THE SILENT LANGUAGE OF TWINS

By Kymberly Taylor | Photography by Jenna and Jade McDonnell

Identical twins Jenna and Jade McDonnell are featured in a photo essay in the preceding pages of this issue of Looking Good. They agree that they have twintuition, loosely defined as “the extrasensory perception and communication shared only between twins.” Researchers report that some twins may devise special signs and sounds for each other, usually at the age of two or three years old. One occurrence made national news. In February 2011, a YouTube video of jabbering twins went viral, and even made it into the New York Times’ Well blog. In extreme cases, twins may create an even more complex language. Scientists call this cryptophasia, a phenomenom of language developed and understood only by the twins themselves. This is the case of Matthew and Michael Youlden. The brothers invented a language with its own alphabet and even irregular verbs reports Babbel Magazine. This language is still secret and used by them today. Jade and Jenna are exceptionally close. While many twins finish each other’s sentences and claim they sense the other’s feelings even from afar, most part ways at adulthood. However, this is not so with the sisters who have modeled professionally since a very young age and continue to do so today. They admit they are their own best friends, have few close friends, and even fewer boyfriends. What they share is an obsessive drive to create art with and about each other. They have something to express to the world, they said. They will sacrifice normal activities to achieve their goals, which the following recent text from Jade to Jenna reveals:

18 L O O K I N G G O O D M A G A Z I N E . C O M

Photography is one of their mediums of expression. Their “private” language takes place through the camera’s lens. The conversation began when the girls were eight years old. At first, Jenna photographed Jade with any camera her small hands could hold. Jade did the same. Now, the sisters take thousands of photographs of each other with a professional Nikon. They say they “know” each other and want to show the world their uniqueness. What transpires is a private language composed of expressions and gazes, visual phrases undecipherable to the viewer. However, what we see and perhaps what they want us to see is something surely beautiful and unusual: a portrait of a shared self. The following photographs are not professional or edited, and used with the permission of Jade and Jenna McDonnell. LG

Whatever the occasion makeup can enhance your features and help you feel ready to tackle anything. Taking a look from day to night doesn’t have to require a lot of makeup work, just a few smart moves. Renee Kaplan of David Alexander Salon and Spa in Annapolis believes that when it comes to day-to-evening looks contour is key. “Contour should be done with blush, more so than contouring with 24 L O O K I N G G O O D M A G A Z I N E . a cream or powder.” People can overdo it, Kaplan explains, and look artificial instead of fresh and glamorous. For day, Kaplan is all about being natural with an edge. Women should look “fun and fresh,” she says. Some of the products she uses to create day looks are: NYX Cosmetics Glam Lip Gloss VIP, Urban Decay Flatline and West eyeshadows, and NARS Sin blush.

Her picks for a nighttime edge include: Dior Addict Délice brown lipstick, Urban Decay Backlash white eyeshadow, Urban Decay eye pencil in Sabbath, and NARS Lovejoy blush. David Alexander Salon and Spa, dasalonandspa.com

Amy Wild, owner of Vintage Veils in Severna Park says to relax when putting on makeup. People shouldn’t be afraid to experiment. “Who’s to say what is wrong or right?” she says. She does believe, though, that less is always better than more. “Start out natural. It’s easier to add rather than subtract,” she advises. Her additions for a nighttime look include splashes of color for eyes and lips. “Lipstick gives you the look that you did more than you did,” says Wild. In the year 2016

many say sixty is the new forty. In a world where people live and work longer than ever, the desire to look as good as one feels is ever increasing. Persons in the work force are seeking ways to look refreshed to remain competitive. With a divorce rate exceeding 50 percent the search for a partner among middle-aged Americans has never been greater. Genetics and a healthy lifestyle are major factors that contribute to a youthful appearance. No matter what, if you wish to make a change, many more rejuvenating therapies are available today because of advanced technologies. While major plastic surgery procedures have grown into a thirteen billion dollar annual industry, it is the in-office no-downtime cosmetic procedures that have astronomically increased this past decade. Here are some of the most popular procedures:

