Bye bye, boot camp. Adios, no pain, no gain. Fuhgeddabout feeling the burn. The latest fitness craze is all about having fun getting fit. The idea is to have so much fun you don’t realize your muffin top is melting right off your waistline. After a delicious summer quenched with one too many margaritas, I needed help kick-starting a healthier routine. Despite keeping an eye on my diet and walking enough miles on a treadmill to propel me to Miami, the zipper on my jeans remained challenged. I needed a mental makeover, too. Sometimes it takes a change of scenery to recharge the spirit, so I headed to the Lodge at Woodloch in northeast Pennsylvania to rejuvenate both body and soul. If you think all the best spas are out west, think again. Sure, there are great spas in more exotic locales, but getting there involves long flights, altitude adjustment, and jet lag. The Lodge at Woodloch provides the same first-class spa amenities without air travel hassles—toss your workout gear in the car, hop on Interstate 83 to 81, and head north. (Or take the train to New York and arrange for their car and driver to pick you up at the station—my favorite way to arrive.) The heart of the resort is tucked away on 150 pristine wooded acres around a picture-perfect lake. The place attracts high-profile New Yorkers who enjoy the combination of tranquility, fitness, fine dining, and first-rate spa treatments. My blood pressure drops upon arrival. The entry’s three oversized chakra bowls displayed on a handcarved wooden base create a mood that is instantly calming. I pick up a gong and mindlessly circle the rim of each bowl producing tranquilizing, hypnotic sounds. Guests pass by, some wearing hiking boots, others in spa slippers. All wear contented grins. Here, less is perfect. With just 57 guest rooms, the resort is intimate. Every room—yes, every room, from the dining room to the exercise rooms to the guest rooms—has magnificent views of the great outdoors from floor-to-ceiling windows. The lodge’s six fireplaces dotted about are flanked by sink-into leather furniture, ideal retreats for my frequent breaks between classes. And coffee, tea, fresh fruit, nuts, and snacks are always within reach. I feel like I’m a guest at a friend’s private estate rather than a spa resort.

Meals feature creative organic fare packed with plenty of pleasure. While menu choices are healthful, the chef doesn’t get hung up on calorie counting. The kitchen is dessert-friendly, too. My scrumptious chocolate cake is “petite,” but the diet police would never approve of it. The chef ’s philosophy seems to be, do not deprive, eat less. The spa has all the expected bells and whistles plus some unique features, such as an aqua garden with therapeutic soaking pools, hydro-massage Water Walls surrounded by native boulders, an indoor pool, an outdoor infinity-edged whirlpool, and a Whisper Lounge with walls of windows that boast an expansive field of trees. I could take a guided hike or go mountain biking or kayaking or play tennis or golf, but I opt for fun classes—drumming, Bollywood, and ballet. “They’re better than any aerobics class,” says a petite woman. She neglects to tell me how challenging they are. The minute I grasp the drum sticks—the percussion variety, not turkey—I am hooked. I immediately tap everything in sight. I am not alone. Everyone else is tapping right along with me, and the class hasn’t even started. Before we begin, each of us stands in front of our “drums.” Well, they’re not exactly drums. Our “instruments” are large exercise balls anchored to stands so they won’t budge. Between whacking our pseudo drums in unison, we perform jumping jacks or other high intensity cardio moves. Pulsating sounds, plenty of laughter, and lots of calorie-burning fill the hour. 18 LOOKING GOOD
Belly dancing brings a change of tune—and mood. Grown women wearing colorful coin-trimmed sarongs gyrate and grind. For a moment I fear I’ll wind up on YouTube. Inhibitions are quickly released as everyone gets into the groove. In ballet class, I’m the clumsy Black Swan as I struggle with my demipliés and arabesques. Since the classes wake up muscles that have long been dormant, each afternoon I head to the therapeutic Water Wall, where the force of the cascading hot water envelopes my aching body. Or I take refuge in the Whisper Lounge, where ssssssshhh is the only sound allowed. Or I get a massage or rosemary salt scrub. I leave no hot stone unturned. After four glorious days, I leave for home a rested, unwound woman. So often the shortest trips yield the best self-discoveries. While I’m still savoring my renewed inner peace, I’m also celebrating the joy of learning new exercise routines. So next time you stroll by my house, if you peek in my window, you just might catch me belly dancing around my kitchen. Resources: Lodge at Woodloch: www.thelodgeatwoodloch.com

