Steve Ziger, AIA, a founding partner of Ziger/Snead Architects, has extensive experience with planning, institutional, cultural, educational, religious and historic renovation/reuse projects. As principal in charge of design, Steve is responsible for maintaining design excellence for the firm’s projects. Among his major projects are the Brown Center at the Maryland Institute College of Art, the Baltimore Design School, Parks and People Foundation’s One Park Master Plan, and recent renovations of Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts and the Baltimore Museum of Art.
Jay Jenkins is the president of Jenkins Baer Associates, a premier interior design firm, and a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art. Accomplished in virtually every type of design project—residential, commercial, retail and hospitality—Jay’s work can be seen locally, across the country and internationally. Jay also dedicates his time to many causes, primarily to the Baltimore School for the Arts, where he serves as a member of the Board of Overseers.
Carol Macht, RLA, FASLA holds a Bachelor of Arts with a major in architecture from Washington University in St. Louis and a Master of Landscape Architecture from the University of Michigan. During her years of practice, Carol has worked on awardwinning projects including contemporary urban parks and plazas, educational and healthcare campuses, and private gardens. BY KYMBERLY TAYLOR | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVID BURROUGHS Mathematicians find beauty, even eloquence, in certain equations such as Albert Einstein’s E = mc2 that with poetic brevity equates energy with mass. Philosopher and theoretician Bertrand Russell goes as far as to say: “Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty—” To architect Scarlett Breeding, whose residential project on the Magothy River won three grand prizes, math is not just beautiful but a solid foundation for her soaring vision and a fundamental design principle. For instance, for this project she began with the form of a simple Chesapeake Bay cottage and then proceeded to add and subtract. “Walls and even ceilings were ‘subtracted’ and replaced with pure, unobstructed glass,” she notes. She explains that traditional cottages were often expanded vertically with simple shed dormers and living spaces added on over time. With this “additive” principle in mind, her team expanded the cottage form and organized living, entertaining and sleeping spaces around the vista of the water. Using an almost transparent geometry of steel, stone and glass, she broke down traditional barriers between indoor and outdoor spaces. “The interweaving of solid and transparent planes effortlessly create the visual connections and privacies the spaces require,” says Breeding. Designed by Richard T. Anuszkiewicz, executive director of the firm’s Kitchen and Bath division,

the kitchen earned its grand prize for its wellplanned space, spare beauty and ability to function at a high mechanical and intuitive level. There is no visible hardware and appliances are placed to appear as a geometrical collage. The sculptural atmosphere continues with the kitchen island, a plinth of solid, polished quartzite. A dining space has a moving wall of glass that opens to the waterfront. Inside and outside of this kitchen, as with the rest of the home, the river is always present. Glass walls conduct raw energy from sun, sky and water that charge the interior daily. The fine line between the visible and invisible, between inside and out is manifest in the home’s construction by Pyramid Builders, which won a grand prize for its artful custom building elements. Glass walls in the dining room lift effortlessly and slide away; insect screens are integrated discretely into the structural beams; a stone plinth geothermal floor seamlessly connects inside and outside. It is not every day a single project wins three prizes. What does this home possess that is truly special? It may be its invisible architecture born in the structure’s first drawings and calculations. At its center is a well-conceived plan, an equation that unfolds gracefully into a home. Balance becomes ornamentation. Here is a beautiful math restful to the body and soul.

COMBINING CONTEMPORARY FLAIR WITH TIMELESS DESIGN BY CAROL SORGEN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PETE ALBERT Situated on historic Eastern Shore farmland, our award winner for Custom Building is this guest “barn” built by Lynbrook of Annapolis. “The story line the homeowners wanted to convey is that these guest quarters were added to an existing barn,” says Lynbrook president Raymond Gauthier. “They wanted a house that not only utilized the farm’s prime location but also gave the appearance of having been on the property for generations.” On the exterior, stained vertical cedar boards and traditional metal roofing replicate old materials that would once have been found on a barn. Similarly, the foundation is built to resemble simple block piers as some barns do. The custom-designed 26-foot-tall barn doors slide completely open, “peeling away the barn’s skin” to reveal a glass entry into a living space combining the kitchen, dining room and large gathering room. From the entry, the stunning view extends to the Wye Narrows that lies beyond. Inside, open shelving and a fumed oak island countertop highlight the kitchen, while custom beam rope lighting adds to the barn theme in the dining area. To the rear of the home, the three-story living space features a glass wall constructed by Hope’s Windows, whose work also graces such landmarks as Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater. Further emphasizing the home’s barnlike appearance is traditional timber framing from Lancaster County Timber Frames. A 6-foot-round steel buoy converted into a light, custom lighting in the rafters, and a rotating wood burning stove enhance the living space and add to the comfort of the room. From the kitchen a smaller sliding barn door opens to the white oak interior silo where a circular staircase leads to the second-floor balcony. This “challenging” aspect of the project involved removing the silo roof so that the staircase, pre-constructed of 4-inch-thick oak treads, could be lowered by crane into the space, after which the roof was securely reattached.

