hile gazing upon the formal living room of this 1920s home in Bethesda with Doric columns, settees once owned by Valentino, and museum-quality art, it is hard to believe that the family has four dogs that roam freely throughout the house, jumping up and lounging upon furniture. But can “metropolitan elegance” and “canine-casual” truly co-exist? Interior designer Mary Douglas Drysdale says yes, with the help of luxury performance fabrics, of course. “It can be practical. It can be casual. It can be beautiful.” In fact, this is how the Europeans design, dissolving barriers between art and architecture, casual and informal, inside and out, she explains. “In Europe, there are no barriers between architecture and interior design,” says Drysdale, who studied art and architecture in the United States and extensively in Paris. As a child, she was steeped in the neo-classical traditions of the University of Virginia (where her father attended law school) and Monticello, where she learned that architecture was much more than beauty, sensing within its proportions a kind of sacred order. With the history of art and architecture in mind, she draws from a varied spectrum, adding architectural details to an interior and building a room out from there. For example, the light bluehued family room is harmonious. To this spacious rectangle with 12’ ceilings, Drysdale added Doric columns and panels in the 1920s vernacular. Elongated diamonds complete its neo-classical mood. Arranged in a geometric square, the custom blue rugs are compelling forms, especially when contrasted with the round white table. To make this room casual and livable, she worked with the owners, talking far into the night about placing the right columns in the right location, about texture, degrees, and intensities of color, and even spilling red wine on light performance fabrics to test their durability. “My decorative painter whisked a darker shade here and there; it is a subtle gesture you may not see initially, but as you get closer, you see there are two blues there. The walls will engage you because there is more there than flat paint,” she explains. Many people think her methods are complex, but Drysdale disagrees. “There is no magic. Each project has three things: architectural details, art, and décor. 34

“I create true-to-the-period architectural interiors but make them feel up to the moment and alive… with an unexpected piece of furniture, color, and modern art, painting a floor instead of putting down the usual oriental rug.” This is evident in the living room, with its original gold-engraved fireplace. Initially, the space was large yet plain. Drysdale added pediments above the doors, identical false doors with pediments, and crown molding hand-painted with a subtle dash of orange in the center of each motif. In conversation with these period details is a sculptural table by Wendell Castle that seems to blossom out in front of the couch. This is countered by bright orange modern prints by Donald Judd from the 1980s and a stunning recent work of concentric circles by Baltimore artist Linling Lu. “They work together because they are both about the line,” says Douglas. Lu’s giant circles are exciting and unusual yet adhere to a severe order due to the perfection of the circle’s unyielding form. Judd’s lines dare to be casual, to undulate ever so slightly. The circle closes the line into a contained form. It is subtle tensions such as these that Drysdale employs.

However, there is much more to a project—the intangible essence that makes a home one’s own. “The spirit of a home is something that comes from my clients,” she says. “They wanted their home to be comfortable for them and their dogs, and two of them are sizable, as big as Rottweilers.” Prior to this project, Drysdale had worked with the family on several of their homes. Yet, this current interior design manages to depart. She consulted with the woman who owned the home, more so than with previous projects. The wife’s favorite color is blue, which appears in the light blue family room, kitchen, and dining room. Yet, in other ways the projects are the same. “I think that what makes them similar is that there is a casual quality to the spaces decorated with linens and performance fabrics, that welcomes dogs and kids, combined with a dimensional grandness, that communicates a luxury not often found in an urban setting.

Comfort without pretense,” says Drysdale, adding that, within the mix are settees in the living room once owned by the couturier Valentino. This is why one hires an interior designer—to create a home composed of “favorite things,” but also to introduce a wider aperture to expand one’s vision, interrupt the natural solipsism of personal sight, and help one choose the rug not taken. In this palatial 8,500-square-foot home, the humble paws of dogs, elegant fabrics and upholstery, and modern art peacefully co-exist. From a four-legged perspective, the place is ideal. When a dog is happy—or any pet, whether furry, winged, or finned—a room becomes more alive, even beautiful. And, the entire family is quite comfortable, thanks to Drysdale’s ingenuity. Drawing upon the past and injecting the present moment, she has given them some unusual things to see, a different lens that is still their own. AH

ucked away at the end of a long private driveway in Annapolis, a sprawling home on the Severn has long drawn oohs and aahs, particularly for its grand exterior. The house sits a stone’s throw away from the Severn River, with awe-inspiring views of Annapolis. The ample backyard houses an elegant infinity pool, surrounded by plenty of seating areas. Mature, native-inspired landscaping provides a colorful framework for the home year-round. The shingle style home recently underwent an interior design overhaul. Steve Terhune, the home’s architect, says he modeled it after turn-of-the-century houses in the Hamptons, considered America’s versions of “castles made of wood.” Now the home’s interior exudes a modern coastal aesthetic.

