PUBLISHERS’ LETTER Welcome to the May issue of Annapolis Home! Homes are not just havens; they are vessels waiting to sail on the waves of your creativity. You may already know this! Or you may be tired of staring at your walls, imprisoned by the pandemic. You may think you have no creativity at all. No matter who you are or where you find yourself, our issue is filled with ideas, big and small. Our Rediscover Home section is packed with tips by interior designers and landscape architects. Re-Invent Your Office reveals a truly dramatic makeover as well as three smaller ones using textiles, built-in shelving, paint, and lighting fixtures. Even Robert's Picks suggests ways to tune in to extraordinary artistic performances from your back patio. In fact, as we are writing this, we are listening to a performance from the Metropolitan Opera. We will try to attend the live one this evening. Summer is at last on its way. As you leaf through the issue, don't miss the article on a contemporary pool house in the Blue Ridge Mountains and a shorter piece on an outdoor room in Davidsonville that draws inspiration from a ribbed boat hull. Enjoy our pages, and stay safe!

Robert’s Picks With cultural and sporting events canceled, many people are spending more time than ever watching Netflix, YouTube, and so forth. For those of us who love museums and live performances, online is a usually poor substitute. Yet, some cultural organizations have risen to the challenge of our times by offering events online.
1
At the top of the list is the Getty Museum, which asked people to recreate famous artworks using ordinary objects from their homes. Many creations are clever, some hilarious, and all have inspired a new way to look at and appreciate art and engage with history. Hundreds of people from all over the world have participated; I share three intriguing examples on this page. To see more, go to Instagram and type in #gettymuseumchallenge.
2
I have spent more time over the last month looking at art websites (noting, of course, the performances and exhibitions I am missing!). Yet, some of these websites are impressive and educational, and several offer performances, virtual tours, and family activities. If you have discovered a creative cultural event or you have a response to the temporary closures, please share it with me at robert@annapolishomemag.com

Among contemporary American artists, Allan McCollum is one of the most highly acclaimed. It is extremely rare for us to discover the work of an artist of his stature in a home we feature in our area. Add Accent Pillows, Art and Colorful Accessories
Interior designer Arlene Critzos suggests rearranging the furnishings and accessories in a room as a no-cost way to add a sense of ‘new’ to the space. “Changing layouts gives [the room] a new feeling,” she explains. To further enhance the effort, adding a “punctuation of color in accents like pillows or ceramic bowls” can give the room a new feel, too. And for those on a tight budget, a fresh coat of paint in a bright, fresh color can have a dramatic impact—even if it’s only on one wall. Pair Jewel Tones with Reclaimed Wood, Marble and Woven Materials Laura Fox is newly married and about to move into their first new home. “Blending two very different styles will be no easy feat,” she admits, “because he loves color and moody spaces, and I tend to like more neutrals with lots of texture and sunlight.” So her plan for marrying the two aesthetics is to pair some rich jewel tones with lots of reclaimed wood, marble, and woven materials, thus creating a fresh blended space with some bold elements that aren’t overwhelming. Replace your Front Door and Refresh Your Fireplace Rebecca Penno suggests adding more light to an interior as she did in her own family’s home recently. “We replaced the solid wood front door with a 3/4 Lite entry door to allow light to flow into the front of the house,”— an area previously light-starved. Then they completed another project in the same space. “We resurfaced our 7-foot-wide red brick fireplace with bright white wood paneling in a semi-gloss finish that reflects the natural light from the front door to the back windows,” she adds. Outdoors Pay Attention to the Edges Bob Hruby suggested paying attention to the edges of an outdoor space, saying, “[You can] extend the space by drawing one’s eye to another part of the garden.” This might be achieved by installing a water element or a custom glass sculpture similar to the ones at the far end of the path in this photo. He also recommends adding an angled gravel or stepping-stone walkway “to add visual interest and a sense of relaxation to the space… [This] can give the impression of a larger space.” Campion Hruby Landscape Architects campionhruby.com Annapolis, Maryland

