Dr. Paula Radon and Dr. Susan Peeler Innovator is not usually a word commonly used to describe one’s gynecologist. However, Dr. Paula Radon and Dr. Susan Peeler, founders of the Comprehensive Gynecology Center in Gambrills, are innovators in their profession, bringing to their patients breakthrough technologies and treatments.
College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and is also a Fellow of the College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. There is another dimension to Dr. Radon. She is a certified personal trainer and nutritionist and enjoys running, standup paddle boarding, traveling, and sailing.
A recent example is the introduction of the Mona Lisa Touch vaginal laser to their Annapolis-area office. The laser, new to the United States, is a non-hormonal in-office treatment for vaginal atrophy, dryness, and painful intercourse. It is believed to be a “game changer” for postmenopausal women who no longer must accept the loss of intimacy as an inevitable part of their lives.
Dr. Peeler was born in Boulder, Colorado, moved to Annapolis in 2000 with her husband Dr. Mark Peeler, a native Annapolitan, and joined a local OB/GYN practice. In 2007 she decided to sub-specialize in gynecology, offering personalized and innovative gynecologic care. Like Dr. Radon, Dr. Peeler is multifaceted and supportive of connections between mind, body, and spirit. She spends her free time with family attending sporting events, supporting Navy athletics, and hosting Navy Midshipmen.
Both doctors are unique in their powerful drive to advance women’s health care and in their passion for gynecology. Dr. Radon, in practice since 1999, was born and raised in Whitehall, Pennsylvania. She received her medical degree at The Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of North Carolina. Publishers' Letter Greetings friends, I know it is autumn— my dad is gathering chestnuts from the trees on Ferry Point, my old home. They bend over kindly, like grandfathers guarding my childhood. Miniature whirlwinds spin in leaves, pretending to be tempests. Now is a productive time. A poetry professor I had wrote only between the fall and spring solstices. She would light a fire in her Cambridge brownstone, and, with nothing but broccoli in her refrigerator and three cats draped about like throw rugs, write poems later appearing in her book The Master Letters and The New Yorker and places like that.

What do George Lucas, Rosey Grier, and your greatgrandmother have in common? Knitting. But, this should not be a surprise. Knitting “probably started with men making fishing nets and was spread by Arabian sailors and merchants who traveled throughout the Mediterranean,” says the Craft Yarn Council of America, a trade organization that does research on knitting trends. The mastery of knots for their livelihood eventually transferred to wearing apparel and decorative items and became a skill accomplished by men. Fast forward to the Industrial Revolution, says Kristin Spurkland, author of The Knitting Man(ual) (Ten Speed Press, 2007), when production was mechanized, and it was taken over by women. Then, in the 1930s, it caught on with men again. Those of us who are of a “certain age” may remember Rosey Grier (pro football player for the New York Giants and Los Angeles Rams) doing needlepoint and macrame and writing Rosey Grier’s Needlepoint for Men in 1973. Now, the Craft Yarn Council estimates that approximately 2.6 million men knit, making them roughly 5 percent of the knitting population. Among male notables who knit are Brad Pitt, David Arquette, and Bob Mackie. Locally, Alan Kuyatt of Millersville has been taking classes at the Knitting Boutique in Glen Burnie since shortly after it opened four years ago. His wife, Debra, had been wanting to take classes, and once Dianna Hayes’s shop opened, the now fifty-seven-year-olds signed up, and they’ve been creating wearables, mostly for other people, ever since. The online Wool and the Gang is a do-it-yourself and ready-to-wear fashion brand that’s based on the “maker movement.” Everything comes as a “knit kit” to make your own items. The kit includes needles, yarn, the pattern, and more. The Gang has a special section dedicated to men’s items and projects. Ravelry.com, a hugely popular website for knitters and crocheters,