FROM DATED FRENCH COUNTRY TO BREEZY COASTAL

The homeowners never set out to change the entire look of their home’s interior. Originally, they hired Annapolis-based interior designer Gina Fitzsimmons to give an upstairs bedroom a facelift and convert half of an adjoining storage area (containing the HVAC unit) into a bathroom. The results were too inspiring not to expand upon. “They liked my Chesapeake, cozy look,” says Fitzsimmons of her clients, whose family of six makes this Annapolis home their primary residence.

Once she landed on this appealing aesthetic, Fitzsimmons renovated the entire first floor, transforming the traditional Country French style into one with an unmistakably relaxed coastal vibe.

IMPECCABLE ATTENTION TO DETAIL

Several incremental changes resulted in a dramatically different look and feel. A new color scheme throughout the home—consisting primarily of white, sea blue, driftwood hues, and gray—set the tone. It’s a significant departure from the interior’s earlier iteration, dominated by heavy furniture, dark wood floors, and busy wall treatments like ornate Damask wallpaper. Formal chandeliers, some with dangling crystals, were swapped for simple, fun modern light fixtures like the one in the dining room, designed to look like a sideways corkscrew—fitting, given the handsome wine rack in the corner of the room. Also, in the dining room, the designer made sure the wine labels faced outward in the racks, allowing them to be more of a conversation piece. Details! Some of the renovations involved not just a designer’s detailed eye, but intensive manual labor, too. For instance, the elegant curved handrail on the main level’s staircase was sanded several layers down to its original wood finish before being painted a light color that perfectly complements the floors, previously Red Oak but also sanded down to bare wood, then stained grey and sealed.

The transformation is complete: the former traditional Country French style home now has a relaxed coastal vibe.

“I had a feeling for what they wanted and how they lived, and I kept working toward it,” Fitzsimmons says.

MATCHING FORM WITH FUNCTION

Ultimately, the renovations led to a living space that was a better match for Fitzsimmons’ clients; not just stylistically, but functionally, too. Some were small tweaks. In the kitchen, redesigning a second island allowed it to seat all six family members, with bar stools facing the Severn River. Now occupants enjoy gazing at birds, boats, and the river currents from their perch in the kitchen as opposed to the former design, which had them staring at the stove. In another clever tweak, the other half of the “dining island” incorporated a curved banquette built to accommodate a six-foot round table. Other changes created new spaces for the family to enjoy. Moved under the staircase, the piano, with its exquisitely curved form, looks as if it belongs there. The switch freed up room to allow the family to more easily gather in the main level’s living room area. Also, on the main level, a formerly underutilized office was re-envisioned as a game-slash-homework room where family members have been caught doing old-fashioned jigsaw puzzles. The bar underwent perhaps the most significant aesthetic change, but its purpose remains intact.

Fitzsimmons describes the former space as a traditional “man cave”—one the homeowner was reluctant to change until Fitzsimmons convinced him it would remain a favorite gathering spot. With his approval, she went to work. Dark cherry paneled walls were painted white. On the clean bright walls, nauticalthemed photos by Annapolis’ own Jay Fleming were carefully positioned inside the raised paneled walls and trimmed with a one-inch “Hale Navy” pinstripe. The same navy is picked up as an accent color on the ceiling, whose recessed lighting is secondary to the copious natural light streaming in from the room’s ample windows. The bar provides not only a perfect view of the backyard; its two doors lead directly to the outdoor space. On a hot summer morning, a deflated float toy at the water’s edge offers the only proof that children sometimes splash in the elliptical swimming pool with a vanishing edge that connects the property to the Severn River. “The pool was placed on an axis with the game room to catch the reflection of downtown Annapolis on its dark surface,” says Bob Hruby of Campion Hruby Landscape Architects. “The vision was that of a dish of water reflecting the sky.” Hruby also designed the pool and pool house in collaboration with Mike Prokopchak and team at Walnut Hill Landscape Company.

Campion-Hruby has designed gardens on the property for over 15 years. In this project, they surrounded the pool’s generous seating areas, cabana, and large cedar pergola with blooming shrubs and flowers, adding bursts of late-summer color and lending shade to loungers and outdoor diners.

