recently put on one the most beautifully designed galas we have attended locally. The SPCC is a great resource for Severna Park and we are honored to support it, along with the many other community and cultural organizations we devote our time and resources to help foster. We hope you enjoy the stories we have produced to stimulate your visual senses and to give you reading pleasure.

ROBERT’S PICKS

It’s a good idea to remind ourselves of how fortunate we are to have the Chesapeake Bay as the defining feature of Greater Annapolis and to have Washington, DC nearby, with all of its extraordinary art and cultural programs. One great event that takes place in D.C. over this summer is the Smithsonian Institution’s Folklife Festival. Each year the festival offers cultural heritage programs, with this year’s themes being “Circus Arts” and “On the Move: Migration across Generations.” Festival director Sabrina Lynn Motley says that the circus is “where the expansiveness of the imagination and the limits of the physical body meet in all sorts of really astounding ways.” In addition to the regular programming, there will be a circus performance each night. Exotic animals will not be included in the performances but they will most certainly be part of the discussions about the history and future of the circus The festival runs June 29–July 4 and July 6–9 on the National Mall, between Seventh and Twelfth streets. For more information, visit festival.si.edu.
2
The Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre is a fun way to spend an evening. The first performance, the musical comedy Sister Act, opens May 25 and runs through June 17. To see the full summer season, visit summergarden.com.
Smithsonian Folklife Festival presents “Circus Arts,” summer 2017. Photograph of St. Louis-based Circus Harmony, who will perform at this summer’s festival.
3
The Annapolis Shakespeare Company, under the leadership of the talented Sally Boyett, is a wonderful organization that advances the arts in Annapolis. This summer you must attend The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) at the outdoor courtyard at Reynolds Tavern. This type of event is what makes Annapolis a great place to live. The abridged Shakespeare takes place from May 23 through September 26, 2017. For exact dates and times, visit reynoldstavern.org.
4
The Annapolis Shakespeare Company will also present William Shakespeare’s The Tempest in the gardens of the Charles Carroll House July 7–23. For more information, visit annapolisshakespeare.org.

The first lady of Maryland, Yumi Hogan, who is featured on the cover of the April/May issue of Looking Good Magazine, is having an exhibition of her art at the Maryland Hall of the Creative Arts from May 4 through June 10. Art is a central part of her being and we are certainly excited to see her exhibition. To read the interview in which she discusses her art, see the digital version of Looking Good at lookinggoodmagazine.com.

Kitchen Design
i n s p i r a t i o n
By Tom Levine
The kitchen is laid out in three parallel bays defined by barrel vaulted ceilings and simple columns. At right: The custom panel fronting the refrigerator, with it’s geometric pattern of dark gray metal, copper and polished stainless steel, was inspired by the Chrysler Building.
Richard Anuszkiewicz, executive director of the casework division for Alt Breeding Schwarz Architects, had a golden opportunity. American Standard, a luxury kitchen and bath products firm, offered him the rare task of designing a showcase kitchen inspired by America’s “golden era,” the period in the 1920s and 1930s when Art Deco flourished. DXV, American Standard’s luxury design division, gave Anuszkiewicz almost complete carte blanche, which is rare indeed. For inspiration, he turned to New York and the Art Deco period, mining both for forms and materials as well as their sensory excess, private passions and luminous dreams. The era, with its stylized geometry and luxurious use of metals, and New York City with its skyscrapers, crosswalks and fashion runways made perfect sense for a high-functioning modern kitchen. “I love Art Deco,” says Anuszkiewicz. But he adds, “It was important to me to not do a literal take on that time period but to create “a futuristic, forward-thinking design.” When he heard a remix of Frank Sinatra’s “New York New York” stitched to Jay Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind” he found his inspiration. “Empire State of Mind” is a modern interpretation of Frank Sinatra’s theme. And, both songs are about a city where, as Anuszkiewicz says, “Anything is possible if you can dream it.” Architecture and music drive Anuszkiewicz’s design as well as his interest in luxury fashion. Pierre Balmain’s patterned metallic gown for the Vogue Met Gala is mirrored and refracted yet again on floors, finishes and cabinetry. This gown might be the perfect thing to slip on to fry up some eggs on the La Cornue range whose fifty-year-old classic French design has been given a shot of modernity. Its finish of black carbon fiber is a very 21st-century material usually reserved for fighter jets and Formula One race cars. If you were looking for a swank textile for your kitchen cabinets, you might want to consider ostrich leather used to face the butler’s pantry and inspired by the iconic Hermès Birkin purse. (You can buy one for about $50,000 ... assuming that Hermès would even sell you one.) Don’t expect to find such textiles at your local Home Depot anytime soon, like almost everything else here, they are one of a kind, a custom fabrication for this kitchen. The marble floor, a major visual element, was designed by Anuszkiewicz to be evocative of Art Deco with its pattern of contrasting custom-cut Calcutta Gold and Pietra Gray marble tiles set in a repeating triangular pattern.

