Advertising plays a powerful role in modern culture. It defines our visual culture, shapes ideas about fashion, design, and gender and even influences peoples’ habits of living. The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History has a special show that shows how advertisers from the 1920s to the 1960s used representations of medical professionals to make the case that smoking was healthy. For more information about this exhibition and many other Smithsonian exhibitions this summer, visit si.edu.

The 2019 Maryland Lavender Festival is June 15-16 at the Springfiled Manor Winery-Distillery-Brewery. Along with the picturesque views, you can enjoy live music, handcrafted spirits and educational seminars. You can also taste the lavender gin and lavender vodka. Learn more at springfieldmanor.com.

ANNAPOLIS HOME

MARSHLAND MODERNITY By Renee Houston Zemanski Photography by Julia Heine A marsh location isn’t usually one’s first thought when envisioning a waterfront home. However, the panorama of tall, moving grasses and boundless still water provides a tranquil ambiance like no other. So, when it came time for builder Patty McDaniel to construct her dream home, a marsh location proved perfect. “I dreamt for decades about having a house on the water,” said the founder and owner of Rehoboth Beach-based Boardwalk Builders. “We were doing a job for one of my clients on this street near my office and I was always driving by this ‘For Sale’ sign on this postage size piece of land.” McDaniel finally brought her architect friend, Mark McInturff, of Bethesdabased McInturff Architects, to see the lot. After discussions on how to build on such a small lot while taking advantage of the

views, McDaniel bought it. The two have collaborated on many homes, but this one was special. It was McDaniel’s forever home. Since it had to follow the environmental boundaries, the house was built as a broad L shape, but not a 90-degree angle, explained McInturff. There are two wings in the approximately 3,400 square foot home— downstairs, the living, dining, kitchen wing and the master bedroom and ensuite wing. Upstairs, there are two bedrooms and a spacious living space that separates them. In between the wings sits an awe-inspiring, twostory screened porch. “I liken it to opening up a book where you have two sides that splay out and the screen porch is like the pages in the book. No angle in the house is a direct 90-degree angle”, McInturff said.

Vol. 10, No. 3 2019 33

The little balconies provide outdoor space on this site that is, except for out front, literally on the water.

36

ANNAPOLIS HOME

The contemporary home’s exterior boasts treated cedar siding, reminiscent of its beach location. The home, which is supported on treated wood pilings, has a retaining wall that retains the dirt and allows the lower floor to be higher than the flood plain. While purposeful, the wall also creates a unified look. Once inside, walls of windows and glass doors draw the eye directly to the serene vista of the marsh. “The view changes all the time,” said McDaniel. “All you see is water,” added McInturff. “It’s unbelievably beautiful. You’ve got these grasses, tall and always moving, and there’s the long view out to the bay. The more time I spent there, the more I thought, ‘this is one of the most beautiful spots I ever worked on.’” The 440-square-foot screened porch, McDaniel’s favorite room, takes full advantage of the view. All the geometry of the porch radiates from a two-story galvanized steel column. Gazing upward, a myriad of angles and geometric shapes are created out of steel beams, wood, cedar and glass skylights. Extending out into the porch are little balconies from each of the second floor bedrooms. Another small balcony jets out over the marsh. “There’s no outdoor space on this site, except out front, so it was important for me to include that little balcony”, said McInturff. “It’s literally on the water. You feel like you’re on a boat because there’s no land between you and the marsh.” The streamlined kitchen has built in shelves behind the stove, instead of a traditional backsplash. Brushed stainless steel accordion shelves mirror the rest of the home's palette.

Vol. 10, No. 3 2019 37

The metal grid becomes a railing; the metal bars between the risers create safety and are part of the home’s overall artistic design.

Metal crossbars ensure the broad glass windows are structurally sound during high winds and the coastal storm season.