AQUA TERRA BY ROBERT HAYWOOD | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVID BURROUGHS When I visited Dr. Wayne and Lori Anderson at their home, I observed on his office table a large book on Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural masterpiece, Fallingwater (1936–39). Wright designed a home that is at once distinct from nature in its strong geometrical forms and at one with nature in that it is built over a powerful waterfall and sited in a thick forest of trees and shrubs. Clearly the Andersons desired a pool house that infused their home’s exterior with the thrilling pleasure of falling water, while enriching the property, which overlooks Harness Creek. Designed by Purple Cherry Architects, the pool house has a rustic elegance. The Andersons put together a first-rate design and construction team, including Pyramid Builders, Campion Hruby Landscape Architects, Walnut Hill Landscape Company and Interior Concepts. Unlike the common pool house with gabled roofs, this one is a clean rectangular form of stone, Spanish cedar and glass. The pool house is located on the side of the main residence so that it is not front and center, keeping clear views from the interior house of Harness Creek. The goal was to create a space that could be used throughout the year, which the team achieved by building three distinct areas. One is an outdoor living and dining area. Another is a meditation space consisting of a 12-by-12 glass cube, next to a luxurious stone bathhouse complete with a glass tiled spa shower and changing room. Pyramid Builders’ craftsmen fabricated the mahogany lattice door that serves as the connection from the changing room to the outdoor shower, as well as the timber and beam ceilings. A stone wall, punctuated with waterfall features, extends along the far side of the pool, concealing the pool equipment and providing a privacy screen from neighbors. The impressive hardscape installation is the work of Walnut Hill Landscape Company. WEEKEND GETAWAY TO FULL-TIME HOME BY CAROL SORGEN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVID BURROUGHS This charming waterfront home located in the community of Bay Ridge in Annapolis is our award-winner for interior design. Interior Concepts, Inc., has created a warm and welcoming home that currently serves the family well as a weekend retreat but will be a comfortable space when it eventually becomes their primary residence. This home, inspired by Nantucket-style architecture, was designed by Purple Cherry Architects and built by Pilli Custom Homes, with the kitchen designed by Design Solutions, Inc. Taking their lead from the homeowners who wanted a “relaxed-formal” family home with classic traditional features, Interior Concepts created a design that incorporates light whitewashed colorations for traditional rugs and fabrics in neutral tones accented in blue. Hardwood case pieces and clean-lined upholstery and light fixtures give the rooms a contemporary yet timeless aesthetic. In the kitchen, handmade subway tiles in cobalt blue were installed to provide a dramatic backdrop to the off-white glazed cabinetry. The center breakfast table was also colored in the same strong blue, an unexpected departure from the more expected wood table. The walls and complex millwork trim throughout the house are painted in neutral tones with crisp off-white detailing. In the dining room, strong, hand-painted striae in Wedgewood blue with taupe undertones provide an understated setting that complements the rich wood furnishings and elegant gold-leaf and crystal chandelier. In the living room, comfortable lounge seating was arranged to take advantage of the sweeping views of the Chesapeake Bay, as well as to bring focus on the fireplace with the television placed above in custom millwork. “The homeowners gave us simple and direct guidelines,” says Interior Concepts founder and president Arlene Critzos. “Always comfort, always good wood, and always a quiet sophistication.” With those guidelines in mind, Interior Concepts has designed a home that can seamlessly transition from vacation getaway to full-time family home.

