Bob’s Banter
Greetings from Nina... Hello and welcome to the Christmas edition of Bob’s Banter! Despite the recent cold weather, the village has been very busy! We celebrated the Romeo & Juliet season with various activities and events. We also hosted former Prime Minister Bill English twice. The residents loved having the chance to talk to him in the build-up to the election. In other news, the Gray independent apartments have now opened. A big welcome to all the new Bob Scott residents! The bowling green has been very popular, and we are looking forward to hosting an inter-village tournament in November. Hopefully things will be a bit warmer and dryer by then!
As this newsletter goes to print I will be wrapping up my final farewells at the village. Cathy Hiku will be taking over as village manager. Cathy worked as the assistant manager at our sister village Ernest Rutherford for almost ten years. I am sure everyone will make her welcome. I want to thank everyone who has made my time here so special. Wishing you a happy Christmas and prosperous New Year! Kind regards,
Nina Lunn Village Manager

in 2016, and the this is forecast to grow to 170,212 people by 2050. Ryman villages include 710 dementia beds and demand for care is growing. Every dollar raised for Alzheimer’s New Zealand at our villages this year will be matched dollar for dollar by Ryman Healthcare.
Romeo & Juliet The Royal New Zealand Ballet and Ryman Healthcare season of Romeo & Juliet took our village by storm! One of our many events was line dancing, where Val, our instructor, adapted several dances from the period. Residents were decked out in hats and brightly covered scarves for the dancing. We had a blast trying it out! Another highlight during the month was the Verona high tea for our resthome, hospital and dementia care centre. Three beautiful ballerinas from local dance schools performed some fantastic routines. It was lovely to see residents enjoying such a wonderful afternoon.

Summer menu launched! Our Delicious menus have taken our villages by storm since the launch in February this year. The much-anticipated summer menus will combine age-old favourites along with a few new additions, such as the inclusion of couscous. Hospitality manager Andrew Gibson said that the team concentrated on refining the menus for this edition.
“We’re building on the success of our previous menus by refining the recipes. We know what works now and we’ll build from there. But we also included a few new dishes.” Among these new dishes are chefs Paul Kuronic and Steve Iraia’s crab cake dishes. Paul and Steve both won silver at the New Zealand Hospitality Championships earlier this year, and residents will now get a taste of their creations. And the best new dish on the menu? “Definitely the brisket!” Andrew enthused. The summer menus will be rolled out in October.
Cultural performances July was International Month at the village and we celebrated by holding a cultural show. We started the afternoon with a Porwhiti by Te Mangungu Roopu and Nga umanawa O Te Iwi. Pu
Te Mangungu Roopu and Nga Pumanawa O Te Iwi finished with a waiata. We ended the great day with afternoon tea.
The children dressed in traditional Pacific Island costumes, and they all had fantastic rhythm! Emma Isabela Young performed a Filipino Dance, and even did it with a glass of water on her head! This was followed by an Irish jig, and our activities team performed a Chinese Dragon dance in a homemade costume. It caused quite a few laughs as it looked more like a Mexican wave at times!

Cashin Scholarship open for entries Fozia Tasheem has no doubt that winning the first Cashin Scholarship changed the course of her life. Fozia was studying accounting and information systems at Victoria University and funding her studies was a struggle. Fozia’s mum, Hushn Bano, was working at Malvina Major as a housekeeper, and Fozia took a part time job there. “I did everything I could at the village to get extra shifts.’’ In 2011, she applied for the first Cashin Scholarship and it could not have come at a better time. Now 25, Fozia has just been promoted to a co-ordinator’s role at Datacom in Wellington, so her career is on the up.
The 2018 Cashin Scholarship is now open. Ryman staff and family members undertaking tertiary study in 2018 can apply. Entries close November 24. For more details contact David King at: david.king@rymanhealthcare.com

eown K e t t e Meet Jan
Janette is determined to live life to the fullest and enjoys challenges, so she decided to look for information about chess on her laptop. In a short time, Janette learned almost all the rules. One of our activities coordinators helped her as he could play a little himself.
One morning, Janette Keown asked if someone could teach her to play chess, a game she’s always wanted to play. For Janette, this is no simple matter.
Janette is an amazing inspiration. She has a few hard days but nothing stops her from keeping up her good cheer! She’s so determined to enjoy life she even flew all the way to Venice, Italy, so she could join a Mediterranean cruise. Janette visited Croatia, Greece, Rome, Italy, Monaco, France, and ended the cruise in Spain.
In 1987, Janette was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, but she has never given up the fight to enjoy life. Janette uses a mobile chair to get around and has difficulty moving her left arm and hand
“Even chess is not out of my reach!”
Living at Bob Scott, Janette enjoys meeting residents and friends. She loves the support she receives even while she could still have some independence.
Introducing Heidi O'Reilly Hello, my name is Heidi O’Reilly and I am the clinical manager here at Bob Scott. I was born in Taupo, where my family still lives. I qualified as a registered nurse in 1991, before moving to Australia. I lived in Mount Isa and Darwin for several years and then returned home to New Zealand. I have a love of travelling, which started when we lived in Papua New Guinea when I was a child. Since then I have travelled to Asia and the UK. My favourite place that I have been to in the world is Thailand, Kohsumi in particular. We visited 10 years ago, and it still holds special memories for me. My husband, Brendan and I, have a seven-year-old son named Charlie. For family holidays, we always return to
Taupo to see the family, however, next year we plan to take Charlie to Disneyland. This has caused much excitement in our household. I enjoy taking care off our residents and making sure that they feel at home in our care centre. I love connecting with residents and listening to their stories. The autonomy of being a nurse appeals to me greatly. In my free time, I enjoy reading, watching dramas, gardening and looking after my fitness.