“We may not have to hunt down our food like we once did, but the human body needs, in fact, yearns for movement and exercise.”
24 LOOKING GOOD
Nine months ago I became a father. I remember seeing our newborn son, Frankie, and holding him in those first few hours. It was surreal. My life from that moment would never be the same. To complicate matters somewhat, I had no experience with positive male role models. I’m from a single parent household. My parents were divorced when I was five so my mom, a hero in my eyes, raised four kids by herself. It made me want to be the best father possible and to be around to teach my kids how to tie shoes, ride a bike, throw a curveball, and shave. There were two main things I was going to focus on to make this happen: one was to find a good work-life balance, and the other was to make nutrition and an active lifestyle a foundation of all our lives. Yet, when he was actually born, I, like most men, felt like I needed to start working overtime or even pick up a second job. It didn’t seem like we would ever have enough money. Diapers, doctor visits, wipes, clothes, food, strollers, money, money, money! It can be overwhelming. Then I came across this quote from Louise Hart: “The best thing to spend on your children is your time.” It really rang true for me. I could spend sixty hours a week on my business and try to make a ton of money, but at what cost to my son, marriage, or my own health? More hours usually means more stress, less time at home, poor diet, no exercise, and it can lead to an unhappy marriage and resentful kids. This was definitely not a part of my plan. My profession is personal fitness training, and, less than two years ago, my wife and I moved to Annapolis for her career. I decided to start my new training business here, and anyone who has started their own company knows the amount of time it takes to get it up and running. Things were going well, but now there was a newborn in the mix! This was not going to be easy. After many long discussions with my wife, we decided to reduce the time I spent on my business to part-time so that I could be the stay-at-home dad the rest of
the time. It would take some juggling, but with the help of my wife and a nanny, we’ve been able to find a balance that has worked for our family. I found that even with a good work-life balance, once you begin caring for a child, there is not much time left for your personal health. This is why it’s important to make good nutrition and regular activity a priority every day. We have to lead by example and show our children that these healthy choices often lead to longer, happier lives. I tell my clients that 80 percent of being fit is good nutrition, which starts with eating real vegetables and fruit as opposed to processed food, and we follow that idea when we feed our baby. It started with hormone-free formula once breast milk wasn’t an option, and on to homemade purees, such as mashed up sweet potatoes and carrots. What we put into our body is essential and it’s even more important with an infant. Then there is the question: How do you fit in activity and exercise with a young child? I get asked this all the time and it’s not an easy answer. From the day we brought our son home, we made exercise a priority. Long walks are great for us both physically and mentally. Being out in nature allowed us to collect our thoughts for a second and take a break from the seemingly never-ending diaper changes! I would also put Frankie in his carrier and go out on short hikes, or, with him in the carrier, I would do some exercises such as 3 sets of 10 squats, lunges, and push-ups. That extra weight makes normal bodyweight moves challenging, and it definitely gets your heart rate going, plus Frankie loved it! Just holding your infant for long stretches can be a good workout but make sure to switch arm to arm and hip to hip. If possible, try to find a gym that offers childcare or ask your nanny to stay one extra hour so you can get your workout in. It definitely takes some creativity. You have to get your workout in when you can and if all you can carve out is 30 minutes, take it, but make it count. Lifting weights is the best way to stay fit with minimal time and allows you to stress and challenge as many major muscle groups as possible. Learn how to lift the right way. If there is one exercise everyone should be doing, it’s squats. No other exercise uses as many muscles, produces that level of central nervous system activity, improves balance and coordination, muscular stimulation and growth, connective tissue strength, and overall systemic conditioning like a full squat done correctly.
October / November 2014

It can be an air squat, a squat with your baby in the carrier, or a squat with a barbell. Just do some squats. Your body will thank you for it. In addition to squats, a push (like shoulder press, bench press, or a standard push-up) and some form of pull (pull-up, rows, or dead lifts) should be done. These exercises need to be done correctly so if you’re unsure, find a qualified coach to teach you the basics before going on your own. A sample workout might be squats, shoulder press, and rows: complete three sets of each movement using a dumbbell weight you think you can do for 10–12 reps. If you are able to do 20+ reps consecutively, the weight is too light; conversely if you can only do 3–5 reps the weight is too heavy. If you don’t have access to any weights you can do bodyweight exercises like air squats, push-ups, and front planks. For 30 seconds do as many squats as possible, and then rest for 30 seconds. Next do as many push-ups as possible in 30 seconds, and rest for 30 seconds. And finally, for 30 seconds hold a front plank position, and rest 30 seconds. You can do this for a specific number of rounds, as many rounds as you can, or for a set amount of time. Stuck in the office or hotel while traveling? No problem, you can do the three exercises I just explained, adding lunges and sit-ups, plus with an office chair you can do dips and step-ups! That’s seven highly effective exercises requiring nothing more than that chair you’ve been holding down all day. Do the same time scheme too, 30 seconds of work followed by 30 seconds of rest.
Remember, we’re setting an example for our kids so even when it’s not a typical “workout” you can take advantage of your non-exercise activity training (NEAT). This is all that extra movement you can do during your day such as standing instead of sitting, walking or biking vs. driving, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or parking further away than usual. There is always a way to get in some kind of activity and movement. Remember that sometimes simple is better. Bodyweight movements like we’ve discussed are great and can be done anywhere, and any movement you do is better than sitting and doing nothing. We are designed to move. We may not have to hunt down our food like we once did, but the human body (mind, bone, muscle) needs, in fact, yearns for movement and exercise. One hour is only 4 percent of your day. You can find the time but you have to decide it’s a priority. I’m 38 years old, which means I’m going to have to take good care of myself if I ever want to be around to see potential grandkids. If you are not motivated to exercise for yourself, then start doing it for your kid’s or grandkid’s sake. Now get up and MOVE!