This seafaring theme is incorporated throughout by the choice of materials, nautical railings and lighting. The contemporary home doesn’t lack the warmth of a more traditional home precisely because of how the materials are used. McInturff explained that ordinarily, the steel frame and beams would be hidden from view, but they decided to keep the materials in their original state to create continuity between the home’s exterior and interior and add warmth. “There’s an authenticity to this house—all of the materials are used in their natural states,” he said. “It makes sense since the house is immersed in nature.” All the wood used in the home is Douglas Fir. The floor is cork and reflects the color of the dark water in the marsh, said McInturff. “It’s almost like you’re on the water, on the water.” The interior design throughout is sleek with modern, clean interconnecting lines. “A lot of what makes the house beautiful is the way details line up with other details—the alignment of one material to the next,” said McDaniel. The kitchen offers up a simple elegance with its Silestone countertops and handcrafted wood cabinets. In place of a backsplash behind the stove, shelves were incorporated for extra storage and three brushed stainless, accordion doors hide the contents while continuing the streamlined look and color palette of the space. McDaniel and McInturff designed the dining table and had it crafted locally from reclaimed Douglas Fir, giving McDaniel the character and warmth that she wanted.

Vol. 10, No. 3 2019 39

Materials, including wooden ceiling, steel beams and supports, are left unapologetically stark, to complement raw natural surroundings.

40

ANNAPOLIS HOME

Vol. 10, No. 3 2019 41

The screened in porch with soaring ceiling and angles is intersected by steel beams; they do not detract and almost become invisible once one is accustomed to them.

While the floor to ceiling windows and doors offer a dramatic backdrop of the marsh in every room, they still need to be structurally stable and able to withstand coastal winds. To achieve that goal, McInturff incorporated metal crossbars or tension ties that expand across some of the larger windows. They serve as braces between the steel columns, eliminating any motion during high winds or settlement while adding to the home’s nautical character. The window tension ties aren’t the only instance when aesthetics and practicality are intermingled in the home. The metal grid between the staircases serves as both a safety barrier as well as a design element. “The grid is effectively the railing. It’s a whimsical way to deal with safety,” said McInturff, adding that the small metal rod beneath each open riser step also provides added safety. “Everything you see is holding it together. It’s a work of art.” Indeed, the entire home is a splendid retreat and at the end of a long day, McDaniel savors the tranquility and the view she can come home to. She describes her marsh home as “a pinch myself every day kind of awesome.” AH

In a charm city office

Guests step into this airy office, with original artwork on the wall and sculpture on the reception desk by plastic surgeon Emily Clarke-Pearson. By Kymberly Taylor | PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY LEWIS, JR.

Doctor Emily Clarke-Pearson, founder of Charm City Plastic Surgery, started her new practice in Fells Point, Baltimore last May with an office composed of nothing more than exposed brick, a concrete floor, and a splendid view of Fells Point. With the assistance of interior designer Katalin Farnady, she now has a space infused with natural light, art, and sculptural forms. Dr. Clarke-Pearson, who attended Brown University and trained as an artist before studying medicine at Harvard and Johns Hopkins Universities, knew she wanted a space like no other. Farnady welcomed the chance to break out and do something fresh. The effortless design scheme is more like a spa-infused sanctuary, rather than a sterile doctor’s office with ho-hum walls and stern chairs. It is a space designed purposely to dispel anxieties, which many people may have when visiting a plastic surgeon especially for the first time, notes Dr. Clarke-Pearson. “People come to a plastic surgeon office to talk about things they are sensitive about, vulnerable about, awkward about…there can be lots of apprehension going in, a lot of unknowns especially for a new patient,” she says. Vol. 10, No. 3 2019 47

ART IN OFFICE

The space itself is a story, expressing a vigorous intelligence and abstract beauty, in its physical architecture, art, and interior design.

Mindful spaces like this don’t just happen. A designer for many years who works nationally, Farnady knows this well. “Whether working in a public or private space, you really should tell a story; here I saw Old Baltimore and a spunky modern woman who is very artistic,” she explains. She notes that the curving counter separating the waiting room and reception area is “a different form that looks like a piece of art.” There is more formal play: a light fixture composed of three low-hanging stainless steel pipes is both industrial and lyrical, as if playing a jazz tune in mid-air. It adds a touch of old Fells Point Harbor, casts a diffused light and cleverly identifies the receptionist’s work zone.

hand-carved sculpture “Embrace” on the front desk. Farnady hired Artstar Custom Paintworks to transform two procedure rooms by meticulously hand painting pop-art faces on the walls, reminiscent of something Farnady saw in Berlin during her travels. Artstar also hand painted the ombré wall and logo behind the reception desk in hues that recall a wharf suddenly sunlit following a storm. There are environments that deplete and those that replenish. It is a truly restful feeling, even reparative, to visit Dr. Clarke-Pearson, and for a short while during one’s hectic day, and especially in a surgeon’s office, relax and receive. AH