L AY E R E D L I G H T I N G Purposeful lighting design can create a special place in your home, improve functionality of many kinds of spaces and inject interest in your design. SRD aims to complement interior and architectural design by adding depth through highlighting special architectural features, textures, and pattern. Such varied fixtures as recessed downlight, decorative pendants, table lamps and undercabinet lighting allow us to create compelling spaces throughout a home. Implementing fixtures that cast light from above, through the use of recessed downlighting, creates functional overhead lighting. Decorative pendants that drop down over tables and islands help anchor the space while also adding visual interest. Wall mounted lighting such as sconces, or picture lights, helps add a soft light to a vertical wall, allowing your eye to rest on the element and guiding your gaze into the space. Undercabinet lighting creates functional lighting in the kitchen or within bookcases. “N

ew York boutique brought to the Chesapeake Bay.” That’s how Arlene Critzos, principal and president of Interior Concepts Incorporated, describes 134 Prince, the luxury hotel she and members of her team recently designed for the property’s new owners, Cody Monroe and Clinton Ramsden. Monroe and Ramsden were intent on creating a hotel experience that’s distinctly Annapolitan and the description—“boutique”— reflects the trend of travelers who seek unique lodgings that are every bit as special as their destination. Two U.S. Naval Academy graduates (2011), Monroe and Ramsden bonded over their interest in real estate development during their time in the Navy. This led to their endeavor to “rehabilitate” the 1849 property on Prince George’s Street in the heart of downtown Annapolis, combining its historical charm with modern amenities. And what a transformation the building has gone through. Many Annapolis locals will undoubtedly recall the bright blue exterior with its gaudy yellow trim, reminiscent of the Painted Ladies of Alamo Square in San Francisco or Charles Village in Baltimore. But far from following a trend, the previous owner was simply paying tribute to the Naval Academy, according to what Monroe and Ramsden were told. The hotel has now been toned down to a tasteful white with a light pink door—and that’s just the start of the transformation. Previously, the 4,000-square-foot Dutch Colonial was dated and reflected a mishmash of styles, decorated with “whatever [the previous owners] could find to put these rooms together,” says Andrea Blamphin, senior residential designer with Interior Concepts. Blamphin, along with residential designer Megan Ligday, was part of Critzos’ team that worked on the hotel, transitioning the rooms from cluttered, boldly colored, over-textured and over-patterned eclecticism into something contemporary and quiet. Much of the change focused on emphasizing the natural beauty of the original features of the house—the hardwood floors, the brick fireplaces, and the molding. “Guests will comment on the

imperfect wooden floors; they love to see the waviness in the original single-pane glass windows that have been warped over 150 years. That really resonates with guests,” says Ramsden. “Any attempt to change that historical aesthetic would ultimately not serve the interests of the guests and of the hotel.” While little historical record is available about the original builder and owner of the house, Monroe and Ramsden have taken care to understand as much of the backstory of the property as possible. They explain that the house was built with ten bedrooms—eight upstairs across the second and third floors, and two in the basement. The only bathroom was a half-bath on the ground floor, designed to serve the entire household. Over the years, half the bedrooms were converted to full baths to make the house more accommodating. Monroe and Ramsden believe the building served as a private residence for much of its history, though it had been a bed-and-breakfast for 13 years before they bought it in 2019. Paying tribute to centuries past played into the vision Interior Concepts had for the design— most notably in the hotel’s lounge, a room dominated by an enormous work of sepia-tinted art that hangs behind the sofa. The print depicts people of a nondescript past century beneath tall, widespread trees—an image Blamphin describes as “a snapshot of another time, a generalization of a historical time.” It isn’t Annapolis in the 19th century, but it evokes a sense of yesteryear that Blamphin expects will remind guests of “the roots of this area.” Interior Concepts drew inspiration from this artwork to design the contemporary color scheme for the room. The original wood mantel over the fireplace, along with the lantern-style lights hanging from the ceiling, give a nod to history. By contrast, the mixed-metal coffee table keeps things just modern enough for guests to feel as if they’re in the 21st century. Interior Concepts maintained the same sepia-inspired neutral palette throughout the rest of the hotel, accenting the light walls with touches of black, metal, natural wood, and brick. The result is an elegant, comfortable atmosphere Blamphin says will serve as a “blank canvas for their guests and events.”