On the right is a floor-to-ceiling glass case. Inside wine bottles are suspended in a random pattern on wire cables, adding a sculptural element. The Art Deco era is evoked in this floor’s design with a pattern of contrasting custom-cut Calcutta Gold and Pietra Gray marble tiles set in a repeating triangular pattern.
Pierre Balmain’s metalic patterned gown figured into this kitchen's mojo. The ebony sheen and lacquer finishes pay homage to high fashion footwear designer Christian Louboutin. Christian Louboutin Dandelion Tassel Flat loafers and a dress from the Balmain x H&M collection.
Vol. 8, No. 3 2017 31
A La Cornue range is finished in black carbon fiber, a material usually reserved for fighter jets and Formula One race cars. The drawers flanking the range have diamond-shaped grills inspired by the iconic grill of a Bentley Coupe.

ANNAPOLIS HOME
The custom countertops and backsplashes were fabricated with high tech Neolith ceramic. Macassar ebony, an exotic wood more frequently associated with high-end furniture, wraps the center island. Antique mirror adds a bit of mysterious smokiness to backsplashes. Made-to-order Swarovski crystal chandeliers and sconces add a glittering modern touch. A custom hood was fabricated in highly polished stainless steel by Raw Urth. It was designed by Anuszkiewicz to evoke a luxury automobile with its sheen and muscular shape. The drawers flanking the range are also faced with polished stainless steel. Their diamond-shaped grills were inspired by the iconic grill of a Bentley Coupe. He was also influenced by nighttime views of Manhattan’s Miesian glass box skyscrapers with their mix of illuminated and dark windows. Wine bottles are suspended in a random pattern on wire cables, adding a sculptural element. Anuszkiewicz says he is intrigued by the “play on negative space” created by the “voids within the glass volume.” The custom panel fronting the refrigerator, with it’s geometric pattern of dark gray metal, copper and polished stainless steel was inspired by the Chrysler Building, the great Art Deco skyscraper, with its ziggurat crown viewed from above. Anuszkiewicz has laid out the kitchen in three parallel bays defined by barrel vaulted ceilings and simple columns. The bays organize the space. The middle bay is the functional and visual heart of the kitchen. It is centered with an Empire-style Swarovski chandelier that has been updated with leather wrapped arms and pared down to a simple modern elegance. The range wall anchors the space with its mirrored stainless steel hood visually expanding the space. The bay to the left is a modern take on a butler’s pantry. It’s open and airy, with only the glass wine cabinet separating it from the main bay. Dinnerware is stored on open shelves backed with antique mirror, which, like the stainless finishes, open up the space visually. The shelves extend into a small niche where a narrow strip of mirror wraps around to reflect the long line of the shelves. There’s an illusion that the shelves extend forever into a mysterious and smoky void.

