Hammond-Harwood House

1

When is the last time you walked through the exquisite doors of the Hammond-Harwood House, if, that is, you have visited it at all? This impressive 18th-century home, now a museum open to the public, is among the finest architectural structures of Colonial America. This year local Garden Clubs will be decorating the home for the holidays which you can visit throughout December. The theme this year is “An 1820’s Dutch American Christmas with the Loockerman Family,” referring to the time in the 1820’s when Loockerman lived in the mansion. On Friday, November 30 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm guests can attend a Greens Show Preview Party and tour the decorated house, purchase holiday Greens, like magnolia and boxwood wreaths, as well as enjoy hors d’Oeuvres and wine. Tickets for the Preview Party and pre-orders for the greens can be bought through the website: hammondharwoodhouse.org or by calling 410.263.4683 extension 10.

2

There are more offerings that pay tribute to Colonial America which will enrich your holdiay. On Fridays and Saturdays from December 7-22 you can experience Illuminated London Town in Edgewater while sipping hot cider on a chilly evening. Enjoy colonial nighttime festivities and holidays at the candlelit William Brown House. Special performances in the gardens take place each week. For details, visit, historiclondontown.org.

3

While we value greatly our region for its significance to Colonial America, we also appreciate that we live in a part of the country that celebrates the contemporary arts. In that vein, you have to get to Baltimore to see the retrospective of the genius camp filmmaker, John Waters. John Waters: Indecent Exposure is the first retrospective of his photographs, sculptures, sound and video work. You have until January 6, 2019 to see the show. For times visit artbma.org.

Colors A HOUSE OF

ANNAPOLIS ARCHITECT IN MEXICO

BY CHRISTINE FILLAT PHOTOGRAPHY BY TIM STREET-PORTER RISING FROM THE PRIMEVAL RUINS is a regular theme for Merida, Mexico. Sixty-five million years ago, an asteroid crashed to Earth and landed here, on the Yucatan Peninsula, in the incontrovertible event that obliterated the dinosaurs. Some 3,000 years ago, the Mayan civilization prospered here only to be invaded, in the 16th century, by Spanish conquistadores, who smashed the Mayan temples. Modern day Merida—with its grid of city blocks, thriving cosmopolitan life and tropical climate—captured the imagination of David Serrano and Robert Willson, artists and owners of Downtown, a home interiors store in Los Angeles known for its prescient collections.

Vol. 9, No. 6 2018 25

Glass blocks bring natural light into the rooms in a controlled fashion, necessary to temper the harsh rays of the sun. A rough rubble wall that borders the property can be glimpsed through the kitchen window.

When Serrano and Willson brought Annapolis-based architect Chip Bohl to visit the house they had purchased, all that remained of the original structure were the ruins of three 20th century rooms. A wall established the boundaries of the rectangular-shaped property, measuring 30 feet wide and 172 feet deep. Bohl designed a series of connected rooms and outdoor spaces that utilize every square foot of the tract. Bohl’s unifying concept of home design is to create a very unique site-specific house, whether it be in Annapolis, the eastern shore of Maryland, upstate New York or Los Angeles. “The specifics of this house are perfectly attuned to Merida,” Bohl said. “It’s all about the sun and the weather.” Climate drives the sensibility of this house. “Because it’s a very hot and humid environment,” Bohl explains, “one is always looking for shade and shelter. Geologically, it’s the same as Florida. There are no rivers in the Yucatan in the same way that there are typically no rivers in Florida. The Earth is porous limestone bedrock, and the rain perks down through the limestone. All the rivers are subterranean.”

26

ANNAPOLIS HOME

The original rooms were reconfigured into a living room, study and guest room. The rest of the house flows naturally from those rooms to its new assignations: two guest rooms, a library, kitchen, dining room and master suite. Three courtyards—one with a luxurious swimming pool and grotto—provide a view to nature. Operable clerestory windows are set high into the walls to capture breezes. The house was built using locally-sourced concrete, stucco, steel, glass and limestone. Merida has a tradition of master craftsmen who can build just about anything out of those materials. “Because the design of the house is consistent with the typical techniques of construction there,” Bohl says, “it was natural for the [local] contractors to build this building. Although the spaces are unique, and the use of courtyards and high windows are modern, the construction is still very much in the vocabulary of traditional building.” Wood is used sparingly for such decorative elements as shutters and doors.