Across the hall from the lounge, the dining room and kitchen similarly maintain the building’s historical elements while emphasizing comfort and practicality. Monroe vividly remembers considering taking out the built-in shelves in the dining room—until the Interior Concepts team encouraged him to keep them. “They said, ‘No, no, that adds wonderful dimension to this room,’” he explains. “‘What you need to do is get rid of the books and just paint them white.’ And so, we did just that—and it really shines now.” The shelves, which once held stacks of books, magazines, and knickknacks, now hold a select few old books and accessories. They also serve as a nook for coffee and tea service. The flight of stairs, cleaned to showcase the beauty of the original wood and fitted with a custom runner, leads to the second and third floors, where each suite has a signature color that pops out from the neutral backdrop. “If you strip away some of the accents in terms of lamps, pillows, accessories, they have a commonality to them,” Blamphin says. “But there’s a common thread of fabric, tone, textures, finishes—they’re all similar, room to room.”

One of the hotel’s standout rooms, the Presidential Suite, finds character in the exposed brickwork and wood beams crisscrossing overhead. These wood beams have been fixed with lights that aren’t visible from the room below, but when they’re illuminated at night, they shine uplighting on the ceiling overhead, an effect Monroe and Ramsden refer to as “star lighting.” Following the redesign, Monroe and Ramsden see the hotel as more than just a place where guests can lay their heads on a pillow and get some sleep. They see it as a place where visitors can feel closer to Annapolitan comfort, a place where they can appreciate the historical significance of an old house and, by extension, an entire city. As they see it, the newly designed hotel should serve as a focal point of a tourist’s visit and reflect what they are coming to Annapolis to enjoy. AH

Nuanced Color What are the key elements that pull this space together?

For this particular space, multiple textures and contrasting neutrals create a harmonious base layer. Using a variety of materials such as linen, leather, boucle, and sisal you are adding depth. What pulls it all together is staying within the same color palette.

Where do you start when designing with a neutral color palette? There are three paths you can take in terms of overall color tone—cool, warm, or a blend of the two. We determine the client’s preference at the onset of a project because it will influence every material selection we will make. Sound important? We think so! The colors of a space can completely change the rhythm and overall feel.

How do keep the room interesting if you are using one color palette? The success of a design lies in the details, accessories are key. Just like when you are throwing on your favorite jewelry when getting dressed up, adding accents to your home completes the look. Personal touches will elevate your space to feel like a home rather than a catalog. Mix in family photos, plants and flowers, and art to convey who you are and what you like. And don’t underestimate the power of a patterned pillow.

I can’t help but notice your very subtle use of white paint. Tell us about that. Painting a room white provides a fresh, quiet space which opens up your home to so many opportunities and possibilities. Even the smallest variation between white paints can cast a vastly different effect. It may seem silly to sample three to four white paint colors before making that final call, but we encourage our clients to sample, sample, sample!

T he Artistry of Furniture JULIA CONSOLE

There are many fine furniture designers. With so many options at your fingertips, what made you dive in and design your own collection? I never set out to design my own furniture! But over the years, many industry professionals kept approaching me, saying the same thing over and over—that I should design my own furniture line. So, finally, one evening I sat down with a sketchpad and began drawing. In a matter of minutes, I had so many pieces! These were the beginnings of my first collection. It’s nice to have something of my own that expresses my own taste and who I am as a designer. And I have so much more versatility when it comes to size, scale, and finishes.

What inspires your furniture designs? ADELE CONSOLE

I ﬁnd inspiration in travel, art, and fashion and am drawn to geometric forms. Also, growing up in Budapest, I have traveled the world and unconsciously absorbed many aesthetics and architectural styles. I like forward thinking, I like modern, and I like the unexpected. But there’s always a base that I touch upon. For me, that’s Art Deco and Art Nouveau. I can trace my work back to various architectural details, such as a window frame, a gate, or a front door in Budapest.

Tell us a little about the Peek-a-Boo Coffee Table and Console Collection. PEEK-A-BOO COFFEE TABLE Katlin Farnady is an award-winning interior designer specializing in residential and commercial design. She has just launched her eponymous furniture collection, with some pieces crafted by the renowned Niermann Weeks. She was born in Budapest, Hungary, and lives in Annapolis, Maryland. In her free time, Farnady judges regional art and design competitions. Also, she hosts many events, fostering a lively exchange between the Washington, D.C. and Annapolis art and design communities.

Whenever there is a bare tabletop, we think we must put something on it. So, I thought why not design a table that would never need a centerpiece! The Peek-a-Boo Coffee Table has raised ornamental art nouveau-inspired balls on its surface yet still functions nicely. I designed the Console Collection with my three daughters in mind. Each piece has some detail that reflects their personality. For example, “Emma,” named after my eldest, blends classical and art deco elements, and is “on point,” much like her personality. “Adele” is a blossoming flower, just like her—always full of beautiful surprises. “Julia” has both matte and glossy ﬁnishes and is stately, even with twists and turns. This daughter is very black and white; she knows what she wants and goes for it. Even if she changes her mind, she goes right after that next thing and gets that.