DOCTOR’S
VISIT
Restoring Breasts & After Mastectomies By Kymberly Taylor Elizabeth Anderson had to act fast when she learned she had advanced breast cancer in April 2009. Just one month after her diagnosis, she had a bilateral mastectomy, a surgery removing both of her breasts. “With a stage 3 diagnosis, it was either breasts or life. There was no decision to be made. I had to take them off,” recalls Anderson, a 47-year-old fitness instructor from Naples, Florida. Anderson says when she first learned about bilateral breast reconstruction, she turned to the web for more information and located a surgery center that could remove fat from her buttocks. She went for a consultation and learned she had to gain 23 pounds in order to have enough excess fat to form C cups, one size smaller than she had before cancer. After living without breasts for 18 months, she finally got them back on October 21. Anderson will need one more surgery, a butt lift to close the gap where fat was removed, but for now she says her battle against cancer has come full circle. “Gotcha cancer! You took them from me, but I’ve got them back!” Anderson says. “It’s amazing what doctors can do today. I’m absolutely thrilled I can just be normal. That’s all I want, is to be normal again.” It is important to have realistic expectations, says Dr. James Chappell, a surgeon specializing in breast reconstruction and body contouring. “I tell a woman I am not giving you your breast back, I cannot give you your breast back, but I am giving you a breast mound, something that looks as close as I can to real.” He sets forth three levels of expectations: “The first is that you are going to look good in clothing. The next level is that you are going to look as good as possible in a bathing suit. The third is you are going to look good naked.”
Understanding the Basics of Rebuilding Breasts
Dr. Chappell explains that, in most cases, breast reconstructive surgery typically involves inserting saline-filled silicone implants into the chest area to make up for breast tissue removed during mastectomy. Breast reconstructive surgery can be done at the same time as the mastectomy or afterwards. Most patients do better if they have October / November 2014

their breasts reconstructed immediately after their mastectomy, while still on the operating table, he believes, though every doctor and patient must decide this together. Many factors are part of the decision, such as what stage the cancer is in and whether the patient will undergo chemotherapy and radiation. There is another procedure, which involves taking fat from your abdomen, back, or thigh, and using that to rebuild the actual breast. Often, when fat is taken from the tummy or buttocks, a tummy tuck or butt lift is performed when the gaps or flaps are closed. These are lengthier procedures, with much longer recovery times, but some women like to know that their new breasts are made from their own tissue, says Chappell. The areolae and nipples can be reconstructed in addition to surrounding breast tissue. Areola and nipple reconstruction is typically done as a separate surgical procedure after the breast mound has been reconstructed. It is optional, and some women choose to forgo it. Areola and nipple reconstruction is typically done by taking tissue from the buttocks, eyelids, or other areas, and using it to form a new areola and nipple. Tattoos are sometimes
used to get the new areola to match the color of the areola on the other breast. Success with areola and nipple reconstruction greatly depends on the skill of the surgeon conducting the procedure.
The Healing Process
Different women recover from breast reconstructive implant surgery at different rates. Typically, most patients can resume their normal activities between two and four weeks. Complete recovery from surgery takes a lot longer. Women recovering from surgery need to make sure they minimize stress and watch their sodium intake. Minimizing sodium may help with post-surgery swelling. Recovering from the psychological trauma induced by breast cancer is difficult, but breast reconstruction can offer a lot of hope to women suffering from the loss of one of their breasts. Breast reconstructive surgery is far from perfect but can greatly improve the lives of women that have experienced mastectomies. With more advances in technology, breast reconstructive surgery should become more affordable and a real option for many more women.
If you’re interested in learning more about breast reconstruction options and the risks associated with the various procedures, both the American Cancer Society and the Susan G. Komen Foundation answer questions about breast reconstruction after mastectomy on their websites. American Cancer Society: www.cancer.org Susan G. Komen Foundation: ww5.komen.org 32 LOOKING GOOD

