Welcome to Lifestyle We’re pleased to bring you the latest edition of Lifestyle magazine. There’s been a lot happening lately at our Ryman villages in Victoria. With a highlight being the official opening of our Nellie Melba Retirement Village in Wheelers Hill.
It’s that sense of home that Nellie Melba resident Jennett describes. She shares her journey into Nellie Melba, and how important it is to maintain a sense of home. We’re always immensely grateful to our residents for sharing their stories, as there’s no better way for us to convey the true experience of living in one of our villages. Village staff created a very special Mother’s Day recently. It was a perfect opportunity to welcome families and the wider community into our villages, to join in with the celebrations. I always enjoy seeing the great photos from these events. I hope you enjoy reading about the lifestyle and events at our Ryman villages. We welcome you to visit us any time, it’d be great to see you. Best wishes,
Village openings are a great opportunity to recognise the hard work our team of people put into not only building our villages, but also making them into communities that our residents can call home.

VILLAGE EVENT
Mother's Day What better way to celebrate Mother's Day than a tower of decadent treats and tea served in fine China!
Left: Weary Dunlop resident Elaine with her daughter Philippa
Ryman’s Nellie Melba and Weary Dunlop Retirement Villages held beautiful high teas for residents and their families, as well as interested members of the public, in the lead up to Mother’s Day. The maternal magic in the room was captured on camera for posterity, with
images printed and framed for attendees to take home as a keepsake. Chef Peter and his team wowed the crowd with an array of cakes, sweets and pastries, washed down with lovely hot tea and splashes of bubbly.

RESIDENT PROFILE
Feeling a new sense of home It’s interesting how life can change. With time, what was once a busy family home can become a house that is a struggle to maintain by yourself.
That was the case for Jennett, until she sold the family home and moved into an apartment at Ryman’s Nellie Melba Retirement Village in Wheelers Hill. “I have a son who lives in Canada and I lost my beautiful partner 12 years ago. My home was just too much for me to look after. It was costing me a lot of money,” Jennett says. “My sister found this place and thought I might be interested. I went for a drive that day to look at the apartment. It was so lovely.”
Jennett made several visits to the village and talked with village staff before deciding to buy a top-floor apartment. “I’ve never looked back. I had a bigger house, so I needed to condense my things to fit a smaller property, and now I’ve done it.” After a career in fashion design and make-up artistry, Jennett still enjoys working part-time in sales and cosmetics. “I was a dressmaker, sewer and fashion designer for many years. Then I became a make-up artist,” she says. –

“I still work in make-up and I sew a lot for myself.” The beauty of village life is that Jennett can combine those passions with the social aspect of village groups and activities. “I’ve joined the sewing group and take part in games and activities from the lifestyle program,” she says. “I’m going to try and take up bowls.” Jennett regularly catches up with long-time friends and speaks highly of new friends she’s made at Nellie Melba.
“The people here are absolutely fantastic,’’ she says. ‘‘They welcome you, and I love that.” Jennett says her apartment lifestyle is much simpler. She enjoys dining on her balcony and agrees taking care of pot plants is much easier than tending to a large garden. “I ring my son every other day to say, ‘I just want to tell you that I live like a queen now’,” she laughs.
needs change, the village provides serviced apartment living, low care, high care and specialist dementia care right there in the village. “I’m on my own now. I lost my partner, and he was my life,’’ she says. ‘‘I think it just came to a stage where my home wasn’t a home any more. It became a house. Now I’ve got my home back and it’s absolutely magnificent. I just love it.” Jennett and fellow resident Marilyn, enjoying Mother's Day at the village

'Granny Melba' would be thrilled! Nellie Melba Retirement Village is officially open

The closest living link to Australian opera icon Dame Nellie Melba has officially opened the Ryman Melbourne retirement village named in her honour.
"It's a wonderful place. It's just the sort of thing Granny Melba would have been thrilled about, and she would have been very pleased to lend her name to.''
Lord Samuel Vestey, Dame Nellie's great grandson, travelled from the UK to Australia to open the Nellie Melba Retirement Village in Wheelers Hill.
Gordon said grand openings were all about saying thank you to the huge team of people who had contributed so much work.
More than 200 residents and guests celebrated the opening of the village, with Lord Vestey joining Ryman Chief Executive Gordon MacLeod to officially hand over the village to its residents. Lord Vestey toured the village and was impressed with what he saw. "I'm only 78 but I'm seriously thinking of moving in here. –
Gordon's biggest vote of thanks went to the residents and their families for putting their faith in Ryman. "This village will be a place of people and a place of compassion. We're determined to create a proud legacy here," Gordon said.

Joan's drive for life She’s five-foot tall, 100 years old, and born to drive. Weary Dunlop resident Joan has been a life-long car enthusiast since she started poking around car engines as a toddler with her father. “I think the first words I could speak were, ‘I want to drive the car’.

According to VicRoads, Joan is one of the oldest active drivers in Melbourne. Their records show that, in a state of more than six million people, only around 60 centenarians hold a valid driver’s licence.
At her 100th birthday celebrations recently, she was asked what she’s been most excited about during her century on earth. It’s clear where her heart still lies.
Joan maintains an active social network of friends, family and neighbours at the village.
“The introduction of automatic transmission in cars.” Of course!
MY Mount Eliza fun run
The event is a fundraiser for Myeloma Australia and was founded by Mt Eliza resident Geoff Nyssen, who was diagnosed with the terminal blood cancer five years ago. This year they aimed to raise $80,000 – enough to fund two Myeloma nurses.
In just three years the MY Mt Eliza Run and Fun Festival held at Mount Eliza Regional Park, has become a favourite fixture on the local events calendar.
“It’s a huge amount to raise on the back of what started off a couple of years ago as a little fun run,” Geoff said. “Myeloma nurses provide great support to people like me, families and carers.” Geoff said the event wouldn’t be possible without the support of sponsors like Ryman Healthcare. “It’s unreal to have Ryman supporting us. They’re a founding community partner. It’s fantastic and hugely appreciated.” Residents and staff from Ryman’s Weary Dunlop and Nellie Melba Retirement Villages were heavily involved on the course, or as volunteers at water stations, food stalls, or presenting medals at the finish line.

Ryman’s Hotel Services Manager Andrew Gibson explained, “The idea was to offer something for residents who do not normally eat with us – independent residents and some serviced apartment residents – in the evening.”
“The beef cheeks were so tasty, the gravy was just as I love it. The meat was so tender it melted in my mouth.”
“The meals are all based on our own Delicious recipes. They have no artificial ingredients and are all made from scratch and then blast

“Sometimes you just can’t be bothered to cook! So to be able to nip down and get one will be really convenient.”
Marion Rogerson Independent resident
Residents can purchase Delicious frozen meals from Nellie Melba’s village café, or the shop at Weary Dunlop.
It was the result of a brainstorming session with Ryman suppliers, with the aim of providing residents with meal options that are both convenient and nutritious. The next step will be to add more meals to the range, including some vegetarian options. From left: Hotel Services Manager Andrew Gibson with Chef Kumar