This room looks so effortless. What was your starting point?

Art plays an important role in many of your designs. Tell us about that.

There were two driving forces. First, the dramatic architecture. It was important not to interrupt the view but to frame it. Second, the artwork! I decided a spare color palette would enhance the vibrancy of the art and show off the ever-changing vista outside. I used minimal accessories with clean furniture lines to achieve an effortless appeal.

Art is the perfect way to add personality to a room. It gives insight into the people that inhabit a space. I find that very compelling. In this case, the beautiful impressionistic painting by artist Tim Beall was part of the client’s collection. The rural scene and the interesting colors really shine in this space.

How did you create so much depth with neutrals? That is harder than it looks!

What do you like best about this room?

This room is serene and neutral yet visually exciting. Aside from the interesting architecture, texture and color variation in the furnishings are key. We used a range of whites with soft fawn browns and hints of gray. The beautifully carved credenza, the fluffy soft rug, the linen drapery, even the planks and beams on the ceiling add textural interest. Nothing about this color palette is boring!

There are so many elements I love about this room. The neutral color palette is warm and timeless. The pieces look like they have been collected over time. The light fixture anchors the space but is light and airy. The room is full of natural materials but together it’s quite polished. What I love most about this room is that it reflects the personality and aesthetic of the clients. They are thrilled with the result.

The stone was your starting point. What are the other key elements? This space includes two islands—neither designed for seating. One matches the cabinetry and is mainly for food prep. The antique island is for serving. With no island seating, family and guests flow through the entire home versus staying in the kitchen. We also added arched casement windows and standard casements to let in natural light and improve the layout and functionality.

What do you like best about this project? I love that it feels unique and timeless. I also love that we mixed old and new pieces and higher and lower price points to create something really beautiful. The high-end custom cabinetry has moderately priced hardware. We upgraded the appliance pulls, blended the lighting sources, added vintage art and yet they all speak to each other. We layer natural, neutral elements so clients can easily add in touches of their own. Our non-standard formula is what makes this house feel like a home. I think we were really successful doing that here.

ARCHITECTS & THEIR CHAIRS By Emma Hlousek

Architects and furniture have always been connected by forms, movements, and time periods or by an architect’s desire to build their own pieces. Their design is their voice. We offer here a historical introduction of some (but by no means all) of the seminal chairs from the modern period that have had a lasting impact on furniture design. When Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus in Dessau, Germany, in 1919, he started a movement that introduced designs of varying mediums and disciplines and highlighted surrealism and abstract expressionism. Emerging as one of the greatest architects from the Bauhaus, Marcel Breuer designed the Vassily Chair. This chair simplified the traditional, and, like the Bauhaus, it moved towards more modern and progressive designs. Though it was forced to close in 1933 due to Nazi influence, the Bauhaus continued to inspire styles and great artists. Mid-century modernist architect and Bauhaus director Mies Van der Rohe is most known for his wide range of work following the First World War and for inspiring a modern movement. Though his principle was “less is more,” his work can be recognized by its perfection and attention to detail. Van der Rohe is credited with creating the Barcelona Chair, which showcases his favor for modern materials and introduces progressive concepts.

Frank Lloyd Wright put meaning behind all his one thousand structures: “The mission of an WOOD AND LEATHER OR FABRIC architect is to help people understand how to make life more beautiful, the world a better one for living in, and to give reason, rhyme, and meaning to life.” Wright’s work reflected the horizontal, clean, open landscape of the American prairie. Inspired by Japanese origami, his Taliesin 1 Chair designed in 1949 demonstrates stability and reflects the clean, sophisticated style he aspired to achieve with his work.

French modern architecture pioneer Le Corbusier led a different transformation in the 20th Century with his geometric, clear style. The idea of the modern machine was one that appealed to him; he believed that for a house to serve as a “machine

