Our patients deserve the Best and get the Best!
Welcome to our holiday issue! We are excited to share our creative experiment with you. We called forth the expertise of master hair and makeup artists for David Alexander: Renee Kaplan and Jamie Myrick. Both were given complete artistic license to create a fantasy Snow Queen, in honor of the holidays, and to showcase new looks for the upcoming New Year’s celebrations. David Hartcorn masterminded the photography and set for this shoot and was a central part of this endeavor’s driving vision. His terrific studio team was priceless in handling the technical issues and nuances. Our thanks to David Alexander Salon & Spa and Morgan McCloud of Chic Communications. We also thank the designers, local models, Paula McCloud of the recently opened Sandro Ferrone store, and Wendy Rabyn of Wrabyn. We hope you enjoy the issue and our other fresh offerings, including a local nutritionist with her own juice creations and cookbook, elegant watches celebrating America’s Cup, and the ethereal fashion of Naeem Khan. Editor’s note: Looking Good Magazine regrets the error appearing in the Top Plastic Surgeons & Medi-Spas section of its October/November issue. We indicated that all the doctors listed were “Board Certified,” which was incorrect and an oversimplification. The American Board of Medical Specialties provides information on the highest standards of board certification. You can search any of the specializations to see if your doctor is not merely certified but, most importantly, American Board Certified. Please visit abms.org.

COVER TREND FEATHER WEATHER Feathers are one of fashion’s oldest accessories. Since the eleventh century or possibly earlier, they have been worn as emblems of power, wealth, fragility, bravado, and sexuality. They became a staple of aristocratic dress in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and were adopted by both sophisticates and cabaret performers alike in the 1920s. Luckily for us, feathers are back in and reinvented once again. Playful and glamorous, worn on catwalks and city streets, they are a great way to lighten up the dark days of winter.