With a holistic atmosphere in mind, it was natural to hang “Gardenscape”, a mixed-media painting by Dr. Clarke-Pearson, right near the front door, to welcome visitors, and to display her

GETAWAY BECOMES HOME BY CAROL SORGEN PHOTOGRAPHY BY GWIN HUNT

When a family from Northern Virginia bought a weekend home in 2017 in scenic Prospect Bay on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, they realized it was becoming increasingly difficult to “get away from their getaway.” So, in 2018, they decided to pull up stakes and make their vacation home permanent. “Every time we crossed the Bay Bridge we felt light and happy,” the wife says. “We finally decided to move in for good last year.” Besides the 3,000+ square foot expansive waterfront home, the family likes the amenities (country club, clubhouse, programs, and activities) as well as the sense of community. “We like knowing our neighbors,” says the homeowner. The family, who also once owned a home in Ocean City, wanted their Eastern Shore residence to have a different feel from their suburban Virginia residence; they wanted a waterfront vibe, but without the beachy cliché.

ideal backdrop for the warmer blues, teals, and oranges that reflect the beauty of a Chesapeake Bay sunset.

“She got that we wanted to capture the warmth of the setting without detracting from the views,” says the homeowner. “There’s such a sense of openness and space, unlike the darkness of our Virginia home.”

The only furniture the family brought with them was a rustic hand-hewn dark wood dining table, offset by antiqued blue chairs. A great room sectional serves as entertainmentcentral for the family, who frequently have family and friends over.

The home was pretty much move-in ready, says Fitzsimmons. Even the paint colors, newly refreshed by the previous owners, met with the approval of both Fitzsimmons and the homeowners. The soft yellow walls serve as an

Fitzsimmons paid such attention to detail that on moving day she felt “as if I were moving into the house myself.” It was perfect, even down to how the books in the bookcases were arranged, says the homeowner, adding, “I couldn’t have done it better myself.” Fitzsimmons took her design cues from the couple who wanted a home that was comfortable and casual. “There’s not any area in the home that’s really formal,” says the designer. “You don’t have to be afraid to sit anywhere.” While the husband of the family prefers a more traditional design, Fitzsimmons modernized the look by combining such features as a dark wood sleigh bed with cream-colored night tables. In a similar vein, the original oil painting that hangs over the bed is counterbalanced by a series of four abstract paintings and hand-blown glass lights left by the previous owners.

The master suite has a dark sleigh bed, which gives the home a sense of permanence and contrasts dramatically with lighter hues.

While one guest bedroom sports a more nautical look, with brighter colors, antique oars, and coiled rope lines, the overall design of the house is more subtly inspired by the waterfront, with wood finishes and casual textures. “We brought in the colors of the regional landscape but toned them down to fit in with what’s going on out the windows,” Fitzsimmons explains. Both Fitzsimmons and the homeowners, couldn’t be happier, agreeing that they pulled off just what they set out to do...create a “getaway” home they never have to leave. AH

HISTORIC

FARMHOUSE GETS A MODERN UPDATE Washington D.C. family builds an Eastern Shore Getaway By Elizabeth Heubeck | Photography by Geoffrey Hogdgon From the top of its long and winding gravel driveway, this historic farmhouse on Long Creek on the Eastern Shore appears every bit as traditional as when it was built in the early 1700s. But up close, the impression quickly changes. Recent renovations and additions to the home, both dramatic and thoughtful, have created the perfect marriage of historic and modern. “I try to be incredibly respectful of a home’s historic fabric,” says Cathy Purple Cherry, whose firm, Purple Cherry Architects, took on the extensive renovation project from start to finish. Pilli Custom Homes did the remodel, bringing their attention to the construction.

This room is original to the home and was most likely a parlour. It contains, front and center, one of five working fire places that, in the 1700s, heated the entire home.

Old brick is joined by new, carefully chosen for its weathered qualities.