He designed his own furniture, including the LC2 chair, with a simple, modern form to minimize the use of traditional materials while embodying a rationalist style. Canadian architect Frank Gehry’s buildings are eye-catching works of art. His structures appear in fragments and disconnected parts, embodying deconstructivist styles. His Easy Edges furniture line consists of various pieces constructed from cardboard, reflecting his unexpected designs. His Bubble Chaise is functional and creates art from a common material. Twenty-first-century British architect Zaha Hadid’s unique work represents the future and the progress of society with a touch of her optimism. She took time to organize, plan, and design her structures—a practice that is also evident in her wide variety of furniture. Her work is admired and found in various countries around the world, and she has inspired the future of architecture and design. Her Kuki Chair demonstrates her idea of appealing to the senses by using fluidity and dynamism in her designs. French designer Emmanuelle Moureaux is the creator of the “shikiri” concept, through which she builds spaces with the use of color, creating layers and eliciting emotions. Inspired by “Mikado,” the European game of pick-up sticks, Moureaux’s Stick Chair showcases her attempt to achieve an “unbalanced balance” through wooden structures that support an acrylic base, where the wood bends to show refraction and dimension.

admires the minimal yet elegant Paimio Scroll chair c.1931 because it was designed by one of her favorite Modern architects, Alvar Aalto of Finland. The chair is classic Modernism with its form following its function of comfort by being the first chair to utilize the shape of the plywood seat to act as a natural spring. It is part of the MoMA collection in NYC.

Annapolis appreciates the Marcel Breuer Wassily Chair, 1925, stating, “I love everything about it. Both lovely to look at and very interesting to look at and to ponder the how and why—yet VERY comfortable.” As mentioned in the introduction, as Breuer’s Wassily Chair was constructed of steel and cowhide leather, it opposed the traditional decorative chair and embodied Bauhaus principles.

Washington, D.C. selected the Thomas Moser Chaise, 2000, explaining that it “is a wonderful collage of Asian, French, and American traditions from the ’20s and ’30s. It is supremely comfortable and has a really sophisticated balance mechanism.” Made out of wood and full-grain leather, the Thomas Moser Chaise is inspired by international architects from the early 20th Century.

Baltimore admires Eero Saarinen’s Tulip Armchair, 1957. She states that the “Tulip chairs (and table) were designed to minimize the ‘visual clutter’ of chair and table legs in an artistic way. Each chair is supported by a single graceful ‘stem’ on a very heavy base for support. Designed in 1957, the tulip chairs create a satisfying visual form with only aluminum and molded fiberglass.

Annapolis admired Arne Jacobsen’s Egg Chair, 1958, because he “likes it for the form of the chair and the shape of the inside that makes it a space within a space.” After originally designing the chair for the SAS Royal Copenhagen Hotel with fabric or leather upholstery and an aluminum base, Arne Jacobsen’s Egg Chair inspired many variations.

Breakout Talent Design Collective DC Offers a Network for BIPOC Designers By Dylan Roche

At first, the group that would grow to eventually become the Design Collective DC was just a casual gathering. But the designers involved—Iantha Carley, Shawna Underwood, Charles Almonte, Dennese Guadeloupe Rojas, and Quintece Hill-Mattauszek—saw a need and an opportunity to provide support and representation for BIPOC professionals in their field (Black, indigenous, and people of color). Then when 2020 brought national discourse around race, the founders realized their goal was even more relevant— “not just in the field of design, but in general,” explains Almonte. “The fact that we’re BIPOC, there are certain issues where we’re more comfortable talking with fellow BIPOC,” he adds.

Hill-Mattauszek adds that “[P]art of the process of what we’re trying to do is say we’re here and we want to make sure other BIPOC creatives in our area have a support system.”

What Are They Working On? We recently had the chance to get to know a few of the founding members better after they shared their work with us. When Quintece Hill-Mattauszek of Studio Q Designs started working with a client on a rental apartment, there were two considerations from the very beginning. Firstly, as an avid reader, her client needed a place to keep a huge book collection. Secondly, because the home was a rental, built-in bookcases were not an option. Hill-Mattauszek solved this dilemma by starting with a wall of floating shelves. And this naturally led the rest of the design. “When I started looking at her collection, what jumped out to me was all the colorful spines,” she says. To make the books stand out, she knew she had to keep much of the design neutral. “There needs to be a sense of balance to the

space,” she explains. “A lot of times when you’re working with strong colors and a strong emphasis on color, it’s nice to give the eye a place to rest. If the walls are busy and bright and bold, then I’m probably going to tone down the furniture and vice versa.” But the apartment did get one final pop of color with the L-shaped couch that dominates the main living space. Hill-Mattauszek explains that although a green couch and yellow couch were considered, the client chose a blue one, which adds a bold look to the space. Daring color choices also play into the work of Charles Almonte of Charles Almonte Architecture | Interior Design, who recently transformed a client’s unfinished basement into a dazzling entertainment room. Wallpaper by Osborne & Little provided him a palette of purple, green, and blue from which to pull inspiration. “That was the jumping-off point,” he says, noting that sticking to only three colors meant the design wouldn’t be overwhelming. “It’s good to have color, but not too much. You have to know when to stop.… If you work in those parameters of [only three or four] colors, you create a cohesive look overall. It’s a matter of restraint and control.”

