PUBLISHERS’ LETTER The architecture of our cover story has a feature of all great art—clarity of thought. When we first saw this home we were impressed by the precision of its design. The windows introduce asymmetrical elements that still achieve balance. Not all modern designs work, but this home, designed by Robert Gurney and built by ThinkMakeBuild, certainly does. Robert Clark, CEO of Historic Annapolis, deals with historic architecture every day. For that reason, we thought you would be intrigued by his own home. On occasion, we feature landmark architectural sites and gardens that we believe many of our readers may want to visit. Artist Robert Irwin’s garden designed for the Getty Center in Los Angeles is a place to add to the top of your travel list. All of us at Annapolis Home wish you and your family much joy during this holiday season. We will enjoy the holiday as we also work on the January issue of Annapolis Home, which will feature the winners from our Custom Building and Fine Design Awards. If your business would like to advertise in this special issue, please contact robert@annapolishomemag.com. Happy Holidays, Robert and Kymberly

Handel’s Messiah, composed in 1741, is such a grand musical event that it will always be one of the best parts of the holiday season. Children should be exposed to great classical music early on. The Messiah was a hallmark of my holiday experiences growing up and I thank my mother for that. One concert definitely worth attending is the Messiah at Naval Academy on December 3, 2016. This concert includes the USNA Glee Club, the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra and the Metropolitan Opera Company. For information, visit usna.edu/music.
The wonderful Live Arts Maryland will also present Handel’s Messiah at St. Anne’s Church on December 16, 17 and 18. See liveartsmaryland.org. If tickets are sold out or you can’t make the Annapolis concerts, try Baltimore. The Baltimore Symphony will preform Handle’s Messiah on December 2, 3 and 4. Visit bsomusic.org.
Take your family and guests this holiday season to some of the great art museums in this part of the country. Just to mention a few of the incredible museums worth visiting: in Annapolis, the Mitchell Gallery at St. John’s College; in Baltimore, the newly redesigned Baltimore Museum of Art and the Walters Art Gallery; in Washington D.C., the National Gallery of Art, the Freer Gallery, the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. There is no doubt that people who visit art museums and participate in the performing arts, not to mention read poetry and literature, are some of the most interesting, alive and thoughtful people you will meet!
Robert Haywood, Ph.D., studied art and architectural history at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He has taught at MIT and Johns Hopkins University and has been a residential fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts and the Getty Center in Los Angeles.

Thoughtful Architecture on Solitude Creek
By Kymberly Taylor | Photography by Anice Hoachlander This modern home on Solitude Creek in St. Michaels designed by architect Robert M. Gurney, FAIA, has won many prestigious awards. Yet, it is composed of very simple things: light, void, the square. These basic elements captivated Gurney early in his career, when he designed one of his first homes, a basic clapboard in Sherwood Forest in Annapolis. Two hundred and fifty local, regional and national design awards later, they still propel his work. “That house had traits similar to this one. I’ve always been fascinated with geometry, compasses, proportion and relationships, void to solid, light to dark,” he reflects. “The square is a familiar size and shape, but this does not mean it can’t be interesting.” The home rising from the quiet banks of this Eastern Shore creek is an example. Built by ThinkMakeBuild, a design build firm in Washington D.C., it is composed of pure rectangles. Its beauty lies in its clarity. Yet, its form was driven by the need to solve some messy problems. First and foremost, the preexisting Dutch Colonial–style home in its place was right in the middle of a newly designated flood plain. In

fact, the creek overflowed its banks many times, leaving the residence mold-ridden and filthy. The new owner, mindful of cost, wanted to retain the coveted creekside location, light-filled spaces, views of cove, pine forests and marsh, and wanted walls for his collection of abstract art. Strict building, zoning and environmental regulations prohibiting new building in the buffer zone were Gurney’s inspiration. He tore down the original home and elevated the foundation by 2 feet. The structure is compact because it does not expand the original footprint. A covered entry porch is cantilevered beyond the foundation but does not exceed the dimensions of the preexisting stoop. A series of small decks and ramps interact with the landscape and are constructed to break apart in the event of a major storm or flooding. The home is designed so the owners may age in place. There are many facets to this home. It takes the concept of the “open floor plan” to a new level. Here, a flowing geometry resists psychological lethargy. Windows are the façade’s only ornamentation. This is all intentional. Gurney is a proponent of what he calls “thoughtful architecture,” projects such as this one that are “thoughtfully ordered, meticulously detailed, sensitive to site, and encourage sensual gratification and ecological awareness.”
Windows af various shapes and sizes are integral to the interior and exterior design.