A KITCHEN MADE FOR ENTERTAINING BY CAROL SORGEN The new owner of an historic Victorian-era row house in Washington, D.C. knew that the home was long overdue for an update. High on his wish list was an open space for entertaining that combined a modern aesthetic with a warm, inviting ambience. This renovation, our award-winner for Kitchen Design was undertaken by custom builder ThinkMakeBuild. A mix of classic features is retained in this contemporary renovation, designed by Washington, D.C.–based architect Richard Loosle-Ortega of KUBE Architecture, who successfully teamed old and new materials, and indoor and outdoor spaces. The home’s previous kitchen was isolated from the main space by a wall, which was subsequently removed. The first floor was modified to create an open plan that flows toward the new kitchen and onto a wall of windows, leading to an elevated rear deck with a courtyard below. Exposed brick remains while several load-bearing walls were replaced by exposed steel girders above. The rear wall was also replaced with a large sliding glass door system that both physically and visually links the new rear deck with the interior spaces. The focal point of the kitchen is the 15-foot striated Carrara marble island countertop with waterfall edge that defines the formal and informal gathering and dining spaces. “The island is purposely angled so as not to create a ‘bowling alley’ effect,’” says LoosleOrtega. The angle also allows for the creation of a cooking zone on one end with an entertainment zone at the other. Rich colors from the natural raw materials contrast with the custom glossy white cabinets and Caesarstone kitchen countertops. The remaining interior wall remains neutral in color, with door panels that conceal a powder room and coat closet, while simultaneously acting as partial stair rail. Dark-stained bamboo floors and LED ceiling lights create a warm glow that truly makes this kitchen the heart of the home. “While this project was technically challenging given the constraints of the existing space, the collaboration between owner, architect, and builder resulted in an extraordinary outcome,” says Darren Kornas, founder of ThinkMakeBuild.

The original house, the size of a double-wide trailer, is today a vertical structure with multiple stories. On top is a pool and all exterior elements, such as decks, porches, terraces and mechanical systems. Architect Mark McInturff calls it “a modern ark with 1664 square feet of interior space.” McInturff had no choice but to build straight up, due to strict guidelines regulating new building on the Chesapeake Bay. “The allowable footprint for everything on the site— everything—is sized to the ruins of a previous house, long gone but excavated, surveyed and documented,” he says.

Composed of cross-braced steel moment-resisting frames (a construction method in use for hundreds of years) the home is unified by its all-white interior. The first floor is an open concept design with a wall of sliding doors. A winding stair rises to two stacked bedrooms and continues to the rooftop pool. On the exterior, white cedar shingles and stainless steel weather naturally. Situated on a quiet cove on the Eastern Shore, the compact home, with pool and entertaining spaces on the roof, is much like a nest on top of tree. Its modern sensibility refreshes and complements the Shore’s distinct vernacular.

DESIGN EXCELLENCE: ARCHITECTURE, OUTBUILDING Purple Cherry Architects
With decorative trusses, exposed stained wood and hand hewn beams, this 35,000-square-foot timber frame barn has the nostalgic look of an old farm structure but it is brand new, designed by Cathy Purple Cherry to house the owner’s antique car and motorcycle collections and memorabilia. The barn complements the owners 14,000-square-foot home located on a 5-acre property on Aberdeen Creek. Inside, a polished concrete floor leads to french doors that open to the waterside terrace and screened porch. There is a first floor powder room with stainless steel diamond-plated walls and a vanity fabricated
to look like a mechanic’s workbench. There is a real workshop outfitted with professional-grade machines and tools as well as a lift bay and larger bay holding the collection. The second floor studio has larger retractable glass doors with stainless steel cables visible from the showroom below. In this outbuilding there is a rare connection between form and function. The car collection, meticulously maintained, is housed by a structure with a spotless façade, sound construction and balanced composition. Something beautiful holds something equally beautiful inside.

The roots of this remodeled home on Back Creek can be traced to an 1800s waterman’s cottage. Though it was rotting on its minimal foundation, 50 percent of the original structure had to be retained, according to regulations protecting historic Annapolis properties. With this in mind, 50 percent of the home was jacked up, stabilized, and reset on a new foundation with full basement. Its 19th-century street façade was restored and a front porch, removed many years ago, restored. The main level is an open space with the waterside end wall completely transparent. The upper level, technically a “half story” is the owner’s private office, a domain with a bird’s nest view of distant freighter anchorages on the Chesapeake Bay.

