PUBLISHERS’ LETTER Architecture shapes our lives and how we interact with each other far more than most of us realize. With this in mind, it is especially wonderful to bring you an issue that spotlights what is going on in our region. In our three feature stories and Leading Architects section, you will meet 11 architects shaping the homes, landscapes and streets of our city and region. We also bring you some of the custom builders who gave three-dimensional form to their ideas. In the feature stories, you will see different approaches. In our first feature, the architect has created a seemingly simple, but exquisite wooded get-away that represents her specific way of thinking about architecture and nature. In contrast to the wild expanse of forest and marsh this architect had to work with, the architect of our cover story designed a home on a very tight point of land that would take full advantage of expansive Bay views. The basement remodel was also demanding because the architects’ and builders’ goal was to transform the subterranean space so that it doesn’t feel like a basement at all. Finally, don’t miss Peggy Guggenheim’s home and museum in Venice. This fabulous woman had an epic appetite for art and life and reminds us that art changes you as you behold it. From all of us at Annapolis Home, we wish you the happiest of holidays. Enjoy,

T
There is a simple beauty to a country farm, a calmness to its weathered sheds, coops and barns. Architect Olvia Demetriou FAIA employed these iconic quiet forms when designing a get-away for clients who sought the solace of solitude, a place to exchange cell phones and flat screens for fox, deer and eagles. Initially, Chris Niemczewski and Elise Hoffmann wanted a romantic one-bedroom weekend home overlooking their rural property on the Chesapeake Bay. However, their vision expanded and they ended up wanting a home large enough for their four grown children and friends to visit. One of the challenges was to design a large space with the low maintenance, low profile, and intimacy of a small one, explains Demetriou of the Washington D.C.-based HapstakDemetriou+. Drawing on local materials and vernacular idioms, Demetriou designed one long barn-like structure with a guest house and master suite on each end. These two separate entities function independently of each other but are joined in the middle by a long porch. The exterior and interior are composed of many natural materials. A delicate range
of intervening grays, blues, and browns allow this home to defer to and in this way illuminate the surrounding forest and marshlands or, in Demetriou’s words “set the stage for nature rather than the other way around.” “Instead of using conventional ornamentation strategies including finishes, trim, crown moldings, etc., we drew on the appeal of natural woods and materials, relying on a repeating rhythm of trusses marching through space, to evoke the construction of a boat, or a barn,” recalls Demetriou. She notes that much of the design was inspired by the beauty of the trusses supporting the pitched roof. Thomas D. Albright (T.D.), director of business development for Winchester Construction Company knows those trusses well. He believes they are one of the home’s most stunning features as well as challenging to work around. What you don’t see may be just as impressive as what you do see. They mask a complex system composed of HVAC, electrical wiring, plumbing and foam insulation, which are usually hidden conveniently in an attic.

What also stood out on this job, he says, was the reliance on natural materials throughout the house, which create a more durable home that is easier to maintain. In this case, what you see becomes very important. “It is mainly composed of wood, stone, glass. There is a very limited amount of drywall, and limited painted surfaces.” “Everything is flushed out so there is not room for error. This pushed our craftsmen to do the best that they can, which is what we like to do. There are minimal overhangs and tight tolerances,” he says. T.D. calls attention to built-in benches lining the porch that connects the two separate living quarters and, on its own, is a special interstitial space encouraging conversation, meditation, even wonder. “Deer fox eagles are everywhere. There are built-in heaters so you can truly enjoy the home. It’s a place where you can open up all the doors…it allows you to have a nice fluid space.” Fluidity was important to Demetriou and her clients. A mobile fluidity is fostered by the floor plan as well as a personal fluidity—the spaces are receptive to shifting moods. “It was important to find a way to balance privacy with hospitality—to create spaces where people can interact when they wish to, yet also be able to enjoy the intimacy that a private space affords,” says Demetriou. One of the best things about this house is its ability to embrace the private and social sides of one’s self, the extrovert and introvert and everything in between. With versatility in mind, Demetriou