Questions
to Ask
When Selecting a Surgeon By Kymberly Taylor Choosing a surgeon? Keep in mind that education, American Board certification, and specialty and subspecialty training are important yardsticks. Request a resume and a list of board certifications from your doctor’s office. Study these carefully to make an informed decision to ensure the doctor is formally trained. In this way, you may minimize risk and set yourself up for the best possible outcome. Compose a list of questions and be sure to include the following: IS THE CANDIDATE CERTIFIED BY THE AMERICAN BOARD OF PLASTIC SURGERY? Why is it so important to have a board-certified plastic surgeon? Because legally any doctor is permitted to do any procedure. For example, a psychiatrist could do a tummy tuck. A pediatrician could perform a breast augmentation. The list goes on. Unfortunately, there are doctors performing operations without proper training and certification. You may get lucky and have a good experience. Or, you may not. In the world of medicine, there are many certifying boards and one can become easily confused. There is no need for this. If you are having a plastic surgical procedure done, you should choose a plastic surgeon who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (or the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery if the procedure is limited to the face.) If you are having your gallbladder removed you should have a surgeon who is certified by the American Board of General Surgery. Board certification acknowledges that this doctor has completed formal training in an accredited residency program. In addition to medical school, he or she has completed a minimum of three to five years of training in general surgery, and, in the case of plastic surgery, an additional two to three years of training in plastic and reconstructive surgery. The doctor has taken, and passed, both the written and oral examinations in the field of plastic surgery. Also, these candidates must continue to stay current in plastic surgical training by completing continuing medical education credits and obtaining recertification by the board every ten years. LOOKINGGOODMAGAZINE.COM
Some surgeons may advertise that they are a “Board Certified Plastic or Cosmetic Surgeon.” Watch out for this! They might hold board certification in general surgery, dermatology, or obstetrics, but they might not actually be board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. It is not enough to ask your surgeon if they are board certified; you must also ask with which board they hold certification. To find out if your doctor is certified, and with which board they hold certification, go to the American Board of Medical Specialties and enter your doctor’s name (abms.org). You may also go to Certification Matters, which has a patient-friendly website (certificationmatters.org). WHERE DOES SURGERY TAKE PLACE? If the plastic surgeon operates at an office or an outpatient facility, find out if it is properly licensed. According to a new law passed July 1, 2015, all facilities in Maryland that perform cosmetic surgical procedures must obtain a license from the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. It is also recommended that plastic surgery procedures be done in an accredited surgical facility.* Some examples of accrediting organizations are Medicare or AAAASF (American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities). Ask your surgeon where he or she will perform the surgery and what accreditation the center holds. WHO IS THE ANESTHESIOLOGIST? Just as you want your surgeon to be board certified by the proper board, you should also have a board certified anesthesiologist taking care of your anesthesia. This way, you can be assured that if a complication or reaction to anesthesia should occur, you will have the best possible team taking care of you and managing the emergency. WHERE DOES THE SURGEON HAVE HOSPITAL PRIVILEGES? Serious health issues may require hospitalization. At which hospital does the doctor have practicing privileges? If the doctor doesn’t have practicing privileges at the hospital of your choice, it may be a problem. If he or she doesn’t have hospital privileges at all, that’s a huge red flag, as most hospitals are required by law to do complete background checks.
that covers cosmetic surgery complications that would not be covered by the patient’s regular medical insurance. WILL YOUR PHYSICIAN BE PERFORMING THE PROCEDURE IN ITS ENTIRETY? You want assurance that a professional is taking care of you at all times. Sometimes, especially in teaching hospitals, students, residents, or nurse practitioners assist in surgery. You should understand who will be in the room during surgery and what role each person will play. Specifically, you can ask your surgeon if he or she will be doing all of the cutting and sewing, and if this surgeon will stay in the room the entire time you are there. WHO IS IN CHARGE WHEN YOUR DOCTOR IS UNAVAILABLE? Ask who will see you when the doctor is out of the office or on vacation. At times, someone else in the medical practice may fill in for your regular doctor, and you need to be comfortable with that person. DOES THE DOCTOR HAVE A CLEAN RECORD? Maryland Board of Physicians has a Disciplinary Alerts section with “New Disciplinary Alerts” containing information about physicians whose licenses have been revoked or suspended in the last five years (mbp.state.md.us/pages/ disciplinary.html). Make sure your doctor is not on this list! OFFICE HOURS? When does the doctor see patients? How can you contact the doctor in an after-hours emergency? A DOCTOR MAY HAVE STELLAR CREDENTIALS. BUT ALSO PAY ATTENTION TO HOW YOU FEEL. Will this person be sympathetic to pain and attentive to your needs postsurgery? If this matters to you, selecting a doctor with a caring attitude will help ensure a positive experience. Take along a friend or relative to pre-surgical appointments. This person may pick up on things that you do not or suggest questions you need to ask. Choosing a doctor is a very personal decision and there is no foolproof method or formula. The aforementioned guidelines are just a few ways to check out your doctor’s qualifications so you may make an informed choice. LG
HOW MUCH EXPERIENCE DOES YOUR SURGEON HAVE PERFORMING THE PROCEDURE? Ask your surgeon how many of these procedures he or she has done, and ask what the complication rate is. Complications can range from someone being unhappy with the appearance of the scar to someone having a severe infection or lifethreatening situation. You want to know that your surgeon is experienced not only in performing the procedure but also in managing the post-operative course, and that your surgeon is prepared to address any and all complications. Most plastic surgeons who are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery will have a relationship with an insurance company

Reflections ON CANCER by Governor Larry Hogan
When it comes to cancer, a person’s political persuasions are of no value or benefit. Having gone through six months of chemotherapy myself for Hodgkins Lymphoma and knowing firsthand how debilitating the treatment can be (on top of the cancer itself ), I have appreciated how public Governor Larry Hogan has been about his cancer and treatment. Recently Governor Hogan asked the pope to pray not just for him but also for all people with cancer. These gestures matter. Governor Hogan’s use of his platform to talk about cancer and chemotherapy is good for every person trying to cope with the illness. Talking about cancer publically is critical in creating awareness and support systems for those undergoing difficult and often painful treatments. We asked Governor Hogan to share with us reflections on his experience. We are grateful for his responses and celebrate that his lymphoma is now in remission. Robert Haywood, Publisher

Governor Hogan with Pope Francis
How do you handle the bad days? Working is a good distraction. For over four years, I have been on a mission to change Maryland for the better, and in November I was elected to do just that. My diagnosis doesn’t change that. Every day, I’m committed to being the best public servant I can be on behalf of the people of this great state.
What was your take-away after your meeting with the pope? Meeting Pope Francis was an incredible experience. I’ve met six different presidents in my lifetime, but that was the first time I had met a pope. To have the opportunity to receive blessings from him on behalf of all cancer patients was a true honor. He then presented me and the First Lady with rosaries blessed at the Vatican. Later in the day as I was seeing him off to his next stop, he approached me again. He looked me in the eye and grabbed my shoulders as if to say, “No, really, I mean it—I’m praying for you!” It was an amazing experience that I will never forget. LG