also has patterns for men (for apparel and for men to create). Lynora Williams of the Textile Museum at the George Washington University Museum, says, “People have been knitting for eons. By the 1930s and the Depression, people started knitting to help eliminate the stressful times. The rhythmic clicking of needles quiets the nerves,” she says, noting that as early as 1902 some people were saying knitting provided the same benefits as massage for arthritis. “Knitting is so much more than making something to wear,” says Lee Gant, author of Love in Every Stitch: Stories of Knitting and Healing (Viva Editions, 2015). “Eventually, the repetitive motion will bring comfort and a calm that’s hard to explain until you feel it yourself,” she says. Gant, a master knitter and nationally known knitwear designer, runs an organization teaching knitting to veterans, children in shelters, and teens at risk. She says, “Knitting teaches us that mistakes can be undone. It allows us time to mend our minds while offering us comfort.” This philosophy works with crocheting, needlepoint, quilting, and other yarn crafts. Young and old, men and women all benefit from the stress reduction that comes from the repetitive actions and the focus required to follow instructions, says the Craft Yarn Council. According to the American Institute of Stress, participation in these crafts has increased more than 150 percent in the twenty-five- to thirty-four-yearold age group in the past few years. The attraction is attributed to their stress reduction rewards. “As one college student said, ‘being able to sit down and just concentrate on one thing such as knitting forces you to slow down and breathe. No worries about scheduling, analyzing, charting, or anything else that the ordinary person stresses about everyday. Even if it is only for half an hour, it’s a great way to forget everything else for a brief moment and relieve the stress of everyday life.’”

It’s also proving valuable for children who are having problems with fine motor skills, the ones they need for writing. After a few sessions with hook or needle and yarn, their writing problems seem to disappear. One reason seems to be that the crafts use both sides of the brain, so it helps with coordination of both hands. Hayes says, “Comfort crafts tend to be even more successful during difficult times. When you’re making something for yourself or someone else, it offers you comfort.” Beyond sitting in a comfortable chair at home, there’s pleasure in crafting with a group, people who can help you when you have a problem and admire your work. Her shop is set up so cameras show the instructor’s hands, with lighting that assures you that you’re seeing a true color and the stitches, something that’s not always available elsewhere.
Restore YOUR RADIANCE
The trend is not just in central Maryland. Nick Corrente is an Eagle Scout from New Jersey who does needlepoint, finger weaving, and crocheting. “I believe there is a connection between yarn work and a more tranquil existence,” notes Corrente. “I get anxious when I’m not doing something with my hands, and so working with yarn really helps me to relax. I also . . . take great pleasure in being able to make things I need, such as hats, gloves, blankets, etc.” Jacob DeLaRosa is a practicing cardiac surgeon and chief of cardiac and endovascular surgery at Idaho State University, Portneuf Medical Center. His quilting began when he was a resident in general surgery and the mother of the girl he was dating pointed out a Civil War quilt in Santa Fe, New Mexico. “I told her that of course I could do one and she challenged me. After that, I started making quilts and haven’t stopped since.” Fortunately, or unfortunately, he did not marry the girl, although he did give her mother the first quilt he made and that impressed her. Often, the craft project is for someone in a hospital, hospice, or even in the military. As much as these blankets, hats, or other items might comfort the recipient, Carmen Jalkh, owner of the Yarn Basket in Annapolis, says that the phrase “comfort craft” refers to the action of creating the items: the action is comforting and the doing is the comforting part. For centuries, the therapeutic scent of lavender has been used to produce calming, soothing, and sedative effects to those suffering from high anxiety, nervousness, insomnia, restlessness, depression, or trauma. The name lavender is derived from the Latin root lavare, which means, “to wash.” The herb’s therapeutic offerings were first scientifically recorded when French scientist René-Maurice Gattefossé (1881–1950) used it by accident to help heal his hand from a laboratory burn. Gattefossé is considered the father of aromatherapy and is even credited with coming up with the word “aromatherapy.”
