Artistic Flair on the Severn

Detail of interior designed by Katalin Farnady. Photograph by Jennifer Hughes.

An Annapolis interior designer transforms a Severn Riverfront home with ingenuity and artistry.

Vol. 8, No. 5 2017 23

PUBLISHERS’ LETTER It took a great team of people to create our cover story in which we feature five musicians from the Annapolis Symphony in a stunning remodeled home designed by architect Scarlett Breeding. We spent a full day rearranging furniture (and cars), adjusting lighting, creating floral displays, and posing the musicians to create this beautiful spread. Our purpose is both to showcase this elegant home and to promote the Symphony, one of the outstanding artistic resources in Annapolis. Annapolis is a city of sailing, a city of historic architecture and a city of the arts. We value all of these things that make Annapolis an exceptional place to live. In addition to the symphony show house, we present the interior design work of two professionals, Stephanie Simmon of Karen Renée Interior Design and Katalin Farnady of Farnady Interiors. From all three of these projects, you get a view of the the impressive design work happening in the Annapolis area. Enjoy,

Kimberly Valerio has been principal flutist with the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra since 1998. A Chicago native, she met her husband at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University where they were both attending school. The couple resides with their son in the Arnold, MD area, where they spend summers sailing the Chesapeake and winters wishing they were sailing to warmer climates.

ANNAPOLIS HOME

If this residence, in the Wardour neighborhood of Annapolis, were a symphony, it would be Mozart’s 39th in E flat major, known for both its grandeur and symmetry. According to a concertgoer in 1792, the opening movement was “so majestic that it surprised even the most insensitive listener and non-expert.” So too, this Annapolis home, once called “Main Stay.” Local lore has it that this home served as Woodrow Wilson’s offices from 1913 to 1921; Its architecture, in the Colonial Revival style, hearkens back to an even earlier time—Annapolis’ founding. But age is a double-edged sword for a historic masterpiece, bestowing both splendor and vulnerability, and so, after acquiring the 1.7-acre waterfront property, homeowners Michelle LaRose and Nathan Sowden hired Alt Breeding Schwarz Architects to transform the property’s old, detached guest house into an elegant swimming pool complex and rebuild the house’s stately, yet neglected, western wing.

Vol. 8, No. 5 2017 29

The real soloist in the kitchen is the grand island made from two imported woods: amboyna burl and anigre.

30

ANNAPOLIS HOME

As with our great composer, the firm’s marching orders were clear: to create something of beauty and balance that complemented the original home but also accommodated the needs of a young family. One of the first additions was a voluptuous library, lined with custom rosewood shelving and emerald draperies. Like the symphony’s first movement, flush with fanfares, the room makes a statement, but it also has complexity as discreet panels lead to hidden function—a mudroom, a coat closet, a powder room and a hallway.

Fatma Daglar is the principal oboist of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra. She is also the oboist of the acclaimed chamber ensemble, Zéphyros Winds, and the principal oboist of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, and PostClassical Ensemble. She teaches at UMBC, St. Mary’s College of Maryland and Towson University. She makes her own reeds while listening to podcasts.

Critics praise No. 39 for its seamless melodies, in which apparent contradictions play out with unexpected ease. Similarly, the dark and dramatic library transitions to a sunny open kitchen reflecting Alt Breeding Schwarz’s integrated approach, which balances architectural design with interior design, ensuring cohesion. “All of the moldings throughout the space and the proportions of the glass cabinets in the library and the kitchen are the same dimensions,” Richard Anuszkiewicz, the firm’s Executive Director of the Kitchen and Bath/Casework Division, explains. Despite swoon-worthy details like a royal blue La Cornue range; antique, beveled mirrors that obscure two refrigerators; and a Calacatta Marble backsplash, the real soloist in the kitchen is the grand island, made from two imported woods: amboyna burl and anigre. The piece, created by Premier Custom Cabinetry, was inspired by fine furniture. In another life, it could have adorned Woodrow Wilson’s smoking room— supposedly located on the second floor. But even in its attention to luxury, the Alt Breeding Schwarz team did not neglect utility, with the countertop coated for maximum durability. You can add any number of chandeliers—two, in this case—but without high ceilings, a large space will flounder. In order to circumvent the limitations of the structure, the architects lowered the floor level when

Contemporary art winds it way throughout the home, like a fugue.

