HAUTE WATERS Explore two very different pools by master designers.

Landscape designed by Walnut Hill Landscape Company

Vol. 6, No. 3 2015 19

Publishers’ Letter Welcome to the May/June issue of Annapolis Home, which has a focus on high design. To us, high design can take many different forms: what unites them all is their drive forward, their liberties, their fresh perspective. Whether in a foyer, pool, home, or in cuisine, high design is visually arresting in its attention to detail, its contrasts, its richness and texture. You’ll see that it cannot be defined but it can be recognized, calling our spirits and provoking our thoughts as we think back at it. We may love it or hate it but admire it nonetheless for breaking through.

OVER THE EDGE POOL DESIGN

Perhaps the most romantic pool is one that seems to spill off into the horizon, out into the sea. What could be more delightful than to float in a pool where the edge seems to slip right into the Chesapeake Bay? This waterfront home situated at the mouth of the Magothy River overlooks the Baltimore Lighthouse and beyond. Sailing ships pass by. Beneath the shade of white pine and magnolia trees is a pool deck for lounging and taking turns diving into the deep end. The thoughtful placement of the pool is due to the skilled eye of Mike Prokopchak of Walnut Hill Landscape Company. “When I saw this view,” states Prokopchak, “I said this is a perfect location for a vanishing edge pool.” Nestled between the house and the property line, the pool is sited one hundred feet from the edge of the Magothy River, as mandated by Anne Arundel County. Siting the pool so close to the home creates an enclave of privacy. Along the property line, evergreen trees enclose the site. The homeowners requested a pool deep enough for diving, so Prokopchak designed a pool in an L shape where divers can dive and swimmers can swim. The pool is concrete, poured in place, with a green glass tile edge. The decks are Pennsylvania flagstone and the coping of the pool is Indiana limestone. Prokopchak had to elevate the pool area 24" to accommodate the vanishing edge effect. “We had to form it, and shoot the concrete of the pool,” states Prokopchak. At the waterfront side of the pool form is a weir wall, where the water spills over the edge. “That’s what gives you the illusion that it’s

26

Annapolis Home

falling into the bay,” says Prokopchak. Flanking the weir wall are two classically shaped custom-made bowls that fill with water and spill over, like the pool. The total effect is very much like the pools of ancient Rome, where sculpture combines with architectural forms for an appealing aesthetic.

“Pools are a combination of art and science.” Mike Prokopchak,

Walnut

Set in the shallow end of the pool is a bubbling yearround spa. Prokopchak placed it here to keep the spa in close proximity to the house for easy access.

Adjacent to the pool and spa is a patio with a massive stone fireplace and a gracefully arched pergola. Custom-built in mahogany, the pergola is supported Hill Landscape Company by wooden columns identical to those in the structure of the main house. The patio is paved with the same Pennsylvania flagstone that lines the pool deck. The stone that forms the base of the house is the same stone that is used for the fireplace and for the retaining walls forming planters and separating the patio from a garage and parking pad. Garden gates, custom-built of mahogany, further enclose the patio, completing the private environment of the pool area.

Vol. 6, No. 3 2015 27

This repetition of materials creates a cohesive well thought-out leisure space that is pleasing to the eye as well as a logical connection to the house. In keeping with the simplicity of forms in the space, Prokopchak kept the planting materials to just a few choice selections of trees, grasses, and shrubs that come back year after year and require little upkeep: crepe myrtles, Knockout Roses, oriental fountain grass, switchgrass, and Sweetbay Magnolias. A row of 16'

Cryptomeria trees (a fast-growing evergreen) was planted along the property line for added privacy. “Pools are a combination of art and science,” states Prokopchak. “Pools are a work of art. You look at it more than you use it, and it gives you a nice view.” The science is in the engineering that goes into creating the environment. With this exquisitely engineered landscape, living becomes a work of art. AH

OASIS IN THE VALLEY By Christine Fillat | Photography courtesy of McHale Landscape Design Vol. 6, No. 3 2015 31

In the rolling verdant hills of Green Spring Valley, Maryland, this home promises of fun times with swimming and splashing, evenings of plein air dining, and the crackle of a bonfire. The estate fully integrates a pool and outdoor activity area with the living areas of the house. But you absolutely wouldn’t know there was a pool here, unless you were to walk over to the iron fence on the side of the house and look past the boxwood hedge, into the garden. This is due to the careful consideration of landscape designer Hans Bleinberger of McHale Landscape Design; the placement is seamless and pleasing in its arrangement. Siting a pool on this property was not without its challenges. Limited by the location of a septic field

32

Annapolis Home

in the middle of the garden, Bleinberger put the pool as close to the side of the house as allowed by Baltimore County, carving out the slope to accommodate the pool and making it even with the ground level of the house. Such placement has the added appeal of making this corner lot private to the outside world.