ANNAPOLIS HOME
To achieve his vision, Gurney uses natural materials and an unusually high level of detail. A line of horizontal windows is at eye-level with the owner’s desk chair. One can swivel in the chair and admire views of the creek, pine forest and marsh. With a swivel in the opposite direction, one may gaze deeply into the home’s meditative interior. Vertical floor-to-ceiling window walls and a dynamic floor plan stir the senses as the home responds to weathers and fades from light to dark. Even doors are unusual. “You won’t see standard 6-foot doors in this home. That does not happen. Changing the height of the doors changes the dynamics completely, so we can play games with the scale,” says Gurney. When you consider the height of the home, its cantilevered decks, pathways, ramps and window walls, one forgets that this design arose from the rotting timbers of a tired Dutch Colonial, a home also based on a solid square. Maybe that is why the new residence does not intrude upon the creek and almost seems friendly. The square lives, stripped down to its essential form and able to coexist with floodwaters and storms. It is not a replacement for a destroyed home, but a repository for a refreshed form. AH

Robert Clark is a sixth-generation Annapolitan; it is appropriate that his office recalls Old Annapolis elegance.

Robert Clark considers himself the most fortunate of men. His “dream job” as president and CEO of Historic Annapolis follows a successful career as a securities and marketing executive with E. F. Hutton, Paine Webber and UBS Wealth Management. And when he’s not in his office at Historic Annapolis’s new headquarters at Brice House on East Street, he enjoys the lifestyle that downtown Annapolis affords him, whether it’s walking to favorite restaurants (“Don’t miss the crab cakes and strawberryrhubarb pie at Chick and Ruth’s!”) or relaxing at home with his wife, Stephanie, and enjoying visits from his daughters and grandchildren.
Robert Clark and four grandchildren.
Warm reds and golds in oriental rugs, walls and ceiling unify the interior.
“I can’t imagine a more extraordinary retirement than living in the historic district of one of the most beautiful cities on the planet,” says the affable and enthusiastic Clark, Historic Annapolis’s biggest cheerleader, who also serves on the boards of The Friends of St. John’s College and the Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Convention and Visitors Bureau, and is a member of the City of Annapolis Heritage Commission. Clark has also held a seat on the board of trustees at Poplar Forest, Thomas Jefferson’s retreat home in Lynchburg, Virginia, as well as serving as its chairman of the board.
Annapolis, and became the president and CEO two years later. The organization at that time was headquartered in the Shiplap House on Pinkney Street. Clark encouraged the state to purchase Brice House, and Historic Annapolis moved in last year. Taking pride of place in Clark’s office is an oil painting by 19th-century artist Francis Mayer, whose view from his Shiplap House studio was not appreciably different from what it is today, which is appropriate given that one of the missions of Historic Annapolis is to “preserve and protect the historic places, objects and stories of Maryland’s capital city. ...”
Clark is not only a sixth-generation Marylander, but a sixth-generation Annapolitan as well, descended from a trio of brothers who arrived from Northern Ireland in the 1790s to work for Charles Carroll. (Clarksville, Maryland, in Howard County, is named for one of the brothers, David.)
Clark credits his 45-year business career with helping him set the tone for what the organization hopes to accomplish, but is also quick to praise the “remarkable” 45-person staff who helps get things done on a $3 million annual budget.
Courtesy of his financial career, which provided him with a “wonderful, rich experience,” Clark has lived not only in Annapolis but also in New York City, Long Island and Connecticut. “But we always knew Annapolis would be our final resting place,” says Clark, whose own two daughters were raised in Annapolis. After retiring in 2010, Clark, a history buff who is fascinated with Thomas Jefferson, was invited to serve on the board of Historic

“We’re the advocates and stewards of our city’s preservation,” says Clark, adding that the organization’s new designation as a Smithsonian Affiliate will go a long way toward helping them achieve their goals. Smithsonian Affiliates partner with the Smithsonian Institution and cultural organizations and museums to facilitate educational collaborations, traveling exhibitions and the loan of historical artifacts. Historic Annapolis is one of just six affiliates in Maryland, and the only one in Annapolis.

The Clarks purchased the lot for their 5,000-square-foot home in 2006. Twenty-eight hundred people were on the waiting list.

