Weary Dunlop Retirement Village Winter Newsletter 2017

Dunlop’s Diary

A note from Chris... Hello and welcome to the winter edition of Dunlop’s Diary. We are fast approaching our third birthday and it is nice to reflect on the last few years at the village and also to anticipate our future. Ryman is a wonderful company and have supported not only our residents but also our staff who work here at Weary Dunlop. Over the last few months we have celebrated many events in the village. The lifestyle team also organised a fun-filled celebration for Triple A’s 10th anniversary. Residents got involved with the Anzac Day ceremony and Mother’s Day celebrations. We also celebrated Easter with fantastic treats from our wonderful kitchen team.

The village is certainly becoming a great community and credit goes to all of you who help to make our village what it is! Please remember to keep an eye out for our upcoming events and remember that you are welcome to join us at any time! My door is always open if you have any queries. Kind regards g

RECORD BREAKER! MAY 4th 2017

Ngaio Marsh Retirement Village acted as the anchor for the YouTube live stream session. The village was also the first one to host a Triple A class in 2007.

More than 3,000 Ryman Healthcare residents took part in a synchronised functional fitness class to celebrate Ryman’s Triple A (Ageless, Active, Aware) programme’s 10-year anniversary.

Managing Director Simon Challies dusted off his original Triple A shirt from 2007, and took part in the Ngaio Marsh class. He said, that the aim 10 years ago was to preserve residents’ independence, reduce the risks of falls and to get them to try new things. The classes were designed to increase aerobic fitness, strength and flexibility. He had no idea just how popular these classes would become.

The villages were linked via YouTube and residents of villages in both New Zealand and Australia took part. In total, more 3,000 residents of 31 Ryman Villages participated and 28 centenarians took part in the live streamed celebratory session.

Our residents at Weary Dunlop also took part in this fantastic record-breaking event. We had to get up slightly earlier to match our counterparts in New Zealand, but it was well worth it. What a great achievement!

Mt Eliza Fun Run

tastic time

The Weary Dunlop team had a fan

Ryman Healthcare in partnership with the Mount Eliza community raised funds and awareness for Myeloma at the MY Mount Eliza fun run. It was terriďŹ c to see so many residents and staff get together and assist on the day. Some residents and staff ran, while others assisted at water stations or helped to warm up the runners before they started. Ryman has bought the Moodah Estate at Mt Eliza where it intends to build a new village.

Anzac Day Anzac Day was a special occasion. Residents gave their respect and appreciation for the sacriďŹ ce of New Zealand and Australian soldiers during the war. The beautiful service was capped by a delicious morning tea.

Dunlop’s Diary

Introducing Lisa Petana I was born and raised in Samoa, by my parents and I have three older sisters. As I grew up there was never a time I felt alone as my family always stood by me. I have seven children, who helped me when my father was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2001. After my father passed away, I decided to work in New Zealand to support my family back in Samoa. Even though it was hard for me to leave my mother, I believe it was the best thing for me to do. I worked in New Zealand as a pickerpacker and even though it was not the ideal job, it served for a time. After seven years in New Zealand, I studied to become a personal care worker. I graduated with

honours and worked as a carer in New Zealand for eight years, before moving to Melbourne to further my career. Every time I work work, I always think of my parents and how I took care of them. It is what drives me to do a better job! St Patrick's Day was a lot of I would likefun thank my partner forwith staying at Edmund Hillary with me ongreen this journey. God bless outfits, green food, you and thanksand for of everything. course, Guinness!

Mother’s Day On Mother’s Day, our villagers celebrated with a special high tea organised by our fantastic lifestyle team. We also held lunches where residents had the

opportunity to bring their families and loved ones together for the occasion. We hope everyone had a great time.

Graeme was born in Box Hill and grew up in Blackburn on an orchard. He was educated at Scotch College. Graeme always wanted to go back to the orchard as his father was an orchardist after returning from World War 1. The couple married in Brisbane before moving to Melbourne to live on an orchard in Blackburn where they grew apples and pears.

raeme G & e n i Me Lorra et I am pleased to introduce Lorraine and Graeme Moore. Lorraine and Graeme met 65 years ago at the Hawthorn Town Hall where he swept her off the dance floor and into his MG car! Lorraine grew up in Coorparoo, Brisbane, the youngest of four children. She moved to Melbourne to follow in her father’s footsteps working for the Repat Department.

Bowls Tournament This is the third year of the Annual Bowls tournament. Several teams came to compete for the trophy including Glen Waverley, Mount Waverley, Burden Park, Vermont South, and Weary Dunlop. Burden Park took the trophy but we are sure to take it next time! The day was a fantastic success, great weather, food, and company.

After four years in Blackburn, they moved to another orchard in Glen Waverley. During this time their four children were born; three girls and a boy. The family moved to Mooroolbark and then Wheelers Hills before settling near Lismore. Here they bought two properties – Green Pidgeon and Pretty Gully. Their son, Frank, joined them to help manage the properties before they retired and moved to Tenterville. In 2015, Graeme and Lorraine moved to their apartment at Weary Dunlop. They believe that they have the best view in the village and have made many great friends. Staunch Richmond supporters, they describe their lives as ‘happy’ and enjoy all aspects of live at the village.

Dunlop’s Diary

the only way is delicious! A food revolution is under way at Ryman villages in New Zealand and Australia. Ryman Delicious – a complete revamp of the way Ryman delivers food – has just begun with new menus, dishes and a fresh approach to delivering food to Ryman’s 10,000 residents. Ryman Hospitality Manager Andrew Gibson said that Delicious was all about delivering the old-fashioned home cooked meals that residents loved in a way they appreciated. “The starting point was to read every single comment that came in our residents’ survey and to work out exactly what they wanted. They like the classics, they like fresh seasonal ingredients and they want food that is not bland in any way.’’ Delicious has already launched successfully in New Zealand and now those menus will be adapted to fit the Australian market and tastes. The menus also draw inspiration from the 1950s, 60s and 70s. Ryman Healthcare Managing Director Simon Challies said Delicious was a recognition that food was a huge focus for residents.

“We know that mealtimes are the most important part of the day. By giving residents more choice and new options we hope that they will look forward to meal times even more.’’ The new menus will be launched shortly.
