Finding New Context This interview with California designer Darren Romanelli is both inspiring and validating. He talks about his college days, his time in fashion and the development of his brand “DRx” (aka Dr. Romanelli). “To me, being creative is tapping into your inspiration on the daily, going deep and almost getting lost in it. It’s the idea of recognizing your creativity, getting to know it and building with it. It’s what I chase everyday: that rush of locking in. Suggested by Mark Mordecai _ Interview

Somewhere Serious Written prior to the opening of the New Design Museum in Holland Park (opposite), Vicky Richardson interviews the major players in the refurbishment/design of the former Commonwealth Institue, including architect John Pawson (above). The Case for Repackaging Online shopping experiences often end the same way. A parcel arrives, packed within other parcels like cardboard Russian dolls. Already too large to fit through a letterbox, the item travels additionally cushioned by air-filled plastic bags, coils of thick brown paper, or on a soft bedding of foam peanuts. Sometimes all three. The mound of packaging that results is the physical manifestation of buying habits driven by conveniences. These proportions of packaging to product are the unhappy consequence of e-commerce. “This report is a step forward for packaging. Less conventional, more intelligent, less resources = more”. Suggested by Irene Garcia Muñoz _ Packaging

Two Tribes The arrival of social platforms was supposed to liberate us from the monopoly of the media, but data scientist and journalist Jonathan Stray asks if it has simply handed more power to the old guard. It’s an interesting read and it has some lovely illustration to accompany it as well. The entire magazine is worth a read actually. The concept of the mag is to give you weapons of reason and conversation to use against current socio-political issues. This month’s issue is about “Power.” Suggested by Gemma Batterby _ Social Media Politics

SPR ING IN NEW HAMPSHIRE Too green the springing April grass, Too blue the silver-speckled sky, For me to linger here, alas, While happy winds go laughing by, Wasting the golden hours indoors, Washing windows and scrubbing floors. Too wonderful the April night, Too faintly sweet the first May flowers, The stars too gloriously bright, For me to spend the evening hours, When fields are fresh and streams are leaping, Wearied, exhausted, dully sleeping. Claude McKay
