PUBLISHERS’ LETTER The Power of Interior Design In these pages of Annapolis Home, you will find stories about interior design’s power to calm the spirits, lift the mood, or encourage conversation. Our cover story, about a renovated pool house with stone fireplace and rough-hewn beams, reveals how a subtle alchemy is created by unusual combinations of woods, minerals and matter that enchant. In subsequent pages, you’ll see how an office becomes a gallery hung with vintage photographs that intrigue visitors with City Dock, Annapolis their jet-setting scenes in rich brilliant colors. Read on to meet a couple on the South River who worked with designers able to manipulate the strengths of interior design, who are in tune with the perfect “detail,” and not afraid of color, painting two bathrooms a bold tangerine. Our Design Talk advises on how to wield red effectively to awaken a room and all who enter. There is much more here to indulge in, including the decor of a yacht docked in an Annapolis port. So, when your day opens up or in the lamplit hours of a fall evening, put your feet up, enjoy your home and browse away. Enjoy,

British sculptor Rachel Whiteread (b. 1963) has achieved international recognition for her massive sculptures that are recasts of domestic interiors. This includes casts of entire rooms in which she creates solid forms out of negative space. The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. presents the first comprehensive survey her work, bringing together roughly 100 objects from the course of Whiteread’s 30-year career. The exhibition includes drawings, photographs, and architecturescaled sculptures. This is an exhibition I highly recommend. It is a rare chance to see her body of work, particularly her large architectural casts. The show opens September 15 and runs through January 13, 2018. To learn more, visit nga.gov.

The Mitchell Gallery at St. John’s College is presenting an exhibition by German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528), one of the most significant artists in the history of art. The exhibition includes 30 woodblock prints and engravings with subjects encompassing narratives of Old and New Testaments, mythology, portraits, and images of saints. The exhibition also contains works by some of Dürer’s contemporaries. The exhibition runs through October 14, 2018. For gallery hours, visit sjc.edu/annapolis/mitchell-gallery.

In celebration of the “Year of Frederick Douglass,” the Douglass Reading Room at the Banneker-Douglass Museum in Annapolis features books written by and about Frederick Douglass and other influential African American authors. Douglass escaped slavery in Maryland and became a national abolitionist leader. He is regarded as one of the great orators of all time. The exhibit also includes works by important artists Elizabeth Catlett and Romare Bearden. The exhibit runs until February 28, 2019. For more information, visit bdmuseum. maryland.gov.

The clients that own an English manor home on rolling farmland in rural Maryland turned to Interior Concepts for help with its interior design. They also needed a design vision for the accessory buildings on their property. In particular, they wanted to remodel the adjacent pool house so it could serve as a guesthouse for visiting family, friends and entertaining. The design concept was driven by the structure’s rustic stone exterior architecture and its need to accommodate guests, notes Arlene Critzos, founder of the Annapolis-based Interior Concepts. Pennsylvania bluestone floors, fieldstone fireplace, rough-hewn beams and tongue-in-groove ceiling, all are key components to this pool house. It can function as a small house if needed with two living rooms, a new kitchen, upstairs sleeping loft, and porch leading to the pool. The couple’s notes to Critzos and senior residential designer Andrea Blamphin were to keep the decor “relaxed,” with subtle “neutral and organic” colors in creams with touches of mulberry and blue tones. Because the structure would be used frequently by family

and friends, the interior had to be both inviting and accommodating. “The interior portrays casual comfort with total ease of maintenance. The kitchen facilities can handle large parties and catered functions. The dining table likewise can handle a small or large group. To accomplish a clean simple “textural interior”, they focused on a vernacular mix of natural elements and pure materials. “We chose to use simple linens and cottons as fabrics. We chose warm woods with a touch of some new industrial accessories and furnishings. We mixed metal, wood and stone and one of a kind pieces,” says Critzos. One example is the custom-designed and custompainted red twig chandelier that draws the eye upward toward the 18-foot peaked ceiling, also adding a splash of color in an unexpected way. “The twig chandelier offered a feel of organic whimsy, however the deep terracotta coloring gave it the weight it needed in the