Anuszkiewicz’s ambitions for this kitchen were large. Designing a show kitchen is an opportunity to gain national exposure and a chance to bring fantasty to life. He has sought nothing less than to “change people’s thoughts on what a kitchen has to be” and to create a “world class kitchen [that is] bespoke, unmatched, thought provoking, forward thinking.” Anuszkiewicz joined the Annapolis-based Alt Breeding Schwartz Architects in 2013 shortly after being recognized as a “Top 30 Under 30” designer by the National Kitchen and Bath Association. The design is detailed with a discipline that belies Anuszkiewicz’s young age. New York is the city with a big heart, a city that never sleeps. This kitchen does not either. It is poised for action, for gatherings, for love; its beauty dares the spirit to walk the runway, to dress in a metallic gown. Clearly, Anuszkiewicz brings to the field an unusual vision: he is able to see the invisible line between high fashion and kitchen design and to boldly cross it. AH

Best Innovative Sailboat 2017 by robert HAywood
While guests work on their tan, the X5 soaks up the sun with solar panels on its saloon coachroof.
Gutters on the coachroof lead into rain-catching water fills. Foot switches for the electric winches at the helm station leave hands free for handling lines. An overhead showerhead built into the targa arch permits bathing on deck, convenient if sailing single handed for long periods of time.
The master suite has a lounging sofa and a king-size bed.
Ready to single-hand this beautiful boat? Monitor your gas and water tanks and wiring systems under sail? Both are possible with Xquisite X5 Catamaran. The X5 won Cruising World’s Most Innovative Sailboat 2017 Award. It also won Sail’s Best Multi-Hull over 50 Feet Award for its construction and beautifully engineered digital switching system. The South African–made Xquisite, which costs about $1.2 million, has a streamlined digital switching, or “distributed power” system. Early systems, based on automobile technology, were over-complicated and confusing to owners. Judges say that today’s system is refined and much easier to use. One has the ability to pull up the control system and all

P
aying attention to detail is the name of the game for these Stevensville homeowners who want a welcoming retreat not only for themselves but also for their grown children, grandchildren and the many friends they love to entertain throughout the year. It’s the same attention to detail they pay as co-owners of Bridges Restaurant on Kent Island, whether it’s the design of the restaurant with its Bahamian flair, the Chesapeake fusion menu or, above all, the experience of their diners. The 5,000-square-foot Chesapeake Victorian home, situated on 20 secluded acres off the Chester River, was designed by the owners and built in 1997. Throughout the years the house, not surprisingly, had become “lived in.” So when the now empty nesters made the decision to remain in the home, even with their kids “grown and flown,” they realized it was time for a face lift. The second floor of the fivebedroom, four-bath home had already been freshened up; now it was time for a first-floor redo, undertaken by Annapolis-based Carlin Brothers Construction. The renovation included gutting the main floor in order to raise the dated sunken living room and add coffered ceilings. Plenty of windows let in the natural light as well as take advantage of the waterfront views on three sides of the house, while updated cabinetry lends a sleeker, more contemporary look, and the scaled-down massive stone fireplace now provides room for custom bookshelves and a large television.
though not an architect himself, has a particular interest in home and restaurant design. The house’s previous incarnation had a more traditional design, but now sports a modern coastal look that reflects the subdued Victorian exterior, say the homeowners. Admitting that they’re weak on interior design—“We can envision the exterior, but we need help inside!”—the couple turned to Annapolis-based interior designer Katelyn McCarthy, owner of Katie McCarthy Interiors, to tie the look together. Out went the dark, heavy wood and in came white Shaker-style cabinetry, handcrafted by Hickory Creek Cabinetry in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Traditional red plaid upholstery has been replaced with furnishings in predominating shades of soft creams, blues and greens. “We wanted to ‘lighten up [the space],’” says McCarthy of her design inspiration. Taking pride of place in the new design is the quarter-sawn oak curved bar in the kitchen, the concept of Annapolis-based Design Solutions. The bar is an ideal gathering spot for both guests and hosts alike, and two of everything—from kitchen islands with quartzite countertops to sinks, ovens and dishwashers— makes entertaining a breeze. “It’s nothing to have 30 to 40 people in the kitchen at one time,” says the homeowner, who enjoys talking to his guests as he’s preparing meals. Taking into account the fact that the homeowners are grandparents with active little ones frequently running around, McCarthy chose durable indoor-outdoor fabric for the interior furnishings. The
“Ninety percent of the interior is new,” says the gentleman of the house who, An abstract oyster piece by artist Kim Hovell, an Annapolis native, brings in a natural element that reflects the home’s Eastern Shore roots.

