We spend many days over the course of a month reviewing and visiting design projects before we select what we believe will be most exciting for our readers and what best showcases the leading talent, aesthetic, and lifestyle of Chesapeake Bay living at its finest. You will discover in this issue exceptional interior design, architecture, and custom building. Take the time to appreciate the fine talent of these professionals, from their color selections, fabrics, architectural details, and more. In addition to the feature interior design and architectural stories, we conceived a new section, "My Favorite Room," and invited three designers to share one of their favorite recent design projects with us. The three offer very different styles, and they are all our favorites. Along with our home focus, we also are committed to promoting the arts and historic preservation in Annapolis. With this purpose at the forefront, we are pleased to join Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in celebrating its 40th Anniversary. Read our story on this institution which greatly enriches the culture of the city. We may live in a digital age, but there is no substitute for the power of the live arts. When we do restaurant reviews, we visit anonymously to ensure we are not receiving special treatment. Nevertheless, we felt that Maydan in Washington, D.C. was truly a treat. Read our review and, if it sounds enticing, book your reservation for an unusual dining experience. We hope you enjoy this issue as much as we enjoyed putting it all together.

African American history is a history that touches all of us. Having started public school in the South during a time when segregated schools were being contested and dismantled, I certainly feel that way. This history is American history, and it is the mission of the Banneker-Douglass Museum in Annapolis to preserve and present this history. BannekerDouglass, the State’s official museum of African American History, is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture with the theme “We Rise, Preserving Maryland’s African American Heritage.” The culminating event will be a fundraising Gala on Saturday evening, November 2, 2019. The evening will include spoken word poetry, live music, a scotch bar, and more. For tickets and sponsorship information, visit bdmuseum.maryland.gov.

2

Another key charitable event also seeks to preserve history—the history of Annapolis’s colonial architecture. That is the mission of Historic Annapolis. On Thursday, September 26, 2019, Historic Annapolis will host Blazers, Bourbon and Cigars, an evening for “gentleman” that takes place in the beautiful Paca Gardens. In this age of creative gender bending, it might seem outdated to host (mostly) separate men’s and women’s events. (The annual Paca Girlfriend’s Party takes place in the summer.) It’s not. Men who attend this event, including myself, have a great time dressing up and hanging out for a few hours with their colleagues and friends. It’s a spirited and fun evening for an important cause. For tickets, visit annapolis.org.

3

People come from all over the country, and even the world, to see the most significant exhibitions at the National Gallery of Art. We only have to drive fifty minutes or so. I have met people who have lived in Maryland their whole lives and never set foot in the Gallery. Some people don’t have the artistic and historical exposure or background to feel inclined to visit. The best way to get the exposure is just to go and walk in the door. It’s free. A great exhibition to see is “Verrocchio: Sculptor and Painter of Renaissance Florence.” It’s extremely rare to see an exhibition of Italian 15th-century sculpture in this country—especially of Verrocchio’s caliber. This was a time when the advanced sculptors were learning to depict figures in the round reaching out into space. The show opens September 15 and runs through January 12, 2022.

4

On the music front, see the schedule of Annapolis Symphony’s upcoming concerts on page 88 in this magazine. In September you can also hear the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra perform “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back” (September 19-21) followed by “Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 4” (September 27-29). For tickets to the ASO and the BSO, visit annapolissymphony.org and bsomusic.org.

Robert Haywood has a Ph.D. in art and architecture history from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. His book, Allan Kaprow and Claes Oldenburg: Art, Happenings and Cultural Politics, is out now from Yale University Press, London. To order, visit yalebooks.com. (Top Left) A portrait of Harriet Tubman (ca. 1820-1913). Tubman, herself an escaped slave, helped hundreds of slaves escape the South by means of the Underground Railroad.