room. They can be customized to multiple sizes so we could ensure the correct scale,” says Critzos. Another conversation-starting piece is the Tibetan door that acts as a decorative element and is hung over the fireplace. Critzos explains that when working with strong artifacts and stone, “it is more effective to use architectural fragments as art. A framed painting above the mantle would have been lost in the strength of the volume and the texture.” She adds that when creating a rustic retreat such as this, scale and a mindful combination of finishes and materials are all-important. “The key is bringing exterior organic materials into the interior finishes. If you do not do that there is not harmony between the inside and the out. So, for example, if the walls on the fireplace were all drywall and the floors were ceramic tile it would feel very different.”
As part of the renovation, Bayview Builders fashioned a curving stair leading to a sleeping loft, installing reclaimed timber beams to support the 18-foot ceiling.
The interior, which has an eclectic mix of old and new, includes a kitchen with stainless steel appliances.
Like the couple, Blamphin notes many homeowners today are drawn to interiors that incorporate natural and recycled objects and collectibles. “The line keeps getting pushed in terms of what can go together,” she says. “You can look to the European influence, where it’s not at all unusual to mix wonderful old architecture with modern furniture, taking the rustic elements such as wood, plaster, and stone and combining them with the current furniture fashion to bring the interior into the present.” The newly added kitchen follows that trend by sporting a sleek industrial design with marble counters, metal lighting fixtures, and stainless Viking appliances. When the weather is nice, the couple prepares meals in the outdoor kitchen for family and friends. The furniture is an all-weather rattan, which won’t distress through the seasons, complemented by striped ticking upholstery. Antique rockers and benches encourage visitors to breathe deeply and experience the scenery. The heavily treed farmland property provides an ever-shifting natural landscape, “almost like a work of art itself,” says Blamphin. Since there are no nearby neighbors, the couple

is able to leave the many windows open to take advantage of the bright light and country breezes that stream in. Immaterial elements such as sunshine, breezes and views are all a part of the design equation. For example, windows were strategically placed to capture special vignettes, notes Critzos. “As you look through the kitchen area, it purposely is a large expanse of glass. The view beyond is a beautiful horse paddock with white horses lingering in the field.” Upon reflection, there is a subtle alchemy to this design. The many aesthetic combinations, perhaps because they are impossible to duplicate, transcend to awaken the senses and make these rooms feel fresh and alive. AH

Winning the Kentucky Derby is a once in a lifetime occasion. However, when this prizewinning horseman isn’t checking on his racehorses in northern Baltimore County, you’re more than likely to find him on his brand-new 78' Fleming yacht aptly named On Leave. Working closely with interior designer Christine Roney, owner of Yacht Interiors of Annapolis, and project manager Michael Schoelkopf of Edgewater, Maryland-based Burr Yacht Sales, the owner and his wife have created a floating home that could win a few trophies itself. The casual blue and white color palette the owners are partial to is a nod to the nautical without being trite. “Relaxing comfort is what we were going for,” says Roney, who worked with the owners on their previous 65' Fleming. The couple live on their yacht when visiting Florida. “We were looking for more room as our family expands with grandchildren,” says the owner. On the California deck, the Duralee fabric with Sunbrella contrasting welting gives a nautical roping feel without being overly dramatic. “The fabric is comfortable and easy to clean and maintain,” says Roney. “Providing fabrics that can take the sun beating down on the upholstery at all times of the day and year is important so they don’t fade quickly.” In the main salon, Ralph Lauren’s nautical blue and white Surf Break Stripe covers seat cushions that rest on boards with high-density foam and webbing for both comfort and easy drainage. Under the cushions is plenty of accessible storage space. There is space for a flat

screen in the main salon and for family photos displaying his beloved horses in action. The 1" Ocean Air wood blinds are topped with valances using a natural Sunbrella with blue welting to continue the nautical theme, as well as to hide the blinds when they’re not in use. The owner designed the layout for the salon for his personal use. His own Scalamandre custom-designed chair in a geometric Duralee pattern plays off the blue and white stripes without competing. Accent pillows combine both solid blues with a seashorethemed print livened with lobsters, coral, shells, seahorses and crabs. “The two patterns, on top of the classic blue and white stripe upholstery, complete the Chesapeake Bay nautical theme, which allows the owners to cruise north for the summer and south for the winters, feeling comfortable and at home no matter where they are,” says Roney. What truly makes On Leave a home is the easy way that equestrian-themed accessories blend in with the nautical. The family’s passion shines forth: a sense of adventure on land and sea and a respect for greater forces. AH