The home’s original rooms were reconfigured into a living room, study, and guest room. Walls are stucoo and polished concrete and materials are locally sourced.

Vol. 9, No. 6 2018 27

Walls are built extremely high, from 12 feet to 20 feet, to stimulate the natural flow of air. Walls are as much as two feet thick for insulation.

The home has three courtyards, all with modern elements and treatments, including contemporary sculpture.

The original rooms share a traditional ceiling treatment of steel beams and cedar planks supporting a concrete roof. Glass blocks are discretely placed in the corners of the ceilings, bringing natural light into the rooms. Bohl employed this method throughout the house. “There is always this little splash of daylight in the corners,” he said. “It’s a terrific technique to light a room and bring in daylight in a very controlled way, particularly in a climate of a really severe and hostile sun.” Ceilings in the new parts of the house are made of poured concrete. To help deal with the effects of heat and humidity, the ceilings are built extremely high, from 12 feet to 20 feet, to stimulate the natural flow of air. Walls are as much as two feet thick for insulation. Overhangs cantilever four feet out over windows and exterior doorways to provide extra shade. Bohl worked very closely with Willson and Serrano on the color palette of the house. “Their sense of color is just phenomenal,” Bohl said. Together, they designed the color patterns and tiles to be made specifically for this project. Floors throughout the house are ravishingly graphic 6-by-6 concrete tiles, made in a traditional French style and poured in Merida.

While the interior walls are stucco and polished concrete, a rough rubble wall peeks through in the dining room and in the kitchen garden wall, offering delicious earthy texture to the house. “It was thrilling [to do this project],” says Bohl. “It was thrilling to understand the nature of construction and the nature of architecture in a different environment and culture. It was really, really fascinating.” Intelligence of form, color, materials and craftsmanship, and understanding the limitations of the environment all work together in this house. From ruin to masterpiece, Chip Bohl’s Merida House is, quite simply, magnificent. AH

IN CROWNSVILLE

B Y K Y M B E R LY TAY L O R | P H O T O G R A P H Y B Y J E N N I F E R H U G H E S Is there a home where a giant lotus, wild horses and a burnt orange ceiling studded with gold stars can coexist? Is it possible for such wonders to cohere rather than collide? The answer is yes—beneath the wand of Annapolis-based Katalin Farnady of Farnady Interiors. In this home in Crownsville, she juxtaposes textures, finishes and colors in unpredictable combinations and integrates pre-existing furnishings. Farnady, who was born in Hungary and regularly travels the world, joins the old with the new, summoning an exotic, international palette to forge a fresh and unusual beauty impossible to duplicate. Farnady explains that her client lives in a large traditional home that, though lovely, did not quite express the family’s exuberant personality. The homeowner wanted to incorporate some of her own artwork, furnishings, antiques and heirlooms from her parents but also do something fresh and new. The challenge of creating an eclectic mixture using about 20 percent of the existing furnishings did not faze Farnady. Instead, she helped her client refine her vision and take some risks to create a one-of-a-kind home. “She wanted custom designs and quality. Those are the things I like to do,” says Farnady. She adds that, importantly, her client was not afraid to experiment and was open to uncommon combinations.

At first, her client wanted only to redesign the master suite to echo the clean elegant suites in grand hotels. Together, Farnady and the homeowner, who loves horses, combed through galleries in Baltimore and found just the right equine painting to set up a moody palette of black, brown and blue in the bedroom. In an intimate sitting area, muted colors soothe and encourage introspection. The palette continues in the bathroom but intensifies. Its floor, walls and shower surround are carved from a single large hand-finished ceramic tile from In Home Stone, located in the Annapolis Design District. Farnady manipulated the size of the tile and the patterns to create a kind of dance, where colors pirouette, advance and recede, always in relationship to each other. There is movement in the air. The deep copper soaking tub—welcome departure from the ubiquitous white bathtub—recalls a simple boudoir in a Florentine villa. It is reminiscent of Italy, one of the couple’s favorite destinations. One area of the home led to another and then another. “We started on the master suite and began to redesign more rooms in the home,” recalls Farnady. “When we got to the dining room, I asked her if she wanted to tone things down and she said ‘why?’” This was music to her ears. By now, she had learned something crucial about her client. “She liked all of the eras—classic, traditional and contemporary—and

There are many finishes, textures and custom elements in the living room by Maryland artists commisioned by Katalin Farnady. The walls are hand finished to look like linen and the armoire is hand-painted. The fireplace wall is crafted to “frame a giant horse painting.