Vol. 8, No. 5 2017 31

Ed Goldstein joined the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra at the age of 20. He is about to start his 44th season with the Orchestra. Equally at home playing jazz or classical tuba, he is a founding member and director of the Peabody Ragtime Ensemble and the Baltimore Jazz Orchestra. He is the recipient of the first Alumni Achievement Award given by the Peabody Institute Alumni Association and is a frequent guest on WBJC’s program “Face the Music.”

This room is awakened by soft pastels and notes of blue.

Comfortable furnishings for this pool deck provide a place to pause. they rebuilt the foundation. “All of a sudden, it gave us a height in proportion to the width of the room,” says Scarlett Breeding, Principal Architect at Alt Breeding Schwarz. “This was one of the most successful aspects of the house.” Upstairs, the family gained a master suite, with his and her bathrooms, and a Palladian window that echoes the front entry, like an ostinato, or repeated melody. Although the original house didn’t need any major tuning architecturally, it did benefit from design enhancements. In the living room, Breeding added double Baccarat chandeliers and replastered the ceiling to highlight detailed moldings. A connector room off the kitchen acquired garden tones and a deep window seat, perfect for stowing backpacks. The front entry, previously spoiled by an awning, won back its authenticity and character with Bevolo gas lanterns and a pineapple yellow door, long a symbol of hospitality. Inside, Breeding juxtaposed neutral pieces from the homeowner’s

preexisting collection with a vivid landscape, for presence. “We really prefer for our spaces to look like they’ve traveled through time, that it’s not all new, but developed.” And, just like that, we’re back in the world of music, with a composition that reflects the values of an epoch even as it embraces novelty. AH

Make a Difference top real estate agents

in annapolis

A historic destination on the Chesapeake Bay, Annapolis is unlike any other city in the United States. With a region this complex and extraordinary, you need an exceptionally skilled real estate agent. With the Internet, we can scroll through houses for sale and sell on our own. But the Internet is no substitute for an agent who knows the ins and outs of distinct neighborhoods, the different depths of water of waterfront homes, the unique features and even flaws of a particular property. That is why we have been highly selective in the agents we approached for this special real estate advertising section. We know them all and, most importantly, know that they sell homes vigorously, with marketing plans to ensure that the homes they list are in the forefront. That’s why they are most certainly among the top agents in the Annapolis area.

They share their thoughts on what we need to know about the Annapolis market. “The Annapolis Real Estate market is all about the water—the difference in views, access and restrictions. When you are considering buying or selling your home, it’s important to have an authority with knowledge of what truly makes Annapolis so unique: direct water access,” says Creig Northrop of The Creig Northrop Team. Carol Snyder, of Carol Snyder Group agrees. “It is important to take into consideration your specific location. Your location will determine your water-access based on your lot or your community, the public schools that service the property and the property tax-rate for the home.” Travis Gray of Coldwell Banker points out, “When it comes to waterfront real estate in Annapolis no two properties are alike. Sellers should focus on highlighting their properties best features; deep water, big views, protected pier, access to the bay.” Don’t overlook the hidden gems, cautions Connie Cadwell of Coldwell Banker. “Sometimes you have to look beyond the obvious. There could be ways to improve a property to make it your dream home or to raise its value.” Elizabeth Heinsohn of Long and Foster, notes that “The Annapolis market has never been better. Lifestyle is the focus of today’s buyers, and Annapolis has it all. Boating, fine dining, theater, history and a

strong sense of community. Barbara Tower of The Tower Team calls attention to its variety and notes the city has “Incredible diversity! The preserved and vibrant central historic town is surrounded by charming 19th and 20th century houses with gardens and parking. There are many ways to live among the bays, rivers, creeks and waterways that define Annapolis.”

