Ever wonder what these extraordinary pilots do to stay in shape mentally and physically? We asked them to share their nutrition and fitness regimes.

ON NUTRITION

… salads with fresh veggies and protein, and healthy snacks throughout the day like nuts, hummus, carrots, peppers. On the road, we’ll work out in the morning and hunt for protein smoothies or hearty breakfasts. We try to eat and work out together and you better believe that when bread, sweets, sodas or desserts show up at the table, some old-fashioned naval aviation–style ribbing ensues. Energy bars show up here and there, but aren’t a regular part of our diet.

For most of us, our diet would be described as “paleo-light Mediterranean,” avoiding simple carbohydrates, “cheat days” and processed food, concentrating on complex carbs, fresh produce and protein. We’re all on the same “naturalist” page. Calorie intake, especially while training in El Centro and flying, is easily in excess of 4,000 calories daily, so regular nutrition throughout the day is essential for G-tolerance and focus. This is easier said than done on the road during the air show season, but a few pilots go through the effort of meal prep for the weekend and bring along a big cooler. With three kids at home, I haven’t found the time to execute to that level. At home in Pensacola I like a veggie/fruit/protein smoothie in the morning and oatmeal with coconut oil. I may take a multivitamin once weekly. Our lunches look similar

I am a huge believer in the new research showing a link between our diet, our gut (microbiome) and our physical and mental health. I also limit antibiotic use as much as possible, not only for antibiotic resistance ramifications but also the deleterious effects on the microbiome.

ON STAYING FOCUSED LCDR Matt Suyderhoud, Former Blue Angels No. 2 Right Wing Pilot

Focus is all about discipline. Working out cultivates that. If you can force yourself to endure a strenuous workout, especially when you don’t want to do it, it will build your mental fortitude. It also allows for a release because you are doing something totally different than work. Focusing purely on flying, purely on the mental gymnastics of the flight demonstration, is dull and actually hurts performance in the end. Having a physical release and mental break from that is very healthy and it rejuvenates you.


ON STAYING PHYSICALLY FIT CMDR Andy Talbott, Former Blue Angels No. 4 Slot Pilot

We work out six days a week for 45 to 90 minutes per session. We are required to do this to combat the “G-Forces.” I execute a mixture of heavy weightlifting and conditioning. I hit all the muscle groups at least once a week. I concentrate on my core every day and legs twice a week. I run a lot of sprints and stairs, execute sled pushes, burpees, box jumps, lunges, double unders, etc. The sprints will consist of yo-yo/suicide sprints. I also run a mile as fast as I can to the point of failure. For legs, I super-set squats, front squats, and overhead squats; as well as lunges, overhead lunges, and leg press. I do five sets of five, utilizing anywhere from 245 to 275 pounds for the squats. For the lunges, I utilize 95 pounds and work my way up to 135 pounds. For overhead lunges I use lighter weight, 70 to 90 pounds. For the leg presses, I start with two 45-pound plates on each side and add one additional plate on each side for every set. For the next set of exercises, I will super-set dead lifts and calf raises, four sets with eight to 12 reps each; super-set leg extensions and curls; and finish with sled pushes. This is an example of one workout. I switch it up and will do cleans, snatch, hang clean and jerk [body builder language for weightlifting moves]. For other muscle groups, I do a similar amount of exercises, sets and reps, concentrating on form to improve overall strength. A lot of times we work out with fellow teammates. I think it is important to work out with partners to push each other and motivate one another.

ON ACHIEVING MENTAL FOCUS LCDR Schwartz

We eat together, work out together, talk about work and life together and even go to church and Mass together. As we approach each flight our time becomes protected from the outside world. We show up at least an hour prior to a brief. We look at weather and talk to each other to see what attitudes and motivation levels are for the day. I interact with each pilot to see how they feel, how they slept, how energetic they are. We protect our time before the demo. Some of us call this “cowboy time,” but it’s really time to relax and prep. We must be in the room sanitized of any extra personnel 10 minutes prior to a brief. Five minutes prior we are in our seats. For the final minute before every brief there is complete silence. It’s powerful. It focuses all of us on the dangerous task at hand and gets us on the same page. LG