Vol. 9, No. 6 2018 35

Burnt orange wallpaper studded with gold stars adds an extra layer of interest to the living room.

The master suite’s disciplined palette, which includes blues, whites, and shades of brown, is choreographed to encourage tranquility.

wanted to include them,” Farnady notes. “I was able to bring these together and forward into a modern sensibility.” For example, in the dining room, she points to the giant magnoliastudded wallpaper which includes a black striped background. “The stripe grounds it in the traditional and the large scale of the flower brings it back into the modern. The black adds drama,” she notes. Above the table, a magnificent chandelier cascades, composed of famous Murano glass. Muted green velvet chairs speak to its royal presence, yet remain submissive. What distinguishes this room and others throughout the home, and Farnady’s work in general, is that secondary and tertiary colors surface and harmonize briefly, in their own syncopated rhythm. Farnady prefers a harmonic and organic flow of color rather than forcing a predictable or prosaic “match.” In the living room, there is a hint of the West, and of Kentucky, a place her parents often travelled. Walls are hand-painted to look like linen, brightening up the atmosphere. A large pre-existing frameless painting of horses inspired the design of the fireplace wall. “The art is actually framed by the wall itself,” Farnady notes about this custom element. Close examination reveals that, indeed, the wall itself is built around the painting and becomes a frame, repeating some of the rough wood texture. For the living room ceiling, Farnady chose a burnt orange wallpaper with gold stars. With hand-painted walls, orange ceiling and gestural horse painting, this room is in itself a performance to delight the eye, a feast

for the soul. And in a reading nook, a chair is covered in a surprising purple-red leather “almost like delicious red wine,” says Farnady. One would not necessarily pair a deep purple chair with an orange ceiling, but Farnady makes it work. “I am lucky my client wanted to do things like this…it is unusual to find leather in this uncommon shade. The piano room is a place where the classic and traditional pervade. It includes many antiques from the homeowner’s parents; the striped chair and pre-existing green sofa add a touch of nostalgia. Memories permeate the air and find physical form in these solid supporting objects. The lotus is revered in other cultures for it springs forth from the mud to become a pure and exquisite bloom. Horses symbolize freedom and a strong will. Golden stars in an orange sky are a vision. It is fitting that these and other emblems appear in this color-drenched home to express this family’s exuberant song of itself. AH

Acton Hall is a rare 18th-century residence on its original waterfront. Its lineage dates back to Lord Baltimore, the founding of Maryland, and the creation of Murray Hill, one of Annapolis’ historic neighborhoods prized for its Spa Creek views, well-tended properties and Colonial-era architecture.

BY ROBERT HAYWOOD PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF CHRISTIE’S INTERNATIONAL REAL ESTATE

Exceptional Real Estate

The master suite with wood fireplace has wide octagonal windows overlooking the garden, pool, and Acton Cove.

Acton Hall is one of the most important and beautifully crafted 18th-century homes in Annapolis. Homeowners Bill and Judith Kardash have preserved the Georgian mansion with great respect and care. As someone who lives with Annapolis’ colonial history every day, Bill Kardash is exceptionally qualified to serve as chairman of the Board of Trustees of Historic Annapolis. The story of Acton Hall, as told by Kardash, reveals a history lesson in the earliest years of Annapolis. The home is central to the founding of Murray Hill. In 1651, Cecil Calvert (“Lord Baltimore”) granted approximately 100 acres to Richard Acton, a carpenter from the Isle of Wight. Originally, “Acton” was used as farmland as well as the first port of entry for Anne Arundel’s Towne (now Annapolis) from 16881691. Acton sold the land to John Hammond in 1708. Hammond maintained the plantation until his death in 1730, when the property transferred to his five sons. The home incudes many built-ins and accents of classic crown molding as well as three unusual “jib” doors.