Enchant with Fountain, Privacy Screens and Lighting This Capitol Hill courtyard garden reclaims a rough leftover space between townhouses. Ingeniously, the 8’ garden was envisioned as a music box. Wood screens enclose the space and, like an instrument, reflect the sounds of the fountain, explains Ryan Moody of Moody Graham Landscape Architecture. Moody designed a thirteen-foot privacy screen situated in the corner that abuts a neighbor’s deck. Its dimensions are just big enough for built-in storage benches and overhead planters. Shade tolerant perennials and hanging plants provide texture, color, and a break from the privacy screen's horizontal lines. Dimmable lights in the overhead planters, behind the panel, and above the water feature add a finishing touch for evening entertaining. Add Water and Zen Jennifer Horn suggests adding a water feature to your outdoor space, saying, “They are relatively easy features to incorporate into an existing landscape as they are typically stand-alone structures.” They can add a dynamic quality to a garden, reinforce the garden’s structure, and create a pleasant sound. The water feature above “was built as a means to re-grade an otherwise unusable space. It doubles as a retaining wall, creating a flat terrace for furnishings,” she adds. What good is a breathtaking view if you can’t see it? That’s the dilemma that faced a couple whose home overlooks the Blue Ridge Mountains in Charlottesville, Virginia. Their picturesque vista was obstructed by a pool house and cedar grove. To find a solution, they approached architecture and design firm Purple Cherry Architects. The end goal: to construct a new pool house positioned to blend seamlessly into the Virginia countryside and restore their panoramic views. The first step in the process was to remove the cedar grove and existing pool house. Cathy Purple Cherry, owner of Purple Cherry Architects (PCA), recommended building the new pool house to the left of and parallel to the existing pool, which is perpendicular to the mountain range. Aspiring to keep the design as open as possible, she planned the new structure to blend in with the wooded area and afford a full view of the mountain range.
42
ANNAPOLIS HOME
With this openness in mind, PCA designed three pods to be connected by two halls, one between each pair. The first pod contains the full bathroom, the second, the changing room, and the third, the storage room. PCA intentionally kept an open concept in the passageways between the pods, connecting the TV wall and entertainment space to the forest view. “We not only wanted to see the incredible view of the mountains but to see everything about the property, said Purple Cherry, who provided the clients with a 3D photo rendering of the completed pool house before construction started. To achieve this goal, PCA added eight feet of patio to the structure and extended the roofline, keeping it level with the tree line. To camouflage the structural steel posts that

“Ic rweaant et eadn i to ltdoworld feeling ”
anchored the roof, PCA hired a local craftsman, Edward Pelton of Pelton Metalworks, to enclose the posts in forged bronze columns, textured to resemble a pitted old casting. “I wanted it to create an old-world feeling,” said Purple Cherry. Purple Cherry worked with contractor Greer & Associates to salvage as much material as they could while building the new pool house. As they worked on the new structure, they kept the existing landscape walls and matched the new sections to the stone and height of the original structure so that it was completely seamless, said Adam Shoup, the Greer & Associates onsite project manager. Shoup said one of the biggest challenges was reusing and relocating all the pool equipment onsite. To do this, they used existing infrastructure—all the pumps, etc.—and relocated the equipment to a massive walk-out storage area behind and underneath the new pool house.
Infrared ceiling heaters and large fans ensure that the pool house can be used in cooler weather.

Recessed lighting showcases the design without taking center stage, and the large TV can be seen from the pool.
The structure is not without practicality. On the far right of the 1,500 square foot building, an electric retractable screen filters out sunlight and blocks the wind without compromising the views. Recessed lighting showcases the design without taking center stage, and the large TV can be seen from the pool. Infrared ceiling heaters and large fans ensure that the pool house can be used in all types of weather. The homeowners said their favorite thing about the new pool house is the wide-open views from almost every angle. And that was the goal of PCA—to accommodate the need for a gathering space with plenty of seating, a changing room, a large screen TV, a full bathroom, a storage area, and a mechanical equipment room—all without compromising the majestic views of the surrounding vista. The blend of materials used with their contrasting textures and styles all balance to provide an organic structure that’s functional as well as artistic. AH