“We try to use as many native plants as we can.” Hans Bleinberger,

McHale Landscape Design

Sourced with locally quarried Butler stone, the pool deck, retaining walls, and planters have a quintessentially Baltimore look. Three fountains pour from the retaining wall, as though the green spring were filling the pool from the valley. The shot crete pool is coated with Ocean Blue Pebble Sheen finish, rendering the water sparkling blue. The detail trim throughout is a Pennsylvania bluestone. At 20' by 20', this L-shaped pool is deep enough for diving, with an area for lap swimming. A graceful arc is built into the pool’s shallow area. Placed on axis with the garden gate, it provides the ideal spot for conversation. The pool deck becomes a patio right up to the base of the house. Here you will find all the

accoutrements for enjoying outdoor life. An open porch gives access from the house to the patio. Beneath the porch is a comfortable shaded outdoor living area with upholstered couches and chairs. This turns out to be the favorite area for the family to gather. Just a few steps away, a kitchen island is equipped with all the basic needs for outdoor dining with a refrigerator, grill, and seating area. Between the pool and the house is a year-round spa, situated to protect users from the wind. A 10' diameter fire circle, popular with the younger members of the family, sits just outside of the pool deck. Having once been the site of a private golf course, the estate reaps the benefits of planned

Vol. 6, No. 3 2015 33

landscaping. “There’s a lovely view,” notes Bleinberger. “There are very nice natural features because of this golf course and the way this land had been sculpted, and the trees that had been planted.” Continuing the established naturalistic plantings, Bleinberger filled the site with vegetation that is colorful and deer proof, such as daffodils, narcissus, daisies, and purple coneflower. Green Mountain Boxwoods add an air of formality. Green Giant Arborvitae, Norway Spruce, and River Birch were the choice trees throughout the property. “We try to use as many native plants as we can,” continues

Bleinberger, “I think it’s nice to have a healthy mix. We were trying to get as much diversity as we could.” A pair of American Fringe Trees flank the main entrance coming in from the drive. A perennial area by the fire circle is colorful and full of interesting shapes with Russian Sage, Knockout Roses, and Pannicum (switchgrass). The full effect of this pool and garden is that of a hidden treasure, exquisite in its design, and perfect for a family ready to share the joy of life al fresco. AH

Nantucket ∂ on the Bay

By Tom Levine | Exterior Photography by Geoffrey Hodgdon Interior Photography Courtesy of Purple Cherry Architects Vol. 6, No. 32 2015 41 PB

The community of Bay Ridge enjoys an enviable geography. Just south of Annapolis, it is surrounded by Lake Ogleton on the west and a broad expanse of the Chesapeake Bay on the east. From the air it is shaped like an arrow, pointed due east with two long stretches of beach on either side. It was founded as a summer colony, a place for residents of Baltimore and Washington to enjoy a cool breeze on a sultry day. There is still a relaxed and an informal air to the community, the kind of place where neighbors enjoy potluck suppers and children still ride bikes down the streets. The architecture is diverse but leans toward traditional and if there is a commonality among the newer houses, it is the cedar shingle. This house was designed by Annapolis architect Cathy Purple Cherry for an active family with two young daughters. It presents a symmetrical facade to the Bay but is far from formal. The husband notes, “we vacationed a lot in Nantucket,” and they wanted a house reminiscent of the island. Purple Cherry describes the house as “center entrance shingle style,” and it evokes New England coastal architecture from the late nineteenth century. The family liked older houses, the wife says that she “really wanted a traditional center hall house,” and they loved the natural stone and cedar shingles that wrap almost all of the houses on Nantucket (local ordinance forbids siding houses in anything else).

42

Annapolis Home

The house Purple Cherry designed is classic but certainly not formal. A wide and deep porch frames the front door. When you step on its stone floor, you begin to fantasize about sitting in a rocking chair whiling away the day sipping a cocktail and drinking in the big, wide watery view. The house is clad in graying cedar shingles with stone chimneys anchoring the long gambrel roof. There is a second floor window bay in a smaller gambrel that Purple Cherry jazzed up a bit with a nicely flaring skirt. The homeowners wanted a house that was not just traditional on the outside. Unlike many modern day houses where space is wide open and ceilings seem to reach the ionosphere, this one has real old fashioned rooms that are modest in scale. Everything is configured off of a central hall where a handsome staircase rises beneath a small cupola, which discreetly brings natural light to the center of the house. Guided by the family’s needs, Purple Cherry created a livable floor plan with beautiful scale, proportion, and flow. Baltimore interior designer Mona Hajj gave the space its soul. She and Purple Cherry covered every wall on the first floor with wood painted in neutral tones. It’s a detail that speaks to a refined sense of design, one that you might not even notice at first. Hajj designed detailing for the custom moldings and had tongue and groove paneling installed on the ceilings. It helps define the orientation of the rooms and is one of the elements that Hajj used to create a house that is, in her words, “very casual, timeless, and elegant.” The furniture and design are a mix of European, Asian, and Islamic antiques and the feeling is never stuffy. When a traditional dining room table threatens to force you to feel underdressed