aterfront architecture on the Chesapeake Bay is both a unique challenge and, of course, a grand and special opportunity. No person has better refined the art of addressing both of these aspects than Scarlett Breeding. A principal in the firm Alt Breeding Schwarz Architects, Scarlett has spent over two decades directing and coordinating a team of architects, civil engineers, interior designers, landscape architects, builders, artisans, and landscapers in the production of over 150 works of residential artistry and timeless beauty. For many, if not most of these projects, the first order of business was a creative analysis of the restrictive Critical Area Law and constructive negotiations with county permitting agents. Variances are hard to come by, but Scarlett Breeding has a batting average that makes her a contender for The World Series. Scarlett quickly mastered the new law in detail and soon began giving seminars to realtors and other design professionals. r. Justin Cashman has experienced orthopedics as an athlete, treating surgeon, and patient. At Emory University, he concentrated on traumatic foot and ankle reconstruction while serving as an orthopedic trauma surgeon at Grady Memorial Hospital, a Level I trauma center. Dr. Cashman earned his biochemistry degree from the University of Virginia and his medical degree from George Washington University. He recently attained his MBA from George Washington University, where he was inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma, the business school academic honor society. Dr. Cashman is Board-certified in orthopedic surgery, and a member of multiple orthopedic societies. He is a Paul Harris Fellow in The Annapolis Rotary Club, a Leadership Anne Arundel graduate, and is involved with several nonprofit charities and multiple youth sports activities—often coaching his children’s sports teams. BIG RESULTS By Dale barr

Being out of shape and overweight can be stigmatizing. You’re reminded of it each day when you look in the mirror and put on clothes. Television and magazines pound unattainable images of good-looking fit people into our minds multiple times throughout the day. It’s no wonder it takes such a big mental and emotional toll on us. When these images end up being our ideal, we have created a mountain that cannot be climbed. Every January, I see people take on grand New Year’s resolutions in a quest for their perfect self. While these efforts are noble, only about one percent of people actually stick to whatever program or changes they’ve started. You’ve probably seen it yourself: your local gym packed with new people eager to make changes for the first six to eight weeks of the year. But by March it’s back to business as usual. That’s because it’s tough to change habits that have been formed over decades. People typically take on too much, too soon. It is more effective to start with modest changes that allow you to make long-term adjustments to your habits and routines. Trying to add in a new exercise routine while also trying to make changes to a diet is a huge undertaking. If there isn’t an immediate sense of progress, negativity creeps in and the goal seems out of reach. By making small changes in my own life, I moved from exercising sporadically and eating poorly to becoming a fitness coach. And at 40 years old, I’m as fit as I have ever been. Before I decided I was going to quit my desk job and become a trainer it was important to me to “walk the walk.” I didn’t want to be a trainer or coach who couldn’t follow my own advice. I certainly didn’t go from A to Z with a snap

of the fingers like you see advertised with a diet or exercise fad. I was commuting two to three hours a day and sitting in an office for eight hours a day. Yikes! Ten plus hours a day of sitting at a desk under constant stress and living on a poor diet caused me to gain weight and have unbearable migraines. I decided to start small. My modest goal was to add 30 minutes of any type of exercise, three times a week. I joined a small little gym down the street that I passed by to and from work every day. I had no workout plan. My only goal was to get to the gym—even if it was to walk on a treadmill. I focused on this behavior change and the process of getting to the gym rather than some large, overwhelming outcome like obtaining a perfect body. If I got to the gym, I considered it a win. I just needed to start moving again. Most weeks I did the minimum of three 30-minute visits, but other times I got in an extra fourth or fifth time. Sometimes I stayed 60 minutes, and of course I missed some. If I missed a visit, I didn’t beat myself up or dwell on it. I immediately forgot about it and moved on. Over those first few months I really started to feel better. It was odd, but each visit made it easier to get there the next time. It created this domino effect of healthier choices outside the gym, too. I wasn’t staying out as late or drinking as much because I didn’t want to miss my gym time. If I did drink or stay out late, I made myself suck it up and go to the gym anyway. I really hated those days. Many years later while studying behavior change, I learned that LASTING behavior change is best done little by little by creating Tiny

Habits. Dr. B.J. Fogg, a behavior expert at Stanford University, has created a behavior model that shows that for a behavior to occur, three things must be present: motivation, ability and a trigger (B= MAT). I had unknowingly followed this model in my own experience. I had really wanted to add in a new behavior—exercise—so my motivation was high. The goal of three visits and nothing more made my ability to accomplish it very high. My trigger was that I passed this gym twice a day. I had followed an ideal plan, by accident mind you, to create a lasting behavior. Simplicity matters more than motivation, so keep the new behavior simple. Once you achieve your newly desired behavior congratulate

yourself—affirmative emotions help create these habits. While seeming silly and irrelevant, congratulating yourself is a huge key to how fast you form habits. Success leads to success. Whatever the larger end goal, it will always come down to small daily habits like getting enough sleep, eating a healthy breakfast or going to the gym. You have to follow the day-to-day program and build. Tie your happiness to the PROCESS instead of the achievement of your goal. So with summer now here, don’t fall into the trap of a large abstract goal like getting pool ready. Instead, find something small you can attach to an existing routine. By focusing on the behavior change itself and the process, you can develop long-lasting healthy habits. LG