The home office—which, for many of us, was once an afterthought—has recently become a necessity: a place to work and a welcome refuge from tension and distractions. Here are some ways to spruce up even small spaces with built-ins, color, and lighting. Try a few of these techniques. You may like your office so much you will linger there more often, even post-corona.
Action & Contemplation This small 14' x 10' room was a “plain Jane room, nothing special,” says interior designer Raji Radhakrishnan, founder of Raji RM Associates in Washington, D.C. Her goal for the Kip Bay Decorator Show House was to create a home office for an imaginary client: in this case, the chief curator of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. “It is a pensive, thoughtful room… I expect the curator to be somewhat intellectual,” she says. In every project she undertakes, she spends a short while inhabiting the mind of her client. In this case, the curator, though modern, had the heart of an 18th-century person. With this in mind, Radhakrishnan covered the walls and ceilings in Venetian plaster, designing a large scale classical mural to command the room. In a unique mix of eras and styles, the rare bronze pyramid coffee table by Philip LaVerne complements a bespoke Line Vautrin-inspired piece that adds sophistication to the ceiling. With its attention to detail and a nod to history, the room is both cerebral and cinematic. “Design is like directing a movie. A good director would always play every role, even the smallest role. That is exactly how I design. Every piece is a part of the puzzle I have seen in my head first.” The stage is set for action and contemplation. Cozy & Inviting A home office is a surprisingly intimate place, notes interior designer Wesley Pehlke of Simply Wesley in Annapolis. “Offices are so personal; you have to ask how a person works and what they need.” In this case, her client wanted a cozy and inviting environment. Pehlke created an airy yet neutral office enlivened by shimmering textures. Because the space was small, a heavy desk did not make sense. So Pehlke fashioned a “writing table” out of shagreen, a material composed of shark skin remnants. Rather than taking up valuable wall space, she situated the desk in the center of the room and added shimmery metallic grasscloth wall coverings. Custom built-ins hide a charging station with room for a printer and other supplies. Two comfortable swivel chairs flanked by wall sconces provide seating. The office is finished with a metallic hide rug, hand-stitched in geometric patterns. Nothing in this room is incidental. An antique brass lotus chandelier sheds more than just light. “Lotus has lots of meanings, for good luck, calm, purity, and rebirth,” says Pehlke. Intimate Dimensions, Infinite Views This rectangular waterside office has intimate dimensions yet feels expansive as it opens out to the horizon and unlimited natural views. The homeowners, says Pyramid Builder’s Dave Attenberger, wanted a room that would” inspire their creativity and imagination, allowing them to truly tune out the distractions of the everyday world. In this space, they wanted the interior and exterior to become one, removing all obstacles in creative thinking.” With this in mind, the interior design by Jenkins Baer Associates is especially tranquil and serene, and not theme or personality-driven. Rather, meditative colors and textures are inspired by the late afternoon light, forest and sea. A Vanishing Act Even before the COVID pandemic drove us all indoors, Gina Fitzsimmons’ long-time client had decided to work more from home. An executive juggling multiple large-scale projects, her office needed a makeover. “She told me she wanted this to be a happier, more uplifting space,” recalls Fitzsimmons of Annapolis-based Fitzsimmons Design Associates. “She then asked me ‘to go work your magic; it’s so dark and dreary here.’ ” Fitzsimmons performed a vanishing act, banishing clutter and all vestiges of darkness found in the desk, walls, and floors. She finished all the wall surfaces in whites and added a decorative grasscloth ceiling and built-ins. Several things make this cheerful room work. The rug is “a happy rug, with lots of floral movement in it,” says Fitzsimmons. The fretwork wallpaper below the chair rail also evokes a light feeling. The desk is angled just the way the client prefers. To the side, there is a guest chair, perfectly positioned. And, when taking a stressful phone call, her client can swivel to the picture behind her desk. “It’s just a nice photograph with a vanishing perspective… it draws you right in,” says Fitzsimmons, who proves with this design that happiness has many forms. Engineer John Snyder helped to design the diamond-shaped vaulted roof in this outdoor room, which other engineers said was “untenable.

