Robert’s Picks 1

The reward of living in the Annapolis area is that we have so many extraordinary cultural opportunities available to us. At the National Gallery of Art, you have a chance to see the work of Barbara Kruger, a provocative contemporary feminist artist who has had enormous influence on the definition art from the late 1980s to the present. Her work often combines text and image, with black and white photographs overlaid with assertive and sometimes ambiguous statements. Her art leaves the viewer questioning some facet of power relations and sexual identity. Kruger’s work will be on display at the National Gallery of Art from September 30, 2016 to January 22, 2017. For gallery hours, visit nga.gov.

The Annapolis Symphony begins its 2016–17 season with a concert, Lovers and Dreamers, featuring the music of Beethoven, Berlioz and Kodály. The concert takes place on September 30 and October 1, 2016. Guest violinist Midori will perform. For information on this concert and the full season, visit annapolissymphony.org.

The Fringe Festival in Annapolis describes itself as “over-the-top art and entertainment, committed to an open forum of expression.” That commitment alone should make you want to attend this evening festival of street performers on West Street. The event takes place September 21–24, 2016. For details visit fringefestivalannapolis.com.

4

Leading architects and designers in the home industry come out for the Annapolis Home Builder and Fine Design Awards. This year’s awards banquet will be held during the evening on Thursday, October 13 at The Westin Annapolis. An independent panel of judges who are leading professionals in the field selects the winners. The banquet is open to anyone interested in architecture, interior design or landscape design. It’s also a great networking event for home industry professionals. For complete details and to purchase tickets, visit annapolishomemag.com.

GUEST BARN ON T H E B AY BY T O M L E V I N E P H O T O G RA P H Y BY P E T E A L B E R T

If there is an iconic rural American building, it is surely the barn. Barns speak to us on an emotional level. They evoke a feeling for our agrarian past with a simplicity that is the perfect antidote for our fast paced modern lives. But for all of their nostalgic appeal, barns have sometimes inspired modernist architecture. Their style is typically simple and direct, exemplifying Mies van der Rohe’s famous edict that “less is more. With its simple geometry and bucolic setting overlooking a quiet river of the Eastern Shore, this gem at the edge of a field could easily be mistaken for a working barn. Vertical wood cladding leads the eye upward. A silo is wrapped in corrugated steel and secured with cables set at uneven intervals that gradually increase as they march up the silo, replicating an actual farm silo. Opening a pair of two-story barn doors on the gable end, you could easily imagine tractors, farm animals, bales of hay and the silo filled with corn. But when you slide open the doors, you find a recessed glass vestibule framing a sophisticated modern interior and a glass wall at the far end with views of the river.

Interior features include this pendant chandelier made with simple barn rope. Lynbrook inserted the spiral stair by crane into the narrow space.

ANNAPOLIS HOME

White interior walls and appointments recall the simplicity of early American homes on the Shore.

This structure is actually a modern guesthouse in the guise of a barn. It’s part of a farm property that Kip and Beth Fulks purchased four years ago as a weekend retreat for themselves and their two sons. It’s the small cousin to the main house, which is nearing completion on the 12-acre property. “We had a vision for the property from the day we bought it” says Kip, who is chief product officer at the Baltimore-based Under Armour. A big part of that vision was an appreciation of its location. “We wanted the property to be respectful of the history of the Eastern Shore.” And it is. In fields sometimes planted hundreds of years ago, working farms continue to define the landscape. This newly built barn is an homage to that agricultural tradition. The Fulkses spent several years using the existing house on the property but knew that they would be replacing it with a guesthouse. On a friend’s recommendation, they reached

out to Lynbrook of Annapolis and were impressed with both the firm’s track record of building large custom homes and the personal involvement of the firm’s president, Ray Gauthier. Gauthier immediately and consistently exceeded their expectations as he helped them through the long and complex process of fulfilling their vision. The owners knew that this especially creative project needed the right designer and together with Lynbrook they selected Devin Kimmel of Kimmel Studio in Annapolis. Kimmel is both an architect and landscape architect and he used both skills. Collaborating with David Mallon of Lynbrook, the team artfully integrated the barn with the surrounding landscape, the river and the large main house. The challenge for this project was “tying into the history of the site and the river,” says Kimmel. David and Devin shared