Found in the terrains of the Mediterranean as well as southern Europe, Australia, and parts of the United States, lavender is a small evergreen shrub that is closely related to the mint family, with narrow leaves and bluish-purple flowers. The oil in lavender’s small, blue violet flowers gives the herb its fragrant aroma. The flower buds grow in spirals
of six to ten blossoms, forming interrupted spikes above the foliage. Lavender oil can be found in a wide variety of health, beauty, skincare, and bath items, including aromatherapy oil, soaps, lotions, infusions, extracts, and teas. Many spas, acupuncture centers, and chiropractic offices infuse lavender into their treatments for added therapeutic benefit. For treatment of headaches, nervousness, or exhaustion, the use of lavender is recommended through inhalation therapy. This is done by combining 2–4 drops of lavender oil in 2–3 cups of boiling water and inhaling the vapors. To ease joint and muscle pain, add 5–10 drops of lavender oil to your next hot bath. LG

Save Your LOVE LIFE A NEW L ASER TREATMENT HEAL S PAI NFU L I NTERCO U R SE
By Drs. Paula Radon & Susan Peeler Approximately one in three postmenopausal women in the United States report discomfort during sex. If you happen to be one of them, or have a friend in need, help is here with a new recently approved FDA procedure that uses fractional CO2 laser therapy. The noninvasive procedure treats vaginal atrophy, which is a change of the vagina that develops when there is a decrease in levels of the female hormone estrogen. This causes thinning, drying, itching, burning, shortening of the vagina, and pain with intercourse. These symptoms occur naturally with menopause, which is a time when the ovaries no longer produce estrogen. 18 LOOKINGGOODMAGAZINE.COM
BREAKTHROUGH
MEDICINE
"IT" can be vagina dryness, itching or burning. Mona Lisa Touch laser treatment helps restore vagina health due to new collagen, elastin, and vasculaizaion. A decline in estrogen may raise the pH of the vagina, which allows bacteria, yeast, and other organisms to thrive. Women can suffer urinary frequency, urgency, burning during urination, urinary tract infections (UTIs), and incontinence. The most common therapy to manage these issues is the hormone estrogen. Several vaginal preparations exist with creams and a suppository used two to three times a week or a vaginal ring that is changed every 90 days. Women get effective relief with topical estrogens, but many find it difficult to remember to use regularly or feel the options can be messy and irritating. Many women are fearful of using estrogen or have a contraindication to estrogen such as breast cancer, history of blood clots, strokes, or heart disease. The emerging therapy to treat vaginal and vulvar symptoms uses the Mona Lisa Touch, an innovative laser that delivers fractional CO2 energy to the vaginal wall tissue. The small laser stimulates collagen production, elastin, and increases vascularization of the vagina. This type of laser is not new to medical specialties. It has been used by plastic surgeons and dermatologists to help treat fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots on the face. It functions in much the same way in the vagina by promoting cells to produce collagen and elastin and
revitalizes the tissue to increase moisture and suppleness. The Mona Lisa Touch had its inception in Italy and more than 15,000 women worldwide have been treated. However, until recently, it has not been offered in the United States. Dr. Mickey Karram at the University of Cincinnati and Dr. Eric Sokol at Stanford University are one of the first to bring the Mona Lisa Touch to the United States. Their preliminary data show significant improvement in all symptoms and have documented the laser efficacy and safety. In September 2014, the FDA cleared for use the CO2 laser system in medical specialties that include gynecology and genitourinary surgery. With the Mona Lisa Touch, women now have access to a safe, painless medical technology that can alleviate their symptoms. Treatments take only minutes, are performed in the doctor’s office, and can range from $600–$750 per session. As of this writing, insurance does not cover the procedure. Don’t be the ⅓ of women with pain with intercourse that never seek help. You do not need to accept gynecologic changes as an inevitable part of your life. The Mona Lisa Touch is a game changer for women who wish to take control of their sexual health. We encourage women to talk about these concerns with their doctor and see if the procedure is right for them. LG

