A word from Anna and Lucy Hello and welcome to the Christmas edition of our newsletter. It is a pleasure to watch spring unfold in Cornwall park across the road from our site at Campbell road, which is now looking more and more like a Ryman Village. We have been hosting many fantastic events, including a performance by Ryman favourite the Andrew London Trio band. It was a wonderful afternoon of satire and jazz. We also welcomed Dr Jon Simcock from the Neurological Foundation who gave a fantastic speech on research and development in his field.

Charity partner announced In June, Alzheimer’s NZ was announced as Ryman’s charity partner for the year. Ngaire Dixon, chair of Alzheimer’s New Zealand, was delighted with the announcement as dementia and Alzheimers will become more of an issue in the future. There were more than 62,000 New Zealanders with dementia
in 2016, and the this is forecast to grow to 170,212 people by 2050. Ryman villages include 710 dementia beds and demand for care is growing. Every dollar raised for Alzheimer’s New Zealand at our villages this year will be matched dollar for dollar by Ryman Healthcare.

Construction update The construction site has reached a number of exciting milestones since our last update, says project manager Antony Williams. “We are now starting to plaster the inside of the apartment block (furthest from Campbell Road) and are getting on with much of the internal work, such as fitting doors. We have also begun putting the roof tiles on this block. “In early September, we had a series of council building inspections done, which then meant we could install the windows and start laying bricks.” Antony says the team has been raring to go but the wet and windy weather this winter had caused some disruption to their progress. “The rain doesn’t stop work but the wind does. For safety reasons, the crane cannot lift if the wind is blowing at more than 30km/hour. “That means a lot of the labour has to be done manually instead, and therefore takes longer.”
To counter the effects of the rain inside the building, temporary drainage systems have been put in. These basically consist of blue plastic tubes fitted to the drains of each apartment, which remove water collecting on each level, and will help keep it as dry as possible. “We’re hoping for a much more settled spring and summer!” says Antony. There have been dozens of substantial concrete pours at the site for the floors on each level but now there are just a few minor pours left to do. The last of the big pours was for the flooring of the village centre block (nearest to Campbell Road). “Once the top floor framing and roof structure is complete it will then be at its final height,” says Antony. “It’s quite exciting to see the whole village really starting to take shape now.”

Summer menu launched! Our Delicious menus have taken our villages by storm since the launch in February this year. The much-anticipated summer menus combine age-old favourites along with a few new additions, such as the inclusion of couscous. Hospitality manager Andrew Gibson said that the team concentrated on refining the menus for this edition.
“We’re building on the success of our previous menus by refining the recipes. We know what works now and we’ll build from there. But we also included a few new dishes.” Among these new dishes are chefs Paul Kuronic and Steve Iraia’s crab cake dishes. Paul and Steve both won silver at the New Zealand Hospitality Championships earlier this year, and residents will now get a taste of their creations. And the best new dish on the menu? “Definitely the brisket!” Andrew enthused. The summer menus were rolled out in October.
A feast for the senses The Ryman-backed Age Concern Auckland event celebrated the International Day of the Older person with a menu of entertainment including performances from singing cowboys, Chinese martial arts experts and even the local kindergarten. The singing cowboy was Jock Hume, who delighted the 90-strong crowd with country classics by Jim Reeves and Johnny Cash. Then there was AJ performing keyboard jazz, Angelo D’Souza on the piano accordion and the Epsom Chinese Association who gave
performances of Tai Chi, martial arts and traditional Chinese dance. Raising a few ‘ahhhs’ from the audience were the pre-school children from Blockhouse Bay Kindergarten who sang several nursery rhymes. Ryman Healthcare Sales Advisor Lucy Caldwell said: “It was extremely well attended and the Community Centre looked wonderful with all the balloon decorations on all the tables. It was a really nice event.”

