Welcome to Lifestyle We’re pleased to bring you the latest edition of Lifestyle magazine.

Looking after our older generations is what we do here at Ryman. So, recognising the great lengths that grandparents go to for their loved ones is something we wholeheartedly support. It’s been a busy year in development for Ryman. From adding a little more convenience to a resident’s day with the introduction of our Delicious frozen meals; to implementing our award-winning electronic care app, myRyman. Continuously looking at ways to improve our resident experience certainly keeps us busy.

Our village staff love the opportunity to host a village celebration, and Mother’s Day was no exception. It was a perfect opportunity to welcome families and the wider community into our villages, to join in with the celebrations. I always enjoy seeing the great photos from these events.

I hope you enjoy reading about the lifestyle and events at our Ryman villages. We welcome you to visit us any time, it’d be great to see you. Best wishes,

And the celebrations continued as we once again sponsored the Woman’s Weekly Grandparents of the Year competition.

VILLAGE EVENT

Mother's Day What better way to celebrate Mother’s Day than with an array of decadent treats and splashes of bubbly.

Ryman villages throughout the country held a number of special events to honour the wonderful mothers in our villages. Many villages held sumptuous high teas or special breakfasts, and residents at Possum Bourne village were even treated to a garden party.

Village staff went all out with table displays and decorations, creating some wonderful photo opportunities. Capturing those precious moments between mothers, grandmothers, greatgrandmothers and their grandchildren really is what Mother’s Day is all about.

Grandparents of the year winners Ryman teamed up with New Zealand Woman’s Weekly again this year in sponsoring their Grandparents of the Year competition.

It’s a wonderful opportunity for families to recognise those grandparents that go above and beyond. Often at a time in their lives when they should be slowing down! The competition resonates with us at Ryman, as our villages are home to many amazing grandparents and great-grandparents.

“Through it all Mum and Dad have smiled and never once shown their pain.” Sarah Crawford, Sheryll and Steve's daughter

It was a tough time, but Sarah explains, "Through it all Mum and Dad have smiled and never once shown their pain."

This year we invited the winners into their local Ryman village to treat them to a special high tea and a warm Ryman welcome. Sheryll and Steve Crawford were the deserving winners of the Grandparents of the Year category. In 2015 their daughter Sarah was diagnosed with leukaemia. Without a second thought they uprooted their lives to move from Ohakune to Manawatu, to help look after Sarah and their grandson Cade. Then recently, they moved again! This time to Tauranga, where they could support their eldest daughter Kylie-Maree and their other three grandsons, after the tragic death of their Dad Logan.

Ryman Chief Sales and Marketing Officer, Debbie McClure, was part of the judging panel and said selecting the winners was a tough choice. “I agonised over choosing, but Sheryll and Steve got me with the way they just picked themselves up and moved to where they were needed,” she said. It was a privilege to celebrate with Sheryll and Steve at Julia Wallace Retirement Village in Palmerston North recently. Having never visited a retirement village, the couple were pleasantly surprised by the experience. “It’s beautiful,”

Sheryll said. “It makes me wonder why people say they don’t want to move into a retirement village! You can see these people today – it’s like one big family of its own.”

The Active Grandparent of the Year award went to Barbara Sharp. At 79 years old, Barbara is a Masters Games indoor rowing gold medallist! Which comes in handy when you have grandchildren and great grandchildren to run after! Nominated in secret by her granddaughter Jaymee, Barbara was touched by the award. “It’s so nice to be recognised by my grandchildren, and for them to be proud of me.”

In fact, it wasn’t just the award winners providing us with feedback on our villages. Woman's Weekly Commercial Brand Manager Georgia Bews had some feedback of her own. She told us that her Grandma Claire had been reading all about Ryman villages in Woman’s Weekly, and after visiting Logan Campbell Retirement Village in Auckland, she is now moving into an apartment in a few months. We look forward to welcoming you Claire.

VILLAGE HAPPENINGS

The first residents arrive at William Sanders

The very first residents to move into Ryman’s new William Sanders Retirement Village have arrived and are delighted to be in their new homes.

“I’m pleased I’ve got the view of Auckland city, and I’m going to enjoy watching the village being built from my window, it’s fascinating to watch!”

Judy and Eileen are now neighbours across the hallway from each other in their new independent apartments, and they’ve already discovered they have a mutual friend. Judy was delighted to receive beautiful flowers from Ryman and also Elderly Assist who she had organised to help her with the move. However, she was even more impressed by the view from the balcony.

Eileen arrived with her daughter, son-in-law and niece in tow to lend a hand. As soon as she opened the door to her apartment she ran straight to the balcony to check out the view from her new living room. With views of Rangitoto Island, Mt Victoria and the Ngataringa wetlands, Eileen is pretty happy. “Ohh this is what I’m most excited about seeing,” she said. “It’s lovely!”

Join the electric car revolution Last year Ryman signed up to the CEMARS carbon reduction scheme. Some of the measures planned to reduce our carbon footprint, are switching to an electric fleet of vehicles and installing a fast-charge network at five Ryman villages in Auckland. The chargers will be available to residents and their families, as well as staff and members of the public visiting the villages. Chief Executive Gordon MacLeod explained, “We want to make sure we're adapting to use any new technology that's available to reduce our carbon footprint. We'll trial the network at five of our Auckland villages before considering

a further roll out to the rest of our villages in New Zealand and in Australia.” Ryman is also switching its fleet from hybrid vehicles to electric Hyundai Kona cars, and will trial car ride and sharing schemes for residents.