Medi-Spas The Best of Both Worlds
By Hayley Bowerman
Now, with the increasing popularity of medi-spas, spa-goers no longer need to schedule a separate appointment for any cosmetic procedure requiring the attention of a physician. Just a few years ago, many people had not yet heard of the term “medi-spa.” Today, however, the medical center–day spa hybrid has exploded with popularity due to the convenience, comfort, and professional care it offers to patients who are seeking both traditional wellness treatments and minimally invasive medical treatments. A recent report released by the International Medical Spa Association states that there are more than 4,500 medi-spas currently operating in the United States, up from around 800 in 2007. At first glance, medi-spas may seem no different at all from traditional day spas. Just like a traditional spa, medi-spas typically offer a wide menu of beauty services and maintain a relaxing, therapeutic atmosphere. What makes a medi-spa unique is the fact that it operates under the full-time direction of a specialized medical doctor, and the service menu also includes a full range of noninvasive treatments such as Botox, glycolic peels, wrinkle correction, body sculpting, hair removal, microdermabrasion, natural dermal fillers, permanent makeup, eyelash growth enhancement, and others. Just like at a day spa, anyone is able to make an appointment, and prices are typically similar to what you’d pay at a regular salon. While medi-spas have only recently experienced a surge in popularity, there has always been an interrelationship between spas and medicine. The word “spa” is derived from
October/November 2015
21
the Latin phrase salus per aqua, which means “health (healing) through water.” In ancient Rome and Greece, spas were a place where all of the latest and greatest medical advancements and healing therapies were practiced, and there was an understanding among patients and doctors that creating an environment for healing allowed the body to effectively mend itself. Ancient Egypt, also known for its elaborate spas, used the healing powers of the Nile River, while Middle Eastern countries relied on the waters of the Dead Sea for therapeutic and medical treatments. Spas did not make their way to the United States until the mid-1800s, when private facilities began opening in New York’s Saratoga Springs area. Prominent figures such as Edgar Allan Poe and Franklin D. Roosevelt were known to frequent local spas as an alternative to the traditional medical treatments they had been receiving. In 1940, Rancho La Puerto in San Diego opened as the country’s first modern spa resort, and by the 1990s, spas had become a staple amenity in many five-star resorts and hotels. Today, spas are evolving to include more comprehensive medical treatments. While the range of services varies at each medi-spa, many cutting-edge facilities feature more advanced procedures such as i-Lipo and CoolSculpting, which result in slimmer, tighter, smoother looking skin due to targeted fat reduction, and laser skin rejuvenation, which reduces wrinkling, age spots, visible veins, and skin sagging. Other popular medi-spa treatments that have become staple services include photo rejuvenation (wrinkle reduction injections such as Botox), eyelash extensions, laser hair removal, microdermabrasion, spider and varicose vein removal, and chemical peels, all of which are completed by a licensed physician. Why undergo such procedures at a medi-spa rather than a cosmetic surgery center? For many, the reason simply comes down to the fact that a medi-spa can offer the best of both worlds. Patrons can receive the same professional procedures that surgery centers offer but in a holistic spa atmosphere. Typically a wider variety of cosmetic and wellness treatments are available at medi-spas, with the advantage of combining services and procedures. Additionally, most medi-spas offer a more customized approach, providing consultations for personalized packages that help clients achieve their needs, both medically and holistically. LG

WEDDING DREAMS REALIZED
When considering a medi-spa for your next treatment or procedure, conduct your research before scheduling an appointment. Questions to ask to ensure you are selecting a safe, caring, and comfortable facility include: • Is the facility licensed by a board certified physician? • Does a board certified physician operate the facility? • Is the physician on the premise at all times? • How long has the medi-spa been in operation? • Are all other staff therapists, estheticians, and specialists properly licensed?