Hidden behind a sliding barn door is a silo and spiral stair built off-site by Lynbrook of Annapolis. the Fulkses’ appreciation for the site and knew that the barn would be part of the landscape history and the human history of the site and region. “There is a certain look and feel to a pastoral landscape,” notes Kimmel. “The feeling is what drove the architecture.” The Fulkses wanted a secondary utilitarian building with “a secret,” Mallon explains. “The building envelope is this ordinary vernacular barn, but as you look closer, it reveals itself as more modern with large spans of glass and wide open living [space].” A simple barn seems to await you. However, the moment you step through the front door, you’ve entered a modern realm. Beth Fulks’ vision was the driving force behind the minimalist interior. Floors are a light oak accented with concrete at the entryway and under the fireplace. To the right is an open kitchen behind a painted wood island with simple white shelves holding stacks of white dishes. Lynbrook built the custom chandelier in the dining area from Beth’s design. Its large and primitive wood base and array of clear bulbs introduce boldness and texture to the space as do the large post and beam timbers that rise dramatically to the full height of the house. Through the large glass—the central feature of the house—the outside floods in. From the living room, a custom spiral staircase winds up through the silo to the second floor. The staircase was built offsite. Lynbrook had to hoist it on a crane and gingerly lower it into the completed silo, which was only an inch wider than the staircase. The sleeping quarters upstairs evoke the imagery of a hayloft. In one of the rooms, triple bunk beds form a tower that provides breathtaking views. When the Fulkses began this project they thought about other houses and settings they admired. “We stole a little bit from everything we like,” says Kip. “We were inspired by Tidewater homes and homes on Martha’s Vineyard.” These vernacular homes are especially beautiful because they reflect history, time and place. The Fulkses

wanted their property to do the same, to “tell a story.” But no matter how dramatically that story resonates or how much you are awed by the skillful and intelligent construction, in the end Kip Fulks says that “the story for us is one of use ... we valued the use more than the visual.” The barn from afar is a familiar silhouette against the sky. It will stand firm for many years for it rises from a foundation of friendship, family and relationships. Annapolis is full of significant architecture. However, there are many once-famous properties privately owned and virtually forgotten. One of these is Holly Beach Farm, a “Chesapeake treasure” and overlooked Classic Colonial Revival mansion in Annapolis, according to architect Chip Bohl of Bohl Architects of Annapolis, New York and Los Angeles. The waterfront estate is for sale, listed by Marc Fleisher of TTR Sotheby’s International Realty, The Fleisher Group, for $14.5 million. This grand five-part Georgian mansion completed in 1908 was part of a 3,000-acre estate and summer home of industrialist magnate Sylvester Labrot, Sr. Labrot, who owned the New Orleans–based Atlantic Creosote Company, had an airstrip, trained thoroughbreds and raised cattle on his horse farm that came to be called Revell Downs. The land encompassed what is now Sandy Point State Park and Cape St. Claire. One of Labrot’s guests was Amelia Earhart, who flew in for lunch one afternoon, according to a private book by the Labrots. The cows had lunch as well—her plane’s wings were composed of fabric and glue, and since the airstrip was in a pasture, they helped themselves. (Needless to say, Ms. Earhart was escorted back to town.) The residence was designed by renowned architect Douglas H. Thomas, whose firm designed Baltimore’s Belvedere Hotel and the Maryland Club. Today, the home for sale is situated on a peninsula bordered by Meredith Creek and Whitehall Bay. With approximately 26 acres, it has over 10,000 square feet of living space, with five bedrooms, six baths, pool house and in-