efore constructing their outdoor living space, Lisa and Randy Pizzi had a simple wooden porch they rarely used: featureless, coverless, and made of wood that had begun to rot. Thanks to a creative collaboration that included architect, engineer, and builder, the new room that has replaced it has a soaring roof inspired by a ribbed boat hull and a diamond—and seems to float above the landscape. The Pizzis are both retired; Randy is a veteran of the US Navy. Their home in Davidsonville, Maryland, just a mile or two from the Chesapeake Bay, is where they plan to enjoy the rest of their lives. The home itself is ranch style with a warm, woody color scheme of reds, taupes, and grays, and a stone chimney that rises out of the roof. As they considered new plans for the porch, the Pizzis imagined a covered patio like an outdoor living room, with a TV, barbecue, and fireplace as focal points. “[The porch] had come to the end of its life,” says James N. Gerrety, the architect the Pizzis tasked with the renovation. Because of the home’s proximity to the Bay, and because Randy had served in the Navy, Gerrety envisioned a nautical feel and sketched an exposed roof with white beams, similar to the ribbed hull of a ship.
The ceiling is modeled on a boat hull with exposed ribs, in keeping with the home owner’s naval background.
Vol. 11, No. 3 2020 57
The diamond-shaped room is flanked by two wings covered by pergolas: one is for dining, and the other is for barbecuing. The project was constrained by the Pizzis’ swimming pool and their septic tank. To optimize space, and to keep the fireplace from blocking the pool, Gerrety rotated the entire project 45 degrees, creating a diamond-shaped room, and added two wings covered by pergolas: one for dining and the other for barbecuing.
The porch fireplace is the first thing the Pizzis see when they walk onto their new deck. Gerrety knew real stone would best complement the Pizzis’ existing chimney, so when he designed a thin stone fireplace, Carlin had to build a wooden frame and then line it with stone.
When it comes to a project with a unique, complicated shape, Gerrety says, “The key is to make it look effortless, as if there isn’t as much there—but there really is.” Gidon Carlin of Carlin Brothers Construction had to make a heavy, ribbed roof appear to float almost acrobatically. After expressing his admiration for Gerrety’s plans to “make an addition not look like an addition,” Carlin went the extra mile in the construction process, making the room feel like an organic limb of the house. Gerrety had consulted some engineers who believed that a diamond roof with elaborate detailing would be untenable. However, after adding engineer John Snyder to the team, Gerrety and Carlin eventually devised and implemented a viable roof supported by a ridge beam that projected from the house. Carlin worked alongside carpenters to ensure that the exposed rafters fit perfectly and to conceal any unsightly parts of the construction process. As a finishing touch, Carlin hand built columns on site to buttress the roof—convinced that less expensive, prefabricated columns would not do.
Carlin says the Davidsonville space has proven to be one of his most challenging projects. The timing was right, though, and the effort and expense well worth it. The old porch had come to the end of its life, while the couple was, in a sense, starting a new phase. Their diamond-shaped outdoor room, lofty and true, is an imaginative vessel for their ongoing journey. AH