LIQUID FACE LIFT & INJECTABLE FACIAL FILLERS In our proprietary liquid facelifts techniques, fillers are used in careful combinations to rejuvenate the face by uplifting fallen cheek and jowl areas. Lip fillers can provide a full lip look and eliminate perioral (vertical) lip lines. The array of injectable filler choices is dependent upon the area injected and the length of duration of the product. Several hyaluronic acid fillers composed of an injectable enzyme solution are available that will last six months to a year. These fillers are Juvederm Ultra, Juvederm Ultra Plus, Restylane, Silk, and Belotero. Fillers with a longer duration lasting from a year to eighteen months include a calcium hydroxyapatite product, Radiesse and a long-term hyaluronidase product, Voluma. Permanent fillers such as Bellafill, a PMMA collagen filler, are very effective in patients who seek to avoid the fluctuation that occurs with other fillers.

NEUROTOXINS (BOTOX/XEOMIN) As part of our liquid face lift, our advanced injection techniques with neurotoxins block the action of specific facial muscles which allows for brow elevation, elimination of forehead, glabellar inter eye, and crows feet creases. It helps rid perioral or vertical lines and creates a fuller red lip.

LASER FACIAL REJUVENATION The PicoSure Focus laser is the most technologically advanced laser in today’s aesthetic market. It uses a powerful 755-wavelength laser in shockwaves lasting just billionths of a second. The short impact of energy stimulates collagen, improves the texture of the skin, and breaks down brown spots without recovery or downtime. It takes less than 15 minutes and requires no numbing medicine or anesthesia. It is performed in a series of three treatments several weeks apart.

LASER BODY FAT CONTOURING The latest innovation in the body contouring market is SculpSure. At this time, it is the absolute best, noninvasive and most comfortable treatment for fat removal. The 1060 NM laser delivers treatment to problem areas for 25 minutes. Common one-time effects are a 25 percent fat reduction at the treated sites. Depending on individual desires, an additional treatment may be requested. Treatment areas include the lower abdomen, the upper abdomen, the lateral and posterior flanks, upper lateral back, legs, and arms. Unlike other systems such as Coolsculpt, which freezes fat, killing fat cells that are then processed and disposed of by the body, SculpSure leaves no ridges in the treatment areas. And, there is no numbness or residual nerve damage. It is faster, much less painful, and more effective than any other noninvasive lipocontouring procedure.

VIORA REACTION FOR SKIN TIGHTENING OF THE FACE AND BODY This highly popular radiofrequency technology is used to tighten the skin of the jowls, chin, neck, arms, abdomen, flanks, and legs. Each 30 minute treatment leaves the skin feeling warm and tighter yet any redness is gone within the hour. The bipolar technology localizes the effects of the radiofrequency current to minimize any discomfort. No numbing creams or injections are necessary. The contouring protocols also heat the underling fat and dermis to shrink fat and cellulite while having the side benefit of tightening the overlying skin. Usually a series of six to eight treatments over the ensuing months is recommended.

PRISTINE MICRODERMABRASION AND FIRE AND ICE FACIAL PEEL This treatment provides the best of both worlds. Crystal-free microdermabrasion allows for a super painless exfoliation, free of messy and even risky aluminum crystals. Combined with an alpha hydroxyl fruits acid peel and the Innovative Skincare hydrating treatment, it will leave the skin primed to absorb our special collagen building serums. Severn River ENT Plastic and Laser Surgery is the area’s premier cosmetic laser center with state of the art technologies and expertise. The offices are located in Annapolis at 621 Ridgely Ave, Suite 401 and in Severna Park at 479 Jumpers Hole Road, Suite 304. Medical Director Lee Kleiman, MD, FACS, is a board certified facial plastic surgeon who has been performing cosmetic facial plastic surgery and laser procedures over the past twenty-five years. The therapies offered at the practice will rejuvenate and restore a patient’s best features with minimal or no downtime. Be it the face or body, there are many ways to enhance one’s shape and skin texture. | kleimanmd.com

FATHERHOOD & FITNESS

TIME CRUNCHED By Dale Barr

4 a.m. Wednesday morning. The alarm goes off. My first client is at 5 a.m., and I’ll be training clients straight through until 11:30 a.m. Then it’s home to relieve the nanny at 12:30 p.m., and I’ll spend the rest of the day with my two boys, both of whom are under age two. If I’m going to get my own workout in it has to happen in that 11:30–12:30 window.