The home rising from the quiet banks of Solitude Creek is composed of pure rectangles. Built by ThinkMakeBuild and designed by architect Robert M. Gurney, FAIA, the preexisting home, a Dutch Colonial–style structure, was right in the middle of a flood plain. The new home, built in its exact footprint, has a foundation elevated by two feet. A covered entry porch is cantilevered beyond the foundation but does not exceed the dimensions of the preexisting stoop. Gurney is a proponent of “thoughtful architecture,” homes that are thoughtfully ordered, meticulously detailed, sensitive to site and that encourage sensual gratification and ecological awareness. This is achieved. Vertical floor-toceiling window walls and a dynamic floor plan stir the senses as the home fades from light to dark and vice versa, depending on seasons and weathers. In addition, Gurney has altered the height of its doors to encourage an experience that differs from homes with ordinary dimensions.

Movement is a formal device in this home situated on a half acre of waterfront land on the South River. What it means specifically is that pathways inside and outside are designed to manipulate the occupant’s vantage point, revealing at different times the land’s foreground, middle ground and background. One is exposed continuously to land, water and sky as they move about. As one ascends and descends the stair, a “dynamic experience” is encouraged. Views are framed in ways that reveal unexpected perspectives of the outside as well as upper and lower floors. The home is owned by a local surgeon, Dr. Craig Vander Kolk, who collaborated for five years with the architect, sharing concepts and testing ideas. Brad Lundberg, with precision and finesse, was able to interpret the owner’s and architect’s program to build this unique wood framed structure with steel back-ups.

EXCELLENCE IN CUSTOM BUILDING Lynbrook of Annapolis
Lynbrook of Annapolis knows that there is an art to building a brand new house that looks regal and weathered. The techniques are described in detail in Russell Versaci’s book Creating a New Old House. The book was the inspiration for a “new” 18th-century style home Lynbrook built in Ferry Point in Annapolis for clients who worked also with architect Scarlett Breeding. After much research, they created an 18th-century look with handmade bricks and oyster shell mortar for the chimneys, slate and lead-coated copper roofing, semi-coursed stone techniques and timber brackets on the carriage house.

No detail was ignored. Vintage barn beams of wormy chestnut were hand hewn and repurposed into an elegant library. In true American tradition, a 19th-century addition was built directly on to the main home. On the far side of the main house nestled in the trees is a conservatory with a cathedral ceiling and lead paneled glass. There is a surprise. Hidden on its lower level is a very contemporary feature: a basketball court used often by the active family.

EXCELLENCE IN CUSTOM BUILDING Lang and Company
This Murray Hill home had a charming exterior but its interior spaces were uninspiring and compartmentalized, with a small square formal dining room wedged between the breakfast room and living room. The owners, with a growing extended family, needed help and hired Rich Lang of Lang and Company to reorganize the space, creating an open floor plan. A major challenge, says Lang, was to redistribute plumbing, heating and air conditioning and transform the dysfunctional warren of rooms into a flowing interior both beautiful and easy to maneuver. To open up circulation, Lang
and his team removed 85 percent of walls and ceilings on the first level. The stairwell wall was opened up and replaced with rails and balusters to encourage natural light. All original finishes were stripped and unique millwork added or integrated artfully into walls and ceilings. There is now a full coffered ceiling in the enlarged dining room. Its new banquet-style table can seat twelve and is complimented by a built-in pantry and new fireplace. Without enlarging the home or reconfiguring its footprint, Lang was able to transform a lackluster interior to one full of grace and personality.

The 1950s-era three-story home on Eastport’s Horn Point had gorgeous views sadly hidden by its dark and dated interior, typical to the midcentury. It lacked a “certain something” notes architect Leo Wilson who was hired to open up and reconfigure the interior so sparkling waters could be appreciated fully and to reimagine the exterior to create a contemporary nautical haven. Wilson added a friendly covered entrance that anchored the home in the neighborhood. It opens right onto a first floor with new dining, kitchen and living spaces that connect and draw the eye to a window wall

facing the Severn River. The waterway outside is part of the home’s daily cycle. Its views are ever changing since it is traversed daily year round by waterfowl, racing sailboats and watercraft of all sizes. Unfortunately, the Severn’s beauty could not be fully absorbed due to the home’s unsophisticated master suite whose only access to the water was a cramped balcony. Wilson added transom windows to a wall separating bedroom from bath and added more windows to the bath. He flattened the roof to create an expansive deck so the entire suite and home is a tranquil retreat open to water, boats and sky.