Bremont's America's Cup Collection
By Sarah Hagerty The British have always taken their timekeeping very seriously. There is a long tradition of precision, enhanced by artistry—from Big Ben to Stonehenge (many believe it to be a calendar of sorts, after all). Arguably, the Brits control the world’s clocks through Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). Additionally, in the eighteenth century, clockmaker John Harrison developed the first marine chronometer, a timepiece so accurate it could be used to determine longitude by means of celestial navigation. A true sea change. The sea once again features in the British timekeeping tradition with the launch of the Bremont Watch Company’s America’s Cup Collection. The British firm is partnering with the America’s Cup Event Authority and Oracle Team USA to be the Official Timing Partner of the Cup. To celebrate its involvement, Bremont has produced a special edition series of timepieces, all of which are stunning and sporty, yet elegant. Bremont first made a splash in the watch world in 2007, though the creation began in 2002. Brothers Nick and Giles English were inspired by a love of watches, flying historic aircraft, and all things mechanical. Their watches are hand built in limited numbers to perform beyond “the normal call of duty.” There’s a glamorous, barnstorming, silk-scarves-flying-inthe-breeze quality about the two thrill-seeking brothers with a family tradition in the world of aviation. They harken back

to a time when participants in extreme sports displayed a certain grace as well as guts. Just the attributes that might describe those still crewing the America’s Cup—possibly the only extreme team sport. It’s a world Giles English well understands. “I started out studying naval architecture because of my love of the sea,” he told us in his charming accent. When explaining the lure of timepieces a few years ago, Giles told a British newspaper: “We knew Britain actually had a stronger and more credible history of watchmaking than the Swiss ever had and we wanted to help reestablish it.” After five years of designing and refining, the brothers brought their watches to the marketplace in 2007. They were an almost instant, nearly unprecedented hit, embraced by discriminating consumers including many celebrities. Bremont watches can be found on many a well-known wrist: Tom Cruise, Orlando Bloom, and Ewan McGregor, to name a few. And these are not paid endorsements. Anyone wearing a Bremont bought their own, simply because they appreciated the style, endurance, and craftsmanship. Those with similar aspirations can find satisfaction at Little Treasury Jewelers in the Village at Waugh Chapel. Owner Steve Hammalian is a big supporter of the Bremont brand. “We are the sole dealer in Maryland, DC, and Virginia,” he explains proudly. “We love the brand, the people behind it. It’s a very dynamic company.”

As for the brothers, they still love to fly and sail and live on the edge (“You’ve got to live a little to enjoy life,” Giles explains), but it is now tempered by a successful business located in a dramatically converted barn in Henley-on-Thames (home of another on-the-water sports legend, the Henley Regatta) with families of their own. Both brothers have three children—especially interesting considering each brother has a set of twins. Apparently, they even favor extreme parenting. LG