ANNAPOLIS HOME
The home, while not historic, is situated in Acton’s Landing, one of Annapolis’s most charming enclaves sited on a property purchased in 1651 by Richard Acton.
Clark is also enthusiastic about the three-year restoration project now underway at Brice House, which will be accomplished with the guidance of Colonial Williamsburg. “It will be an ‘aha’ moment when this house opens to the public,” says Clark, noting that one of the projects already underway is the development of a permanent exhibit tracing the history of Annapolis through its objects and artifacts. “It’s going to be very cool!” he says. It’s not surprising that someone who lauds the “rich pageantry of living in downtown Annapolis” has chosen a home that, while not historic itself, is situated on property that was originally purchased in 1651 by one Richard Acton and was known by the townspeople as Acton’s Land. Today Acton’s Landing by Madison Homes is an enclave of 106 single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums that sits on the site of the original Anne Arundel Medical Center in Murray Hill. The community is surrounded by centuries-old houses and is just a short stroll away from Spa Creek, downtown and the state capitol. Or, as Clark likes to say, “I can walk the 7/10 mile to work in 8 minutes.” The Clarks purchased their 5,000-square-foot home in 2006 before the home had even been built; “There were 2800 people on the waiting list!” Clark explains. They hired Annapolis architect Gary Schwerzler to create an interior floor plan and details that would be consistent with the historic character of the city, and when construction was
completed turned to Long Island interior designer Richard Piemonte, with whom they had worked on their previous home in New York. Because the Clarks wanted to repurpose many of their furnishings, Piemonte used a similar color palette as before with rich shades of claret and sienna predominating. The home’s high-end finishes feature such touches as Venetian gem plasterwork, Canadian limestone fireplace, coffered ceiling with woven leather insets, custom millwork evident in such elements as fluted columns and intricate crown moldings, and ultrasuede wallcoverings. The couple lived in an Annapolis apartment during the nine-month project, and finally moved in to their “forever” home in 2007, from which they have no intention of moving. AH

A GARDEN AS P I R I N G T O B E A R T
When I was a Getty Scholar at the Getty Center in 2004–5, I looked out every day at the spectacular garden designed by artist Robert Irwin and even had a chance to go on a tour of the garden with Irwin himself. It is surely among the most stunning landscape projects in the United States. The garden is part of the Getty Center, which includes the Getty Museum that houses some of the finest paintings, sculpture and photography in the world. Designed by Richard Meier, the Getty Center, with its panoramic views and beige travertine surfaces that reflect the bright California sun, is an architectural feat. When architect Richard Meier first saw artist Robert Irwin’s garden proposal he protested. Meier did not see Irwin’s design as complementing his architectural design. Fortunately, Irwin insisted on his independence as an artist and pursued the garden design as he envisioned it. An environmental sculptor (as opposed to a landscape architect), Irwin conceived the garden as “a sculpture in the form of a garden aspiring to be art.” The garden, both organic and highly structured, adds a whole additional experience to Meier’s five interconnected two-story pavilions made of 16,000 tons of travertine quarried from Italy.

Visitors to the garden walk down a zigzag pattern on a path alongside large boulders appearing to tumble down a slope. Streams flow beside the path and under stone bridges. Irwin conceived the stream, selection of flowers and leafy plants so that the visitor would experience a feast of the senses—the colors, smells, sounds and textures are all part of the experience. The end of the slope opens onto a plaza-like space with seating areas and 15-foot metal umbrellas of overflowing bougainvillea. When you lean over a carnelian granite wall, you see and hear 20 feet of plunging water pour into a “bowl garden” with an azalea maze in the center. For Annapolitans, Los Angeles is on the other side of the country, but, if for no other reason, it is worth a special visit to experience the Getty Center and Irwin’s garden. AH

Vibrant reds and greens combine in this living wreath made of kalanchoe and various ferns.
Living Wreaths
FOR THE HOLIDAYS By Kymberly Taylor | Photography courtesy of Longwood Gardens
62
ANNAPOLIS HOME
This living wreath is created with various succulents and ferns.
It is not hard to make your own living wreath. Wow your friends and try something new this holiday season! MATERIALS • 12-inch wire wreath form • dried green moss or sphagnum found at craft store • green floral twine • 30 small living plants such kalanchoe, maidenhair fern, succulents, African violets Plunge moss in a bucket of water and soak for 15 minutes. It will be less messy and will mold to the frame once wet. Lay your wreath down flat. Take spool of twine and tie one end onto your wreath. Wring out moss and press a section right down into the wreath form. Remove plant from container, lay on top of moss. Cover roots with another piece of moss and wrap twine three of four times around the roots of the plant and wreath form. Then, repeat. Lay another section of moss down. Remove the next plant, press into frame. Cover roots system with moss and wind twine around it securely, three or four times.
Repeat until your wreath is full and beautiful! Care for and maintain your living wreath by providing it with natural light and occasionally soaking it in your bathtub. Mist occasionally with a solution of water and liquid fertilizer. The fertilizer will not hurt the blooms.
Keep an eye out in Annapolis for classes on how to make living wreaths. In the meantime, Jennifer from Inspiration Nest has a very good YouTube video detailing each step. A living wreath ensures your holiday will last all year round. Visit Longwood Gardens and experience more extraordinary greenery, longwoodgardens.org.