This three-story row house with a narrow and dark interior has been transformed by a creative feature: a shaft of natural light. ThinkMakeBuild and the architect figured out how to embed clear structural glass panels on sections of floor on all three stories. By aligning these beneath a large skylight, they ensured that light can travel through the home from roof to basement on a bright day. The glass floor can be lit with LED lights on dark days. There were structural challenges: a floor system was devised. Thick glass panels were set into reinforced brackets and made flush with tile and hardwood floor surfaces. In the master bath, a glass panel is next to a shower and had to be watertight. Large sliding doors and more frosted glass panels on the upper level floors beckon additional light into the home.

With a client who wanted nothing less than a transformation, Gina Fitzsimmons got right to work redecorating living room, dining area and master bedroom. A single mother with three grown children, her client was ready to embrace the next phase of her life. “We settled on a warm and comfortable transitional look with just a touch of the Chesapeake in materials and fixtures,” notes Fitzsimmons. They began in the living room, creating a built-in for a long wall. To encourage a “boathouse architecture and relaxed feel” she added shiplap, the familiar wooden board used for barns, sheds and outbuildings.

They chose casual furnishings adding two extra “overflow” seating areas for family and guests. What unifies the room are details such as dark espresso wood accents, creams and a driftwood finish, explains Fitzsimmons. Master bedroom and dining areas are equally refreshed, with mixed finishes in the dining room to add contrast and eco-friendly seating and soft window treatments in the master bedroom. Varied blues and neutral hues appear and disappear throughout the home mirroring the waterfront’s ever-changing light.

A young family constructing their contemporary dream home with expansive water views asked Kitchen Encounters and Farnady Interiors to create a sleek modern kitchen with a chic Miami–South Beach vibe. The joy and challenge, notes Farnady, was to bring definition to a large open space that had to serve many functions. The palette included a combination of warm gray, taupe and white to evoke the water and sky on a rainy day. They are a neutral foil to pops of color from art and accessories. The final design incorporates cooking, dining, sitting and entertaining. Each area is clearly defined by function and flows together seamlessly with adjoining areas. The T-shaped island divides the kitchen from the informal dining space with seating for seven. A floating, sculptural light fixture further defines the area. The entire scheme is grounded by large-scale white marble tile flooring, in true Miami fashion.

Before its makeover, this traditional kitchen in a luxury high-rise condo was awkward with a large angled peninsula that housed the sink and separated the kitchen from the living room. The homeowners wanted a contemporary working space and turned to Joni Zimmerman of Design Solutions for help. Despite construction constraints and inconvenient plumbing, she built a new wall, repositioned the sink and eliminated the peninsula entirely, opening up the space. She left cooktops in the same position but shifted ovens to an unused wall and added a coffee and beverage center. After eliminating trouble spots, it was time for some glamour. “I used a high gloss white cabinet material and matte finished walnut to create a contemporary feel that is dramatic but warm,� she says. Now, ease replaces awkwardness. Wall cabinets on the cooktop wall open upward at the touch of a finger and close down the same way. The kitchen is ready for friends, family and new traditions.

DESIGN EXCELLENCE: MASTER BATH REMODEL Lisa Publicover Interior Design
The purpose of the project was to renovate a dated master bath and create a clean design that complemented the architecture of the client’s deck house. Because the client is retired from the Navy, Lisa Publicover created a space one might find on a luxury yacht. The use of soft brass plumbing fixtures, the seamless lines of the vanity area and the tile walls in the tub area all contribute to that feeling. To incorporate the wood tones of the deck house, she chose a wood with a strong linear grain and positioned the grain horizontally, visually lengthening the space. An architectural freestanding tub is surrounded by shoji screens backlit from all sides to create a soft wash of light. This design works because “form follows function,” says Publicover. “If a space does not function well for those living in it, it doesn’t matter how attractive it is.” With this in mind, materials are easy to care for, in tune with the airy spirit of the house.