Col. Philip Hammond, a military officer and local politician, acquired the property from his brothers and began construction on Acton Hall in 1760. In 1844, Hammond’s heirs sold the property to Capt. James Murray, who lived in Acton Hall with his family through most of the second half of the 19th century. In 1890, the property was subdivided into city-size lots, creating Murray Hill. Today, Acton Hall continues to be a focal point of Murray Hill. After living in and caring for the home for 29 years, the Kardash family decided to put it on the market and hand over the keys to a new owner. Although a private residence, we all hope the new homeowner will continue to preserve this remarkable structure and keep Murray Hill’s historic significance alive. AH

AT THE THEATER WITH

Lucinda Merry-Browne Lucinda Merry-Browne, an energetic visionary, is rarely at home. Her demanding job as founding artistic director of Annapolis’ nonprofit theater, Compass Rose, keeps her on the go. When she’s not raising funds for a new building for the theater, she is directing plays where she takes pains to nurture synergy between professional actors and child-actors-in-training. Currently, the 11-year-old Compass Rose has no fixed address; recent performances have been held in area hotels to rave reviews. But the theater’s temporary “homelessness” has not deterred Merry-Browne from guiding the theater’s intense and steadfast mission, which is to provide evocative and entertaining theater while maintaining the utmost educational and artistic standards. We recently caught up with Merry-Browne to learn more about her deep roots in theater and how they continue to expand throughout Annapolis.

A A A BY ELIZABETH HEUBECK | PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY COMPASS ROSE THEATER

It seems as if acting is in your blood. Did you show evidence of your “inner performer” as a child?

I

started doing theater when I was 8, in my attic. I was one of four children; my sisters were younger. I made them do the shows. We invited neighbors in. I always wanted to perform. What were some formative acting experiences you remember from your childhood?

What impact has teaching had on you?

I

t opened my eyes to what theater can do for students. Some of them still stay in touch. One is a playwright in Ireland. Another is a car dealer in Gaithersburg. I got a call from him one day, and he told me he used his acting every day. Do you prefer being behind the scenes coaching actors, or onstage in front of an audience?

I

I

You received an English degree from Duke. Why not a theater degree?

Y

showed promise early, and my parents took me across town to the Pittsburgh Playhouse at the age of 12. I also did a lot at my high school. When I was 16, I played Joan of Arc.

B

ack in the day, the closest thing you could get was an English degree. I went to Wellesley College for two years. At the time, I was frustrated. I wanted to be an actor, so I ended up going to The American Academy of Dramatic Arts, an acting school in New York City, for what would have been my college junior year. When I completed the program, I yielded to pressure to finish my degree. I got a bachelor’s from Duke in a year. After college, you taught theater to high school students, correct?

Y

es. When I got married to my first husband, who had a job teaching school in Montgomery County, I took a job as a drama teacher at a local high school there. When I first started, they gave me six English classes and one drama class. By the time I left, I was teaching six drama and one English class. I pushed it.

enjoy both equally. I do plan to do back onstage next season. But I’m very careful. It’s very important that the theater comes first.

Compass Rose is looking for a new home. Are you hoping to stay in Annapolis?

es. We have a developer, we have the architect. We just need to nail down the location. We will require state, county and city money to make it happen. We would like to be a part of the whole arts revolution happening in Annapolis. How are you preparing for this pending change?

W

e’re raising funds for the building, building our board of directors, applying for grants, laying the groundwork. It’s distracting from what we’re trying to do, which is mount professional productions. How hopeful are you that the theater will find a new home here?

I

am hopeful. We have a tremendous amount of support in the community; our membership base grows 30 percent every year. And the mayor is very arts-friendly. AH

St. Michaels Christmas In

R Home Tour Preview

By Kymberly Taylor - Photography by William Wilhelm Around this time of year, some of us feel exhilarated, while others admit to being a little weary, overwhelmed, even downright crazy. After all, there are feasts to prepare, presents to buy, cider to mull, homes to decorate, and perhaps even pets to buy sweaters for. Where are the elves when you really need them? With all of this going on, you may need an injection of Christmas magic. If so, head over to St. Michaels, Maryland, where enchantment awaits at the Christmas in St. Michaels celebration December 7-9. This quaint fishing town steeped in early American and maritime history is transformed by the glory of Christmas Past and Present. There is a Yuletide party, Santa’s Wonderland for the kids, parades, holiday shopping and a gingerbread competition. The highlight of the weekend, though, is the Tour of Homes. During this event, you may explore seven homes that include the following:

Vol. 9, No. 6 2018 51

First Stop:

Historic Grandeur Experience an old-fashioned Christmas in a Victorian waterfront home that dates to 1872. Residents who purchased it in the 19th century for $450 later expanded the home to 1590 square feet. In 2015, the current owners undertook an ambitious 16-month expansion and restoration. During the process, the original 510-square-foot structure was revealed and preserved. The residents were able to realize their vision to respect this significant home’s historical heritage and harmoniously incorporate 21stcentury open space design.