Ovary Conservation

BY HAWTHORNE HAYWOOD Hundreds of thousands of women a year have elective bilateral oophorectomy, the removal of both ovaries. But a groundbreaking study published in the May 2009 issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology reversed prevailing wisdom and said healthy women should hang on to their ovaries–the benefits they provide outweigh the risks they pose. Pre- and post-menopausal ovaries make important hormones that help you stay healthy and live longer. Women without their ovaries are at higher risk for heart disease, lung disease and osteoporosis than women who have them, notes study author Dr. William Parker, a staff gynecologist at Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. In his report, which incorporated 20 years of published data from various sources, he and his team found that, “Compared with ovarian conservation (keeping your ovaries), bilateral oophorectomy at the time of hysterectomy for benign disease is associated with a decreased risk of breast and ovarian cancer, but an increased risk of all-cause mortality, fatal and nonfatal coronary heart disease, and lung cancer.”

For years, to prevent ovarian cancer—which affects 1 in 73 women a year—doctors have routinely removed the ovaries during a hysterectomy. “It was common in women past child bearing age, but now our thinking is changing,” explains Dr. Radon. She notes that doctors now know that healthy ovaries continue to make small amounts of hormones for a woman’s entire life—especially testosterone— which can affect sexuality and well-being. She points out that ovarian testosterone and androstenedione (both hormones) have been found in some women in their 80s. Muscle and fat cells turn testosterone into circulating estrogen, in turn protecting against heart disease and osteoporosis. Dr. Radon agrees that for women who are carriers of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations, ovary removal can reduce the risk of breast and ovarian cancer by around 80%. However, for healthy women, the ovary is not dispensable and deserves protection. In his study, Dr. Parker concludes, “Preventive surgery should not be performed if it does not clearly benefit the patient; Given that approximately 300,000 U.S. women per year undergo elective oophorectomy, these findings have important public health implications.” It is an exciting time, notes Dr. Radon, to practice women’s health, a specialty she chose because it allows her to care for her patients throughout their lives. Today, women’s health is burgeoning. The ovary is in the news and we look forward to future developments. LG

Whether swimming or not, use some form of a reparative and moisturing conditioner as well. Malibu treatments at your local salon once a month will make a huge difference. In the sun, someone with colored hair should generally wear a hat. But if this is not your style, use a product with a UV protectant to help such as Kerastase Huile Celeste. It's a shimmering protective care "leave in" for hair exposed to the sun. Always remember to take care of your hair, especially in the summer, when it is prone to extreme damage by sun and chlorine. Secret

No More

The first call came while Lisa and her husband, Dick, were relaxing after work in their Annapolis Historic District home. At the time, Lisa was President of Anne Arundel Medical Center’s foundation and Dick, a retired lawyer and former mayor of Annapolis, was involved in a variety of post-retirement activities. When the call came in, sunlight slanting through the library windows burnished the copper-colored Oriental carpet to a warmth that reflected only the sense of well being commonplace in the Hillman household. But that evening, Lisa listened to the voice on the other end of the line with confusion, disbelief and then the first inklings of fear. The caller was one of their son, Jacob’s, favorite high school teachers. He was calling to give the Hillmans a heads up. Apparently Jake was smoking pot and drinking alcohol. A lot. Lisa was stunned. Her son taking drugs? Drinking? “We’re a good family,” she thought. “Jake is going to graduate, go to a great college, and become the responsible and inspired leader he was born to be.” Teenagers. In theory they experiment but surely not Jake. Still, the call was such a direct and specific warning. Best case scenario? Your son is keeping things from you. Worst case? He’s in greater jeopardy than you can imagine. One of the messages in Lisa’s memoir, “Secret No More,” is that any one of us could receive a call like this. Although they would not know it then, that warning was the beginning of a sixyear journey through the fear, isolation and shame of their son’s heroin addiction. The Hillmans would never feel safe again in quite the way they had previously. A family that lived their lives openly and with a premium on honesty was about to be tested, educated and ultimately transformed. Addiction, the Hillmans would learn, is a great equalizer. For loved ones struggling with this disease there is no “us” and “them”—no “good” families and “bad” families.

