Welcome to the new issue of Annapolis Home. For ten years now, we have been giving visibility to Annapolis’s architectural gems and up-lighting its culture and lifestyle. We also help our readers discover the phenomenon manifest in the geography, history, and aesthetic of the Chesapeake Bay. Our current stories advance this mission. Read about a spy’s home on the Potomac, a house whose architecture draws inspiration from a lake house rather than Coastal style, and a designer who collaborates with artists to create one-of-a-kind interiors. The High-Heeled Gardner column features the magnificent Danceline tulip, whose planting season is now! We hope you enjoy this issue and wish you and your family a truly peaceful and joy-filled holiday.

In 1966, Maryland-born Maulana Karenga created Kwanzaa as an African-American holiday. Karenga’s goal was to “give Blacks an alternative to the existing holiday and an opportunity to celebrate themselves and their history, rather than simply imitate the practice of the dominant society.” You can learn about and celebrate the seven Kwanzaa principles, represented by seven candles, at an online event hosted by the Banneker-Douglass Museum in Annapolis. The activities include a spoken word performance, a Zawadi (gift making) session, live music, a virtual lighting ceremony, and a virtual ‘buy Black’ marketplace. This event takes place on Friday, December 11, from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. To register, visit bdmuseum.maryland.gov.

With most live performing arts events canceled, many people I know are spending more time than ever watching shows on Netflix, Hulu, etc. If you subscribe to these services, it is easy to do so—just click on the channel, sit back, and watch. For those who prefer to turn to the performing arts to stimulate their minds and senses, there

are options, many of them in the virtual world where we are spending more time than ever. On this note, The Annapolis Symphony is offering a livestreamed concert series that includes Holiday Classics with Music Director José-Luis Novo and the orchestra from the Music Center at Strathmore. The concert will be streamed live on Friday, December 18, at 8:00 p.m. and will utilize the Center’s multi-camera capabilities to enhance your viewing experience. To purchase tickets, and to learn about other concerts in 2021, visit annapolissymphony.org

December is a great time to visit downtown Annapolis. The City of Annapolis and its partners decorate city streets with holiday-themed flags and banners and holiday lighting, install a Christmas tree at Market Space, and a Menorah at City Dock. On December 12, the Eastport Yacht Club will hold its annual Lights Parade, visible from City Dock and Eastport. Many of these boats are ambitiously decorated, technically complex, and witty— making this a memorable family event each holiday season. For more information, visit eastportyc.org. RUSTIC

Comfort By Carol Sorgen

Photography by Curtis Martin

A family home more likely to be seen on a midwestern lakefront fits beautifully in the Mid-Atlantic. Designed by Minnesota architect Kathryn Alexander and built by Maryland-based Mueller Homes, this beautiful home situated on 64 acres in Carroll County overlooks a forest conservation area with a running stream.

“The homeowners wanted something unique that complemented the property,” says builder Paul Mueller, Jr. To that end, Alexander designed the 4,800-square-foot home to take advantage of the graded slopes and changes in elevation, with large windows providing views of the natural surroundings. “Before we started the design, we walked the property to see the terrain, the views, and the light, and to envision how the house would be set on the lot,” says Alexander. “The land and the homeowners are always our inspiration.” Mueller, Alexander, and interior designer Stacia Smith of Homewood Interiors worked closely together to create a family home whose style could be described as farmhouse chic meets industrial—a look not typically seen in the Mid-Atlantic. Alexander, who hails from the Midwest, believes that coming from a different region of the country gives her a fresh perspective on a new look for this area. “Each region of the US tends to gravitate toward certain styles, and this breaks it out of the box a little,” she says. “Midwestern styling is a little softer and more playful than East Coast houses... more relaxed, and

less purist in style.” She adds that midwestern lakefront homes are often constructed from rustic, natural materials to blend into their environment, whereas Mid-Atlantic homes, often built from brick, reference their colonial heritage with more formal, ornate styling.

brick floor has a unique Flemish bond pattern. Each random-width plank of the floors and stair treads, crafted from planks of white oak barn side wood, was hand-selected from early 19th-century barns, micro-beveled, and wire-brushed.