52

ANNAPOLIS HOME

Second Stop:

In-Town Charm You’ll see another historic home built a little later, around 1877. It is located near the town’s bustling center and sits on a wide avenue with period street lamps. Inside, you’ll find a staircase with intricate carvings that suggest the original owner’s prosperity, along with two chimneys and three open fireplaces.

Vol. 9, No. 6 2018 53

Third Stop:

Contemporary Elegance A new waterfront home designed by architect Chris Britton will give you plenty of decorating ideas. The tree in the great room has a wildlife theme, and a small one in the back honors the owner’s pets both past and present, including six golden retrievers. Stay awhile to enjoy the large stone fireplace, coffered ceiling with inset nautical chart and display of antique Lionel trains.

The homes located in town are within walking distance of each other and there is transportation to outlying locations. Here, in one beautiful town, you can take a break from your checklist or, better yet, make it disappear. Get your shopping done and return with ideas and items to deck out your own home for the holidays. AH

Tickets for the Christmas in St. Michaels Tour of Homes can be purchased online at christmasinstmichaels.org/product/tourof-homes/ for $25 until noon on December 7th. After that, tickets can be purchased in person for $30 at the Granite Lodge on St. Mary’s Square.

GRAND FINALE By Robert C. Hruby, ASLA Photography Courtesy of Campion Hruby Landscape Architects and David Burroughs

“THE DARK STEMS AND SEED HEAD ‘BUTTONS’ DANCE AS SCULPTURE ABOVE THE GRASSES IN THE FALL.”

60

ANNAPOLIS HOME

As fall creeps in, I head back to the garden high above the Severn River to observe my favorite season. Summer seemed to drag on this year, yet the transformation from heat and humidity to cool and dry air happened practically overnight. We are confronted with the final re-bloomers of summer, alongside the fall bloomers and the skeletal remains of plants that have checked out for the year. These arrangements are highlighted by the fall foliage brought on by the cool nights. The changes in temperature, the wind and the rain can make these final fleeting moments of the season easy to miss. I call attention to all of this because when it comes to designing a four-season garden, you have to think about what plants look like in their final season stage, alongside plants that are just having their moment. Repetition of fall flowers, ornamental grasses, dried stems, fruit and colorful foliage can lead your eye through the garden. Following are some to get you started.

Layers of amsonia hubrichtii are changing to yellow, in contrast with the dark foliage of a dwarf crepe myrtle.

FALL FLOWERING PLANTS Asters are great fall flowering perennials that come in a variety of sizes and range of purples and blues. Combine native asters with fine textured grasses and perennials for a great late season show. Goldenrods have panicles of showy yellow flowers in late summer and fall. This fine textured perennial, spreading by seed and rhizomes, will out-compete the weeds and other weaker perennial plants.

Amsonia in the foreground is framing the aster oblongifolius ‘October Skies’ hanging over the stone wall.

ORNAMENTAL GRASSES The fine texture of warm season grasses is a nice green filler in the summer perennial border. In the fall, the fountain grass and switchgrass species come alive with blooms, seed heads and color. The filler of summer becomes the dominant feature in the fall landscape.

Monarch butterflies visiting 6' tall aster tataricus ‘Jindai.’

Vol. 9, No. 6 2018 61

STEMS The early to mid-summer blooming black-eyed Susan and coneflowers dry out in late August. The dark stems and seed head “buttons” dance as sculpture above the grasses in the fall. While these plants add structure to the garden, their seed heads host a variety of insects and provide a food source for birds. FRUIT Two fruit-producing shrubs of the fall and winter are beautyberry and winterberry holly. The vibrant purple berries of the beautyberry hit their stride when the goldenrods are in bloom. This wonderful combination only lasts a few weeks, while the red winter berries persist as long as the birds allow. These shrubs love wet soil and look great with ornamental grasses. FALL COLOR There are a few perennials and many shrubs that have remarkable fall-colored foliage. My favorite perennial example is amsonia, which turns from green to yellow to orange after a few cold nights. This fine textured plant has something to offer in every season. The Virginia sweetspire shrub turns burgundy in the fall and can tolerate the wet clay soils in your garden. Combine both of these with asters. Solidago rugosa ‘Fireworks’ surround the callicarpa dichotoma shrub.