ROOM

We invited three seasoned interior designers to select a room they had recently created that is among their favorites. It’s good training for your eye and aesthetic appreciation to spend time looking at how each of these designers has conceived each room. Their styles are different, each room evokes different historical references, and each has a different mood and atmosphere. What they share is that all the designers are highly attuned to how colors, textures, shapes, materials, and light affect our feeling and experience in space. - Robert Haywood

M A RY D O U G L A S D RY S D A L E One of my favorite gestures in creating interiors is to combine traditional interior architectural features with a sense of today, always trying to combine practical usage with a fresh sense of beauty. This room is classically proportioned and beautifully glazed in my favorite shade of blue. Painted paneling creates a strong background. All is set off by a warm white.” Drysdale Design Associates, marydouglasdrysdale.com, Washington DC Photographer: John Cole

ARLENE CRITZOS I love this beautiful European Great Room because it encapsulates so much feeling and so many functions at once, due to its scale. Four separate areas (two are shown) bring multiple living functions together—television watching, conversational seating, music (piano) and game playing. Two unique matching English cabinets that stand 12' tall add stature to the room. The fireplace is European walnut and was purchased in England and refurbished. All ceilings are two-story with detailed plaster panels which further enhance the ceiling vistas.” Interior Concepts, Inc., interiorconceptsinc.com, Annapolis, Maryland Photographer: Gordon Beall

K R I ST I N P E A K E This particular project is one of my favorite rooms because it has layers of function. I personally like a relaxed, comfortable, well-edited space. This room gives me all of that. Shiplap, comfort, texture, balance, and serenity. This space resonates: ‘It’s a feeling of home, not just a beautiful room.’” Kristin Peake Interiors, kristinpeakeinteriors.com, Rockville, Maryland | Photographer: Stacy Zarin Goldberg

ROW HOUSE RENOVATION IN ADAMS MORGAN BY ELIZABETH HEUBECK PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAUL BURK

ANNAPOLIS HOME

This row house, built in the early 1900s, once had many small rooms as was the style of the era. Original brick and historic elements remain, but the space exudes modernity.

The original narrow staircase was removed and a new one built that is contemporary yet respectful of the scale of the home.

I

n the hip, diverse Washington, D.C. neighborhood of Adams Morgan, early-twentiethcentury townhouses—some brightly painted or featuring quirky murals—house independent businesses, yoga studios, and families. One such family called Adams Morgan home for more than a decade before they started occupying the space in a way that truly suited their lifestyle.

“How this couple wanted to live, and how they were able to live, were out of sync,” says Alan Dynerman, a Washington, D.C.-based architect. He should know. Dynerman’s relationship with the couple isn’t strictly professional. In addition to serving as principal architect for the extensive renovation of the couple’s home, Dynerman also considers his clients good friends. Over the years, he has enjoyed several Passover dinners at their house—along with upwards of 20-plus other guests in one sitting. He’s also been present at parties the couple has hosted over the years. And while he has seen first-hand what gracious hosts the couple is, Dynerman also recognizes that the space in which they were entertaining was suboptimal for that purpose, and for their lifestyle in general. It’s an all-too-familiar story for modern-day families living in houses built in, and for, another era. In the early 1900s, row houses were constructed in a way that allowed them to hold heat in during the wintertime. Hence the reason for several smaller rooms, many of which contained fireplaces. This architectural strategy worked from a functional perspective; but design-wise, it resulted in homes being “chopped up” into multiple rooms—quite the opposite of the open and light-filled floor plan that families tend to desire today. Vol. 10, No. 5 2019 47