The unexpected result is a rustic yet modern concept home designed for an active family with two young children and a beloved family dog (who gets its own dog shower in the mudroom!).

“This is a very detailed home with high-end materials. At the same time, it’s a very usable home that’s built for longevity,” says Mueller. He points out features such as a main floor owner’s suite, a vaulted screened porch with a fireplace that overlooks the private backyard with a pass-through from the butler’s pantry that can act as a serving bar, and his and hers private offices, which have proven especially useful during these times when many of us are working from home. Alexander also included a back staircase, designed to access a more private suite so that a nanny, grandparent, or longterm guest could have their own space apart from the family.

Many features make this home a real standout. The one-of-a-kind stair rails combine hand-selected reclaimed wood paired with industrial cabling. Custom cabinetry in the butler’s pantry and powder room—as well as the wood cubbies in the mudroom— have been handcrafted from reclaimed circle sawn wormy chestnut. A handcrafted walnut furniture cabinet in the master bath suite references the modern rustic effect seen throughout the house. The

When it comes to the interior, Smith calls this project a ‘dream job’. “The homeowners gave me some adjectives of what they were looking for to get me started, and then pretty much turned me loose,” she says. Smith kept the color palette of pale gray, cream, and beige neutral throughout the home, with occasional accents in black and a striking navy island in the kitchen. The main pops of color can be found in the children’s rooms. “We wanted the interior to reflect the exterior, with the same tones that can be found in the stone, siding, and roof,” says Smith. With help from their creative team, this active family now has a distinctive home that is a fresh blend of two distinct architectural styles. AH

SPY HOUSE with a View

With wrap-around views of the Potomac River, Mount Vernon, and Washington DC, the furnishings and accessories were kept to a minimum and colors are nearly monochromatic—very much in keeping with the minimalist architecture of the rooms.

By Jeanne Blackburn Photography courtesy Jacobsen Architecture

P

rofessionals involved in the ‘spy business’ are not often associated with bright, sun-lit spaces. So it’s rather surprising that a couple of long-time government employees with a background in intelligence, now retired from the business, are physically and emotionally right at home in a space designed by the internationally-known and respected minimalists, Jacobsen Architecture. But they definitely are. Years ago, the homeowner saw a magazine feature spotlighting the work of Jacobsen Architecture. “The Hugh Newell Jacobsen home was exquisite— simple but elegant lines and large windows. It was my dream at that moment to someday own a Jacobsen house. That dream stayed with me for over twenty years,” she says. Vol. 11, No. 6 2020 43

The two seating areas were coordinated by choosing similar styles and colors for the sofa and chair while allowing each to maintain its own character. The deft use of chrome and glass accents adds personality to each.

Intent on preserving sightlines to the rest of the living area and the stunning views beyond, the kitchen was the most architecturally challenging space to tackle. Visually it reflects the tone of the adjacent spaces. 44

ANNAPOLIS HOME

Their former residences, including an 1850s wagon house, had been just the opposite. “We have always lived in traditional homes, although as I’ve gotten older, I’ve been more and more drawn to modern architecture, particularly, its clean, spare lines,” she adds. Through the years, she learned a valuable lesson regarding real estate: “If you don’t want to buy a house, don’t go looking at houses!” As she and her husband went out ‘just looking,’ it eventually led them to a 3,000 sq. ft. condo whose all-glass exterior walls offered a 270-degree view of the Potomac River from the Washington Monument to Mount Vernon. But it urgently needed a gut renovation. “We were drawn into the views, the space, and the potential for living in a glass house, 170 feet in the air with a 1,000 sq. ft. wraparound balcony. Jacobsen Architecture was my first thought,” she says. She reached out to Simon Jacobsen, founding partner and son of Hugh Newell, never expecting to receive a reply, much less interest in the project. “Less than a week later, he visited with us at the apartment… and the rest is history,” she says.