Vol. 10, No. 3 2019 61

The new kitchen, with its brick wall, colossal range, and sunny, airy interior, is the home’s bustling center when the family occupies the home on weekends and during vacations. Post-renovation, the first level’s new open, awe-inspiring kitchen and adjacent living room have become the home’s cheery focal point. The airy kitchen, with its exposed brick wall, soaring ceilings, and handsome wooden beams, flows directly into the newly built living room, whose understated cream and white color scheme complements the light-filled space, courtesy of expansive windows. Both the kitchen and living room afford a picture-perfect view of the home’s generous yard, which faces the creek. The scenery is both captivating and relaxing, tall grasses circle the home and sway gently with the wind. It serves as a perfect contrast to the busy lives that the homeowners lead in Washington D.C. The generous 40-foot-long screened-in porch along the back of the home provides a front-row view of the Long Creek. Gazing at the serene creek need not be a solo affair here, as the spacious addition allows for comfortably entertaining up to 10 people. “Very rarely do you see porches of this scale,” Cherry observes. The home’s other functional additions are designed for family life and entertaining. The back entrance, adjacent to the gravel driveway that easily accommodates four large cars, leads directly to a spacious new mudroom, with plenty of storage compartments. From there, just off the hallway leading to the kitchen, other admirable features include an alcove with a generous built-in dog bath, perfect after a romp in the creek; a new bathroom; a washer/dryer; and, tucked right beside the kitchen, a wine pantry, complete with a full-sized refrigerator. 62

ANNAPOLIS HOME

The great room, part of the new addition, has wooden beams that add a touch of the old to the new. The new porch runs the length of the original home and seats ten people. It probably would not have existed, at least in these proportions, in the 18th century.

Vol. 10, No. 3 2019 63

Thoroughly modern amenities include a dog bathing area, laundry room, and mudroom with seating and storage.

Step into the original parlor and you immediately time travel back a few centuries, where small, intimate spaces were once the norm. “We were tiny people,” says Cherry, noting the low ceilings, narrow hallways, and diminutive rooms which were characteristic of homes of the past. The owners, wanting to maintain the integrity of the historical home, knew that Cherry would respect their choice to do so. Subsequently, only minimal changes were made to the original structure. Two new bathrooms, one in the master bedroom and one in the second floor hallway, were added. While many modern-day house hunters demand copious storage space, the bedrooms in this historic home were not retrofitted with additional closets or shelves.

What the rooms of the original home lack in modern amenities they make up for in a charming nod to the past. Working fireplaces adorn five of the home’s rooms. In the small room off the kitchen that likely once served as the main parlor, a piano conjures up images of guests gathering around it in the evening as a primary form of entertainment. The beauty of this rennovation is that the home can be enjoyed in both its original and modern iterations. That may mean lighting a toasty fire on a chilly evening and enjoying the intimacy of its original parlor rooms, or grabbing a favorite bottle of wine from the pantry’s refrigerator and sharing it with several guests on the roomy screened-in porch. BREAKING RULES

with Container Gardening

BY ISABELLA HAYWOOD

Many preconceived notions exist about how container gardens should look and behave. Traditional advice dictates that container gardens should contain a thriller, a spiller, and a filler, but, as we learned from Fran Scully, special projects manager and historian at Ladew Topiary Gardens, there are many exciting ways to break the rules. In designing her dramatic container gardens, Scully is playful and daring, choosing bold ferns that play the roles of both thrillers and spillers, and planting even water plants like Papyrus in containers.

Here are her top tips for creating lush and lasting container gardens: Think Texture!

When designing your container garden, Scully advises that you think “in shapes and forms,” play with contrasts, and choose plants that “play well together.” She admires the bold leaves of Hosta and how they can serve as a backdrop to accentuate the small flowers of Heuchera, as well as accenting with wispy plants such as Carex or Hakonechloa.

Focus on Foliage

Foliage will keep your pots looking lush throughout the seasons and can add serious drama, whereas flowers only last for a short 68

ANNAPOLIS HOME

time. The dimensions of the leaves add interest: triangular leaves can layer with ruffled ones whiles thinner lances and fountain shapes shoot out behind them. Arching forms such as Salvia, Soloman’s Seal intersect with the others creating dazzling patterns.

Perennials are Your Friends

Perennials are dependable, fun to watch evolve over the years, and do not need as much care. Annuals can be used as seasonal fillers to spice things up. Scully recommends fertilizing your pots every two weeks if they contain mainly annuals and every month if they contain mostly perennials.