• What makes the treatment I’m seeking suitable for my needs? • Are there any reasons I should not have this treatment?
At The Westin Annapolis, your wedding is about you...it’s just that simple. Dr. Claire Duggal is a plastic surgeon specializing in all cosmetic and reconstructive surgery for the face and body. She began her education at Harvard University and then moved south to Emory University in Atlanta where she obtained her medical degree and completed her Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery training program. Dr. Duggal prides herself on taking a natural approach to restoring and enhancing each patient individually.
DR. CLAIRE DUGGAL, MD
Duggal Plastic Surgery specializes in advanced skin care and non-surgical facial rejuvenation including botox and fillers, as well as facial, breast, and body contouring surgery. As a mother herself, Dr. Duggal relates to what women face after having children and the desire to regain a “pre-baby” body. She is experienced in abdominoplasty, breast augmentation, liposuction, and fat grafting. Dr. Duggal utilizes a 3D imaging system called Vectra that allows patients to see a very accurate reflection of their postoperative results before surgery. This is especially useful for breast augmentation, where patients can “try on” different sized implants before ever undergoing surgery. Everyone at Duggal Plastic Surgery is committed to creating safe, natural, and beautiful results with exceptional patient care.

Hannah Weiland, a recent graduate of the London College of Fashion, has shot onto the fashion scene with Shrimps fashion label. Launched in 2013, these faux-fur outerwear creations are “inspired by the witticisms of modern art” and “a playful engagement with pattern and texture.” Drawing on her background in History of Art and a diploma in Surface Textile Design, these works from her Londonbased studio are injected with the hues of pop art and pose a bright challenge to conventional color codes. During Paris Fashion Week earlier this month, one model was spotted after hours wearing a Shrimps trench coat, making international fashion news with her choice of “street wear.” October/November 2015

Avoid
Holiday Weight Gain By Betty Lynn Godwin
36 LOOKINGGOODMAGAZINE.COM
Holiday weight gain seems inevitable, but it doesn’t have to be. Gaining a couple of pounds is not a big deal, but let’s face reality, no one wants to pack on the pounds. Following are four simple ways to avoid holiday weight gain this year. So, read on and, when the holiday invitations start rolling in, stay calm and carry on. DON’T GO ANYWHERE WHEN HUNGRY. Never go to a party on an empty stomach. If you head out hungry, you will end up being tempted by all of the holiday goodies. You might not eat before going to a party so that you can indulge in the delicious food offered, but those foods are most likely fat and calorie laden. Always eat a small, healthy meal before you head out of the house. By doing this you will be less tempted to overindulge in holiday treats. MAKE WATER YOUR MAIN BEVERAGE. Water is your most important beverage during the holiday season. Water will keep you full, hydrated, and full of energy. Tea is also a good healthy beverage, but avoid too many novelty coffee drinks and alcoholic beverages because the calories can add up very quickly. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t enjoy holiday drinks. Limiting how much you drink is important for maintaining your weight. Before you drink anything else, drink a few glasses of water. FIND DISTRACTIONS. Holiday parties always have lots of beautifully displayed food. It’s easy to get drawn in and continue going back for more. After you’ve had a plate of food, find something else to do. Introduce yourself to someone you don’t know and engage them in conversation. Need a conversation starter? Why not ask how they handle holiday temptations? HIT THE GYM OR WALK AROUND YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD.
“Water is your most important beverage during the holidays.”