Simon Jacobsen viewed it through the eyes of a well-seasoned architect. “The project resides in a 1970s-era modern brutalist high rise overlooking the Potomac River just south of Washington. To my surprise, the spaces were actually two apartments that were clumsily conjoined 15 years earlier with not much effort or good taste.” Still, he was far from turned off by the space. “The views of the river, Alexandria, and Washington, however, gave me the immediate reflex to start clapping like a circus seal when I first walked in,” he quips. The homeowner remembers an ironic comment he made that first day—before he knew the homeowners’ professional background: “He walked out on the balcony and said, I envision this as a space that would be a perfect environment for James Bond.” Little did he know! Although it was architecturally necessary, gutting the two spaces was, according to Jacobsen, “no cakewalk. It took a valiant effort to unmask the two apartments’ walls to expose conduits, plumbing, and utilities without disturbing all of the tenants above and below.

Vol. 11, No. 6 2020 45

The dining area adjacent to the kitchen maintains the sleek, clean lines of the other public spaces, while adding subtle color and materials choices. So, it was a little like trying to create a thoughtful space in a minefield.”

Perhaps the most challenging part of the project (and the most satisfying, once it was done) was the kitchen.

The homeowners had some specific demands of the finished space. Pre-pandemic, they entertained often and still do, albeit on a much smaller scale, so they wanted a dining room that could seat ten and a living room that would accommodate both large and intimate gatherings. “I am also one of the last people in America who doesn’t want a completely open floor plan. My kitchen is my kitchen. I don’t work well with others! I am a serious cook, and having people underfoot is a distraction to my craft,” she says.

“The kitchen was a unique achievement because it wraps around a wall to maintain the commanding views, no matter where you stand while cooking. Another herculean feat was that the countertop is not the only feature of glacier white Corian; the cabinets and shelves are, too,” he said. Making this visually seamless project work was the trick. “We had to work closely with Corian engineers to fabricate a foolproof vertical/perpendicular fastener system for a material that only wants to be horizontal,” he explained.

Other demands included multiple bar areas and several guest bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms. Then, looking long term, they wanted a space that could function as an apartment within an apartment for visitors or their own short- or long-term care. “So, we were able to configure a large room with a seating area, bed space, kitchenette and bar, bath, and a closet for both clothes and storage. For now, it serves as my husband’s poker room,” she explains.

Simon credits the foreman and the owners for the fact that it all came together so well, referring to it as a partnership of understanding. “Spy House (as it’s known in their files) also won an AIA-DC award, which is very satisfying, as it is a nod of approval from your peers,” he adds.

Once the demo was done, the fun began for Simon. “I set out to make the two corner spaces as intuitive and ordered as possible while meeting the clients’ wish list. Because of the owners’ lifestyle, the public areas had to be much like a Swiss army knife: spaces that can do six different things at different times and do two things at once. Then a common avenue and sightline was created in the middle of the two to unify everything,” he said. 46

Storks’ Nest A FOYER THAT TELLS A STORY

ANNAPOLIS HOME

Interior design, the specialized profession devoted to creating and enhancing living space, often involves conceptual development, space planning, and the selection of furnishings, fabrics, cabinetry, tile, flooring, lighting, hardware, paint colors, trims, and much more. Annapolis-based interior designer Katalin Farnady often does something more uncommon by collaborating with artists to create one-ofa-kind designs. Storks’ Nest is one of her most ambitious artistic designs. For this reason, we invited Farnady to write a special Design Talk about her vision and the process she followed to achieve this striking foyer.