TOP REALTORS GETTING YOU R HOME RE ADY T O S E L L: WHAT YOU N E E D T O KNOW
We asked leading real estate specialists what are the most important things that a homeowner must know and do to sell their home as quickly as possible. At right you will find sound advice from professionals with years of experience and, most importantly, success in the field. 7402 Kent Point Road, Stevensville The Reynolds|Fettig Group
Y
our home must be appropriately priced and in pristine condition. Today’s buyers are very savvy. They watch the market closely and are astute with current trends and property valuation. You should consider improvements that are affordable and that coincide with the market expectations in that price point. Ideally buyers are looking for updated kitchens, baths and a neutral décor. Definitely remove all clutter and personal photos, put all extra items such as oversized and outdated furniture in storage, use fresh paint in neutral trendy colors, clean windows and remove screens for more light. Clean up the outside with fresh mulch and flowers. Always get professional photos taken. Remember, a buyer’s first impression is on-line. The younger buyers cannot see past a homeowner’s décor. Buyers notice the negative first so make it a positive first impression!
S
elling a home “as-is” in today’s market is risky. Buyers today focus on condition and do not want to take on major projects. Even if the buyers aren’t in love with a specific tile choice, if it’s neutral, inviting and newly completed they are willing to move forward with a purchase. If they are forced to make updates immediately, they want a significant reduction on the price of the home to a number well below market. The most important things a seller can do to prepare their home to sell quickly is to be open to the suggestions of a qualified stager. The buyers in today’s market are hyper-focused on how a home makes them feel, both online and in person. Therefore, sellers must be willing to address paint colors, lighting and furniture placement to ensure the photographs and in-person impression create the right feeling to appeal to today’s buyers. They must create a space where the buyers can envision themselves living and creating memories with their families and friends.
Some not-so-costly projects that can bring value to the home are replacing all carpet with new or preferably hardwood floors, a new kitchen counter, replacing the windows, front door and updated garage door. A fresh coat of neutral paint can add thousands of dollars in value. Think clean inside and out. You have just one chance to make that first impression!

T
he difference between a home that lingers on the market for months and one that receives an offer the day it is listed could be something so simple, yet so vital— staging. While it is possible to sell a home “as is,” one that is deliberately staged can maximize its appeal and have the home off the market in no time. When you stage your house, it attracts more potential buyers. Most buyers shop for homes online these days, so the visual presentation of a home has to be 100 percent. Data shows that on average a home that is staged brings a higher sales price and a quicker contract than one that is not staged. Bring each room back to its original purpose to show off your square footage and create balance in each space. If your home is in need of paint, use colors to neutralize aesthetics or if carpet replacements are needed due to pet stains—go ahead and make those changes. If the changes are more substantial—bathroom or kitchen updates—consider that your preferences may not match those of potential buyers.

W
hen it comes to marketing and selling waterfront properties preparation can vary. In general, improving and maximizing the view is usually the most important. Consult with an good arborist to determine if any trees can be removed or limbed up to improve the view. Buyers usually can’t envision what a view could look like, and some buyers are intimidated by what can or can’t be done inside the critical area. Prior to photography, have the windows professionally cleaned. Other recommendations: If your pier is older, have it power washed and stained. Consider outdoor staging to help buyers envision how they will be able to enjoy the best parts of your outdoor spaces and waterfront. Service boat-lifts and have boats detailed. Some buyers will assume deferred maintenance on boats equates to deferred maintenance on the home.
P
ricing needs to match property condition. Sellers should address deferred maintenance items and freshen up the home that they are preparing for the market. The goal should be to position the home for a buyer’s discerning eyes while minimizing potential red flags that a home inspector may note. We have found that small enhancements can pay large dividends and limit time on the market. Things like fresh paint, new landscaping, updated fixtures and flooring can increase a seller’s net while reducing time on the market without the upfront expense of a large overhaul. By removing family photos and other personalized items, buyers can better see themselves, instead of the seller, in a home. Further, a seller should begin to see their home as a commodity, thereby chipping away at some of the difficult-to-shed emotionalism that a loving seller possesses. Although a home may have significant emotional value to the seller, this doesn’t translate into financial value in the market. Emotional value can work against the well-informed solid market data provided, and result in a seller insisting on unrealistic pricing. If this is not overcome, it can negatively impact a seller’s ability to sell.