DESIGN EXCELLENCE: HARDSCAPE McHale Landscape Design
This Eastern Shore weekend home on a narrow lot suffered from bland suburban plantings and needed a landscape and hardscape that would infuse it with an Eastern Shore character. The owners turned to McHale Landscape to design an inviting entry leading guests to the front door and to also help with the water side of the house. They wanted a pool and attractive outdoor living space while observing strict zoning laws prohibiting building within 100 feet of the water. McHale designed a walk, landscape and steps using Pennsylvania flagstone in a full color range, set in a random rectangular pattern and a pool pushed as close to the 100-foot buffer as possible. Every piece of stone was cut to ensure that it was square and butted tight with the next piece to create a clean sharp appearance. Plantings are simple in design to complement the hardscape and architecture instead of compete with it. Throughout, plantings are used much like paints, reinforcing the lines of hardscape and offering a succession of flowers throughout the spring and summer.

Walnut Hill Landscape Company created a lush private retreat for the residents of this home overlooking the South River. Wood, stone and plantings are situated thoughtfully to create unique spaces within the landscape that is transformed dramatically by pergola, pool, and stone stairs framed by planters mounted on stone columns. Scenic vistas were improved and created by clearing up an overgrown steep waterfront slope. Walnut Hill’s team removed and pruned select trees and invasive species and then installed native grasses, perennials, shrubs and trees. Installation of 80-yearold boxwoods required much finesse as they were installed with an overhead crane. As guests approach the home in late spring they are welcomed by Giant Allium, Salvia, and Knockout Roses whose fragrance and astonishing beauty combine to enchant.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD J AY G R A H A M | M O O DY G R A H A M Jay Graham, a Maryland native, graduated in 1972 from the University of Virginia with a degree in architecture. In his first full-time job in that industry, he was seated near a landscape architect. “It didn’t take me long to realize he was having all the fun,” Jay says. He also held the belief that the space between buildings was often as impactful as the buildings themselves. So it was back to UVA for a master’s degree in their new landscape architecture program—where he even worked on a project for the grounds of that legendary beautiful campus. Eight years later, he returned to head up the same firm where he had started as an architect. In 1984 he went out on his own. “Fortunately I had contacts with some developers and most of my work came from relationships with architects,” he explains. “I speak their language and can make their projects better. That was the basis for my career.” And it’s a career served by an especially “green” resume. Jay’s work can be seen at residential communities, lavish private homes and farms, academic institutions, as well as cultural and public places. Ever been to Wye Hall in Queenstown, Maryland? Then you have enjoyed his efforts. The same can be said for the U.S. Naval Academy Visitor Center, St. Mary’s College of Maryland, the University of Virginia School of Law, Government House in Annapolis (the official residence of the governor of Maryland), BWI
Airport, as well as private homes in Georgetown, Chevy Chase and Cathedral Heights, among many others. Jay has recently joined forces to form a new firm, Moody Graham, in D.C., focusing on landscape architecture, garden design and ecological planning for private and public clients. Mentoring is also a big part of Jay Graham’s agenda. “It’s been the best part of my career and the most gratifying part of the profession,” he says. And mentoring begins at home in his world. Jay’s daughter is now a landscape architect practicing with a firm in Colorado. Jay was born in Baltimore but now lives in Annapolis (“You know you are a local when you can find a good parking space,” he explains cheerfully). He considers himself a perpetual student. He’s expanding his knowledge about plants and their origins. He loves to use indigenous plants, no matter where the project is located. “There is still so much more to learn about native plants so [that] they can be used to a greater extent.” Now that the seed has been planted, there will be no stopping Jay Graham. Speaking with Brian Fleming, the owner of Compass Stone and Tile Studio, is a reassuring experience. He’s a well-established local businessman who loves what he does for a living and where he does it. He has owned Compass Stone and Title Studio for five years, but he has been in the Maryland area for more than 25 years—“I have been here more than half my life,” he says proudly. Originally from central Pennsylvania, Brian started out selling barbecue grills. One Sunday, when the store was closed but he was inside working, he saw two gentlemen approach the front door. They didn’t want to bother him if the shop was closed. No problem, he insisted, and invited them in. He sold them each a grill. Afterward they asked if he had ever thought
about selling anything else. By Monday, he had an interview and by Wednesday he had a firm offer. A true tile man was born. “I love what I do—and dealing with the customers. When you actually can help someone, it’s very rewarding.” Brian lives in Crownsville with his wife Debbie Potter (an accomplished attorney practicing in the Maryland/D.C. area). They have three children (two already out of college and one a freshman at Archbishop Spalding). They also have dozens of surrogate kids thanks to years of sponsoring midshipmen from the Naval Academy— including the entire hockey team when his nephew was on the squad!