As the first woman to be inducted in the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame, Linda is a true Kiwi icon. She now joins a long list of great New Zealanders whose names have been lent to Ryman retirement villages. Chief Executive Gordon MacLeod explained, "When it came to finding a name for our River Road site we turned to locals for inspiration and Linda was a popular suggestion. "Linda is New Zealand's most famous female jockey, whose career was forged in the Waikato, so I can't think of a more fitting namesake for our beautiful new village in Hamilton,” Gordon said. Linda travelled from her home in Queensland to be at the naming ceremony, and said she was delighted to lend her name to the new village in an area that was dear to her heart. Clifford and Jillian were the first residents to move into the village in May. They were beaming as they cut the ribbon on their brand-new townhouse.

RYMAN DELICIOUS

Ready to eat, and simply Delicious Ryman residents craving a nutritious meal that’s packed with flavour, and is quick and easy to prepare, can now find the perfect option right there in their village.

We’ve chosen four resident favourites from our Delicious menus, plus a new choice, and taken them to the next level with convenience. We now offer beef cheeks, tarragon chicken, macaroni cheese, cottage pie, and our new mouth-watering lamb shank, as individually frozen meal options. Like our Delicious recipes, our frozen meals are made from scratch using fresh, natural ingredients. Andrew Gibson, Ryman’s Hotel Services Manager explained, “The idea was to offer something for residents who do not

normally eat with us – independent residents and some serviced apartment residents – in the evening.” He says part of Ryman’s challenge was finding the right manufacturing partner. Frozen Fresh – a specialty foods manufacturer based in Tauranga – fitted the bill. Mike Nixon, General Manager and a Director of Frozen Fresh, says his family-owned business has put a lot of effort into recreating the Ryman Delicious meals. “We make everything from scratch, in small batches, in our commercial kitchen. We cook

and steam the vegetables ourselves, and the potatoes are real Agria potatoes, with butter and cream,” Mike explains.

“The beef cheeks were so tasty, the gravy was just as I love it. The meat was so tender it melted in my mouth.” Barbara Reynen-Rose Ryman Chief Operations Officer

“Sometimes you just can’t be bothered to cook! So to be able to nip down and get one will be really convenient.”

Macaroni cheese and cottage pie come as smaller meal options at $6.50 each. While beef cheeks, tarragon chicken and the lamb shank are large meal options at $12 each. Or you can save with bundle packs of three.

Residents can purchase Delicious frozen meals from their village reception, shop, or café.

Andrew and his team worked on the initiative over the last 12 months. It was the result of a brainstorming session, with the aim of providing residents with meal options that are both convenient and nutritious. The launch of the frozen meal range was held at Bert Sutcliffe Retirement

Celebrating Yvette Williams

Above: Yvette practising the hitch-kick by jumping off a sand dune at St Clair beach in Dunedin. Her coach Jim Bellwood is in the foreground.

In new Ryman villages, a lot of thought and research goes into finding the perfect village namesake. A name that not only represents a true Kiwi icon, but also pays homage to the surrounding village community.

When we caught up with Yvette in January, she recalled those glory days more than 60 years ago, where she made sporting history as the country’s first female to beat the best in the world in the 1952 Helsinki Games.

As the first New Zealand woman to win an Olympic gold medal, Yvette Williams was the perfect choice for our village in Roslyn, Dunedin that opened in 2011.

Yvette was a naturally gifted athlete who excelled at long jump, as well as discus, shot put and javelin.

In January, we presented Yvette with a famous picture of her leaping off the sand dunes at St Clair beach in the 1950s. You can see her coach Jim Bellwood in the foreground. Sadly, in April, Yvette passed away just shy of her 90th birthday. Her brother Roy told us she’d just found out she was due to be made a Dame in the Queen's Birthday Honours. –

Jim Bellwood put the secret of Yvette’s success down to her commitment to training hard, natural ability and her “magnificent competitive temperament.” Asked what made her tick when she competed, she chuckled. “I just always wanted to win. That’s it really. I mean, why wouldn’t I?”

RYMAN ACCOLADES

We like to go the extra mile At Ryman villages, we choose to go beyond what’s expected because we want our residents to live life to the full. To be recognised for going that extra mile, well that’s pretty special to us, as it means we’re doing our best for the people that matter most – our residents.

Eldercare Innovation Award – myRyman

Most Trusted Brand

Ryman care plans come to life through our own custom-made electronic care app, myRyman. Located in every care room, a device enables nurses and carers to record daily care tasks for each resident. Using myRyman creates links and prompts, so our nursing and caregiving teams know exactly what they need to do. Everything is securely recorded. Our teams can access and update clinical data more efficiently and spend more time with residents as a result.

Ryman Healthcare has been named the most trusted brand in the retirement industry for the fifth time. We've taken the top award in the aged care and retirement village category in the Reader's Digest 2019 Most Trusted Brands awards. Ryman also won in 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2018. The aim of the awards is to identify the names Kiwis recognise and trust the most. The winners are chosen from a survey of 1,500 New Zealanders across 65 categories.

In 2019, myRyman was named Innovation of the Year – Care Model at the Asia Pacific Eldercare Innovation Awards in Singapore. The award recognises the best care model that improves the quality of life for older people.

Winning the Most Trusted Brand for the fifth time is an achievement that everyone at Ryman is proud of. Chief Executive Gordon MacLeod says, "We've spent a lot of time building trust and it is something we never take for granted. There’s nothing more important than trust.”

“The myRyman app has been invaluable for Ryman in improving residents' lives.”

Reader's Digest Director Sheron White said winners were brands that were genuine, authentic, reliable and consistent – and only the best brands can manage this.
