Head Coach Joe Lombardi leads the Crimson Hawks into his seventh season as the IUP menā€™s basketball head coach in 2012-13. With an impressive record of 123-59, Lombardi looks to improve upon an outstanding 2011-12 season. Under Lombardi, the Crimson Hawks have reached the postseason in each of the last ļ¬ve years. IUP suļ¬€ered key losses in the form of guards Ashton Smith and Julian Sanders who averaged 18.2 and 17.3 points per game, respectively, but the Crimson Hawks welcome back guards Anthony Wells (pictured) and Josh Wiegand as well as forward Marcel Souberbielle. Wells and Souberbielle were both 2012 postseason award candidates. The Crimson Hawks will also get a boost with the return of 2010-11 letterwinner Scooter Renkin who was redshirted for the 2011-12 season. In addition to Wells, Wiegand, Souberbielle and Renkin are returning forwards Dan Ayebo, Chris Edwards and Devon Cottrell as well as returning guard Devante Chance. Junior Gonzaga transfer Mathis Keita leads the list of newcomers for the 2012-13 season also highlighted by Rhode Island transfer Blake Vedder, C. Benjamin Mickens, Anthony Rocco, Tyler Sabino and Cornell Yarde II. Last season, the Crimson Hawks posted an impressive 23-6 record with a 19-3 record in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West, good enough for a ļ¬rst place division ļ¬nish. The Crimson Hawks also ļ¬nished out the season with a 10th national ranking. The only losses the Crimson Hawks suļ¬€ered came at the hands of Bloomsburg, West Virginia Wesleyan, Mercyhurst, California, West Chester in the PSAC Tournament and Shaw in the NCAA Regional Tournament. Expectations for the 2012-13 season are high, as the Crimson Hawks were chosen to ļ¬nish ļ¬rst in the preseason menā€™s basketball coachesā€™ poll. IUP has won the PSAC tournament championship twice in the last three seasons. Slippery Rock ļ¬nished second in the poll and Gannon rounded out the top three.

H EAD CO C O ACH AC H JO E LO M MB B AR ARDI DI SEVENTH SEASON Y O U N G S T O W N S T AT E ā€˜ 8 811 Joe Lombardi enters his seventh season as the head coach of the IUP menā€™s basketball program after leading the Crimson Hawks to a third consecutive PSAC regular season title and an appearance in the NCAA tournament for a fourth straight season in 2011-12. Under the guidance of Lombardi, IUP has compiled a record of 104-23 in the last four years, and the Crimson Hawks are just one of three teams in the country to finish ranked in the top 25 nationally in three consecutive seasons. A major contributor in the previous four seasons has been guard Ashton Smith, who was named to the NABC Division II All-American squad a season ago. Smith was also named the PSAC West Player of the Year after leading the Crimson Hawks in scoring at 18.2 points per game.

No. 1 early in the 1995-96 season. IUP is one of only two teams from the PSAC to play in the menā€™s basketball championship game and the first since Cheyney in 1978. For his teamā€™s accomplishments, Lombardi was named the PSAC West Coach of the Year, the first for an IUP menā€™s basketball coach in 15 years, and was selected the Basketball Times Division II National Coach of the Year. In 2008-09 the Crimson Hawks finished 22-8, a nine-game improvement from the previous season, and returned to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2005, defeating perennial national power Virginia Union in the opening round. When Lombardi was hired at IUP in April 2006, he brought with him more than 20 years of coaching experience including 21 on the Division I level and the previous three as an assistant at Pitt under head coach Jamie Dixon.