“There is the purpose of design and there are the rules…there should also be rule breaking. I like to mix things that don’t necessarily go hand in hand but at the end, when the project is finished, all work in harmony. ” - Katalin Farnady, Farnady Interiors

ANNAPOLIS HOME

Before Kim and Mark McVicker began their redecorating journey, their home’s personality ranged from traditional to casual modern. Art was not in the equation. Kim did not care much for the art she knew about—the neatly framed oil paintings that hung in her parents’ house. How did she get from that staid home to her current one, filled with artistic flair and pulsing with light and bold gestures, organic materials and fine custom finishes? It did not happen over night. The secret is Katalin Farnady, of Farnady Interiors based in Annapolis. Farnady, describing her first meeting with Kim, says, “She knew what she didn’t want.” So the decorator experimented. And as she spent more time getting to know Kim and Mark, she discovered the couple’s bright and adventurous spirits within. This is what Farnady searches for and seeks to manifest through each design—a client’s personal spirit. “Spirit and emotion are the qualities I like to get into a room. I feel like that as long as you have a room that can speak for itself and has a spirit, you’re done,” says Farnady. After a series of formal presentations to her client, Farnady learned tangible things as well, mainly that Kim loves shells, natural materials, and that her favorite color combination is brown and white. “I said ‘say no more. I am going to carry that through,’” recalls Farnady. And she did. In the living room, she manipulated these two tones by mixing shades, patterns, and fabrics. Embedded in each space is a striking piece of artwork, an unexpected combination of patterns, a piece of furniture that startles then becomes a meditation on form. For instance, a cluster of balls float above the fire place. The linen covering the chairs in geometric brown and white patterns are offset dramatically by the custom rug’s flowing lines. A side table is made from a turtle shell with a mirror top. Shades of brown and white continue forward into the velvet sofa, strewn with alligator pillows; balancing the darker hues are window treatments, composed of creamy suede executed by Margaret Blunt of Sew Beautiful, and a white coffee table with a high shine. Farnady incorporated Kim’s taste into the design: the room is bright and airy, and white corals and shells line the built-in bookcases.

Vol. 8, No. 5 2017 53

The dining room is finished by a commanding silver leather valence stitched by the workroom of Margaret Blunt of Sew Beautiful. A giant shell sits on the dining table while white corals and sea shells, loved by the homeowners, appear on the built-in shelves.

ANNAPOLIS HOME

Farnady has her own thoughts about the discipline of design: “There is the purpose of design and there are the rules … there should also be rule breaking. I like to mix things that don’t necessarily go hand in hand but at the end, when the project is finished, all work in harmony.” This kind of design cycle, when all things, all circles and triangles converge, says Farnady, “is music to my ears.” An example of this kind of symphony is the dining room. The huge chain motif on the oversized customdesigned rug captivate. The shadings inside the chains are the same color values that appear in the living room. The chains also echo the silvers and golds in the striped wall coverings. The silver leather valence, also executed by Sew Beautiful, stands out in its own brilliance with masterful stitching. The rug’s “straightforward meaning is to tie together everything in the room,” says Farnady, but also, “It is about connection, and like a chain it connects the two rooms.” The dining room became an opportunity for a further artistic conversion when Farnady showed Kim a work by Baltimore artist Amanda Boutell that incorporates snakeskin, fabric swatches and leftover pieces of jewelry. “She loved it, and after this said, ‘What else do you got?’”

Every room in this home has one or two things that are visually arresting. In the kitchen, three black tiered chandeliers are sculptural and cast circles of light when turned on.

Vol. 8, No. 5 2017 55

“By the time we got to the master bedroom I could bring in more art,” says Farnady. The client wanted her bedroom to look like an upscale hotel, with organic clean forms. Golds and browns cycle through the room. There is a leather headboard and frame complemented by nightstands covered in alligator embossed leather. An adjacent three-dimensional rectangular dresser draws the eye. With pointy triangles and no hardware at all, it exudes the mysterious charm of an armadillo. A water color on rice paper by painter Patrice Drago is framed in glass on the wall. This creates a delicacy that balances the heavier furnishings and blacks. A hand painted grass cloth wallpaper in the adjacent hall invites inspection. Included in the hall is something else unusual, a work in reverse: a side table that has raw wood on the outside but is completely finished underneath. The McVickers love their home. But, according to Kim, adding artistic flair was a process. “I didn’t want to go all crazy on art. It grew on me and I really have an appreciation now… art makes or breaks a room. The fact that Katalin was able to do that for me, to help me see this, may be one of the very best things that’s happened here.” This house is certainly “happening,” for there is a kind of centrifugal force here, as materials and colors whirl and settle. Farnady defines a finished room as “a design that circles itself and speaks for itself.” This home invites connection and something rare: conversation with you. AH

Up against hand-painted grass cloth wallpaper is something unusual to contemplate: a side table that has raw wood on the outside but is completely finished underneath.