The home of Dynerman’s clients was no exception. Prior to renovation, the early-1900s-era home was unmistakably quaint and cozy. But it also felt dark. Heavy. Chopped up. Somewhat cluttered. To be fair, they do have kids. “They wanted a home that was more open, and had more light,” Dynerman says. The couple also longed for their kitchen to be more engaged as a public space, rather than the closed-off servant space for which it was originally designed. Dynerman summed up the challenge inherent to the renovation this way: “How could we make something modern inside something traditional, and allow those two sensibilities not simply to co-exist, but to work together?” Together, the architect and his clients figured it out. “Very often, it’s hard for clients to suspend disbelief, to seriously consider ideas that they didn’t come up with themselves,” Dymerman says. That wasn’t the case with these clients. “They were able to talk about and engage ideas from the very start,” he observes. Gaining his friends-turned-clients’ trust gave Dynerman the green light to dive into the renovation. But that wasn’t the end of the challenges. Providing as few distractions as possible to the family’s lifestyle during the 14-month renovation came next. Gutting the home would have prolonged the renovation and further disrupted the family’s living situation. They chose against it. “I’m always trying to find ways to limit the work but not limit its scope,” Dynerman says. It also helped that the family was able to temporarily move to a small basement apartment in their townhouse during the project. A few key decisions in the renovation resulted in significant differences. Partitions dividing rooms were removed. So too was the old staircase, and a new one added, transforming the pre-existing space into a room for everyday use. Big windows in the dining room became doors leading to the outside. The rear wall of the kitchen, now all glass, allows natural light to filter into the home. The two fireplaces remain as welcome reminders of the past. When they regained access to their entire townhouse, the family was greeted with a living space that exudes modernity: bright, light-filled, open, and inviting. This home, respectfully renovated, stands ready for another generation of use. AH

Rec Center Revision

ON COMPROMISE STREET

A 10-foot, red lacquered bench, designed by Simply Wesley, and large-scaled coastal photographs provide a focal point in the foyer.

The main living area offers plenty of seating in durable fabrics for large family gatherings. Pehlke often incorporates natural elements such as the end table, created from clam shells.

A round wood and iron dining table seats eight in the dining area, while a console serves as a buffet and a bar cabinet adds height.

S

tepping inside this well-appointed home at 99 Compromise Street Condominiums, one can easily forget that it was once part of a gymnasium. The Annapolis Rec Center, originally built in 1942 as a USO building, stood empty for several years until its most recent transformation into seven luxury condominiums by the Annapolis architectural firm, Hammond Wilson. The firm was able to retain the structure's existing exterior walls, in keeping with the goals of historic preservation. “Even though adaptive reuse work always has challenges, the structure of the building was sound,” said Leo Wilson, principal at Hammond Wilson. He added that the only major changes to the original building involved expanding a few windows, adding dormers to the roof (creating a third level within), and adding balconies to the front and rear of the building. “Since it was a former gym, the second

The firm created seven unique interior plans so that most of the units could enjoy water views, whether of the harbor, the Bay Bridge, or across Spa Creek. The city setting is exactly what tempted the owners to purchase this two-bedroom, two-and-a-half bath condo as their second residence. To bring their vision of an ideal Annapolis condo to life, they hired designer Wesley Pehlke of Simply Wesley to lead the charge. The homeowner’s requests were modest: create a relaxing space suitable for large family gatherings, emphasizing durability and functionality, while keeping a light, airy, coastal vibe. Pehlke started right to work, incorporating her signature twists along the way, which include striking dashes of color and unusual finishes. She not only helped with all of the builder selections, but also Vol. 10, No. 5 2019 57

The first thing you see when you open the French doors into the master bath is the tub, so Pehlke wanted the wall behind the tub to make a statement. Luxurious Walker Zanger tile in an octagonal diamond pattern fit the bill. 58

incorporated interesting architectural elements—adding built-ins, shiplap, and other distinct touches to create the cohesive coastal look throughout. “It’s the architectural elements, the functional furniture layout, and the beautiful details that make it all work,” said Pehlke. Pehlke slightly modified the architectural design by removing a doorway to create the foyer space. The expanse of the foyer led her to arrange the wood-look porcelain tile floors in a herringbone pattern, enhance the walls with grasscloth wallpaper, and add interesting light fixtures to draw the eye into the main living area. She even designed a vibrant red, 10-foot-long bench to serve as the entranceway’s focal point; its extended lines also guide the eye forward. In the main living area, the porcelain tile is arranged traditionally and continues throughout the condo, softened here and there by area rugs. A challenge for Pehlke was creating a combined dining and living space to maximize seating in a relatively small space. Her solution was to incorporate a round table in the dining room that seats eight and to use