The holiday season is busy, but skipping the gym too often is not a good idea. You might not be able to go five days a week as you normally do, but going a couple of times a week will help you keep your weight under control and keep you in the habit of going. If trudging to the gym is too much of a hassle during the holidays, go for a walk or run around the neighborhood. You can run or walk for just 20 minutes and return feeling refreshed. Walking in the snow can be quite the workout. You can avoid holiday weight gain by being smart about food intake and fitness. You don’t have to set strict rules for yourself and avoid all the fun stuff. It’s all about moderation and remaining active. LG

MODERN MEDICINE O l d - Fa s h i o n e d Va l u e s M E E T D R . K E L LY S U L L I VA N, M D , FA C S By Sarah Hagerty Nothing is more “twenty-first century” than the ability to improve one’s appearance through science and technology. Both surgical and noninvasive procedures can have a profound, positive effect on how we look and feel. A twenty-first-century dilemma, however, is finding a caring, talented physician. Many doctors, of all specialties, have perfected the time-efficient visit: patients wait in three or four exam rooms simultaneously and spend more time with assistants than physicians. Ophthalmologists may be the only doctors who take the time to look patients in the eye anymore. The very notable exception to this trend is a visit to Sullivan Integrated Aesthetic Center.
40 LOOKINGGOODMAGAZINE.COM
First, you are welcomed into a comfortable consultation room with leather chairs that feel more private club than medicinal. There is no awkward waiting on an exam table with paper crinkling under your thighs. There is no “all-business” atmosphere where the doctor sits behind a large, intimidating desk. Here, you are greeted faceto-face by Dr. Kelly Sullivan, a woman of considerable personal warmth and impressive achievements. This getting-to-know-you time is especially significant when she hands you a mirror and asks, “What’s bothering you? What would you like to change?” This simple exchange opens the door to a full, unhurried discussion while Dr. Sullivan and her staff really listen. Listening is one of her talents Those talents were evident from an early age. The Northern Virginia native was an accomplished dancer and spent summers dancing with the San Francisco Ballet and the Joffrey Ballet. She attended M.I.T. for her undergraduate studies in mechanical engineering (while still finding time to teach a ballet class for athletes!) and completed her medical school training at Harvard Medical School. She performed her residencies in general surgery and plastic surgery at Emory University Hospital. It was there where she met her husband, Dr. Justin Cashman, an orthopedic surgeon and founder of Performance Orthopedics. They chose Annapolis for their future home. Dr. Sullivan’s practice provides all the medical and cosmetic support patients may be seeking. The world of injectables (Botox, dermal fillers, Restylane, and others) is well covered—and all injections are performed by Dr. Sullivan herself. For skin care, the world-class medical spa offers a membership program that features a customized, everysix-week treatment to maximize results. There is even a weight-loss program available, which complements many of the body contouring procedures that Dr. Sullivan offers at this truly integrated practice. Dr. Sullivan and her family are very much a part of our community. Dr. Sullivan, in 2006, founded Wellness House of Annapolis, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide free support in a “clubhouse”–like atmosphere for individuals and their families affected by cancer. It is difficult to overstate her practice’s polished and caring atmosphere. Simply stepping inside makes you feel better. Spend time with the supportive Dr. Sullivan and see for yourself. She is a refreshingly decent human being. It is clear that this is a very special place to begin any personal transformation.

& Loving It Topless in St. Michaels
By Ann Tochterman Seta
My husband and I have been boaters for at least fifty years. We joined the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo and, until a couple of years ago, owned a dock there. One summer a large group of our Key Largo friends visited us in Annapolis for a week. On a beautiful afternoon we got on our powerboat and made the trip to St. Michaels to have lunch at the Crab Claw. We had reserved a large long table on the upper deck to introduce our friends to one of the great treats Maryland is famed for. I got up to wash my hands in the ladies room. Inside, it was crowded, and everyone was chatting. Then, there was complete silence—a girl in her thirties came in wearing an opened sleeveless jean top with her tattooed boobs proudly standing out. I was intrigued to say the least. Not being one bit shy myself, I started talking to her. The other ladies didn’t open their mouths except in disbelief. The girl was very nice and said she often wore the outfit because she was part of the “go fast boats” that race on the Eastern Shore on weekends. (That’s another story in itself to watch those boat races and the outfits both the girls and guys wear to proudly show off their bodies.)