The only adornment needed in the master bedroom is nature. The home has very little drywall or painted surfaces which made it challenging to construct.
Vessel sinks in powder room and master bath are free of carvings, color, or ornamentation.
The window-walls and skylights on the porch reveal the sun’s diurnal rhythms. designed mini gazing zones, “places to pause” where one could stop for a moment or an hour to simply read, have a private conversation or soak in nature. Demetriou thinks often about how design affects human interaction and vice versa. “It is important to consider how spaces support those primal ways in which people want to relate to each other and to space. Today, we want to live in great rooms; we don't want to be compartmentalized.”
It is certainly intentional, then, that the kitchen and hearth bookend the great room and explains Demetriou “are the private and also gravitational centers of the home.” They are living spaces of “emotional and physical sustenance.” And it is true. With its air of self-reliance, its dusk-gray steel roof and concrete foundations, this home seems to demand less of you than other equally beautiful but more ornate residences. Yet, it is welcoming, perhaps perfect for overworked executives or the wanderer who is not lost. AH

What distinguishes Alt Breeding Schwarz Architects from a typical architectural practice are the value-adding components the firm integrates into every residential or commercial project. Not only does the ABS team consistently produce award-winning residential and commercial buildings, but it also integrates into those projects a full spectrum of interior design services including cutting-edge kitchens, lighting, entertainment systems, and elegant, custom architectural casework. The design team, led by founding partner Scarlett Breeding, not only includes veterans Jay Schwarz, John Alt, and a staff of eight talented support architects and interior designers, but also Richard Anuszkiewicz, recently named one of the top 50 kitchen and casework innovators in the U.S. “This is a team that knows its stuff, knows how to get things done, how to work with the regulatory bureaucracy, how to solve problems, how to listen to a client’s needs and dreams, and how to provide relentless attention to customer service and satisfaction,” says Ms. Breeding. “We make every project simply the best it can be.”

Tradition. Redefined. When Severna Park’s community of Nantucket On the Severn was just a hole in the ground, Steve Terhune was the architect chosen to exclusively design the homes. The community stands out as one the most desirable neighborhoods in the Annapolis area.
Terhune is very proud of his focus on cost-effectiveness. “Even my wealthiest clients are wealthy because they invest money wisely.” He helps them keep a handle on costs through his understanding of construction and project management.
Terhune’s work in Maryland, and as far afield as Florida and Arizona, has a unique quality to it. He “seeks high impact design statements that are tailored to my client’s wants and needs. Being unoriginal is everything I stand against, but my clients and I also want a cozy home that has important elements of tradition.”
“At every point in our project our confidence in Steve grew as we saw him develop our needs into a house that not only fits our lifestyle, but is also tailored to our waterfront site beautifully.” -Chris and Wendy U., Annapolis
Starting in the early 1990’s, Steve was a pioneer in utilizing the most advanced 3-D computer imaging techniques. This technology allows him to study design alternatives, and ultimately allow clients to “walkthru” their project before it is built.
“Steve is an amazing architect! Seeing is believing and our house is evidence of his talents and attention to detail. Fred Sieracki is an award-winning architect, practicing in Annapolis for over 20 years. He specializes in designing beautiful spaces that are built to be sustainable and highly energy-efficient. For this waterfront project, the owners wanted to replace an outdated 1950s rancher with a home that lent itself to frequent entertaining and maximized the beautiful water views. Teaming with Bayview Builders, Sieracki created exactly that. One wing of the 4,500-square-foot home is a master suite; the other houses four en-suite guest rooms. Its center is a great room with a spacious kitchen, large stone fireplace and two-story windows overlooking the pool and creek beyond.

We seek to embody these found potentials abstractly in our work, making the result inextricable. Rooted. Timeless.