GRILLED BURNT - FINGERS LAMB CHOPS
This is a classic way to grill lamb chops in Rome, where they’re called scottaditi or “burnt-fingers.” They’re traditionally made with rib chops, which make a luxe appetizer. You can use loin chops, though you’ll be missing the convenient handle for eating them. MAKES: 4 servings | TIME: 30 to 35 minutes, plus marinating time. ½ cup good quality olive oil. 2 tablespoons minced fresh rosemary 4 cloves garlic, minced Salt and pepper 4 bay leaves, torn 12 rib or 8 loin lamb chops Lemon wedges for serving 1 To make the marinade, whisk together the oil, rosemary, garlic, and some salt and pepper in a small bowl. Add the bay leaves. Put the chops in a large baking dish in a single layer or in a zippered bag. Add the marinade and turn the chops until they are entirely coated. Let marinate for up to
an hour at room temperature. Or cover and refrigerate for several hours, turning the chops at least once. 2 Start the coals or heat a gas grill for hot indirect cooking. Make sure the grates are clean. 3 Take the chops out of the marinade and let any excess drip off. Put the chops on the grill directly over the fire. Close the lid and cook, turning once, to the desired doneness: for medium-rare, 3 to 4 minutes per side for loin chops and about 2 minutes per side for rib chops. Prevent over-charring by moving them back and forth between the hot and cool sides of the grill. 4 Transfer the chops to a platter and serve with grilled lemon wedges. The High-Heeled Gardener
basil Bliss
BY KYMBERLY TAYLOR
The first thing my mom inspects when visiting my garden is the basil. Bypassing my perfect pineapple sage, she goes straight to it, assessing its height and width, and commenting on its genus, location, and how well it is doing. When it’s supple and almost knee-high, her eyes take on a strange Sicilian gleam. I know that look—she will drive off shortly with a few bunches for her dinner. In case you’re wondering, she grows her own beautiful basil, but we each plant different kinds, which makes it fun to share. She taught me to cherish this herb while it lasts. It thrives on heat and sun, so when it is gone, that’s a sure sign that summer is over. A few tips: Pick a few leaves off each plant, rather than cutting off a whole stem. Pick often, so it doesn’t flower or bolt. If it does, the sweetness will vanish, and it will taste bitter. I recommend Sweet Basil, Genovese, Thai Sweet Basil, and Purple Basil. In my small

garden, I plant at least six or seven plants for a nice yield. I recently bought Mexican basil and love its compact form and citrus-green glow. I am not sure it is really growing yet, so I will keep you posted. Mix basil into omelets, smoothies, flavor your olive oil with it, and eat it raw for its antioxident vitamins. Basil is an excellent source of vitamin K and manganese, a very good source of copper, vitamin A (in the form of carotenoids such as beta-carotene), and vitamin C, and a good source of calcium, iron, folate, magnesium, and omega-3 fatty acids. blueberry basil lemonade INGREDIENTS: • 1/4 cup of blueberries • Two lemons, juiced • 5 leaves of fresh basil • 2 tbsp. simple syrup; add more for desired sweetness (To make syrup: Mix 1/2 cup of sugar with 1/2 cup of water and bring to a boil on the stove to dissolve the sugar. Chill.) • Sparkling or soda water for topping • Optional: add vodka to the mix *This recipe makes one drink, but you can increase all of the ingredients to make a pitcher full. DIRECTIONS: Smash blueberries, lemon juice, simple syrup, and basil leaves in the bottom of a glass. Add crushed ice. Top with sparkling water and stir. Garnish with blueberries, lemon wedges, and a fresh basil leaf. Serve immediately. Recipe and photo by Leigh Ann Chatagnier, author of the blog My Diary of Us. Starlings BY TEMPLE CONE
Late rain over the mountains. I run the long road past the whitewashed church near my house, the grounds an acre of man-high corn, a crop uncropped all summer, gold paling to straw. A shriek of starlings curls above the field, the way water closes after a stone. Hundreds. A thousand. From the ground, the starlings resemble the swallows that flew south months ago. But the starlings are not swallows. They swarm empty trees at night, leaves culled out of darkness, and their song fills the roads like the ring of guns in winter, an angry report of metal in the cold, which drops off, quiet. Even crows fear them. A swallow’s wings are velvet, not silk, and catch the rough fingers that smooth them. I shot a swallow once, when I was a boy, then cupped its body in my hands. Now, while starlings wheel overhead, twilight soft sifts to the ground, curling around me the way the shadowy starlings canopy the trees. The crown of the swallow is blue. Not the blue of rain-capped mountains, nor of gunmetal in full light. The swallow’s crown is sapphire, deep as empty sky. Quickening now, I pass an oak summer squalls tore down. Its leaves have turned color with the other trees, as if they didn’t care about the storm, and covered the oak in a quilt of red and brown, the color of dried blood, of rust, of the down of the swallow’s throat. O child, what did you think the shadows would say? The rains will still fall. The starlings will still come at night, and sing beneath your window. Child, there are words written on the heart of things that never come to mastery, words indelible as the call of birds in winter. And it is the heart that stutters these words. The heart stutters to speak them. 72