family room was also designed with durability and comfort in mind. While the soft color palette continues throughout the first floor, McCarthy likes to “ground” the look with darker wood accents, also using wall-coverings, area rugs and pillows to add pattern, texture and color. Adding a geometric-patterned indoor/outdoor rug by Dash & Albert on top of sisal carpeting in the family room, for example, completes the look by adding a splash of coral while also making the seating area more intimate. A first floor bedroom and bath—which can be used as a master suite in later years—now provides a serene haven for guests, with walls painted in Benjamin Moore’s Iceberg Blue and with subtle diamond-patterned fabrics by Yardstick Interiors in Comus, Maryland. A seamless glass shower and modern tile in the bathroom feature the same clean lines found throughout the home. Personal touches reflect the interests of the homeowners, who are avid boaters. In the dining room, for instance, an abstract oyster piece by artist Kim Hovell, an Annapolis native, brings in a natural element that reflects the home’s Eastern Shore roots and the homeowner’s early days as a waterman in New York. With McCarthy’s help, the homeowners say they have achieved the coastal classic look they wanted (though more projects on the second story await further down the road). For now though, they’re content to enjoy their “new” home with their many family and friends. AH
The kitchen, with its massive bar, window seats and nook, can comfortably accommodate more than 30 guests.

HARVESTING THE EDGES OF
THE CHESAPEAKE BAY
HOW DID WE GET HERE?
BY KEVIN CAMPION
Modern living and environmental awareness are two sides to the same coin. They can coexist and thrive in a Chesapeake garden. Photograph by David Burroughs.
Vol. 8, No. 3 2017 63
Every waterfront garden presents an opportunity to engage with the land at a fixed point in time. Homeowners and designers have an opportunity to respond to the past and make changes that might positively influence the future of the bay.
The Chesapeake Bay is one of the most dynamic waterways in the world. It contains 11,684 miles of shoreline, more than the entire U.S. West Coast combined. Due to its location, shape and shallow depth, it contains a staggering diversity of organisms and a vastly intertwined web of life. It has drawn humans to its edges for food, water and transport for thousands of years. At the water’s edge, we humans enjoy and improve the quality of our lives, but also, sadly, degrade and destroy our natural world. We clearly see the beauty and enjoyment that the bay affords us, but we are often numb to the underlying issues that threaten its future. We love the bay for everything it offers, but it is hard to wrap our minds around the critical steps needed to preserve it. As participants in the Chesapeake Bay, either as homeowners, designers or visitors, it is our responsibility to understand its problems so that we can enjoy this watershed without sacrificing that same enjoyment for future generations. With an understanding of how the bay has developed culturally over the past 400 years, perhaps we can more successfully conserve it for the next 400 years. James Michener’s Chesapeake poetically articulates the early history of the Chesapeake Bay. Before early colonists discovered the bay,
64
ANNAPOLIS HOME
American Indians had been fishing and hunting thousands of miles of shoreline for hundreds of years. In Chesapeake, the fugitive Susquehannock Indian chief Pentaquod flees his northern tribe and travels south along the eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay. There he finds ecosystems teeming with abundant wildlife: heron, ducks, oyster, deer, rockfish and a magnificent phalanx of geese. In Michener’s words, “[T]hese powerful birds … were so numerous he had no system to count them ... . Close at hand they seemed too big to call birds; they were more like flying bear cubs loaded with edible meat.” Not only was the wildlife present in great numbers, but in great physical size as well. Largely untouched by humans, this ecosystem was in perfect balance and its wildlife prospered. By 16th- and 17th-century Maryland, more than 30,000 American Indians inhabited the coasts and uplands surrounding the bay. They practiced agriculture but not as conservationists, as we would like to believe. They slashed and burned lands in order to create what they needed to survive. It was a land of plenty, and despite their harsh treatment of the land, their small numbers made a negligible impact on the bay’s resources. According to Michener, the American Indians had “everything [their] village required—pine trees for canoes, deer to feed us in summer, geese and oysters for winter.” Michener also