ANNAPOLIS HOME
SANCTUM ON THE POINT
By Jessica Shelton | Photography by David Burroughs
Usually, a move involves a change of scenery: new neighbors, landmarks, ways of being. But after 24 years in the Annapolis Roads Community, Rod and Robin Jabin didn’t want to leave their beloved street. The family business, Bert Jabin Yacht Yard, was just a short drive away and Lyon Drive, where they had raised their two children, had so much history. So when a house five lots down hit the market, they acted quickly, enlisting Purple Cherry Architects to design their waterfront dream. “We had driven around and seen Cathy Purple Cherry’s houses, and I loved the staircases,” Robin said. “That’s always been one of my favorite things.” Set on a slim peninsula overlooking the Severn River and Heron Lake, the plot offered the architect little margin. To avoid lengthy public hearings and maximize the incredible views, Purple Cherry adopted a linear plan that— inconceivably—tucked 6,500 square feet of living space into an area just one-room deep. Her other challenge was mitigating the property’s severe grade, which placed the front door at basement level.

want the “You entrance to fall away into the landscape,
but also to be elegant,” Purple Cherry explained. A ground-level entry wouldn’t do the gabled roof justice. So Purple Cherry added a second-floor portico 9-feet up, with a wrought iron railing and stonework to eliminate any hint of “beach house.” On the interiors, Lisa Publicover took the lead, with Joni Zimmerman in charge of the open kitchen. “It was a true collaboration,” Publicover said. “Robin had definite ideas; she knew all the fabric lines and furniture.” And they shared a love of color—deep blues and greens that dress every pillow, chair and drapery. The screened porch was the only exception to their scheme. There, the duo opted for neutral tones, so the scenery could speak for itself. With the warmth of a wood fire, regular wildlife sightings and the moon’s reflections on the water, it’s become the Jabins’ refuge. “We’ve never spent so much time outside,” Robin said.

Whimsical wallpaper and funky sconces, from Jones Lighting in Baltimore add pizazz to this stately home.
The home follows the contours of its narrow waterfront lot. But even inside, nature is kept close: bare, outsize windows turn one’s gaze to the horizon, and rooms transition without seam, mirroring the limitless blue. “I love the wow that happens when you open the door,” Purple Cherry said. Dining room flows to kitchen, to great room, with the water always beckoning. Design-wise, another favorite is the powder room, with its whimsical wallpaper and funky sconces, from Jones Lighting in Baltimore. “My husband accuses me of being an old lady,” Robin said—owing to a certain Majolica collection in the kitchen. “But the powder room is proof that I’m not!” And so is the the tenant living in the baseboard. “Have you seen the mouse?” Publicover asks, in the middle of the tour. Of course, she’s not referring to a living pest. The mouse was a special idea Zimmerman came up with, a signature piece by kitchen cabinet maker Woodland Furniture. “I was scared … I didn’t know what my husband was going to say,” Robin confessed. And at first, Rod said nothing. But one night, he couldn’t take the suspense anymore. “Have you seen the mouse?” he asked his wife. “He thought the joke was on me!” Robin said. It’s the same life—full of jokes—in a new home, where bay and earth collide. The muskrat eats the fish, the sun illumes the docks and trees; the Jabins take it all in, from their sanctum on the point. AH