The DC Collective formed to support each other in the interior design field. The founding members are Iantha Carley, Shawna Underwood, Charles Almonte, Dennese Guadeloupe Rojas, and Quintece Hill-Mattauszek To give the room a bit more “pizazz” and to achieve an atmosphere similar to a hotel lounge, he incorporated glass in the form of the chandelier over the pool table and the top to the bar. These elements ultimately create an atmosphere conducive to his clients’ frequent entertaining and hosting. Dennese Guadeloupe Rojas of Interiors by Design is another proponent of using color in a balanced way for maximum effect. In one recent project, a client sought a complete redesign of their main floor. With no furniture to serve as a starting point, Rojas looked at the colors on the second floor for inspiration. “They got rid of everything, and we were starting from ground zero, so we worked off the colors upstairs,” she says. But she’s judicious in her use of color because she knows neutral has a timelessness to it. “A lot of what I do is softer tones with a pop of color,” she says. “I love letting clients feel you’ve done a major investment in the major pieces, and then we add a stroke of something strong you can always change out, whether it’s a pop of orange, a pop of purple, a pop of blue.” 100

Looking Forward As the Design Collective DC gains prominence, its founders hope their platform will serve to help other BIPOC professionals find exposure. “People will see what we bring to the table as individual designers,” Rojas says. They’re also exploring the benefits they can offer their fellow designers—everything from scholarships to shared resources. With many opportunities foreseen, they’re committed to meeting the needs of those seeking support and representation in the design community. AH

Painting with Grasses By Kymberly Taylor

Perennial gardens have their own timing and visual tempo, with some flowers fading just as others come into bloom. Inevitably, there are bare and brown moments, necessary “pauses” in the earth’s score. Many gardeners fill these spots with annuals, yet, as fall approaches, even the most dependable blossoms tire. To help ease such transitions during Maryland’s hot summers, grasses are ideal. Once established, most specimens are easy to grow, need very little water, and even prefer poor soil. When it comes to design, you can use grasses much like an artist uses paint—especially if you choose hardy pink Muhlenbergia capillaris. This 3’ ornamental fast-growing perennial, especially ‘Plumetastic’, has a stately arching form and, happily, is salt-tolerant and deer-resistant. When planted in masses, the effect is astonishing—the grasses act much like brushstrokes in an impressionist painting. When in bloom, flamingo pink feathering tips fade to deep purple, then dusky mauve and seem to float in the air, emanating a kind of halo. From late summer through fall, they merge to create giant clouds of brilliant color, especially when seen from afar. When starting your endeavor, think about composition. Become aware of the light patterns in your garden. Watch daily for a while, and in the sunniest spots, “paint” with clusters of muhly. It is in the sun where the muhly will grow best and shine forth. Don’t be mousy, just planting a couple here and there. Plant in masses of at least five to ten, suggests landscape architect Jay Graham.

Note that other plantings in your garden will be affected and will either gain or lose contrast and consistency, depending on their distance from these grasses. To counter the brighter pinks and mauves of the muhly, use off-white grasses. The 6’ to 10’ dramatic well-defined silver plumes of Cortaderia selloana ‘Patagonia’—a hardy pampas grass that grows well in Maryland’s zone 7—are stunning when paired with the muhly’s softer texture. Another paint-worthy grass is Miscanthus sinensis ‘Variegatus’ maiden grass. Its pleasing rounds frame the wild and sweeping muhly; bold green and white striped leaves become luminous when planted nearby. There is something splendid about grasses—how they rise upright, arch gracefully, round and mound, how they move in the wind. See what fits your vision, your garden’s personality and conditions. Do you need soft feathers or operatic plumes? A border of sassy miniatures or a screen of stately towers? Or some combination of all of the above? Even as grasses die in the winter to regenerate, they give back. Not only do they provide habitats for small wildlife, they take on unusual forms, especially when tipped with frost or raindrops or merely silhouetted against a January sky. Grasses are continually expressive. In the coldest months, they are the silence we crave. This is a story of sandwiches. Here are some of our very favorite sandwiches we have had recently in Annapolis restaurants. What we found is that Annapolis is a great sandwich town! Every venue has its own personal take on the classics—and innovative ways to put it all together. Sandwiches are also ideal for sharing. Divvying up a couple of sandwiches to share among friends is a delightful way to experience the inner workings of a clever chef ’s mind and to discover together what makes each sandwich great.