furniture that could perform double duty. For example, the buffet doubles as a console for the adjacent living room. “It was a nice way to marry the two rooms,” said Pehlke. The space flows seamlessly from the dining area to the kitchen and the main gathering area where family can play games or watch TV. Anchoring the space is a large, comfortable gray sectional peppered with colorful throw pillows. Pehlke customized the kitchen design by including a wide-edge quartz countertop and a bar sink. She also made modifications to the cabinets, adding glass and enhancing the upper cabinets with a nickel wire mesh to break up the white. The basket-weave tile backsplash affords a touch of warmth, picking up the nickel color of the cabinets above. Off of the main living area, the doors open to the terrace, which spans the front of the building, providing a shady respite and a front-row view of the city. Pehlke assured plenty of seating with a long wood dining table that seats eight and another seating area with room for more to gather. Back inside, a guest and a master bedroom are situated behind the main living area, each with its own personality, while retaining a coastal elegance. The condo, like Annapolis, has a historical backdrop with layers of intriguing twists and turns. The neutral window shades, furniture, and walls are punctuated with artwork and nautical reds and blues, all seeming to express, “Welcome to Annapolis.” After all, Annapolis is certainly a colorful town, true to tradition, yet filled with culture and unexpected beauty. INCREASE YOUR CHANCE FOR THE

Highest Offer Annapolis Home connected with Michele Cordle, president of the Anne Arundel County Association of Realtors, to discuss the important advantages of hiring a professional realtor in today’s market. Below are her responses to our questions. IF YOU LIST YOUR HOME YOURSELF, WHAT ARE YOU MISSING BY NOT USING A REALTOR?

WHAT TOP THINGS DOES AN AGENT BRING TO PURCHASERS AND SELLERS?

Statistics show that sellers who do not engage a real estate professional to help sell their home forfeit 10 to 15 percent of their market value. Agents have access to vast organic networks. The sellers are missing the opportunity to expose their home to every buyer out there. When a seller has more traffic through the home, it increases the chance for a higher offer.

= Be the first to inform your buyers of the new inventory before it hits the general public.

WHAT DOES A REALTOR OFFER, ABOVE AND BEYOND WHAT AN INTERNET SEARCH ENGINE BRINGS TO THE TABLE, FOR HOMEBUYERS? When engaging in a relationship with a Realtor, the client receives hands-on help and expertise at every step through the transaction and beyond. This simply does not exist on the internet. Also, an agent can keep seller and buyer up to date on Agency and Disclosure laws and offer marketing skills to help sell the home. Your agent has the expertise necessary to negotiate price and navigate a 55-page sales contract successfully. And, importantly, an agent can introduce sellers to other professionals in the industry, such as mortgage lenders, title companies, home inspectors, and trade specialists in all fields.

= Market and network within the communities with a personal touch. = Identify explicitly what your client wants and needs. = Evaluate the property and suggest repairs and updates in order to help the seller get the best possible offer. = Negotiate to get the buyer the best value for their purchase. = Help and inform buyers and sellers with the best financing options along with other professional partners. In early fall, when I visit my garden, usually with a cup of coffee in hand, I am not ready to wind down the season. Even though the coneflowers have faded and the black-eyed susans have darkened and bend towards the earth, as if giving up, I want lush and developing beauty. I turned to landscape architect Jay Graham of Moody Graham Landscape Architecture for direction. During his 40+/- year career, which includes helping to found the University of Virginia’s Landscape Architecture program, I knew he would have something interesting to say. “My favorite composition this time of year is asters and goldenrod: the asters give the blues and purples, and the goldenrod, yellow-golds and yellow.” Leave it to a landscape architect to combine two of the most gorgeous colors in the color wheel. He makes the observation that plants that have the same requirements do best when planted together in drifts. “It is something I still continue to learn. ‘But though an old man, I am but a young gardener,’” he says, invoking Thomas Jefferson’s famous quote. He knows some dismiss goldenrod, blaming it for hay fever. This is a mistake! It is widely confused with ragweed, which blooms at the same time. There is much to admire about goldenrod. It is said to bring good fortune, its young leaves are edible, and Native Americans used its seeds for food. It provides nectar for migrating butterflies, and when planted near the vegetable garden, it attracts dangerous bugs. Sadly, it is considered a weed in most of North America. The British know better and adapted goldenrod as a garden plant far earlier than Americans, who did not embrace it in the garden until