Straight Up on Dining Out
La Cuchara Chic Basque Dining
By Christine Fillat • Photography by Janet Kahoe and John Mount
The quest for great food takes us to unexpected places, down less traveled roads, across bridges, over quick rivers. Nestled between the Light Rail and the Jones Falls in the Baltimore Meadow Mill building that once housed a London Fog factory, is an homage to the food of the Basque region. Chef Ben Lefenfeld, co-owner with his wife, Amy, and his brother, Jacob, helms this simply elegant wood fire–scented establishment, La Cuchara. The Spoon. “The Basque region produces an amazing bounty of seafood and vegetables and, being right on the coastline, you have the mountains that really come right up against [the shore],” says Lefenfeld. “There’s lots of mushrooms and lots of grazing areas for sheep and goats. The Bay of Biscay—you talk about some of the best seafood found in the world ... Galician mussels, octopus, the seafood in general is just unreal. That’s the basis of it. It’s just the bounty of the ingredients found in the area.” La Cuchara is a theater for the senses, and food is performance art. There is an excitement in the combination of cheeses, vinegars, hams, sausages, seafood and seasonal vegetables, all with the essence of the open fire upon which much of the food is cooked. “[The fire] really makes for kind of a sensual ingredient to a lot of the dishes that are produced,” states Lefenfeld. “Here at the restaurant we can’t necessarily cook every single dish directly over

the wood grill, but, what we do is, throughout the day we might smoke onions or garlic and incorporate that into the sauce or grill vegetables that end up becoming a picada, which really does lend itself to … capturing some of the wood grill that moves throughout the entire meal.” While encountering an unfamiliar cuisine may be a bit daunting, the tasting menu takes all of the guesswork out of decision-making. The chef chooses from the different sections of the menu to custom create a meal. My dining companion and I opted to go that route. At $59 a person, this is a great way to experience what La Cuchara does best. And boy, did we feel that we were being taken care of in a big way, beginning with sardines with a lemon aioli and Provençale sauce, where the sardines are giant and the sauce is spicy. A little bit of heaven on a plate is the Jamón Croquette, where bits of serrano ham, manchego cheese and a bechamel sauce are deep fried into a ball of creamy, salty bliss. So blissful that we ordered an additional serving, just to go to that place once again. The next plates arrived in a flurry with garlicy potatoes on a spicy Provençale sauce, and an arugula salad with pepitas, artisanal blue cheese and honey vinaigrette. More arugula accompanies the crispy oysters in what may be the only mysterious item on the menu. The oysters are so delicate that a mere essence of oyster remains in the crispy coating.
For mushroom lovers like myself, the chanterelle salad delights with spinach, a lacing of lemon and a sprinkling of hazelnuts. We were served swordfish for the main dish. Deftly cooked with charred broccoli, a fine dice of sweet potato and a fennel picada, this dish is the essence of Basque cooking. To accompany our meal, we ordered a flight of Tempranillo, with three distinctly different half-glasses of this Spanish wine. The bar menu includes a collection of cocktails, wines and beers, with Spanish cider on tap. The kitchen bakes its own bread and desserts. A chocolate torte becomes seasonal with a bit of applesauce. Thinly sliced apples over a creamy custard make up the apple torte, with a flaky crust. A pot of French-press coffee rounds out a firstrate meal. Even though we ate our way through a good bit of food, we never felt overwhelmed by it. We had the perfect amount of everything. At La Cuchara, you feel you are in capable hands. The front of the house is pleasant. The wait staff is capable. The food is masterful. The dinner crowd is sophisticated. When asked who inspires him, Chef Lefenfeld looked right to his staff. “My culinary heroes are just the line cooks that help us recreate and duplicate some of the things day after day that make this place special.” And special is what you will experience at La Cuchara.