In 2010-11, the Crimson Hawks claimed their second straight PSAC title and advanced to the Atlantic Region Championship after finishing the season with a 26-6 record. IUP was 12-2 in the PSAC West before tallying conference tournament wins over Cal, East Stroudsburg, and Slippery Rock in the championship game. 2009-10 was an historic season that ended with the Crimson Hawks coming within one win of the first NCAA national championship in any sport in school history. IUP won the Atlantic Region title by sweeping Fairmont State, West Virginia State and West Liberty at Memorial Field House to advance to the Elite Eight in Springfield, Mass., for the first time since 2002. The Crimson Hawks then defeated Valdosta State and St. Cloud State before losing to Cal Poly Pomona in the championship game that was televised nationally by CBS. IUP won a school-record 33 games against only three losses, set a PSAC record with 13 Western Division wins in 14 contests and won the conference tournament championship with victories over Gannon, East Stroudsburg and Kutztown to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The Crimson Hawks were ranked No. 2 in the nation at the end of the season by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, the schoolā€™s highest national ranking since being

Lombardi has strong western Pennsylvania and Indiana connections. He also boasts a wealth of East Coast ties that he has built over his successful career. He grew up in Sharon, PA, graduated from Kennedy Christian (now Kennedy Catholic) High School in 1977, and his wife, Janet, is a native of Indiana. Lombardi was an assistant coach at IUP from 1984-87 under head coach Tom Beck.

His first coaching stops were as a graduate assistant at Ohio University in 1981-82 and one year at his alma mater, Youngstown State, in 1982-83. Lombardi came to IUP in 1984 and helped the team turn a 12-15 record the previous year into a 17-10 slate in 1984-85. Lombardi was a four-year letterman at Youngstown State from 1977-81, serving as team captain in his junior and senior seasons. He graduated with honors with a degree in education from 1981 and then embarked on a coaching career that has brought him back to IUP.

Lombardi helped Pitt post a record of 76-22 from 2003-06. The Panthers advanced to the championship game of the 2004 and 2005 Big East tournaments and made a third consecutive trip to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA tournament at the end of the 2003-04 season, when Pitt set a school record by going 31-5 and won the Big East regular season title.

Lombardi has international coaching experience as a member of the 1992 Pan American National Team coaching staff which participated in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament of the Americas against the United Statesā€™ ā€œDream Team.ā€

Before arriving at Pitt, Lombardi gained a reputation for helping to build overachieving basketball programs. Lombardi served a two-year stint as an assistant at LaSalle from 2001-03 where he worked closely with former All-NBA Rookie selection Rasual Butler.

Joe and Janet Lombardi are the parents of Dom, a graduate assistant coach at the University of Kentucky, Dante and daughter Alyssa.

THE LOMBARDI FILE

Prior to LaSalle, Lombardi spent nine seasons at Saint Bonaventure where he was an assistant coach from 1992-96 and associate head coach from 1996-01. Lombardi helped the Bonnies go 21-10, reach the Atlantic 10 title game and play in the NCAA tournament in 2000.

KOVALCHICK COMPLEX

RESIDENTIAL REVIVAL

TO ENRICH THE QUALITY OF on-campus living, construction began on a Residential Revival project in 2006. The result has been spectacular.

B

eginning in May 2006, IUP embarked on a comprehensive revitalization of its housing that will provide space for 3,900 students when the ļ¬nal phase of the project is completed in fall 2010. The $270-million project, the largest of its kind in the nation, has made IUP a school of choice for an expanding number of students. Within these living and learning communities, IUP oļ¬€ers a wide array of specialty ļ¬‚oors so that students who share academic interests may live near each other. For those who desire extra quiet, study-intensive ļ¬‚oors with stricter noise regulations are available. With information from students themselves on what amenities were most important to them, the Foundation for IUP and the university mapped out an aggressive course of action that has led to replacement of nearly all of the universityā€™s residence halls. There are four diļ¬€erent suite conļ¬gurations with the opportunity to share a suite with one person or three. Students have more control over their privacy since some suites oļ¬€er single sleeping quarters, and they share a bathroom with only one person. Each ļ¬‚oor in the new suites has laundry facilities, a kitchenette and lounge space as well as ample meeting space. Many oļ¬ƒces that perform student services are conveniently located in the ground ļ¬‚oor of these new buildings. A boulevard-style landscaped street is planned to link downtown Indiana to campus and to the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex.