84

the 1980s. Someone else quite famous knew about goldenrod: Thomas Edison. Edison experimented with goldenrod to produce rubber, which it naturally contains. He created a fertilization and cultivation process to produce a 12-foot plant that yielded 12% rubber. In fact, the tires he received from his friend Henry Ford were made from goldenrod.

Some say art gives us some version of truth. I believe this about herbs and flowers that rise from the ground and blossom without questioning their source. They are truth. When life becomes confusing and complicated, as it often does, goldenrod’s brash presence and unequivocal power, especially when paired with a delicate aster, are awe-inspiring. That it gives so many other wonderful things to us and to the environment is admirable; its place in the lifecycle is essential, as is ours. If you are up for it, incorporate these beauties into your own life cycle and your garden’s. They will brighten up your fall and lighten your heart, truly. Below: Goldenrod, Solidago, is a clump-forming perennial wildflower that exists on rainwater and adds a golden-hued beauty to the landscape. With over 100 different species, all goldenrods are late bloomers, flowering in late summer throughout fall with stunning bright yellow flowers.

Maryland Hall A NEW

BY CHRISTINE FILLAT

Grammy-winning artist Melissa Etheridge performed at Maryland Hall in August 2019.

Maryland Hall Celebrates 40 Years Offering Art For All It has been forty years since Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts’ inception in 1979. Built in 1932 and formerly the Annapolis High School, the stately icon reigns in its Upper-West Street neighborhood. As it celebrates its anniversary, its visionary founders would be proud. With Margaret Davis, the president and CEO of Maryland Hall, at the helm, the building is a hive of activity with artistic honey at its core.

86

ANNAPOLIS HOME

At any given time, its halls ring with symphonic music, singing, and the footsteps of dancers, directors, actors, and students. At certain hours, a visitor experiences a clay and paint-infused silence that is the wonderful sound of artists at work. Maryland Hall is home to five artists in residence who create and share their work as well as teach classes and conduct outreach programs. There are four resident companies: The Annapolis

“Let’s get out of our houses and let’s put down our devices and let’s connect as human beings— because that’s what’s going to make the difference in our world. That’s what’s going to be exciting.” - Margaret Davis, President and CEO of Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts.

Opera, Ballet Theatre of Maryland, The Annapolis Symphony, and Live Arts Maryland. The Annapolis Film Festival and the World Artist Experience are also major partners with Maryland Hall. Performing and fine arts classes for all ages are ongoing in the first-floor classrooms. Film, opera, symphonic, or pop music by renowned performers debut in the grand 725-seat auditorium. But there is more. Under Davis’s guidance, Maryland Hall has become a leader, stepping forth to merge art with social issues, adding new voices to cultural discourses. Recently, it hosted a racial equity institute program and an anti-violence initiative. “Art is both a unifying, a healing, and an inspiring force,” says Davis. “We have the opportunity to be a part of bringing people together and moving forward together.... This is the new Maryland Hall,” states Davis. “This is not what Maryland Hall is known for.”

For seven years, this program has helped thousands of young people create their artwork, tell their stories, and find success in life. Their strategic plan going forward is to engage more people in inspiring arts experiences. “The community is how we come together,” says Davis. To have an arts experience is particularly important these days when every human activity is in competition with computers and mobile phones. “Let’s get out of our houses and let’s put down our devices and let’s connect as human beings—because that’s what’s going to make the difference in our world. That’s what’s going to be exciting,” reflects Davis. Maryland Hall is not only serving the community as an artistic center, but also forging new territory: harnessing art’s power to heal, inspire, and communicate complex social issues and difficult personal truths. Travel