The bedroom shades and all the shades in the home are motorized, and automatically lower when the sun strikes.

When Shirley and Robert Edwards moved to Annapolis they wanted a fresh start, style-wise. As luck would have it, the buyers of their old home in Olney, Maryland, bought not only their house, but just about everything in it, giving them just the impetus they needed. “It was a blank slate,” says Shirley of the 4-bedroom home on Mill Creek that they purchased five years ago. The home was designed by Annapolis architect Thomas D. Davies Jr. The couple’s former home was more traditional in style, but this time around the homeowners—both of whom work in the accounting industry—decided to go “transitional (i.e., between traditional and modern), with a fresher, brighter look. Helping them achieve that vision was interior designer Stephanie Simmons, of Karen Renée Interior Design, in Severna Park. “I had collected lots of photos of interiors I liked, and Stephanie’s style matched what we had in mind,” says Shirley. Structurally, the couple made very few changes to the home, apart from reconfiguring the basement to include a gym in place of two existing bedrooms. The remaining alterations to the first floor living space and master bedroom and bath were primarily decorative. Using soft tones of blues and grays offset by crisp white trim, Simmons gave the couple an interior that reflects the home’s quarter-acre waterfront site. “Serene” is how Simmons describes the color palette of the home. “We wanted to echo the feeling of being on the water,” she says. That was accomplished with the use of Benjamin Moore paints in colors such as Silver Lake and Blue Lace on the first floor, and Silver Mist and Pale Smoke in the master suite. Benjamin Moore’s Super White adds a note of brightness to the muted palette. The furnishings and fabrics in the breakfast room were designed to echo the curved configuration of the windows, with blue and white Robert Allen draperies framing the water view. The cool tones in the room also nicely complement the warmer shades of the Brazilian cherry hardwood floors.

A window seat opens to generous views admired by the household cat.

Since the breakfast room is open to the living room, Simmons kept the same color scheme throughout for a seamless flow. The couple didn’t particularly care for the existing kitchen, but it turned out that the footprint of the room was just fine, and all that was needed were cosmetic touches. “You don’t always have to have a major renovation project,” says Simmons. The Ann Sacks stove backsplash that Shirley found on Houzz was the inspiration point for the kitchen, and a coordinating subway tile backsplash behind the sink offers an additional touch of sparkle. Painted white cabinets and a white marble countertop gave the couple the light, bright kitchen they were looking for.

A metallic grass cloth wall covering adds drama to the bedroom niche.

The master bedroom has become the Edwards’ spa-like retreat, with its custom-designed bed with nail-studded velvet headboard and footboard. As the niche in which the bed lies is too small for artwork, Simmons dressed the wall in a metallic grasscloth. “The recessed lighting and subtle sheen of the wallpaper make a dramatic backdrop,” says Simmons. With a fresh coat of paint and new furniture and accessories, the homeowners got the clean start they were looking for. As for Shirley, the house is like a cool-blue lake she can wade in endlessly. “I’m looking forward to retiring so I can spend even more time at home.”

CONTEMPORARY DESIGN, TIMELESS COMFORT Throughout our history, Loewen has delivered an unrivaled aesthetic that both complements and inspires changes in architectural trends. The timeless comfort that radiates from our Douglas Fir and Mahogany windows and doors provides the perfect contrast of warmth to contemporary design, while the ever-changing patinas of our copper and bronze clad products offer rich, deep textures that are both contemporary and future-facing in their own right. We craft our windows and doors with aesthetic value that endures — just like the long-lasting performance of all our products. We look forward to helping you realize your vision.