Lisa loved working at AAMC. Her job required charisma, quickthinking and leadership skills, and she was extraordinarily good at it. And Lisa’s job as a mother was equally important to her. However, that job—parenting—came with no manual or mentor. In fact, Lisa’s own mother had died just before Jacob was born. Although she knew Lisa was having a baby, she didn’t live to greet Jacob, who defying all laws of chance, arrived 15 years to the day after his sister. Two children, born 15 years apart, on the same day. The auspicious timing of this unexpected child made it easy to assume his life would be a charmed extension of his parents’ lives. Like them, he would prioritize education, service, community and family. Neither Dick nor Lisa had reason to question this destiny, but addiction is an equal-opportunity predator. In fact, addiction is at an all-time high and opioid addiction—heroin in particular—is epidemic. The entire country is in the grips of an expanding crisis. The press reports that there is virtually no place in the U.S. where heroin cannot be obtained within 15 minutes of a phone call. Chances are if you are reading this story, you know someone whose life has been touched by addiction. The cover of “Secret No More” is a photo of Jake as a one-year-old child. Yes, he was a teenager when he became addicted, but through the first years of this struggle his mother still saw him as a child in need of her protection. It is, in fact, the underlying frustration of the book: why isn’t my mother-love enough to save you? This book has two gifts for anyone who loves a person addicted to any substance. One: the gift of normalizing the problem. Nice kids take drugs. People from happy homes take drugs. People with profound moral values become addicted. “Secret No More” makes the reader understand that addiction is an illness, a wiring of brain chemistry, not a character flaw. The second gift is this: relapses are the norm, not the end of the world. They happen, and often more than once. Put your disappointment and drama into moving on. There’s perhaps a third gift


in this book as well. The reminder to those who love an addict that you didn’t cause and you can’t cure this illness. This is a vitally important message to parents who may overidentify with their addicted children. Jacob did eventually turn his life around. He now lives in Florida and is in the business of recovery and rehabilitation, educating addicts and those who love them. He often speaks before families that are in the place his family once was: scared, desperate and confused. He has arrived by a circuitous route to the place his parents imagined for him when he was born: a position of responsibility and leadership, doing good work in the world. The phone rings and it’s Jake. He calls often now. Lisa’s face lights up; she beams, really. We all love our children but the one who was lost, well, a near-miss tenderizes every interaction from then on. “I love you” forever echoes, “and almost lost you.” It makes the joy of that love perhaps more intense because it carries with it the knowledge that no one is safe from loss—there is no “us” or “them.” Lisa took the worst thing that ever happened to her and to someone she loved, and fought through to the other side. She wants to help you get to the other side too. This is not a “how-to-recover” book. This is a “how-it-happened-to-us” book. It is a comfort and a companion to those struggling because this account demonstrates that recovery is possible, and that it has been possible for people you know. “Secret No More” provides real reason for optimism. As Lisa writes, no matter how bad things are, “where there is life, there is hope.” LG

WITH CHEF JONATHAN SENINGEN EXECUTIVE CHEF, BLACKWALL HITCH PHOTOGRAPHY BY GEOFFREY HODGDON

A graduate of The French Culinary Institute in New York—now renamed the International Culinary Center (ICC) with its program expansion into Italian, Spanish, and Wine Studies—Chef Jonathan Seningen spent four years in New York City working at renowned restaurants before returning to Washington, D.C. to train under Chef Yannick Cam of Le Paradou. During his time in D.C., Seningen was chef at OYA, Hook, SAX, and Elizabeth’s Gone Raw. He then opened DIRT, a farmto-table fast-casual eatery in Miami. Upon returning home to Maryland, Seningen came on board as the Executive Chef at Blackwall Hitch– Annapolis in 2016.

LOOKING GOOD: Why did you want to become a chef? CHEF SENINGEN: I started working in restaurants on Maryland’s Eastern Shore when I was 15 years old. I graduated from The French Culinary Institute and trained in New York’s top kitchens before moving Washington, D.C. to train under Chef Yannick Cam at Le Paradou. At that point I’d been cooking for over 10 years and set my mind to become a chef. LG: How do you define Chesapeake cooking (special flavors, seasonings, etc.)? CS: Put Old Bay on everything! Kidding! Use regional seafood and fresh produce and don’t try to make it something it’s not. Simple, fresh food prepared simply. Fresh grilled peaches and tomatoes; figs and fresh spicy greens; grilled blue fish with lots of oregano; whole fried flounder; corn roasted in its husk; lots of oysters and game when they’re in season. Keep it fresh and work with the natural flavors. LG: What is the secret to a great crab cake? CS: Use your mother’s recipe and don’t screw it up. Aside from that, don’t overthink it. Don’t go too heavy on the binding agents—eggs and mayo—use just enough to hold the crab together. LG: What is your favorite dish at Blackwall Hitch? CS: Since our menus change with the season, I like many things. With the daily chef ’s specials and the chef ’s table wine dinner each month, I’m able to present foods not normally seen on the menu. I enjoy the food and discussion with guests and testing culinary boundaries. LG: How do you order a healthy meal at any restaurant? CS: Well, if you have a specific diet request or eating lifestyle, I always recommend calling in advance. If you want to eat healthy anywhere, eat clean foods—no butter sauces, fried food, cream, processed things, etc.—just simple cooked protein and vegetables.