Basements are often a place where we put things that we want out of sight and mind. They also are used as playrooms to keep active children and their toys away from main floor living spaces. Then there is the homeowner who treats the basement as another floor, making it a full living space in its own right. That’s the case with these Davidsonville homeowners who turned a dingy, mostly unfinished basement into an entertainment haven. To undertake this extensive remodel, they turned to architects Craig Martin and Kurt Shepard of SPIRE Architecture, who in turn brought in Aaron Drummond of TailorCraft Builders. The space is designed so that adults can sit at the bar with a cocktail or beverage, while the kids can entertain their friends by watching a movie or playing shuffle board.
Transformed A BASEMENT
BY R O B E RT H AY WO O D . P H OTO G R A P H Y BY G E O F F R E Y H O D G D O N The builder and architect collaborated to ensure that the pool table was positioned perfectly beneath the coffered ceiling. Invisible design moves like these contribute to the feel of a polished space.
For the architects at SPIRE “the challenge was to create working spaces that could house the desired furniture—movie watching chairs, arcade games, pool and card tables, and a large bar with seating and full service—without the spaces feeling cramped.” SPIRE dealt with the challenge of the basement by employing the “technique of creating some overlapping spaces,” specifically the bar and pool room, which opens onto the sitting room with a fireplace. Simultaneously, they designed some unique enclosed spaces, namely the gym, movie room, and storage and IT rooms. These opposing yet harmonious designs created the effect of a large space that is open yet possesses discrete rooms that often flow into one another. One of those discrete rooms is the gym, which has a full-length mirror, sauna, custom built-ins, and work-out equipment

A full well-lit gym is at the ready with a wall mirror to add depth to the room. that is hidden from the rest of the basement with a bookcase “secret” door. In turning an ordinary basement into a finished space for easy living, Aaron and his team tackled many difficult factors. First of all, the space “was quite large, but choppy due to its being a basement.” The space also contained a lot of ductwork and mechanical equipment, as well as columns in the middle of the great room. All of these had to be dealt with in the design and construction and hidden from sight. Other challenges included making sure the curved aspect of the bar worked with the room and that the coffer ceiling complemented the game room entrance, theater entrance and pool table. The bar room is separated from the billiard area with a custom etched glass panel that depicts an outdoor scene from the owners’ backyard, (and includes the family cat). Construction of this type requires ingenuity, as when the builder had to make mock up panels out of plywood to make sure they could physically get the etched panels down the steps. For any basement remodel, a key challenge is to overcome the dungeon-like feel of a space below ground level. Lacking natural light, the team, Aaron says, “had to get creative with the lighting and controls.” With these problems solved, the team’s mission has been accomplished: the space now truly feels like an extension of the home. TECHNOLOGY IN THE KITCHEN By Tracy McGuinness, AKBD Designer, Kitchen Encounters
Evolving technology is a fact of modern life. And no room in the house has been more impacted by technological change than the kitchen. Innovations only a few generations ago transformed the process of meal preparation from endless hours of physical drudgery to modern convenience. Appliances we now take for granted saved significant time and effort. Just imagine feeding a family without the benefit of a modern range, microwave, refrigerator or dishwasher! Today, our demand for information, connectivity and improved efficiency stakes a claim on our kitchens, resulting in creative technology solutions. Although high-ticket appliances—such as WiFi enabled smart refrigerators—have dominated the headlines, we will explore a few simpler, more immediate ways to include technology in your kitchen design.
Tablets, phones and computers can charge out of sight in a “docking drawer,” reducing clutter and the presence of distracting cords. Photograph courtesy Harmoni Kitchens

The kitchen is the unofficial hub of the modern home, where family members gather; and where people hang out, there are sure to be wireless devices. In addition to the standard electrical outlets, consider adding a few USB outlets to an island seating area so kids doing homework or adults working from home can plug in. We often include a drop zone in our kitchen designs. This is a designated area to corral keys, mail, chargers and other bits and pieces that otherwise end up cluttering the kitchen counter. A great new innovation is a docking drawer outlet installed in the back of a drawer box. It allows chargers to remain plugged in and stored out of sight in the drawer. Docking drawers should be installed by a licensed electrician. Code compliant models include articulating arms to protect wiring and safety features to cut the power in case of fault. Today’s cooks can access a universe of information from the internet. Consider integrating an iPad or tablet into your kitchen design to facilitate menu planning, shopping list creation and access to recipe sites such as allrecipes.com and epicurious.com. Specialty hardware mounts allow a tablet to hang under wall cabinets, keeping workspace clear. Or use a countertop tablet mount to hold the screen at an easy angle for viewing. Attach a magnetic holder to mount a tablet to the fridge. Insert your tablet into a protective sleeve to protect it from splatters and spills.
Many clients request that we include a flat screen television in their kitchen design. Ideally, the screen should be located within the sight line of the prep zone and people seated at an island. Consider a corner location or a niche built into cabinetry above the refrigerator or wall ovens. There are space saving flip-down screens that fit neatly under wall cabinets. Or, for the ultimate in hideaway convenience, install a television lift that rises out of base cabinets and lowers back down to store out of sight. The trend toward wired kitchens will continue. But incorporating technology into your kitchen need not be overwhelming. The best way to make the most of your investment is to work with a professional. Certified Kitchen and Bath Designers (CKBD) have been tested by the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) to ensure their clients get the benefit of their expertise in functional designs that adhere to established guidelines for safety and convenience. A skilled kitchen designer can help make your dreams a reality and provide the best outcome for your home. AH RESOURCE: Kitchen Encounters, kitchenencounters.biz, Annapolis, Maryland