law suite. Bought by Liz and Tom Munz in 1993, the mansion has been thoughtfully modernized by Bohl Architects. Its European-style interior was designed by Arlene Critzos of the Annapolis-based Interior Concepts, with some rooms custom painted by Warnock Studios, recognized for their work at the White House. The exterior and interior design features many historic references to the traditions of Georgian architecture in Maryland, explains Bohl. “Thomas took 18th-century architectural style and gave it legitimacy in the 20th century. Holly Beach was an early example of the Colonial Revival. Its parents are the Hammond Harwood House and Ridout House,” he says. Bohl Architects created a master plan for Holly Beach Farm’s restoration and modernization. Renovations included the installation of new infrastructure and transformation of a servant’s wing into living space with spacious kitchen. Fleisher, who has been selling multimillion-dollar properties for over 38 years, says it is unusual to find a home “with spectacular 270-degree scenic vistas, three quarters of a mile of waterfront in addition to its own private beach.” He says it takes a lot to impress him. However, when he first approached the mansion, “It was instant love, no question.” Owners Tom and Liz Munz felt the same way and made an offer on the home the same day they viewed it. With views of the Chesapeake Bay and creek, the land is more than just beautiful, notes Tom. “This is where God goes and spends

his vacation when he’s mad at everyone; you sense something really special here.” Its proximity to major cities is hard to match. “Located only 10 minutes to downtown Annapolis and less than an hour from the nation’s capital, this one-of-a-kind property is unparalleled when it comes to waterfront living,” says Fleisher. Other truly special features include a myriad of formal English gardens featuring a pond, perennials, roses, hydrangeas and woodlands. AH

St. Helena Island Historic Home O f f e r e d a t $ 3 , 3 5 0 , 0 0 0

St. Helena Island is composed of 16 acres of woodlands and landscaped gardens. It is occupied by two families—the Pinkards of Baltimore own 9 ⅓ acres on the south end. On the north end, the Hartmans of Annapolis own 6 ⅔ acres.

One of the region’s rarest estates is on the market: a Palladian-style Federal-period mansion situated on St. Helena Island overlooking Little Round Bay near Annapolis. Listed by Carol Snyder, of Carol Snyder Group of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, for $3.35 million, the residence was built in 1929 by Paul Burnett, a wealthy Baltimore lawyer and insurance executive. With its graceful five-part plan, the residence is modeled after the Homewood Museum on the campus of Johns Hopkins University.

The interior recalls the elegance of the era with marble checkerboard floors, antique chandeliers, a rotunda, eight chimneys, four bedrooms, 4 ½ baths, guesthouse and an unusual office in a restored water tower. Stone pathways traverse approximately 7 rolling acres adorned by collector’s gardens and statuary imported from Italy. Currently owned by Deborah and C. Edward Hartman II of Annapolis, the estate has 1600 feet of waterfront, including 175 feet of sandy beach and a multiple slip pier.

Interior architectural details include black Belgian and white marble floors in the rotunda that are original to the house and classic leaded glass fan windows over the front and back porch doors.

Vol. 7, No. 5 2016 45

The mansion and grounds have undergone an extensive renovation and restoration since the home was purchased in 2001. The wood floors in the living room are wide plank mahogany with holly bowtie and butterfly accents. Another architectural detail in this room is the coffered ceiling.