makes a point of cataloging the early abundance of our iconic state crustacean: “[I]n His grace he created one thing more, to stand as a token of His eternal concern. He made the crab and hid him in our salty waters.” Life in the Chesapeake Bay began to shift in the early 17th century. European settlements, beginning with the expedition of King James I of England, began to explore the Chesapeake Bay, claiming the newly found lands for the king. The Susan Constant, Godspeed and Discovery ships arrived in 1607. Over the course of several decades, settlers began to alter the landscape for farming and other means of sustaining the burgeoning colonies. But simply surviving was not enough. Driven by the growing demands from London, colonists soon embarked on the burning and felling of hundreds of square miles of forests in order to clear land and make room for the lucrative tobacco plant. American Indians protested and waged war, but nothing could prevent the degrading and destruction of ecosystems in order to support the lively and lucrative trade with London. Over the next 300 years, the productivity of the lands around the Chesapeake Bay was maximized, and millions of acres were cleared for farming. In the 19th and 20th centuries, farmers began to plant more aggressively, often erasing the margins between field and forest and destroying forest buffers along waterways. When yields were deemed unacceptable, chemicals were applied, resulting in the poisoning of streams and rivers and the reduction in diversity and quantity of aquatic organisms to new lows. Over-farming and clearing left coastlines vulnerable to increasingly damaging storms and constant erosion. These factors systematically rearranged the coastal edges, with large acreages of land being lost to the bay every year. Since the 1700s, it is estimated that more than 60 percent of all wetlands in the Chesapeake Bay have been destroyed. Modern residential development has significantly influenced the evolution of the Chesapeake Bay edges as well. Since the end of World War II, landowners have harvested the edges of the bay at an increasingly alarming rate. It began with cottage communities, a summer extension of urban living, popping up along coastal areas. Density followed, resulting in pressures on sensitive banks, beaches and coastal edges. Shoreline protection began with light measures, but quickly developed into armored banks of stone and wood bulkheads.
Kevin Campion has lived in the Chesapeake Bay watershed his entire life. He and Bob Hruby own Campion Hruby Landscape Architects in Annapolis, Maryland. Kevin earned a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture at Penn State University, and a Master of Philosophy with a focus in landscape conservation from the Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland. He is a registered landscape architect in the state of Maryland and an active member of the American Society of Landscape Architects.
These incursions by man ultimately altered the geomorphic patterns of sand drift and wetland development, and often severed the ecological connection between land and water. Sand that once provided for beaches, spits and sandbars was no longer able to do its job naturally. “Dead shorelines,” protected by stone walls, increased in number, while unprotected adjacent areas began to erode and decline at an accelerated rate. While fragments of Michener’s idyllic Chesapeake Bay still exist, thousands of acres of forests, meadows, shorelines, marshes, inlets and rivers have been eroded and degraded by the impact of man throughout the last 400 years. How can this understanding help us conserve the Chesapeake Bay for the next 400 hundred years? I like to view the world as a continuum of experiences, from those who came before us to those who will follow in our footsteps. We are not journeying alone, and our impacts on the natural world can be both positive and negative. The past is never forgotten by nature, and we can learn from the mistakes that have happened before our time. Moreover, the future is never far away (sometimes only seconds), and we know that our actions impact the world and lives of those who will come later. In our rapidly changing coastal landscape, it is imperative that we be thoughtful participants, both individually and collectively, in the fight for the Chesapeake Bay. But how can we accomplish this? We might drive less, buy local foods, reduce our nitrogen footprint or improve our septic system. We might make our homes more energy efficient, build a rain garden or invest in local bay preservation organizations. Individually, we are called to rise up to help solve the environmental challenges of our community. In doing so, we must ask the right questions: What is the environmental baseline? How can the design of where we live affect how we live? How can we affect environmental change in a way that matters? What laws on the books, such as the recently vulnerable Chesapeake Bay Program, make sense and need protection from human tendencies? In the next edition of Annapolis Home, we will suggest actions through design and advocacy that can move the dialogue toward a healthier Chesapeake Bay. AH