Perhaps you’ve passed the white brick building on the corner of Chinquapin Round Road and Margaret Avenue in the heart of the Annapolis Design District. It’s, literally, a standout. An entire wall is painted with a playful mural of the Annapolis waterfront. The services provided there by the Sanders family are also a standout. John Sanders, working with his father Jock, is just the latest Sanders to lend his expertise to the world of windows and doors. He is fourth generation in the business (in fact, his given name is John Sanders IV) his great-grandfather started in the 1930s. (The fifth generation, John’s two sons, are only 5 and 8 years old, so their career choices have yet to crystallize.)
“We are providing solutions for architecturally designed homes, as well as light commercial and institution applications,” John explains. Restaurants, churches and schools also display Loewen products. In fact, you have probably looked out through one of their windows in the area—such as Bridges Restaurant on Kent Narrows. Her family business is something in which she takes great pride. “I started working for my father in 1991 at one of his stores in the Baltimore area,” she explains. “I recognized the need for high-end products on display, something seldom seen in that day and age.”
Another point of pride is her certified minority-owned business status (a real tax advantage for her customers), and the caliber of her employees (now including her son Christopher). “People who work for me are career appliance people. We have to be trained in the ins and outs of what we do,” Linda says.
Anne Arundel County proved to be the ideal location for her own business. She saw the potential of the area, including the need to accommodate remodeled waterfront properties. She correctly reasoned, “We need a showroom that displays all the brands. If you have everything [the customers] want, why [would they] go anywhere

Started 12 years ago by Charlie Koppels, In Home Stone has grown from two employees to 44 today. The facility itself has expanded from 6,000 to 40,000 square feet. Now that is Growth, with a capital G. Charlie went to school in Boston and was looking for employment in sales after graduation. He got a job with a granite company (New England is known for its granite). “I enjoy the interaction with the customers and I enjoy seeing the finished product—from how it’s quarried to how it’s shipped,” he says. After he married his wife, a nurse who graduated from Georgetown, and who grew up in Maryland, he opened his own business in Annapolis. He is a man who knows and loves his field. In fact, he has just returned
from a trip to Carrara, Italy, where he visited the famous marble quarry that has been in operation since Michelangelo’s time.. In Home Stone imports products from all over the world and the United States. They also have a marvelous selection of tiles, countertops and wall materials for showers and baths. And they know that home renovations often depend on finding just the right material to replace that tired Formica. They also come in very handy in solving any hard surface dilemma; for instance, the granite counter that has to be re-cut to accommodate the new cooktop or faucets you just could not resist. In 1992, newlywed Walt Neese and his wife were deep into renovations on their home in Baltimore. Selecting the right hardware (for doors, cabinets, bathroom accessories, etc.) became a priority. The owner of the store they were dealing with was so helpful to the young couple they ended up returning the favor by helping him expand the store, which began a three-year partnership. Neese eventually took over the operation. As renowned architect Mies van der Rohe once said, “God is in the details,” decorative hardware is all about the details. And it is Walt Neese’s pleasure and calling to guide contractors and homeowners in
their search for just the right touch. “If there weren’t picky people,” he confides, “then we wouldn’t be in business.” His professional journey led, in 2005, to opening WalterWorks Hardware in Annapolis. There he has thrived through knowledge and hard work. Neese puts it simply: “The key to success has been our willingness to stand behind what we sell.” The approximately 3,000-square-foot showroom is a testament to good taste and innovation. Roughly 75 percent of his customers are designers, architects or contractors. But with Walt Neese’s assistance, any of us can be experts.

From a small seed, a great oak grows. It is much the same with Pyramid Builders, a custom building company in Annapolis that began with one employee and a couple of jobs in 1985 and in 2017 celebrates 32 years of business employing 70 highly trained craftsmen and professionals. What were the early days like? “I founded Pyramid with less than a thousand dollars and a relentless work ethic. The first 15 years I really don’t remember. It was a blur of working every waking moment,” recalls Bret Anderson. His days are still a blur for he continues to build some of the most distinguished homes in the region.