The art one sees in most offices is uninspired and safe. Landscape paintings are careful not to offend, pictures of flower-filled vases never demand a second look, or prints of hounds leaping fences in the English countryside are pleasant in a distant kind of way. And what about the ubiquitous paintings or photographs of the Chesapeake Bay sunset—often beautiful but alas, a cliché. However, boring art is not necessary. When used effectively, art can enliven an office, express a company’s personality, and even affect a client’s mood. ProMD Health founder Dr. George Gavrila understands that the office is a special visual sphere, one that may communicate through color, form, subject, and space. Art in the office is an opportunity to connect nonverbally, to help buoy up a person’s mind and soul, believes Gavrila, whose firm specializes in integrative and anti-aging medical care. With art’s many benefits in mind, Gavrila chose to transform his Annapolis office by turning it essentially into a gallery featuring professional striking vintage photography by Slim Aarons (1916-2006). A former wartime photographer in the Army for the military magazine Yank, Aarons covered and documented the frontlines during World War II, where he won a purple heart. After the war, he needed catharsis to put the bombed-out beaches, casualties, and war-torn lands behind him. He moved to California and began photographing “attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places,” he has said famously. He went on to publish his work in Life, Town & Country, and Holiday from the 1950s through the 1970s.
Vol. 9, No. 5 2018 51

“He made it his mission to capture moments of beauty and natural happiness in busy lives,” notes Gavrila, who was drawn to Aarons’ evocative subjects and scenes that were not staged or styled. “I swapped boring and common with more inviting and engaging work,” he says. In the front waiting area, the photograph on the right depicts a socialite and her son in front of their Grecian temple pool on an ethereal summer day on their oceanfront estate in Palm Beach. In the portrait on the left, three friends drink champagne in their swimsuits outside their hotel in Cannes. ProMD Health’s central hallway has become a gallery, as has each treatment room. Clients stroll past many works by Aarons, including Poolside Gossip. The setting is the Palm Springs home of business magnate Edgar J. Kaufmann, designed by modernist architect Richard Neutra. midriffs lounge as a friend (an actress) hurries towards them with a drink. Gavrila, who discovered Aarons when browsing through a coffee table book of his photographs, admires this photographer’s technical finesse, his ability to manipulate light to convey a special joy de vivre. In scenes of spontaneous grace, his subjects seem to have no worries or have pushed them aside for a few glorious moments. This aligns with ProMD Health’s mission— to help those who come for treatment to pause and leave the office more confident and to enjoy life. Gavrila may be on to something. Perhaps fine art and photography can indeed be part of a successful treatment. Photographing Hollywood’s jet set for years certainly had a positive effect on Slim Aarons, who survived a bloody war to travel the world and almost obsessively surround himself with beauty, as if it could heal him. It worked for quite a while. He died at the age of 89. AH

America’s finest homes are being built on our foundations. Maybe it’s because Superior Walls is the leader in residential precast foundation systems. ANNAPOLIS HOME
The great room opens to views of the South River.
Those purchasing a waterfront home know that sometimes one must seize the moment. This is the case of a couple that bought a one-story 1950s home on a tributary of the South River in Annapolis in 2008. Its charms were submerged, to be sure, but the breeze was fresh and location superb. They lived there for five years until the homeowner knew exactly what she wanted—a French Country-style home, a waterfront gathering place to entertain friends and live comfortably. “The whole property just has a great vibe to it, a great feeling,” she said, “And this place had really good karma, it just didn’t have good bones.” Intending to build on that good karma, she brought in Fred Sieracki, Annapolis architect, to bring her ideas to life. Sieracki has built and remodeled many waterfront homes in the historic district and throughout Annapolis. French Country, in his book, is a little unusual for our area. However, a good architect is inventive. “It’s a modern house and it has a lot of glass, but her taste is old European,” says Sieracki. “We combined the two to create a modern take on old classics.” While the South River house can be accessed by road, the command entrance is by water. This is where the design of the house can really be seen. A massive decorative center gable makes a defining statement. “We needed a large-scale element that could read from a distance,” reflects Sieracki. He explains that the central gable ties together the home’s components: the great room, the master bedroom wing, and the guest wing.
This new home has all the essential elements of French Country-style, with its stucco and stone exterior, interior and exterior beam work, and rusticated surfaces on floors, countertops and cabinetry. There are copper details in roofing and in the kitchen. The house has a hip roof and different rooms have their own roof treatment. Inside the octagonal parlor is an extensive collection of Louis VI furnishngs. From the custom mahogany front door to the automated screenedin porch, every detail in the house is carefully considered and artfully realized, a testament to the determined vision of the homeowner and mastery of David Carlisle of Bayview Builders. While serving as the fulltime project manager, Carlisle assisted the homeowner with material selections and physically labored on the house. The most labor-intensive part of building the house was quite possibly when the team placed the giant reclaimed timbers into the 22-foot high ceiling defining the great room. “We had to set that one in the peak by hand and that was not fun. It was mostly getting scaffolding set up and then putting it in place and having enough guys to physically lift it,” says Carlisle. “I think we had six or eight guys working that weekend.” The homeowners are not the only ones who are happy. There are four rescue cats in this residence. And they get their own place of honor. The door knobs in the mud room sport portraits of all of the couple’s cats, past and present. It is not unusual for a feline to be found napping on one of the generous windowsills in the house, the girth of the heftiest cat having served as the standard windowsill measurement.
Vol. 9, No. 5 2018 59
Kitchen designer Joni Zimmerman integrated many French-country details into the kitchen, including copper range hood, arches and beaded wainscot panels for the kitchen island.
The home’s color scheme, interior and exterior, was chosen with the assistance of master colorist Karen Fazekas. Joni Zimmerman of Design Solutions in Annapolis designed the kitchen with convenience and European grace in mind. “Various elements of French Country details were incorporated into the design—the metal grills at the cabinets and desk area, beaded wainscot panels, arches and colors.” She explains that the desk area was important because the owner likes to showcase pictures of friends on her computer monitor, especially when they are visiting. This house likes to party. In the three years since it’s been built, the couple has hosted two weddings, a bachelorette weekend, and numerous house parties. There’s a man cave with three television screens, a pool table, and a wine cellar. There’s a female version of the man cave, a third-floor idyll replete with craft area, comfy couches, and a Juliette balcony. And then there’s the guest wing. The possibilities are endless. AH