FITNESS

On this day, however, like many of us with kids, I’m pulled off my schedule to take one of our boys to the pediatrician. Everything gets bumped back an hour or two or skipped altogether, including naptime for the boys, household chores, and, of course, a workout. Sick kid aside, it is disappointing to miss a workout. I look forward to my one hour of gym time to destress and have some alone time. However, I’ve learned not to dwell on one missed day or let it snowball. I look at it as only one day.

Let’s talk about some ideas to counter the time crunch and get you back on the road to better health: Start early. What time does your day start? Can you get into a gym or workout at home early? This is the best bet. Get your exercise in before your “day” happens. If your workout is going to happen at the end of your day, after work, after kids sports/activities, life inevitably happens and you will put it off. If you need to be in the shower by 7 a.m., get up an hour earlier and get 30–60 minutes in before anything has the chance to derail you. Join a gym near your home or work. Convenience here is the key. You are not likely to drive out of your way on a consistent basis to workout with all of life’s other commitments pulling at you.

My next day’s schedule is different but no less hectic. I have our nanny come an hour early on Tuesdays and Thursdays so I can be sure to get a workout in before my afternoon clients start. I’ve built this in as part of my day so when things like the last minute pediatrician visit pop up I should still get in two to three workouts every week.

Incorporate your workouts into other activities. If you have young kids, get a good stroller and take walks daily. Pushing our stroller with both boys can be a great workout especially now that they collectively weigh over 50 lbs! Our playground is a little over a mile away, so walking there and back is a great way to spend time together and get some exercise in too.

As you can see from my daily itinerary, workouts need to be scheduled. One of the most common reasons I hear from people as to why they can’t or don’t exercise is “I don’t have the time.” I’m here to tell you, yes, yes you do. I know firsthand that it’s not easy to find time for “personal” things. The answer? Make an appointment for your workout. If you just roll through your day and hope to get a workout in when time allows then it’s not going to happen very often.

Buy workout equipment for your home. For those times when getting to a gym isn’t going to happen have at hand free weights, dumbbells or barbells, kettlebells, a jump rope, bands, or a TRX in-home system. All of these allow for multiple exercises that challenge and change you and can fit in a small corner in the basement or garage.

As a father who also runs a personal training business, I have to schedule most everything. Spending time with my boys every day is extremely important to me, so I have structured my personal training business, even if it means declining new business, so that I can be present in my children’s lives. I’ve been fortunate to see first steps, hear first words, and be at the park to watch my son climb a ladder by himself. I’m a better parent and better role model if I’m at my best. In juggling parenting, marriage, my business, and my own workouts, I get the thought process of “I don’t have time.” When I hear someone say that it makes me think that person doesn’t value himself or herself. As parents we give and give and give. It’s easy to forget and not care for ourselves. Don’t allow that to happen. 30 L O O K I N G G O O D M A G A Z I N E . C O M

Hire a trainer. While I might be a little biased on this one, you do need someone to keep you accountable. You are far less likely to miss a session if there is a financial commitment and you know someone else is expecting you. If you miss, you’ll get calls, texts, or emails asking you where you are and what’s going on. A good trainer will also make sure you’re getting the most out of the time you do invest and keep you on track toward any specific goals you want to attain. Remember getting some exercise in is almost always better than nothing. You don’t have to have 60–90 minutes every time you go to the gym. Only have 30 minutes, great, a lot can be done in that time and you’ll feel better physically and mentally after a workout versus chalking up another missed day. LG