Audacious & deLicious LEVEL SMALL PLATES LOUNGE
By Christine Fillat
Since its opening in 2009, this downtown Annapolis establishment has become known for its innovative small plates. Occupying a historic building on West Street, Level Small Plates Lounge has an open-air front and all the bustle of street life wafts inside. It is an urban oasis, where the people watching is just as interesting as the locally sourced food. With walls of exposed brick, the narrow dining room has an economy of space with touches of nautical decor. The bar scene is lively. This is the restaurant that had the audacity to serve snakehead fish for a special dinner at the James Beard House in New York City. With that knowledge, one expects something out of the ordinary. Just what sort of cuisine is Level? It seems to be global in its vision, with influences from the Chesapeake and the Mediterranean, one in which the vegetable plays a starring role on the menu.

The caponata is a classic Italian appetizer, rich with chunky eggplant, capers and roasted peppers, served with tandoori naan. The flavors are sensuous, with explosions of capers. My mother makes a mean caponata. This is just as good. Batons of potato gnocci are mounded with glorious, slippery whole mushrooms, atop a delectable mushroom cream, a delight for the mushroom lover. One wonders at the accompanying scoop of ricotta. It’s a color component, but, flavor- and texture-wise, it doesn’t seem to add to the dish. According to our server, the Fried Brussels Sprouts is a crowd favorite. Hot from the skillet, and well cooked, the sprouts are good with a touch of sweetness from honey. The goat cheese ranch dressing is a
Straight Up on Dining Out
bit heavier on the ranch than on the goat. On the night we visited, we chose the special, a cauliflower dish. Laden with a garlic confit, the cauliflower sits atop a green sauce that is fresh and bright, with an intricate list of ingredients. If only the rabbit were as pleasing as everything else we tried at Level. Even as it was delivered to the table, it looked dry and tired. The charred leg of rabbit was bland and tepid, the potatoes tough and curled. The green olive crema and hopeful parsley sprig weren’t enough to save this dish. This a forgotten selection, better suited for frigid weather and fresh potatoes. Pan Seared Scallops, on the other hand, is an elegant main course to be proud of. It’s pretty to look at on its bacon hollandaise sauce with a toss of fresh pea shoots on top. The scallops are perfectly cooked. They are by far the best scallops I have had in a restaurant in a long time. Caperberries come along for the ride. Bits of bacon could be a little less cooked. Where one would expect salty gems one instead finds tough nuggets. But this dish is otherwise very delicious.
A tender bread pudding for dessert comes with a layer of oozy chocolate, topped with a crunch of caramelized bananas. Yummy, and one bite leads to another. It’s hard to stop at one or two bites, because it’s really, really good. The main dining room is where it’s at. It would be nice to see the same energy carry over into the side dining room, where one tends to feel left out. It lacks the pizzazz of the main room and makes for a less satisfying evening out. The dishes at Level have a delicacy of composition. Go there for the fun of discovering the thoughtful pairings of flavors and textures on each plate, and for the joy of being out in beautiful Annapolis. AH

CONTEMPORARY DESIGN, TIMELESS COMFORT Throughout our history, Loewen has delivered an unrivaled aesthetic that both complements and inspires changes in architectural trends. The timeless comfort that radiates from our Douglas Fir and Mahogany windows and doors provides the perfect contrast of warmth to contemporary design, while the ever-changing patinas of our copper and bronze clad products offer rich, deep textures that are both contemporary and future-facing in their own right. We craft our windows and doors with aesthetic value that endures — just like the long-lasting performance of all our products. We look forward to helping you realize your vision.