All In For Red the great fashion designer bill blass famously advises,
“When in doubt, wear red!” by julie bass . photography by geoffrey hodgdon
Red is dramatic. It’s vibrant. It’s charismatic. Red…. Is…. Confidence. Indeed, it takes a certain amount of courage to use red in home décor, especially on the walls. Most people are somewhat intimidated to take that bold step, so to add energy and visual interest, but keep risk to a minimum, I sometimes suggest red be used sparingly as an accent. It’s perfect as a pop of color to move your eye around the room. That might be a splash of red on the inside of a bookcase or a striking accessory such as a lamp, pillow or piece of art for just the right punch. But this year Benjamin Moore is all in for red, proudly announcing its color of the year for 2018 is Caliente –AF290, and I couldn’t be more inspired to step out with color in a big way. This red is warm, enveloping and full of personality. And when used as wall color, the results can be a show stopping space that is inviting and full of life.

What, besides a great scarlet hue on the walls, makes a room successful? How do you keep it from becoming too intense? You need to add layers and give the red a chance to step back just enough. Here, in this elegant living room, drapery in muted shades of rose and blue/gray soften the edges. A silk rug in silvery blue grounds the space with an appealing glow, while neutral upholstery adds calm and contrast. Metallic gold accents complete a triadic harmony of red, blue and yellow (gold) equally spaced apart on the color wheel. Finally, these walls were treated with a lime wash for a subtle aged look. All of these elements combined allows the paint be the star, but not in a way that is overwhelming. So, if you have a jewel box of a room just waiting for some drama, dare to be bold and dress it in red! AH