It is remarkable that the series survives in Maryland. We have Dr. Hugh Hampton Young to thank. Dr. Young, a Baltimore physician and student of Maryland history, secured four of them from Sir Thomas Calvert Eden, a Calvert descendant who, had put all six to auction at Sotheby’s in London in 1933. Dr. Young purchased the four that did not sell. He then purchased the fifth portrait from Lord Fairfax of Cameron, a Prince George’s County native. One of the six portraits was missing, though. It was owned by none other than William Randolph Hearst who planned to display it in his oceanside castle. Believing that the portraits belonged in Baltimore, Dr. Young told the Enoch Pratt Free Library that if they acquired the portrait from Mr. Hearst, he would gladly present the other five as a gift. Mr. Hearst agreed to sell the
4th Lord Baltimore, Benedict Leonard Calvert (1679-1715)
painting and in 1940, Dr. Young donated the paintings to the Library. The six paintings have hung for more than 80 years in the Central Hall of Pratt’s Central Library building, which is undergoing a comprehensive multiyear renovation. The paintings had to be moved for safe-keeping, and it seemed appropriate that they sojourn for a time in the historic State House among other artifacts of early Maryland. Now on loan, they will eventually return to the city that bears the name of their subjects. To see all six Lords Baltimore paintings, visit the Maryland State House, 100 State Circle, Annapolis, MD. Alexander explains that the boy’s father, Charles Calvert, had gone to Maryland as Governor in 1661, but returned with his son to England for a visit in 1669, when this portrait could have been painted. 60.

If you travel to Venice, make sure you visit the Peggy Guggenheim Museum on the Grand Canal. The elegant home houses the art collection of Peggy Guggenheim (1989-1979). Born into the wealthy Guggenheim family in New York City, she was the daughter of Benjamin Guggenheim, who died when the Titanic sank in 1912. With the roughly $2.5 million inheritance she received in 1919 at 21 years old, she began to devote her time and money to befriending artists and building a collection of art that includes Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst (the surrealist artist who was her husband for some years), Jackson Pollock, Agnes Martin and many others. Beginning in 1951, Peggy opened her house (the 18th century Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, which she acquired several years earlier) and collection in Venice to the public during the summer months. Now open year-round as a museum, the Palazzo has become one of the most visited attractions in Venice. The museum, which has an intimacy that larger museums often lack, houses one of the most impressive collections of European and American modern art in the world. CONTEMPORARY DESIGN, TIMELESS COMFORT Throughout our history, Loewen has delivered an unrivaled aesthetic that both complements and inspires changes in architectural trends. The timeless comfort that radiates from our Douglas Fir and Mahogany windows and doors provides the perfect contrast of warmth to contemporary design, while the ever-changing patinas of our copper and bronze clad products offer rich, deep textures that are both contemporary and future-facing in their own right. We craft our windows and doors with aesthetic value that endures — just like the long-lasting performance of all our products. We look forward to helping you realize your vision.