Juicy DETAILS
BY SARAH HAGERTY
40 L O O K I N G G O O D M A G A Z I N E . C O M
Juicing is a wonderful way to cleanse and detox our bodies. If you are planning a post-holiday cleanse, however, it’s wise to plan ahead. Don’t go from a full on roast turkey, baked ham, walnut stuffing, mashed potato, chocolate cake, and champagne diet to liquid-only deprivation, Consiglio Ryan advises. “You will end up with a terrific headache,” she warns. It’s better to clean up your act a bit first, before you take the plunge. Whether the answer to health problems, the latest diet trend, or simply a collection of curiously green beverages, juicing is still going strong. But what does the act of juicing entail? Honest-togoodness juicing, according to local nutrition expert and author Lisa Consiglio Ryan, can only be prepared in a dedicated juicer. “If you use a blender, what you’ve made is a smoothie,” she explains. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that.) Juicing, however, is all about extracting nutrients from food and doing it in an efficient manner. This is where the juicer trumps the blender. But you needn’t spend a fortune. Perfectly acceptable juicers can be purchased for around $100 to $150. Juicing takes a direct route into our systems, with minimal digesting required. The nutrient-rich, anti-inflammatory properties of the produce go right to work. When you juice, you also get a bigger bang for the nourishment buck. “It isn’t an easy assignment to chew a whole cucumber,” Consiglio Ryan laughs. But when it’s transformed into a tasty drink with perhaps lemon, mint, ginger, or cinnamon added to enhance the flavor, it’s much easier to consume. (That’s how she starts each day.) It’s an added plus that many of these spices and herbs come with their own benefits. Ginger and cinnamon, for instance, are natural antiinflammatory agents. In juicing the goal is to have only a little bit of dryish pulp left over, indicating that as much of the nutrient-dense, enzymeinfused liquid as possible has been squeezed out of the fruits or veggies. It’s that pulp-free liquid gold that juice chasers are out to score. Start with vegetables and fruits that are “wet” by nature, “juicy fruits” and vegetables such as cucumbers, celery, pears and apples (all organic, of course). Bananas and berries are a bit of a bust, however. Save them for the smoothies. In fact, for the maximum nutrients, think more vegetables than fruits and berries. Kale, spinach, carrots, beets, fennel, parsley, and celery should be used generously. Consiglio Ryan advocates a 3 to 1 ratio of vegetables to fruits. Even raw, organic fruits still contain a lot of sugar, and in juicing you get all that sugar without the benefit of fiber. That lack of fiber, by the way, is one of the reasons that man does not live by juice alone. It’s best as a supplement or to be used in brief fasting/cleansing routines. (The entire clean eating approach is discussed in detail in Consiglio Ryan’s latest book, Go Clean, Sexy You, with more than one hundred whole food recipes that go way beyond the all-liquid variety.)
Speaking of headaches, juicing can be a powerful hangover remedy. To fight the dehydration and replenish cells try whipping up a cucumber, celery, spinach, lemon, apple, and parsley brew to banish all your regrets. But you can also take preemptive measures to prevent the hangover. There’s no better time to pull out the punch bowl than the holidays. Pouring healthy, revitalizing ingredients into the mix could improve everyone’s celebrations. A tiny dash of rum might even be used in the right spirit—but let’s admit it, our bodies are better off without the booze. We don’t need alcohol to be festive and celebratory. Picture side-by-side bowls of a berry-based red smoothie paired next to a cukey juice concoction. What could be more festive than red and green? Consiglio Ryan even has a recipe for shots. Her “Jolt” concoction includes three to four carrots, one pink grapefruit (peeled), two to three mint leaves and a quarter inch of fresh ginger root. Perfect for celebrating New Year’s Eve and guaranteed to make for a greatly improved New Year’s Day! But what about all those green drinks? It seems no matter what colorful contributions go in to the juicer, it comes out greenish. Perhaps it’s like modeling clay. Remember when you were a kid and you started out with such vivid colors of clay? And remember how you eventually ended up with a big old gray-green ball? Think of it as a whole new meaning to “going green.” LG

On a quiet day in September, Nicole (Nikki) Danzi wed Evan John Griffiths III at a venue overflowing with charm, history, and enchantment: historic St. Martin’s Church near Berlin, Maryland. Erected for Worcester Parish between 1756 and 1763, this eighteenth-century former Episcopal church is one of the most significant religious sites on the lower Eastern Shore; many consider St. Martin’s an architectural gem of Episcopal history. Inspired by the church’s four Flemish bond brick walls and windows and door openings highlighted by rubbed brick borders and jack arches, Nikki and her little sister masterminded a “classic wedding with a vintage vibe.” Its structure, composed of a massive principal rafter and king post framing system, did not need much
adornment and is complemented by colors of gray, pink, and black and feminine florals that do not overwhelm. Gray linens are mixed with antique white laces found at local antique stores, and there are touches of pale pink throughout the wedding. The bridesmaids wore black lace bohemian style dresses with delicate eyelash lace details. Nikki’s fitted white lace dress with sweetheart neckline was designed by Romona Keveza. The flowers include pale pink and sterling roses, white anemones with a black center, and white hydrangeas blended with subtle soft greens. They are truly inspired—their freshness and fragility contrasts poignantly with the church’s enduring beauty, and this seems the perfect place to celebrate the beginning of a life together. LG

Chic Beaks
By Kymberly Taylor | Photography by Sweet Bespoke Photography
Tara Jane Grier, an enterprising young mother in Silver Spring, Maryland lives on a two-acre hobby farm, complete with pig, dog, and ten chickens. Along with holding down a demanding full-time job, and raising two young boys, she tends her flock daily, rising at 5 a.m. to chop vegetables for ten gorgeous girls. Her breeds include Rhode Island Red, Welsummer, Cochin, Black Copper Maran, Bielefelder, and Ameraucana, famed for the blue and pink eggs they lay. Over the years, Tara and her boys have come to love her flock. She found her chickens had distinct personalities, comical habits, their own personal strut and cluck. She noticed, too, their astonishing beauty, visible to the naked eye and also hidden deep within their plumage. To share her fluffy beauties and their bountiful eggs with