When designing interiors, I often like to tell a story. The Aspire Show House recently staged a benefit for The Cancer House in Washington, DC. As I am a cancer survivor myself, the opportunity to design a foyer with original, hand-painted art walls was the perfect way to tell my own story. Foyers are important and should not be overlooked when planning your interior design. An entry room introduces your home’s personality and welcomes your guests. Using soft colors, textures, form, and materiality, I was able to add unexpected elements, dimension, and drama to this foyer. These are all things I like to add to my interior spaces.

Vol. 11, No. 6 2020 67

A study of the storks’ postures. Art by Kelly Walker. Exquisitely drawn and painted upon a cream background, the storks seem to float in mid-air.

Growing up in Budapest, Hungary, children are told many folk tales. As a child, one of my favorites was about storks who deliver babies to the front steps of the house after marriage. I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer while pregnant with our first daughter. However, after all the surgeries and treatments, we both survived. The stork, a sign of hope and good fortune, arrived in my life, even during turmoil. Several years later, the stork also returned to our front steps with a very big gift—our twin daughters! Sixteen years later, I am excited to share our beautiful survival story through this foyer that features and honors the stork. Who doesn’t like to hear about a very happy ending, right? To achieve my vision, I enlisted the talented artist Kelly Walker of Artstar Custom Paintwork. Starting with a neutral background, Kelly applied a soft transition in gradual ombré for our larger-than-life cranes. The room was carefully selected to speak to the scale and colorway of the adjacent rooms. We selected the ombré background colors from the ash hardwood floor and kept the birds black and white to keep with the monochromatic vision. AH

BY DYLAN ROCHE | STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY GUTIERREZ STUDIOS For John Gutierrez, it was always about the artistry and craftsmanship. Even before the Baltimore native founded his business that would eventually grow into the thriving Gutierrez Studios, the ambitious woodworker had a vision for making a big impact on the arts and architecture scene. “He was able to visualize and had a future in his mind of a much larger company that could do a lot of things,” says Roya Golpira, the studio’s president and CEO, and Gutierrez’s partner of 30 years up until his death in 2010. “Having come from a background of being an artist, he was always willing and ready to figure out the next thing—even if he’d never done it before. John never said no to anything, so if a project involved a material he hadn’t worked with before, he kept exploring. He was such a creative person and always willing to work with something new.” With this can-do spirit and his connections across a network of other craftsmen, Gutierrez expanded from woodworking to metalworking and other projects. Today, the studio works with

an array of materials to handle any part of a customer’s built environment, whether that’s decorative lighting, impressive signage, grand staircases, beautiful yet practical benches and tables, or even larger-than-life sculptures. For the talented team of 23 who work in the studio’s 20,000-squarefoot workshop located on Clipper Point Road in Baltimore, their work is not only about craftsmanship but also problem-solving and truly helping customers realize their vision. “A lot of times, what you find is people do one aspect of what we do,” Golpira explains. “You might find people who are strictly designers—they’re just going to design the scope of the project. Then there are people who are strictly fabricators—they’re going to take somebody’s drawings and build it. And then there are people who just finish it or just install it. In our case, we are capable of taking a concept all the way from design and engineering to the construction and installation.” It requires expert talent to pull off these kinds of projects; Gutierrez Studios has been fortunate to retain many of its staff for decades. Kevin Weston, the studio’s general manager, notes that this longevity means the craftsmen have not only strengthened their Vol. 11, No. 6 2020 79

individual skills but also galvanized their ability to work as a cohesive team. “We’ve pulled from a very varied group of past experiences to find the right people and energy and chemistry that can work together in all of this controlled chaos,” he says. “We’ve been really lucky over the years to attract the right people.” Golpira and Weston agree that the rewarding part of leading Gutierrez Studios is the lasting impact they can have on their clients. Although the studio works with both commercial and residential clients, this reward is even greater with the residential ones. A person’s built environment is where they live, work, play, and ultimately thrive—so it’s only natural the studio plays a role in improving their quality of life. The Gutierrez team carries that understanding with them from the moment a client explains their vision to the final stages when the piece is installed. As Weston puts it, “We’re helping create their dream house—we’ve helped them create the house they want to live in for the rest of their lives.” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT GUTIERREZ STUDIOS, VISIT GUTIERREZSTUDIOS.COM 80