Alaska Annapolis to

Round Trip

By Elizabeth Davis | Photography by Tyler and Bruce Davis Our family has a fishing problem. One of us is a fly fisherman, who loves to match wits with his aquatic quarry. It’s all about the chase for him. Another is a sport fisherman who thinks the day is wasted if he doesn’t come home with the big one. Still another will fish for anything as long as it’s with a spinning rod. Me, I’m a nature lover, happy to sit outside in a beautiful place and cheer the rest of them on, whatever they’re fishing for and however they’re doing it. After kicking around a lot of ideas and talking to almost everyone we know, we decided on Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula. After flying into Anchorage, we found the Kenai an easy 2.5-hour drive from Anchorage, due south along the stunning Alaska Highway framed by snow-capped volcanoes. Avoid the crowds at Cooper Landing and head further west to the sleepy town of Sterling. Here, Alaska Drift Away Fishing operates from the Silver Tip Lodge. We had corresponded heavily beforehand with owners and guides, Jeremy, Nick, and Nigel, to tailor our trip. After careful consideration of all our needs, they designed our adventure and outfitted us with the necessary gear. The Silver Tip Lodge offers comfortable, self-care cabins, built by hand from native timber, and was our base of operations during our stay. Our guides wasted no time. On our first day, we fly-fished on the mighty Kenai, arguably Alaska’s most famous river. Sockeye (Red) Salmon arrive by the million from mid-June to mid-July. King Salmon and Silver (Coho) Salmon arrive at staggered intervals, from July through August. You will see more incredible scenery as you cast from drift boats, but don’t miss the chance to wade in. Standing waist-deep in that fast-running glacial water gives even 90

the most experienced angler respect for the power of nature in this vast place. Our sport fisherman tested his skills against pacific halibut, which feed in the deep, cold, nutrient-rich waters of the Cook Inlet at the western edge of the Kenai. With tides raging up to 27 feet, a good guide with a tough boat is everything when going after these game fish, which can exceed 200 pounds. For a laid-back day of spin casting, we hopped a sea-plane to one of the many glacial lakes that pockmark the majestic Alaska Range due north of the Kenai. Flying over miles of mountain top glaciers to land in what looks like a sea-green puddle from above is the experience of a lifetime. Here, far away from development of any kind, plentiful fish attract hungry wildlife. Brown bears and eagles competed with us for their own salmon feast. None of us will ever forget the pair of siblings swimming and wrestling while salmon leaped around them. For a land-based break, we drove to Homer, a small town an hour and half away from Sterling. Not only is Homer full of charming boutiques and galleries, it is also the home port for the famous Time Bandit of the Discovery Channel’s series Deadliest Catch. After lunch at the Little Mermaid, we jumped into a water taxi bound for the opposite shore and picked up the Grewingk Glacier Trail, which winds through dense flora and fauna to a surreal mountain top lake. With giant, bright blue icebergs floating in milky green water and the enormous Grewingk glacier rumbling in the distance, you will definitely know you aren’t in Maryland anymore.

Bruce, Tyler, Elizabeth, and Thompson Davis with the catch of the day.

Instead of driving straight back to Anchorage at the end of our stay, we took a quick detour to Seward at the southern edge of the Kenai. After breakfast at the Sunrise Inn (best pancakes ever!), we boarded a small cruising boat for a day trip through the renowned Kenai Fjords National Park, filled with whales, sea otters, puffins, sea lions, and enormous, calving glaciers. Even our captain was at a loss for words when a humpback whale swam under our boat and flashed its fluke so close, we felt like we could touch it. Be sure to book this well ahead, as the boats are small. We expected our trip to be all about fishing. The 52 pounds of salmon and halibut we flash froze and shipped home testifies to the quality and quantity of that. But our time in the Kenai was so much more. Our entire family is in awe of the vastness in Alaska and the way in which the wilderness touches every moment of your time there. I can’t recommend a trip to the Kenai highly enough. You will certainly return to Maryland with some stories of your own. AH Elizabeth Davis traveled recently to Alaska with her husband Bruce and their two sons, Tyler and Thompson. Davis is the Director of Advertising and Business Development at Annapolis Home. She has a MIA from Columbia University and lives on Gibson Island. Straight Up on Dining Out