Islands located so close to Annapolis are virtually nonexistent. “This is a rare piece of property. We don’t live in Maine where there are lots of small islands for sale,” notes Snyder. “A five minute boat ride puts you on land, and in 20 minutes you can be right in downtown Annapolis, depending on the size of the boat.” Snyder believes the island oasis would make a perfect summer retreat and second home for anyone searching for serenity, security and privacy. The Hartmans have lived on the island for over 15 years and, according to Mr. Hartman, its benefits are priceless. “Living out here is a way of life and I probably wouldn’t be here without it,” says the long-time Annapolitan, yachtsman and former owner of the Annapolis Boat Shows. St. Helena is a fabled isle in Annapolis. There have been rumors that a racy club existed with illegal slot machines and that it was a proposed site for an institution for the criminally insane. Juliana Walch Ammon, who moved to the island when she was seven, shares her knowledge. The caretaker’s daughter, Ammon lived on St. Helena from 1938 to 1948. Now 84, she confirms that Burnett, the island’s owner at the time, indeed planned a Gentleman’s Club but it never came to fruition—World War II had erupted and supplies and manpower were limited, she says. He did build a custom hospital that accommodated 22 children with polio. He would invite them at no cost to spend the summer and housed a chef, nurses and aides to care for them in separate quarters. The island estate, a Chesapeake treasure, will continue to grow in value but its price at the moment is stable. For an architecturally significant home on a private island $3.35 million is surprisingly reasonable when compared to similar luxury waterfront properties for sale, says Snyder. AH

Love Travels

to a Nantucket-Style Home on the Severn

By Carol Sorgen Photography by David Burroughs

This Nantucket-style home on the Severn is designed for living on the Chesapeake Bay. Its entire back facade is composed of windows.

The spacious kitchen has a custom island with a nautical-minded beadboard base.

When

a couple from Ohio realized that their two grown sons, who now have families of their own, were making their permanent homes in Maryland, they followed, too. Certainly, they could fly in and visit but there is nothing quite like living in the same town and watching one’s grandkids grow up. Many mature couples put down roots and find it hard to make changes. Or if they do, they downsize. But not this sprightly pair who said goodbye to Cleveland, and hello to Annapolis (at least for six months a year; the other half is spent in Florida). Their main objective was to spend time with the grandchildren “while they still had time to spend with us.” With this in mind, the couple began looking at homes for sale in the Annapolis area. Their wish list seemed reasonable: to be on the water, with a dock for a sailboat, and close enough to downtown Annapolis that they could drive—or even walk—in on a whim.

58

ANNAPOLIS HOME

“But we were frustrated with the resales we saw,” the homeowners say. “There weren’t a lot of options, especially [those] that didn’t require major renovations.” Moving on to Plan B, they began looking at lots for sale. Their realtor introduced them to Annapolis architect Cathy Purple Cherry, who has a special knack for listening to homeowners and helping them find the right property. Purple Cherry, who will soon be opening a second office in Charlottesville, Virginia, talked the couple out of the first property they had been considering, but a year later, when they found a three-quarter-acre waterfront lot on a Severn tributary, they reached out to her again. This time she approved of their choice. “They knew just what they wanted,” says Purple Cherry. “A home to support the reason they had moved to Maryland in the first place ... to welcome their kids and grandkids.”

The circular stair case is created by Finelli Ironworks in Solon, Ohio.

60

ANNAPOLIS HOME

“Nothing formal or cramped” were the guidelines the couple gave Purple Cherry. And nothing like their more traditional Cleveland home, which they describe as “not kid-friendly.” “We gave Cathy free reign,” say the homeowners. And, they happily add, she delivered just what they asked for. The 7500-square-foot Nantucket shingle-style home has four bedrooms—a first-floor master for the homeowners, a bedroom for each couple, and a bunk room for the four grandkids to share. Apart from the master bedroom, the main floor, with its durable Mullican hand-scraped hickory flooring, features an open “gathering room” for relaxing, eating and cooking. Three bedrooms and baths can be found on the second floor, which leads by a circular staircase created by Finelli Ironworks in Solon, Ohio, to a barrel-vaulted boat room made from Douglas fir. The room, inspired by a similar project of Purple Cherry’s, is used as the husband’s study and is a place to “look at the water and daydream.”

