Welcome to Lifestyle Ryman villages are where community shapes the heart of your retirement. My favourite thing about my job is the time I get to travel around visiting our Ryman communities. We’ve spent more than 30 years building communities at 34 villages. They’re all unique with their own special character!
I’ve talked to thousands of residents over the years, and there are many reasons why they choose to move in. Security, independence, care and reassurance about the years ahead are familiar themes. But they all have different ideas about what they want to contribute to their new community. Some enjoy the social life whilst others prefer to live quietly in a beautiful new home. Of course, the best way to find out whether our village communities are for you is to experience a Ryman village for yourself. Because when choosing a new home, it’s got to feel right so you can make the choice that is right for you. Best wishes,
It is our residents who transform each village into a community. It's their spirit, the lasting friendships they form, and their relationships with staff that turn what we build into something special.

VILLAGE EVENT
A fun-filled day for everyone Our annual children’s parties are always a big hit in our villages throughout the country, and this year was no exception.
Left: Ben winning best dressed at Charles Upham
Villages were decked out with colourful balloons, bouncy castles towered high in the sky and children and village staff got into the party vibe by dressing up in costume. There were clowns, candy floss, face painting, magicians and yummy food. And there were too many ‘awwww’

moments to count whilst cuddling the baby animals. The many grandparents and great-grandparents at the villages adore the opportunity to host their loved ones at such a fun village event. Needless to say, the children would have slept well that night – we know our staff did! –

RESIDENT PROFILE
Meet Bill and Leone A caring community is one that is there for us not only in the good times, but also in our times of need. That’s the community Bill and Leone found at Jane Mander Retirement Village in Whangarei.
The couple had just moved into the village when their son passed away.

never have done before. I’m really quite proud of him,” she tells us.
“We were devastated of course,” Leone reflects. They were grieving, but in connecting with the village community they found a real source of comfort.
Leone has now taken over the Glee Club, a singing group in the village. It was her way of giving back to the community. “It’s been a great source of comfort and amusement,” she says. “I thoroughly enjoy it.”
Since that caring support Bill and Leone received in their time of need, they are reaching out with that same ‘come and join us’ attitude so that other residents can feel welcomed.
“Well it was just the way we were taken in by them,” Bill explains. “Yes, feeling our grief with us, but not intruding on that,” Leone adds. The support they found was one of genuine caring, but it also provided them the space they needed to grieve. Leone recalls, “One little lady who was almost blind, arrived with the most beautiful lemon
Along with Bill’s monthly quiz, and his new-found enjoyment of bowls, he too has become a regular singer at the Glee Club. “I went down there one day, and now I make more noise than anybody,” he laughs. Seeing Bill thriving in the village community has been wonderful for Leone, “He’s done things here he would

For Bill and Leone, friendship and support are a big part of life. They’ve had some incredible times since moving to the village. They feel fortunate that they made the move at the right time for them and can enjoy the village community. Leone says, “There are no strangers here, just friends we haven’t met. That’s exactly how it goes here. It’s a loving, caring community.”

VILLAGE HAPPENINGS
From retirement villages to playhouses Ryman apprentices complete their task list, whilst creating something special for the local community.

Schoolchildren from Vauxhall School and Stanley Bay School in Devonport were thrilled to receive two beautiful playhouses, crafted by Ryman apprentices. Project Manager Matthew Hutchinson at William Sanders Retirement Village realised their apprentices required weatherboard experience to complete their task list. “Our villages are built using concrete, steel and brick, not weatherboard. So, we asked the community for building ideas that we could help with. –
“The schools said they would love a playhouse and we thought that idea would work perfectly,” he explains. Apprentice Rory Tai said, “It’s really awesome that local kids get to enjoy the playhouses. Now my knowledge in exterior cladding will help me complete my apprenticeship.” Vauxhall School Principal Gary Lawrence was thrilled. “The playhouse is fantastic! The quality is amazing, and the children are very excited," he said.

School friends reunite at Bruce McLaren Margaret was enjoying life in Bruce McLaren Retirement Village when she learned the apartment across the hallway was now occupied. She was delighted to discover that the name on the door was her old school friend Susannah. “I couldn’t even wait, I just banged on the door!” she laughs. Susannah recalls, “I couldn’t see her but when I heard her voice I knew straightaway who it was.” The pair had attended Panmure School together and hadn’t seen each other since a school reunion in 1973!

Having both lost their husbands, Margaret and Susannah now enjoy the support of each other’s company. Susannah explains, “I’ll often go to Margaret’s apartment and we have our little catch-up’s.”
A group of Charles Upham Retirement Village lawn bowls enthusiasts have made the most of a trip across the Tasman making friends and enjoying some Ryman hospitality in Melbourne.
Charles Upham residents enjoy Melbourne bowls challenge
The group of bowlers and supporters from the Canterbury-based village took on some of the best from Australia at Melbourne greens located at the Glen Waverley Bowls Club. Not far from Ryman’s Weary Dunlop and Nellie Melba villages. The bowlers Barbara, Bruce, Alan and Frances, plus supporters Trevor, Anna and Gill flew out on Boxing Day and stayed in Australia until New Year’s Day. Ryman is a major sponsor of the Glen Waverley club and the Christmas bowls carnival. Alan says the team competed on four of the five days in the open competition.

Did you know one in five Ryman Healthcare residents lives in a serviced apartment? It’s easy to see why – you can still enjoy the independence of your own home, just with a little extra help.
The apartment is your home where you’ll enjoy a separate bedroom (some of our villages offer studio apartments), and a private ensuite. Along with help with daily living, you can relish in a Delicious home-cooked main meal, plus morning and afternoon tea. The beauty of a serviced apartment is that we can customise your preferences or needs, right down to the smallest detail. And if your needs change, you can receive resthome-level care in the comfort of your serviced apartment. Plus, Ryman villages provide resthome and, in most villages, hospital and specialist dementia care within the same village community. You are connected to caring and vibrant communities within Ryman villages. Because serviced apartments are located in the heart of our villages, it’s even easier to take advantage of all there is on offer. As well as regular outings in the village van to the shops and further afield. Many residents say that serviced apartment living has taken the stress away. Perhaps it’s peace of mind, knowing that help is close at hand, or the bonds of friendships that are formed within the village community. Whatever the reason, our residents are loving the ‘best of both worlds’ that serviced apartments provide. –

A foodie through and through Chef Kumar Mekala loves bringing an international twist to old favourites for the residents at Ryman’s Bert Sutcliffe Retirement Village in Auckland. The busy chef, who leads an 11-strong team preparing more than 400 meals a day for his residents, received his culinary training in India before moving to New Zealand 19 years ago. He’s a foodie through and through – in his spare time he has his own YouTube show. He loves the chance the team gets to stretch themselves at the village’s popular fine dining evenings, where they cater for village residents who want a full dining experience at the village. “We have quite a lot of freedom in creating the menus. While we’re not competing against five-star restaurants we do similar stuff and that is very gratifying for the team.”