M AY DA N BY CHRISTINE FILLAT

The air is perfumed from the wood fire as you make your way down the alley off of Florida Avenue to find the entrance of Maydan. The adventure starts here. There’s something magical that happens when you walk through the doors and into the high-ceilinged dining room. A massive open fireplace dominates the space, and you are glad to be seated at the bar right next to the chefs. You’re right in the center of the action. All the food is cooked right here, on the fire. Also, the fun of sitting at the bar is having easy access to bartender, who is only too happy to order for you. After she knows the menu inside and out, and we are only happy to relinquish the responsibility of what to order to advanced knowledge. 92

the all, too her

“We’re going to make a meal for you,” she says. We are enchanted. Founded on the concept of a multi-country journey, the food is inspired by the flavors of street food from Beirut, The Republic of Georgia, Tehran, and Tangier. The lights flicker; world beat music fills the air. Conversations bubble up, and it’s a party! It’s an atmosphere of joy! The bartender mixes me a drink: Library of Muses. A rethinking of the Negroni, it is made with Singani, a pomace brandy from Bolivia, and a very large slice of cucumber. The drink has—how do we say—a funk. It’s floral and slightly bitter. “It’s strange and nice,” says the bartender. I must agree.

Homemade bread comes to the table hot from the wood-fired oven, with delicate air pockets. There are pickled green beans, radishes, and cucumbers. A succession of plates is placed before us as they are ready: a flavorful chickpea salad. Grilled halloumi cheese. Beautifully fire-roasted carrots with a lemon harissa. Small bowls of condiments, some hot and spicy, some mildly seasoned, all individually exquisite, enhance every dish. A ground lamb kebab is adorned with a scattering of pistachio nuts. Shrimp are tangy in a lime tamarind and chile sauce. The only item I found less than perfect was the yogurt marinated saffron lamb. It had a toughness that I found less than appealing with chewy fatty layers. With a slice of semolina cake and a steaming cup of tea, we were fully transported. To get a reservation at Maydan, you have to go to their website at 10:00 a.m., 28 days before the day you want to dine. The place is that popular. Or you can do what we did and arrive for the 5:00 p.m. serving and see what openings they may have. It’s only been open for a little over a year and a half, but Maydan has created quite the buzz, with accolades from major food, travel, and fashion magazines. Your spirit of adventure will certainly be piqued dining here. This is a place where flavor is savored. They are cooking with fire. It’s wonderfully intimate, basic, and sophisticated—all at the same time. AH Christine Fillat lives on the Magothy River and is an aficionado of Chesapeake Bay cooking and living.

BioWall

“Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.” - Gary Snyder

By Michael Furbish | Photograph by Shooting Star Photography

Regular interaction with ecology has a measurable positive impact on our health and well-being. Almost universally, we enjoy being “in nature.” We maintain our lawns, we build landscapes, and we are drawn to our natural surroundings. Furbish, a Baltimore based company, aims to integrate living systems into the built environment seamlessly. The BioWall, an interior vertical garden, infuses ecology into spaces often stripped of any connection to nature. This was certainly the case with the JACK Thistledown Racino, a large casino in Cleveland, Ohio. Bright lights, screaming machines, and distractions from the outdoors make the novelty of this BioWall project so apropos. To learn more visit, furbishco.com 96

ANNAPOLIS HOME

JACK Thistledown broke from traditional casino interiors with this 2,300 square foot splash of nature in their atrium entrance. Every patron, employee, chef, security guard, maintenance worker— every human that enters the building—passes before this BioWall that proclaims, “you are not leaving nature behind!” The natural world accompanies you into this building. In this casino, ‘green’ is not just what you have in your pocket. With each installation of a living system, we sequester some carbon, filter some indoor air, sometimes save some energy, and always enhance biophilia—the term coined by E. O. Wilson describing our urge to connect with nature. Jack Entertainment does so in a least-expected setting. AH