for dinner, it gets tamed with an old tribal rug repurposed as a tablecloth. It’s lit by a vintage Turkish chandelier, a circle of hand tooled brass baskets with a teardrop crystal hanging from each. It’s a great piece and a great example of Hajj’s style marrying a bit of the Islamic world with European elements. It’s typical of the eclecticism in the design, which spills over into the kitchen where a backsplash of antique Tunisian tiles steps from a small wooden French table. The table shows not just the old history of its use but also its recent encounter with one of the family’s four dogs. The large yard provides plenty of space for the dogs, along with a pair of roosters and a small brood of chickens, the result of a kindergarten science project gone slightly amok seven years ago. Like the dogs, they are family pets and asked to do no more than supply fresh eggs. Like the rest of the property, the yard is relaxed and informal and when you’re there you could be forgiven for thinking that you are on vacation, much like everyone was in Bay Ridge one hundred years ago. Brunschwig & Fils: Zebre Indigo

Robert Allen: Carrs Hill in Mandarin

Fabricut Fabrics: Muffuletta Graphite

Having always had an affinity for nature and animal prints, this Brunschwig & Fils linen fabric for Kravet is such a fresh and beautiful take on the classic zebra print! The indigo blue color is reminiscent of the sea and the large pattern repeat makes it looks almost like an island batik.

We love the youthful energy of Robert Allen’s Carrs Hill Fabric in Mandarin. This coral fabric is fun and uplifting and the perfect choice for creating an inviting space. Highly versatile, pair it with creamy neutrals or bold colors such as blue or green.

With today’s mills, the fabrics they are turning out now could not be done in the past. This is a scroll pattern cut out by lazer and stitched to a linen background. Linen is always my classic go to fabric! Love it!

Victoria Larson: Fantuti in Navy Fantuti, by Annapolis based textile designer Victoria Larson is a fabric I absolutely love for 2015. The pattern is fluid yet graphic. It is reminiscent of Japanese fans or even sea shells and it would work beautifully in a contemporary, coastal or classic design. The pattern is beautifully screen printed on linen and can be custom colored. Available locally through Dream House Studios.

THE FOYER THE UNOFFICIAL INTRODUCTION TO YOUR HOME By Katalin Farnady Photography by Geoffrey Hogdgon The foyer does it all. It is the first room anyone steps into when entering your home and is a place to welcome visitors. It sets the stage for what is to come next. I like to call it the unofficial introduction to a home’s overall design style. When you are thinking about foyer design, the first thing to do is to consider the activities that go on when you and others enter your home. Figure out what space, furniture, and storage are needed to make everything flow smoothly. Then, you can nail down that important “first impression.” I always suggest a piece of furniture, lighting, mirror, art, sculpture, wall finish, or all of the above. Choose things that you like and that reflect your lifestyle. This foyer expresses the homeowners’ free-spirited style and openness to experimentation. The monochrome wall design (done by Christine Nicole Productions) is a perfect backdrop for a simple modern sculptural oversized center table. This houses many collectible items along with a vintage brass table lamp. Always, there are fresh flowers. When one enters, one senses what the homeowner is all about and the great attention to detail. To the right of the foyer are two colorful artworks. These invite your discovery and set the tone for a love for art that is also a huge part of the representation of this home. Your foyer presents a great opportunity so have fun with it. Remember, you never get a chance to make another first impression. Regardless of the size, it is one of the best places to express yourself and introduce your visitors to what is waiting for them behind the other walls.

Farnady Interiors: farnadyinteriors.com Christine Nicole Productions: christinenicoleproductions.com Born and raised in Hungary, Katalin Farndy is an interior designer in Annapolis. In addition to her love of fine design, she has a great passion for art and world travel.

Extraordinary Real Estate

Wroxeter-on-Severn survives as one of the finest turn-of-the-century examples of the English Tudor Revival style in Maryland and dates back to the Edwardian era.

Wroxeter-on-Severn For Sale

Annapolis Home

The home was bought in 1992 for approximately three million dollars, modernized, and restored to its former elegance by sales executive Jim Bowersox, who sold it at auction in 1997.