Keep Upkeep Simple

Stick with reliable plants that do not require too much care and group plants that like the same soil conditions and the same amount of sun together. However, do not be afraid to experiment! Scully highlights that container gardens expand what is typically possible; shade plants can sometimes tolerate a sunny spot if they are in containers with other sun plants.

Let it Drain!

The first step to set yourself up for successful watering is to choose the right pot. Scully recommends clay or ceramic pots that have great holes for drainage. Picking a soil mix that corresponds to your plants plays an important role as well: succulents should be potted using a mix containing sand, and larger shrubs should be potted in heavier soil. Also, be sure to water regularly. Most plants like to dry out between watering, but it is important to not let them dry out too much and enter a state of “permanent wilt”. AH

Straight Up on Dining Out

FLAMANT THE ELEMENT OF SURPRISE BY CHRISTINE FILLAT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PETER MILES

Since Flamant came onto the Annapolis dining scene in 2017, it has been a foodie mainstay. With a thoughtful menu from Chef Frederik De Pue, the restaurant’s popularity is well known throughout the mid-Atlantic region. The menu changes seasonally and the selections are limited (there are just 16 items on the menu). Not only is the food ambitious, the restaurant itself is a very comfortable place to spend some time. This is De Pue’s baby. With architectural design by David Mills of The Drawing Board, this West Annapolis cottage (which, in a previous life, was children’s clothing store, The Giant Peach) features a central kitchen with a live action window onto the chef ’s activity. A dining room addition, opened in June of 2018, adds needed table space and elbow room for patrons. A fireplace warms the bright room, with its high ceilings and pared down Northern European decor. There’s a lot of pride here. Every detail is carefully considered, from the tile on the floor to the color of the rooms and the artwork on the walls. De Pue makes his own vinegars, dehydrates herbs, and pickles fruits and vegetables. These personal touches show De Pue’s devotion to exquisite flavor and impeccible design. A visit to Flamant is similar to detecting a mystery story. What you’re eating is not always explained in the menu. For someone who eats everything, this is not a problem. At Flamant, the surprise element is alive and well.

garlicy. The fries are warm, but we would have prefered them hot out of the frier. The PEI Mussels are a bit of a disappointment. Considering mussels with fries are a popular dish in De Pue’s native Brussels, these bivalves are underwhelming. The mussels themselves are small. They come to the table with a skimpy (but tasty) serving of a white wine mustard jus and leek sauce. The mussels and fries are warm. If only they were hot! And with a bit more sauce. Then they would be perfect. Had we had room for dessert, we would have ordered the Caramelized Banana Donut to have with our pot of French Press Coffee. If only lunch were longer. The fireplace and cozy blankets beckon. Flamant is the best kind of restaurant for Annapolis. The food is very good, with unexpected surprises. We have had many superb meals here. Frederik De Pue has an earnest joy for a beautiful plate of food. A lot of love goes into this place. AH Christine Fillat lives on the Magothy River and is an aficionado of Chesapeake Bay cooking and living.

Take for example the lowly chicken liver. De Pue makes a Chicken Liver Tartine that is creamy and delicious. It is very rich, served up with toast sticks, greens, and house-pickled figs. One imagines coming here and having the tartine and a glass of some lovely wine and calling it a day. It is a perfect thing. The Frisée Salad, Neuski Bacon is quite beautiful to look at, with its curly greens, sunny egg, and bacon. But what are the fried balls on the salad? Crispy fried on the outside, creamy on the inside, with a rich delicate flavor. “What could it be,” we ask to the server. He doesn’t know. Perhaps it is brie, he offers. He says he calls them hush puppies. They do resemble hush puppies, but the flavor is completely different. A quick trip back to the kitchen, he returns with the information that the balls are called Panisse and are made of ground cauliflower, filled with heavy cream, baked and then deep fried. A very curious and delicious concoction. We like the combination of tangy greens, delicate egg, salty bacon and cauliflower cream balls. The flavor combinations and textures are winning, and there is the surprise element of a mystery ingredient. We are in a creative chef ’s milieu. The Steak with Belgian Fries is a generous, perfectly grilled medium rare hunk of a hangar steak served with spinach, fries, and a garlic butter sauce for dipping. There is house-made catsup, mustard and green sauce made with gin. The meat is very good. The spinach is