THE ROMAN

A dining companion suggests this is the Thelonious Monk of the sandwich world, with its quiet, penetrating tastes of subtle ingredients. On griddled sourdough bread, there is a melody of grilled chicken, bacon, and melted provolone cheese. Spicy Buffalo sauce, ranch dressing, and bits of blue cheese round out this improvisation on classic Buffalo wings. A great reason to bebop to Eastport. — $11.98

The Roman is a classic cold cut sandwich with prosciutto, capicola, hot peppers, tomato, and onion, all dressed with a house vinaigrette on an Italian roll. All the flavors are fresh. This is a sandwich that is made to travel, perfect for picnics or an evening sail. — $8.48

CHICKEN BISCUIT

BLACK GARLIC ROAST BEEF

This is an amusing sandwich to behold. A tender homemade biscuit holds a piece of fried chicken breast that is much larger than the biscuit. You have to make your way around the chicken to get to the flaky biscuit—which isn’t a bad thing. The chicken is soaked in a milk-and-Buffalo sauce before being battered and fried to crunchy perfection. Sriracha honey drizzled over the whole sandwich delivers oomph. This sandwich is comfort food at its finest. — $10.89

This is one beautiful sandwich. The roast beef is piled high with a luscious espresso and truffle aioli. A pistachio pomegranate slaw and arugula add crunch. All is held in substantial housemade sourdough bread. During my visit to In Grano, I spotted Scott Herbst, owner of Sailor Oyster Bar, lunching with Max Jeffers, a local musician. They were both having the roast beef sandwich. “It has to be good for me to come to Riva to eat,” Herbst quipped. Amen, brother. This is a sandwich worth traveling for. — $16.00

Craving a classic Reuben sandwich? Davis’ Pub has a respectable version with generous slices of corned beef, melty Swiss cheese, and sauerkraut, touched lightly with Thousand Island dressing. The kitchen has a great handle on frying this sandwich properly; the rye bread is studded with a smattering of parsley, then griddled with just the right amount of oil. It’s served nice and hot. Have plenty of napkins on hand. — $13.99

The oysters are trucked into McGarvey’s from the James River in Virginia each morning and afternoon, then shucked, battered, and fried to order. This sandwich has all the right component parts: crispy fried oysters, a smattering of crunchy coleslaw, slices of the freshest tomato I’ve seen all summer, and a drizzle of chipotle remoulade on lightly toasted French bread. This is the oyster po’boy that dreams are made of. — $15.00

This take on the Cuban sandwich is delicious with hot-from-thegriddle fire-smoked ham and roast pork, melty gruyère cheese, and a crunch of housemade dill pickles on a toasted roll. “There are lots of different things in your bite that are good,” states owner Tony Moynagh. — $9.50

This gyro is everything a gyro should be with a tangy cucumber yogurt sauce and chopped tomato. Then the combination veers. The kitchen engages in a little culinary alchemy, making a spicy terrine of blue catfish and slicing it onto the tender griddled flatbread. You would swear you were eating a traditional meaty gyro. But there is nothing fishy about this gyro; it is other-worldly. It stands on its own. — $18.00

JOHNNY MAC’S PESTORINI This sandwich is a powerhouse of a conglomeration. This chicken, lettuce, and tomato sandwich is enlivened with pickled poblano and red onion and laced throughout with pesto. Melted mozzarella cheese holds it all together on a toasted sub roll with pesto mayo. This sandwich is named in honor of John McNamara, one of the Capitol Gazette victims, who loved the Pestorini. — $9.50

2021 INNOVATION AND DESIGN AWARD WINNER FROM BOAT INTERNATIONAL Judges note that one of the most outstanding features of CeFeA’s exterior design is the two separate spacious cockpits. Another is the deck area that provides a dedicated space and ample room for guests to relax and visit while the captain and crew take care of details. One cockpit is connected to the owner’s stateroom for privacy—a thoughtful touch. The choice to cast the upper half of the aft bulkhead of the master suite in glass and position it to overlook the private aft cockpit is a fresh, innovative, well-conceived feature. Though the judges admired its modern styling and ultra-sleek coach roof, they equally appreciated how shrouds, winches, runners sheets, and mooring lines were kept well away from guest areas for safety. The twin wheels are well positioned up and aft of the guest area, so the captain has a clear view of the crew and guests during maneuvers. Overall, the CeFeA is designed for smooth sailing and, with its dining area up front, it promises an enjoyable voyage for captain, crew, and visitors alike.