The lower level living space includes a “romp room,” where the kids can make as much of a mess as they want, a game room with exercise equipment and pool table, and a walk-out to the deck with its pool and hot tub. From an architectural standpoint, the main design challenge was the relatively small, steeply sloped site, says Purple Cherry. “We had to be very compact in design.” In addition to the informal flow of the living space, the interiors—primarily done in shades of white and gray—were designed to show off the couple’s many collections, which run the gamut from classic 19th-century English art to 20th-century contemporary and glass art. The gentleman of the house is also a serious wine collector and has a fully stocked wine room, while his wife has her own collections such as small enamels and teapots. The chef ’s kitchen, with coffered ceiling, granite countertops and custom cabinetry by C A Miller Custom Woodworking in Burton, Ohio, was built by Amish craftsmen. (They were driven to the

home site since their culture prohibits modern transportation.) The kitchen is a welcoming spot for the couple, who are both vegan and enjoy preparing most of their meals at home. The only feature the couple might have reconsidered adding to the house is an elevator, as they envision aging in place here. Otherwise, the home does just what it was intended to do—bring the entire family together as often as possible for as long as possible. “It’s a different atmosphere when you have the time to spend with each other,” they say. Straight Up on Dining Out

Shore Dining at The Narrows

By Christine Fillat If you want to give your houseguests a taste of the Eastern Shore consider The Narrows in Grasonville. This waterfront restaurant is pretty and open with a relaxing vibe. Tables line up on the enclosed porch for a never-ending show outside. The panorama is of marine traffic: sailboats and working boats as they motor through the narrow waterway connecting the Chester River to the north and the Eastern Bay to the south. This is a perfectly delightful setting for meeting up with friends and sharing a repast of small plates and cocktails. Jerry Dammeyer, general manager of The Narrows since 1983, says the best time to dine at The Narrows is “probably when

66

ANNAPOLIS HOME

you’re hungry.” If the weather is nice, you will want to be outside, Dammeyer says. “But when it’s less than super nice out, too hot or too cold, a lot of people come here.” “As the area has changed,” says Dammeyer, “we’ve had to adapt. We remodeled 1 ½ years ago to reflect a happy hour bar crowd, with more casual dining, an inexpensive happy hour burger, lamb chops and reduced drink prices.” On a recent mid-week dinner, the meal my dinner guest and I had was made up of some hits and a couple of misses. Crab Pizza came

photography Courtesy of the narrows restaurant

with a light, crispy crust and plenty of cheesy lump crab meat. It was completely satisfying. If only the basic simplicity of the pizza had carried over to the Oysters Rockefeller where the oyster was hidden under its mound of greens, with a smattering of runny hollandaise. Harder still to find was the promised bacon. This trend of overabundance repeated in the meal. Baked Rockfish was covered with edamame, corn and tomato succotash. Sitting upon several large smashed red potatoes, the local fish was strangely overcooked on the edges and slightly undercooked in the center. The component parts did not seem to complement one another. The special Soft Shell Crab was heavily inundated with a heap of tepid frizzled onions. The delicate flavors of this local specialty were lost in a doughy and undercooked batter. This was disappointing to say the least. The Narrows does, however, have winners on its menu. Flavorful and abundant in crab meat, the Cream of Crab Soup, with a generous pour of sherry, was excellent and something we wanted more of. Also good was the wedge salad, with its light blue cheese dressing. Homemade fresh peach shortcake a la mode ended the meal on an upbeat. Even with the missteps of a couple of the dishes we tried, The Narrows is a place worth visiting. The dining room is inviting, the staff is friendly and the view is what life in the Delmarva Peninsula is all about. AH

CONTEMPORARY DESIGN, TIMELESS COMFORT Throughout our history, Loewen has delivered an unrivaled aesthetic that both complements and inspires changes in architectural trends. The timeless comfort that radiates from our Douglas Fir and Mahogany windows and doors provides the perfect contrast of warmth to contemporary design, while the ever-changing patinas of our copper and bronze clad products offer rich, deep textures that are both contemporary and future-facing in their own right. We craft our windows and doors with aesthetic value that endures — just like the long-lasting performance of all our products. We look forward to helping you realize your vision.