NEIGHBORHOOD VISIT

BAY RIDGE ON THE CHESAPEAKE BY CHRISTINE FILLAT

82 ANNAPOLIS HOME Photograph by Geoffrey Hodgdon

On a 347-acre landmass overlooking the Chesapeake Bay, just south of the city of Annapolis, the sea air is as much a part of life in Bay Ridge as the trees and grass. The area is entirely residential; Farragut Road leads into and out of the neighborhood of 460 homes. There is no vernacular to the residences; winterized ’20s summer cottages share space with more modern homes and the occasional mini-mansion. With the Severn River, Lake Ogleton, and the Chesapeake Bay surrounding the community, water is a formidable presence in daily life. It’s that proximity to the water that sets the tone for the whole community. “It doesn’t matter if it’s the middle of the summer or January: there are always people out riding bikes, running, walking, doing outdoor activities and taking in the views,” states Gretchen Littlefield, Bay Ridge resident. Bay Ridge is uniquely suited for families. Littlefield lives here because this is a community where her daughter can run and play and ride her bike unsupervised. “People’s children grow up together,” she says. “It’s like something out of the 1950s.” What contributes to this air of nostalgia? Bay Ridge was first farmed in the 17th century. In the late 19th century, a grand Victorian resort was developed here. Folks arrived by steamship and railroad from Baltimore and points beyond. Thousands of post-Civil War folks visited what was then known as the “Queen Resort of the Chesapeake.” After the resort went belly-up in the early 1900s, developers began to subdivide the area for summer

cottages. In the ’20s, modest summer cottages gave way to yearround homes. Presently, it’s not uncommon for several generations of some families to live on the same block. You get the feeling that the community is a well-oiled machine. There’s a pool, a yacht club, and lots of committees to join. Early on, a civic association was established to address issues that came with the waterfront location: erosion, safety, and general land maintenance. Bay Ridge has a tradition of community celebrations, as well: a beach party to mark the beginning of the summer season (with everyone wearing matching t-shirts), a Fourth of July parade, and an end-of-season fundraiser. These get-togethers help to galvanize the families and neighbors in Bay Ridge. In March 2002, the Bay Ridge Trust purchased 110 acres of forested land slated for development. Now that the land is owned by the community, it is forever protected from any sort of development. They call this land The Big Woods, and the people of Bay Ridge are fully invested in taking care of the forest. Beyond preserving the unique wooded character of the area, The Big Woods is also environmentally valuable. Families adopt individual plots of the forest to keep it healthy and free from invasive species. In 2022, Bay Ridge will celebrate the community’s centennial and the 20th anniversary of buying The Big Woods. And so it goes; life continues. AH

The evolution of Bay Ridge—from colonial farmland to grand Victorian resort to summer coterie to the present-day community—is lovingly documented in Jane Wilson McWilliams and Carol Cushard Patterson’s seminal book, Bay Ridge on the Chesapeake (Brighton Editions, 1986). Life in Bay Ridge throughout the ages comes alive through carefully curated historical documents and photographs. This delightful read is a virtual journey back in time. The authors are hoping to reissue the book in time for the Bay Ridge Centennial. The historical photographs are courtesy of Jane Wilson McWilliams and Carol Cushard Patterson

The High-Heeled Gardener

Tulip

A TIP TOP

g

DANCELINE

H

uest Gardener, Isabella Haywood

ave you ever wondered how the sprawling fields of tulips in Holland produce the extravagant and varied bulbs we nestle into our garden soil each fall? I have recently come across this process; it is certainly a dramatic affair!