There are a few colossal estates in Annapolis that everyone seems to know about. Often, they are shrouded in mystique, whether earned or not. Wroxeter-on-Severn, a twenty-two plus room brick mansion overlooking the Severn, has earned its place in Annapolis history. Twice, it has fallen into ruin, but survives today as a historic landmark and “an outstanding and highly

intact example of Tudor Revival-style architecture in Maryland, according to Maryland State Archives. Built in 1909, the ten-bedroom mansion was designed by Philadelphia architect Guy King for Edwin Pugh Baugh, an industrial magnate, and his wife Grace Howard Munnikhuysen. On their five-hundred-acre estate, they entertained lavishly in the grand style of the era, aided by four live-in

10,000 sq. ft. of living space includes butlers’ quarters, billiard room, music room, two kitchens, and seven fireplaces. servants. In 1921, things fell apart. At the age of fifty-seven, Baugh died suddenly of a stomach hemorrhage during a business trip to Philadelphia. When Baugh died, his wife remarried and leased out the house, which became a hotel called The Inn at Rugby Hall. The inn folded after World War II. Eventually, it was purchased by a retired military man and turned into Wroxeter School for Boys. Locals in Severna Park and Arnold remember the prep school for its beauty as well as its star lacrosse teams producing formidable athletes recruited by top colleges. The school closed in 1979 and the property was virtually abandoned until rescued in 1992 by Jim Bowersox. Bowersox purchased the home for approximately three million dollars and restored it to much of its former splendor. Today, the mansion is privately owned by a federal technology CEO and used infrequently. It went on sale April 1 and is listed by Day Weitzman of Coldwell Banker for 6,499,000.

Weitzman notes that the mansion has many astonishing features, including a

tunnel leading to the guesthouse and two attics. “The basement and the attics really tell the different stories of Wroxeter. The tunnel between the main house and the guest quarters is probably where the ‘help’ accessed the main house and the kitchen was probably in the basement. Certainly the coal was stored in the basement and supposedly there were stables below. The attics speak to the period when Wroxeter was a school and the rooms might have been dorm rooms,” says Weitzman. It is not surprising that Weitzman, a topproducing agent who has sold many multimillion dollar homes, notes that, in her experience, the water views and living space are unmatched in Annapolis.

Straight Up on Dining Out

OCEAN TO TABLE At Fiola Mare

By Kymberly Taylor | Photography by Greg Powers Dining at a five-star restaurant should be an adventure and exquisite culinary experience—both are found at Fiola Mare in Georgetown. We arrived at twilight and were seated in an alcove with a side view of the canal. A grand bar behind us, semi-lit and lined with gleaming stem wear, exuded the sense of promise characterizing bars frequented by Washington’s power elite. In this genteel yet charged atmosphere, we ordered Caviar de Venise for the table. This Siberian sturgeon was served with chive biscuits and finely sliced egg. Its buttery, nutty flavor had a hint of the ocean; a slight taste of iodine lingered on the palate. In other words: it was addicting. My guests had grilled trout and cod; my partner and I both ordered a dish aptly named “Under the Sea.” This entrée is composed of branzino, Maine lobster, langoustine, scallop, mussels,

foie gras, quinoa, maitake mushrooms, and parmigiano dashi. The seafood was glistening and still flushed, as if hauled up from the ocean hours earlier. The evening had a leisurely European tempo; our dishes appeared and disappeared at just the right moments and chitchat was minimal. There was just one problem: the portions overall were small. I must admit, I expected abbondanza, especially when I read “parmigiano dashi.” There was an upside; we had plenty of room for dessert. We indulged in a whole berry tart that arrived warm and wrapped in a rustic, cheerful cloth. This delicacy, served with ice cream, made up for any previous shortfalls. All was forgiven.

IS AMERICA PREPARED TO RETIRE? Two-thirds of us have no financial plan. 64% of Americans have no financial strategy at all. That’s right—no plan whatsoever to build wealth or keep it. Only 17% of us have a written financial plan that is updated regularly. So congratulate yourself if you are in that group. Just 38% of the 36% having written financial plans retain a financial advisor. The really troubling part: 37% of those with written plans are doing their financial planning on their own. Another 12% of respondents with written plans have consulted a friendor family member who isn’t a financial services professional for advice. How much planning have you done? Retiring without a financial plan is an enormous risk; retiring with a financial plan that hasn’t been reviewed in several years is also chancy. A relationship with a financial advisor can help to bring you up to date about what you need to do, and provide you with more clarity and confidence when it comes to the financial future.

RPS regularly hosts free dinner seminars to enable you to learn more about planning for retirement and how RPS can help. We also offer a variety of events for our clients and guests throughout the year.