AHM interviewed José-Luis Novo after his recent trip to Thailand guest conducting the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, one of many international engagements. We took his photo after he returned from the Eastern Music Festival in Greensboro, North Carolina, where he holds the position of Resident Conductor.
At Home with Annapolis Symphony Conductor José-Luis Novo By Kymberly Taylor Photography by Tony J. Lewis
“What makes a really great performance is when the pacing is perfect and the timing is perfect…that’s the work…” - José-Luis Novo Annapolis Home caught up with José-Luis Novo, the music director and conductor of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra. Because of his low-key demeanor offstage, you would never know about his stellar path. Born in Valladolid, Spain, he excelled as a young musician, obtaining the degree of Profesor Superior de Violín with honors in solfege, harmony, and violin. He arrived in the United States in 1988 as a Fulbright Scholar at Yale University, earning two masters degrees in music and, among other things, a master’s in orchestral conducting at the Cleveland Institute of Music.
to lead in every sense of the word. His musicians follow, reaching evernew artistic altitudes, as the ASO’s new season reveals. But, what is his real life like?
There is so much more to know about Novo. He is a devoted educator of young musicians; collaborates with acclaimed guest artists worldwide and, importantly, possesses a relentless vision. Recently, The Baltimore Sun writes “the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra unleashed a nasty, unremittingly exciting Shostakovich 10th that showed off the strengths of the ensemble that already has been reconfigured during Novo’s brief tenure.”
In fact, during their search, Lori would bring her flute along and play in different rooms; José-Luis would go to the farthest room to listen sometimes going so far as to stand in the bushes in neighboring yards. José-Luis recalls that their realtor said “I have been in this business many years and have never seen a couple try out a house like this.”
And this brings us to another side of Novo. Here is a man able to float a long-limbed rhapsody just above the audience, summon majesty from horns, coax from an oboe soloist an immaculate shape. To invoke such instrumental eloquence, José-Luis connects strongly with his orchestra
70
ANNAPOLIS HOME
José-Luis lives in an elegant three-story town home in Annapolis with his wife, Lori, a flute player, and four-year old son, who plays the violin and harmonica. It is a home made for artistic co-creation, and one this musical couple chose carefully—each needs total silence to practice their respective arts.
And, it is here, in a lower-story office so quiet one can hear the score for Petrushka float to the floor, where José-Luis pours over music and recordings. Internalizing and re-analyzing notes, he may spend weeks on a performance, experimenting with and shaping sound, “until it comes into my arms” he says, until it is a symphony.
How did you get started on your journey?
What happens when you are on stage?
I remember being quite young, about five or six years old and I was already moving my arms because I was listening to an orchestra and trying to shape the sound…I was physically reacting to what I was hearing.
I get completely focused on the music…. I am not paying attention to anything else, just the music. For me, the moment I begin, the world can fall apart but I will finish the music.
Then I started studying music. I wasn’t sure if conducting was going to be monetary or even possible, so I focused on the violin. I had some opportunities to start conducting and it appeared more clearly I would play the violin and sort of do that too. And then conducting took over. To me it feels even more natural than playing the violin. Playing the violin, I have to work very hard on the technique and learning and practicing. With conducting I study the music mentally and internalize it. It all happens so much more naturally. I just think about it and it comes into my arms.
What is your process? Does it all happen in your study at home? I don’t practice in front of the mirror or do those kinds of things that people think…What you do is you internalize the artwork and then you let it happen…I go through the score and refresh myself, but I do look through the details and rethink things and reanalyze. You need to know how the different sections of the piece relate to each other and how you put everything together. And, how the pacing of things is going to happen, which is very important in music. It is not really technically the notes but how the notes happen in the space and in time.
What makes a truly great performance? What makes a really great performance is when the pacing is perfect, and the timing is perfect…that’s the work, what you have to really think about. The moments where the music becomes tenser, or there is more struggle and where there is more relaxation, and how those sections relate to each other. You have to create the tension so that you arrive at a climax and then it resolves and then everyone relaxes.
Everyone is always fascinated with the conductor, as the leader of the orchestra. Can you help demystify it? It is because they don’t know what we do…. They see our arms and it’s kind of abstract…but the conductor influences a great deal how the musicians play, whether you want to realize that or not. Factors can influence the orchestra negatively, too. It is something you cannot avoid. When you have someone in a leadership position, it affects everyone, whether you lead well or whether you don’t…and its unfolding before the eyes of everyone else.
What do you do on a daily basis to make a performance great on opening night? I get a lot of information in rehearsal…in the first week I run through the whole repertoire. I think it is very important both for me and for the orchestra to see how much work we have before the performance. I am pretty religious about it because if not you can waste a lot of time…. Musicians are very smart people, so you have to give them the information they need to fix whatever they need to fix on their own. And I trust them to do that. And you deal with the human component of every musician. You have to make sure that your presence is positive enough that you are bringing out the best in each person because if you get into a negative wave, you really get in the way of things happening.
What is your biggest challenge? It is to make sure you keep reinventing yourself, so you keep being the source of inspiration that everyone expects you to be. You have to make sure you don’t fall into an automatic pilot pattern because that is really the end of you as a leader…. The most important thing is keeping yourself open to change and to improve whatever you need to improve to get better.
Variation figures prominently into your new season, which opens October 5-6. Why did you introduce film into some performances? Film crosses your sensorial experiences and makes you think more carefully about how one art form influences another. I wanted to emphasize how important the music and the way film used to be. In the beginning there was no sound. People have forgotten it was performed live. I want to bring back that fact so we understand better now what a soundtrack is today and how spoiled we are now that everything is worked out ahead of time. But at the time it was performed live, it was far from being perfect. With computer programs today you almost have nothing to do. We need to remind ourselves where we have come from, so we understand better where we are going. AH