THE EGG DEBATE

The Egg and Heart Health

By Lisa A. Lewis When choosing nutritious foods, eggs are a veritable gold mine. They are loaded with hard-toobtain vitamins and minerals and rich in protein. But for decades, eggs were deemed unhealthy. In fact, they developed such a bad reputation that some people chose not to eat them. The medical community was concerned about their high cholesterol content, which was linked directly to heart and artery disease. But the much maligned egg has finally been vindicated—scientists recently uncovered evidence that proved that the bad reputation eggs have received for so many years was undeserved. Eggs are high in dietary cholesterol, which is the right kind of cholesterol. While “cholesterol levels in the bloodstream cause a higher risk of heart disease, notes Michael Blaha, MD, MPH, director of clinical research at the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease, the dietary cholesterol “doesn’t directly turn into blood cholesterol.” “In fact, nearly 90 percent of all blood cholesterol is made in the liver—not from dietary cholesterol,” says Blaha. “So the dietary cholesterol in eggs doesn’t have much effect on blood cholesterol levels.”

THE SCIENCE OF CHOLESTEROL

Since the real focus of the debate is on cholesterol, it’s important to understand its role in the body. There are two types of cholesterol: dietary cholesterol, as mentioned, which comes from food, and blood cholesterol, which is produced in the liver and found in the bloodstream. Only foods of animal origin, such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy products, contain dietary cholesterol. According to the American Egg Board, one large egg has about 185 milligrams of cholesterol—all of which is in the yolk. This seems high, especially since the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans limited consumption of dietary cholesterol to 300 milligrams per day. Although dietary cholesterol can contribute to high blood cholesterol levels, the increase is minimal compared to the effect of the main offenders: saturated fats and trans fats. A p r i l / M a y 2 0 16

35

GUIDELINES FOR HIGH RISK GROUPS A daily limit of dietary cholesterol isn’t included in the 2015–2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. In fact, it notes that most healthy people can eat up to seven eggs per week—exciting news for egg lovers. However, the medical community disagrees about how many eggs people in higher risk groups should eat. Some physicians recommend that patients with diabetes, heart disease, or high blood cholesterol levels limit their intake of eggs. “The opinions are mixed in the scientific community, but my recommendation [to limit egg consumption] is based on the Physicians’ Health Study from 2008,” says Bryan H. Curry, MD, interim chief of cardiology at Howard University Hospital. “The conclusion was that two scrambled eggs with salsa and a whole-wheat English muffin is very different from eggs with cheese, sausage, home fries, and buttered toast. More specifically, the Nurses’ Health Study and Health Professional Follow-Up Study showed that the risk of heart disease was increased among diabetics who ate one or more eggs a day, and the conclusion was that they limit consumption to three per week.” Blaha says that higher risk groups need to pay more attention to their diet, but he doesn’t set a limit on eggs. Instead, he recommends overall healthy eating patterns rather than focusing on one specific food. People with risk factors should consult their doctor who can provide advice based on their individual needs.

PREPARATION OF EGGS When preparing eggs, keep added fats to a minimum. Obviously, poached and hard-boiled eggs, which are cooked in water, are healthier options than an egg fried in butter, which is high in saturated fat. “There are so many ways to incorporate eggs into your diet,” says Lisa Gonzalez, a nutrition educator at the University of Maryland Extension. “I recommend using low-fat cooking methods and pairing eggs with veggies, low-fat cheese, wholegrain breads or waffles, and salads. These are healthy choices, and they add variety to your diet. After all, if you love eggs, you should find delicious ways to prepare them and really enjoy them.” Drop the guilt and explore you culinary cravings. At least for now, there is no such thing as a bad egg. LG

LOOKING GOOD IN THE KITCHEN

BY THERESA WINSLOW PHOTOGRAPH BY DAVID HARTCORN

Cooking wasn’t always a tasty career choice for Chef Kurt Peter. He started working in restaurants at age fourteen, but knew life as a chef was tough and, preparing for a career outside of the kitchen, went to Lynchburg College for sports management and business. He played lacrosse there, as well at St. Mary’s High School in Annapolis, where he also played ice hockey. After college, he worked in stadium operations for a minor league baseball team. But he missed the camaraderie of the kitchen and eventually enrolled in the culinary arts program at Anne Arundel Community College. He became sous chef at the Westin three years ago, after making a panseared rockfish as part of the application. Since August 2015, he has served as executive chef and will unveil a new spring menu this month. He’s responsible for the hotel’s Azure Restaurant, the bar/lounge, banquets, and room service.