As even lines of flowers reach upwards in full bloom during the spring, a tractor-like apparatus mows them down, leaving the bulbs in the soil and shooting an arc of tulip tops into a central compartment on the tractor. (These flowers are often saved and used to construct magnificent sculptures for Holland’s annual flower parade.) Once the flowers have been sheared from the stems, the plants are considered “topped”. The remaining leaves and stems soak in the summer sun and send all their nutrients south into the bulb, which sends out three or so offshoots. In July, the leaves wither and the bulbs are scooped up, placed in bags, and sent to flower shops, where they hold themselves tightly until they can take root and flourish. Cultivating tulips takes dedication and a certain steady rhythm. Developing a new variety takes patience, vision, and about 15 to 20 years. One novel variety of tulip that has found its way from the fields of Holland into my garden bed is the Danceline, a showy yet delicate flower that moves at its own pace. Beginning in late April and slowly fluttering open over the course of a week, this tulip takes its time. When it first emerges, the petals are white with a dash of hot pink on each tip. They then erupt into a flurry, resembling a peony more than a tulip, or perhaps the backside of a well-cared-for hen. The sheer volume of petals contrasts charmingly with the delicate markings on each petal. As spring unfolds and the petals continue to fluff out, the pink dashes disperse until the whole flower changes color to an even, soft pink. With its full plumage, shifting color scheme, and exceptionally long flowering time, the Danceline tulip is sure to delight all those who plant it this fall. AH 88

Mirroring her wonderful exuberance, we have attempted our own versions of her focaccia and pesto, with thrilling results. We have never made such glistening, glorious focaccia. And the pesto! Wow! Entirely made with mortar and pestle, this pesto is worlds beyond any sauce processed in a food processor. For the holidays, we turn to Samin Nosrat for dessert inspiration. Her Apple and Frangipane Tart is just the kind of special occasion dolce we crave. AH

Apple and Frangipane Tart adapted from Salt Fat Acid Heat FOR THE FRANGIPANE • 3/4 cup toasted almonds • 3 tablespoons sugar • 2 tablespoons almond paste • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature • 1 large egg • 1 teaspoon Kosher salt • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract

FOR THE CRUST • 1 cup flour • 1/4 cup sugar • Pinch of salt • 1 stick of unsalted butter, frozen • 1/4 cup water with an ice cube in it

FOR THE TART • 3 tart Honeycrisp apples, pared, cored, and sliced in pieces • Sugar

TO MAKE THE CRUST:

ASSEMBLAGE:

Cut the butter into pieces.

Roll out the crust to fit the pie pan. Flour a work surface, place the dough in the center. Dust the dough with flour. Roll out from the center, lifting and turning the dough all the while. If cracks form around the edges, place your hands on the sides of the dough and press the edges back toward the center of the dough. Continue rolling out, occasionally flipping the dough, dusting the work surface and the top of the dough with flour as it is incorporated. This regular pressing of the edges, turning, and flipping the dough will keep it from sticking to the work surface.

Fill the crust with the frangipane.

Fit the dough to the pie pan. Press the edges into the shape of your choosing.

Enjoy with ice cream or whipped cream, warm from the oven or cooled.

Process the flour, sugar, salt, and butter in a food processor until all is incorporated. Scatter cold water over the mixture a little at a time, and pulse for full two-second intervals, adding chilled water little by little until the dough just holds together. The dough should not feel sticky or too dry. Mold dough into a disc. Wrap in wax paper, chill in the refrigerator at least one hour. THE FRANGIPANE: Process all of the ingredients in a food processor until a thick paste is made. PREHEAT THE OVEN TO 425° F

Arrange the apples in the crust in a decorative arrangement that appeals to you. Scatter a smattering of sugar over the pie. Bake at 425° F for 20 minutes. Reduce the heat to 400° F for 15 minutes. Reduce the heat to 350° F for a final 15 minutes. The pie is done when the fruit is soft. If the crust browns during the cooking, place foil over the pie to avoid burning.

Alternatively, you can purchase a pie crust. There are many good quality unbaked crusts available in the refrigerated section of the grocery store. Vol. 11, No. 6 2020 93