Downsizing and decluttering presentation Lifestyle Management’s Katie Fitzpatrick's presentation on how to declutter and downsize your belongings was so popular that the location had to change from the Ryman Greenlane sales office to the Onehunga Bowling club! Katie said the interest reflected the growth in demand for her services. “A lot of people call their families but everyone’s so busy that they can only afford an afternoon here or there. The process is easier with us helping because there’s not so much emotion attached.” Katie said research showed the task
of downsizing was the biggest thing preventing people from moving out. "There were so many questions at the presentation, it turned into more of a Q&A session," she laughs. “It was great! The questions included how best to get rid of books because they’re really tricky to get rid of and what are the best charities to donate to.” Katie says the other thing they offer is a lump sum for the job so people can budget accordingly. And her top tip? Start with photos and legal papers.
Cashin Scholarship open for entries Fozia Tasheem has no doubt that winning the first Cashin Scholarship changed the course of her life. Fozia was studying accounting and information systems at Victoria University and funding her studies was a struggle. Fozia’s mum, Hushn Bano, was working at Malvina Major as a housekeeper, and Fozia took a part time job there. “I did everything I could at the village to get extra shifts.’’ In 2011, she applied for the first Cashin Scholarship and it could not have come at a better time. Now 25, Fozia has just been promoted to a co-ordinator’s role at Datacom in Wellington, so her career is on the up.
The 2018 Cashin Scholarship is now open. Ryman staff and family members undertaking tertiary study in 2018 can apply. Entries close December 8. For more details contact David King at: david.king@rymanhealthcare.com

Backpackers a boost to productivity You may not realise it but there is a Gallic influence at Greenlane. Over the past months there has been a steady stream of French backpackers working as casual labourers which, according to their boss, site foreman Steve Ingle, resulted in a marked increase in productivity.
As the first crew of girls on site, Valentine Balliard, 25, Clara Mourin, 24, Alexia Siekierka, 22, and Morellas Manon, 22, really enjoyed the experience. But while they loved the work, they all agreed it was just holiday job. So, it’s ‘au revoir las filles’ from Ryman!
But it was less about being French and more about being female, he said, after discovering how well his crew of Kiwi girls worked at the Ryman site in Pukekohe. Steve said it was the same story at Greenlane. “Straightaway we saw the results.”
Neurologist postive on progress in research Neurological expert Dr Jon Simcock presented his Brain Disorders - Progress and Prospects lecture to nearly 100 avid listeners at the Carlton Cornwall Bowling Club in August.
Dr Simcock said there are more than 1,100 neurological disorders but constant advances meant diagnosis and treatment were being developed all the time. When something goes wrong with your nervous system, you can experience difficulty moving, speaking, swallowing, breathing or learning. These symptoms can be brought on by a range of things including brain injuries, strokes or dementia. There were positives however, said Dr Simcock. “The rate of increase in our knowledge of neurological disorders will accelerate with the prospect of effective treatments.” Dr Simcock hopes to continue raising awareness to help more New Zealanders.

younger but I’ve never done anything like the Masters before.” Lorelle says that after qualifying in the 75 plus age group there were three days of play at Muriwai, Pakuranga and Akarana before the final championship play-offs at Remuera Golf Club.

She managed to squeeze in a practice round at Muriwai beforehand but only had time to have a quick walk around the other courses and make notes on where the drains and hazards etc were. “Being in the oldest age group I really wanted to enjoy the event and the people I met.
One of the first residents to move into the new Greenlane village will be gold medalwinning golfer Lorelle Meyer who recently took out the top prize in the New Zealand World Masters championships.
“There were people from all over New Zealand and places such as Italy, Australia and Canada, England, Tahiti and Fiji, and at Pakuranga we even met a friend of my husband’s who now lives at the Ryman village in Howick!”
Not only was Lorelle, 79, one of the oldest participants in the April event, her final score of 153 was also the best out of all the females’ age groups. Incredibly, the modest Lorelle says she wasn’t even going to enter the competition at first.
Lorelle admits the courses were much longer than she’s used to Pauanui, but having played regularly 2-3 times a week certainly helped with her fitness as did her aim of course.
“The family are all better golfers than me. “My husband Bob is always saying I should do these things and he really twisted my arm!” she laughs, admitting that he is actually her number one fan. The Meyers, originally from Remuera but currently based at Pauanui, have had a real love affair with golf. Lorelle’s two daughters both played as teenagers with the eldest one, Pauline, even representing New Zealand, and her granddaughter Melissa went on to play for Auckland. Lorelle says: “Rather than sit at home or caddy I decided to play as well. I love the exercise, that’s a big thing. “I used to do more competitions and I was quite competitive when I was a lot
“My hitting the ball reasonably straight was a great asset,” she says, “And my Stableford points for each round were 41, 41, 35 and 36.” While she was chuffed to win the gold, Lorelle says her and Bob are really excited about shifting into their new Ryman apartment in a few months’ time. They have already sold their Pauanui house and got rid of all the furniture they don’t need and are just renting a house from a friend until the apartment is ready. “We decided we wanted to retire back in Auckland – we only have two daughters and they live in Auckland so that’s where we want to be. “We have already worked out our walking route and I plan to join the Remuera Golf Club,” she says.