38 L O O K I N G G O O D M A G A Z I N E . C O M

Ultimately, Chef Peter would like a restaurant of his own, but for the foreseeable future he’s driven to prepare the best meals possible for guests. His key to looking good in the kitchen? Supportive shoes and socks, confidence, and “respecting” the food. Thin crust pepperoni pizza is his guilty takeout pleasure. LGM: Do you ever regret leaving sports and doing this? Chef Peter: No . . . this is kind of my path. It’s in my blood. LGM: What personality traits do you bring to being a chef? Chef Peter: [I’m] trustworthy. I care about the products, the employees. I’m very driven, kind of self-motivated, and very competitive. I guess that’s from playing sports at a young age.

Annapolis

Aesthetic Surgery LGM: How does competition translate to being a chef? Chef Peter: You want to be the best. You want to work hard and put great products out that people respect.

An Artist’s Eye. A Woman’s Touch

LGM: When the kitchen is running well and all sixteen people are chugging along, what would you compare it to? Is it like a sports team? Chef Peter: It’s very much like a sports team; a well-oiled machine. Seeing the guys work the line or work on banquets, they have a feel for each other, just like the players on the same sports team. LGM: Are you the manager, or the star player, or both? Chef Peter: Maybe a little combination of both; the team captain. LGM: In any one day, how many items will you have a hand in cooking? Chef Peter: It really depends on business, but I’d like to say I’m either tasting or helping prepare each thing that comes out of the kitchen. My hand is in all the recipes. Essentially, it’s my food someone else is putting out.

Marcia V. Ormsby, M.D. Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon Member of American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery Over 25 Years of Surgical Experience

LGM: What’s your favorite thing to cook? Chef Peter: I love to use local ingredients; a lot of seafood. I love to fish and hunt—a lot of game. LGM: What’s your least favorite food? Chef Peter: Growing up, I absolutely hated Brussels sprouts. I think every kid does. But I’ve learned to love them . . . I literally eat everything. I’m not a very picky eater. I used to be extremely picky when I was younger. LGM: When people leave the restaurant or a banquet, what would you like them to say about the food?

WEDDING

A Fall at the Wedding winery

“Lush, warm, and full” describes almost perfectly the wedding of Rachel Baumgarten to Nicholas Edler on October 14, 2015, at Springfield Manor Winery and Distillery in Thurmont, MD. Rachel, a graphic designer and marketing manager for Homestead Gardens, had a vision—to spotlight and celebrate fall, which happens to be the couple’s favorite season. And their wedding overflowed with its colors, comforts, and moods. She incorporated warm colors such as oranges and reds to counter the crisp air blowing down from the Catoctin Mountains and added rustic elements such as burlap, bird cages, and skeleton keys to recall the feeling of a farm and orchard. Because she wanted to feel very connected to the celebration, Rachel used her graphic arts ability to design the wedding logo and customize the invitations. Also, she designed the wedding program, hand lettered the table place cards, and screen printed all the table runners and burlap favor bags by hand. Her mom chipped in and added her own personal touch as well—making the veil and the couple’s ring pillow. To “look good” on their wedding day, Rachel said that she and Nicholas both used Weight Watchers to maintain a healthy diet more so than for weight loss. And, Rachel joined a gym. There was no specific workout routine, but she wanted to feel stronger, healthier, and less stressed during the wedding planning process. Nicholas reignited his passion for swimming as a way to shape up for the wedding and handle stress. The couple took dance lessons at Arthur Murray dance studio in Columbia so they could look and feel confident during their first dance. And, they certainly did, falling in love all over again. LG