As you can see, the overlapping fall transformations make up fast moving combinations that are easy to miss. Try to get out and see this before the leaves blanket the landscape for the winter. AH

C A FÉ BR E T TON:

A Hidden Treasure in Severna Park By C h r istine F il l at . Phot og raphy by Elizabet h Schaeffer

Café Bretton is a special getaway in Severna Park. Located on the long, meandering back road that links Baltimore and Annapolis, the cafe is a French country-style house where starched white cloths adorn the tables, paintings decorate the walls, and Frank Sinatra croons from the speakers. Affable Victor Ledezma greets us at the door. Ledezma wears many hats, including owner and chef. He is the heart and soul of Café Bretton. While he is from Bolivia, Ledezma has worked with many cuisines while jockeying sauté pans in different restaurants from Florida to Maryland. At Da Mimmo in Baltimore’s Little Italy, he learned Italian techniques. “I pick up things from here and there, and then I make my own version,” he said. “You experiment, you try, you taste it and get feedback from customers.”

68

ANNAPOLIS HOME

Two small bowls—one filled with soft butter, the other with tapenade— grace the table, a treat to spread on slices of crusty bread. The garlicy tapenade, while a welcome idea, tasted dull and could have used some freshening up. We start the meal with house-made pâté and a bowl of escargot. The pâté is inspired: creamy, light and quite flavorful, served with cornichon and dijon mustard. The escargot is presented sans shells with a rich garlicy thyme wine sauce. While the snails are flavorful, the garlic sauce could use a little brightening up with some other element, perhaps something like parsley. Three salads are very good. The Caesar, with its creamy namesake dressing, is perfection. The Café salad has a lovely champagne vinaigrette and is studded with bits of gorgonzola. Spinach salad with hearts of

palm, tomato, champagne vinaigrette and avocado. All the salads are deftly prepared with crunchy greens and just the right amount of dressing. The entrees we choose are all-stars, individually distinctive in their preparations. Cartoccio, a special on the menu, is an Italian seafood stew. It is a bounty of mussels, clams, scallops and generous pieces of halibut. A white wine sauce ties it all together. The bowl is fresh and flavorful, and spoonfuls of the stew are hot well into the meal. While cartoccio is traditionally made in a paper wrapper, Ledezma prepares it in a sealed stew pot. “It keeps the flavor in the pot,” he says. We will not quibble with subtleties; the dish is superb. One member of our party is a frequent guest at Café Bretton. Her dish of choice is the steak au poivre, a generous two-inch-thick strip steak cooked to perfection. It’s doused with pepper and sits atop a brandy, cream and dijon sauce. This is steak au poivre at its finest. It’s tender. It’s a symphony of flavors. My dining companion salivates when she thinks about Café Bretton’s steak au poivre. In fact, try as she might, she cannot bring herself to try any other dish when she eats here. Try it and you will agree. Beef Bourguignon is French soul food, with tender chunks of beef, mushrooms and a rich wine sauce. A special on the menu, this is truly sublime—comfort food at its best. All the entrees come with a side of mashed potatoes and ratatouille. The desserts are from Café Poupon in Baltimore. The caramel napoleon satisfied our sweet tooth in many ways. The chocolate ombre cake, however, was beautiful to look at with its many layers but too dry to enjoy. In all, Café Bretton is a lovely place to spend an evening. The decor is charming and quaint. A steady flow of customers filled the tables the night we were there. This is the sort of place that has a loyal clientele. One could imagine spending many evenings in its embrace. AH

Martha Austin, who baked this fine plum pudding, married into a family of ‘fruit cake’ makers. In fact, Nancy Austin, her motherin-law and family matriarch, was renowned throughout Talbot County for this aromatic Christmas delicacy. “I am not kidding. Friends and family flowed through her home each year, leaving with a wrapped cake,” recalls Martha. “She made tens of cakes each year using small coffee cans as cake pans. Grand daughters were annually recruited to help.” The tradition continues. Her husband, Jack, and all of his sisters bake this fruit-and-nut-studded pudding every Christmas. Annapolis Home thanks Martha for generously sharing her family recipe. This cake can be spotted on page 53 in Martha Austin’s home, which is on the St. Michaels Tour.