I liked the girl and asked her if she would go out to my table where she would find about twenty friends and my husband sitting at the far end. I wanted her to walk up to my husband as if she knew him very, very well and ask how he’s been doing since she last saw him. She was all for it. So I went ahead of her and sat at my seat, like nothing was happening. Then, she walked over, put her arms around him, kind of whispering and giggling in his ear. My husband didn’t have a clue what was happening but went along with it, and all of our friends were laughing like crazy because he’s just not the type to be hanging out with this girl. He was a great sport and our friends absolutely loved it. Everyone had their picture taken with her (at least the guys did). I have a picture of her (photoshopped with my face on her body and that’s the truth). It is important to reach out, at any age, and make room in your life for a new friend, a new experience, even if you and everybody else are out of your comfort zone. Who cares what someone may or may not be wearing? Or what crowd they run with? I do not. But I do have a very special memory to smile about and cherish. LG Ann Seta's face appears on the body of a topless woman Ann met in St. Michaels, MD.

THE 9 GREATEST BENEFITS OF
WEIGHTLIFTING
BY CARLTON RYAN
A regular regimen of weight training will confer many benefits to practitioners. Those who already lift weights can be proud of their good habit, while those who don’t should consider taking it up. Here are the nine most important benefits of weightlifting.
1. Increased strength. Obviously, lifting weights will improve
strength—weightlifting is by far the best way to become stronger. While some people simply enjoy being strong, strength is also an important aspect of overall health. Many simple, everyday body movements are made easier with stronger muscles, and being strong can protect the body from injuries.
2. Attractiveness. Large, strong muscles are considered attractive, especially among men. Even if a person has no desire for huge muscles, weight lifting will help define and sculpt the physique. The more fit a person is, the better that person looks. 3. It promotes happiness. Exercise of all forms triggers the release of endorphins, the brain chemical associated with pleasure and happiness. Engaging in challenging activities like weight training promotes satisfaction, confidence, and self-esteem. As a person increases their weightlifting abilities, they will feel more pride in themselves. 4. Better mental health. It turns out the old idea that a sound body
leads to a sound mind has some truth to it. Research has associated strength training with stress relief, and some studies have even found pumping iron boosts cognitive function. Physical exertion is a great way to discharge negative emotions such as anger and anxiety.
5. Calorie burning. While aerobic exercise uses up calories at a faster rate than weight training, pumping iron will still burn calories, which is of course a key part of weight loss. In addition, adding muscle
speeds up the body’s metabolism, further increasing calorie use. Even when resting, muscle cells burn up calories at a relatively high rate. For those who want to lose weight, weight training at the same time is a good way to help ensure that fat, rather than muscle, is lost.
6. The slowing of some effects of aging. As the human body ages, muscle mass is lost, coordination and balance decline, and bone density decreases. Lifting weights can counteract all of these negative phenomena. Even if a person doesn’t try to add muscle, lifting weights will help retain the muscle already present. Similarly, bone density and good balance are heavily dependent on muscle strength, so lifting weights can help prevent fractures, falls, and osteoporosis. 7. A healthier heart and circulatory system. Scientists have found that lifting weights (while also participating in cardiovascular exercises) can lower overall blood pressure. Similarly, bad cholesterol levels can be reined in by a regular regimen of weight training. 8. Pain prevention. Many kinds of chronic pain can be at least partially relieved by strength training exercises, since weak, strained muscles are themselves frequently a cause of pain. For example, lower back pain is often a result of an undeveloped core that is incapable of properly supporting the spine. 9. A longer life. The better a person’s health, the longer they are likely to live, so valuable exercises like weightlifting can result in a greater lifespan. Numerous studies have found a connection between strength and longevity. LG
Lifting weights is valuable in a variety of ways, and anyone can benefit from engaging in the exercise. Those who are interested in healthy living should consider taking up weightlifting. October/November 2015