This past August, the Baltimore AFR Showcase Networker design challenge was held at Mosaic Nightclub and Lounge at Power Plant Live in Baltimore. Organized by AFR’s Taylor Dabney, the festive event included lavish decor and lighting, live music, painted models, and an aerial performer. The design challenge featured two businesses, Flowers and Fancies and My Flower Box, with the latter winning the competition. Using AFR furnishings and working with existing fixtures, the designers were charged with transforming the space into a spectacular environment.
Confident Feel More
About Your Smile
A two-part piece on how cosmetic dentistry can help you love your smile. By Kymberly Taylor Feeling confident about your smile isn’t easy to do when your teeth have experienced irreversible damage such as chipping, cracking, and yellowing. Unfortunately, this lack of confidence can make some people reluctant to participate in events and activities. It can hinder you at work and even cause mild depression. This is a natural reaction when your teeth don’t look their best. Today, however, there is help. Cosmetic dentistry enhances smiles by using specialized procedures that whiten, reshape, and transform the appearance of the teeth. Most importantly, though, a good dentist specializing in cosmetic dentistry does much more than just whiten teeth. He or she will evaluate your teeth to assess not just the health of your mouth, but also the health of your overall body. A routine dental exam should be the first step in your quest to restyle your smile. It may reveal problems with your bones, heart, blood sugar, or digestion because certain warning signs live inside your mouth. Dr. Brian Valle of Millersville, Maryland, points to particulars. “You may think your teeth are decaying or that your gums are recessing because of age. However, your teeth could also reflect a gastroesophageal reflux disease…in an acidic environment caused by a condition such as this, teeth may decay or erode more quickly,” he notes. His comments parallel the findings by a study from the College of Dentistry of Columbia University stating that oral exams can reveal undiagnosed medical conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.
Teeth Whitening for the Wow Factor
You’ve been to the dentist and now are ready for action. If you want to remove years of staining and yellowing, what really works the best? This depends on the results you want. Over-thecounter treatments such as white strips will lighten your teeth somewhat but may not be as efficient or yield the same results as take-home whitening trays prepared for you by your dentist. When saliva comes into contact with a white strip, the material loses its effectiveness, explains Dr. Valle. In addition, the solution used in white strips is not as strong as what your dentist can prescribe. “When providing you with a take-home kit customized to fit your teeth, a good dentist will use a prescription-strength
peroxide with a desensitizing agent, to minimize any sensitivity that could occur during or after the whitening process.” Dr. Valle notes. “He or she will take impressions of your teeth and fabricate a tray that molds to your teeth to minimize any leakage. In a sense, the trays protect them from your saliva. So the whitening agents work much better. Also, keep in mind that white strips may successfully whiten your front teeth, while the trays whiten your entire smile. This is what can give you the ‘wow’ factor.”
Dental Veneers
Veneers, porcelain or plastic, are a consideration when whitening does not work or when teeth have mild gaps or are worn down, broken, misaligned, uneven, or irregularly shaped. Porcelain veneers are thin pieces of porcelain cemented individually onto your teeth. They recreate the natural look of teeth, while also providing strength and resilience comparable to natural tooth enamel. Because veneers are individually sculpted for each patient, it is nearly impossible to tell the difference between a veneer and a natural tooth. Unlike natural teeth, custom-made veneers resist stains from coffee, tea, and cigarette smoke because they are made of high-tech materials. Another good thing about veneers is that, during the fitting process, your natural teeth remain largely intact. With crowns, you must often sacrifice more of your actual tooth. If you’re reading this article, you’re on the right track. Did you know that a healthy smile may actually prevent disease? A new study presented at the annual meeting of the American Heart Association found that people who received regular teeth cleanings had a 24 percent lower risk of heart attack and a 13 percent lower risk of stroke compared to people who didn’t get such dental care. Good dental health is a reflection of well-being—and how well you take care of your teeth may reflect how well you take care of the rest of your body. So go ahead, flash your new smile. You’ll have real confidence, grounded in good health.

Indian-Infused Nuptials | May 2nd, 2014 Ronojoy Sen, whose family is from Bengal, India, and Anneke, born in Maryland, wove Indian wedding rituals into their big day on May 2, 2014. The bride was bedecked in a Lehenga, a traditional Indian wedding dress, designed and sewn by Rupa Vora in Studio East6 in Chicago. The couple exchanged flower garlands three times, chanting Indian promises to respect each other as partners, in addition to their official vows. The flowers, designed by Little House of Flowers, infused the evening with purple and silver shades, Anneke’s favorite colors. Pia Noon of I Do For You performed the civil ceremony at The Westin Annapolis. A ballroom was festooned with elegant tables, and elephants, a traditional Asian symbol of strength and wisdom, appeared on wedding invitations, place cards and presided outside the ballroom door, and kissed by entwining their trunks at the tip-top of the wedding cake. Thoroughly American hip-hop tunes kept the guests dancing most of the night, ensuring the evening was one that neither an elephant, nor anyone else, will forget.
