Ryman Times - Brandon Park Edition

A note from Dale and Michelle Hello and welcome to the new edition of Ryman Times. We had a fantastic break over the Christmas period and are well rested. Since we have come back we have been extremely busy. Many people have secured the apartment of their choice and we only have four apartments left in stage one! Recently, we have held some great events and had an open weekend at Weary Dunlop, which attracted over 170 people. The construction is going up very quickly and soon to be residents are pin pointing where their apartments will be. All very exciting! Most residents have already chosen their carpets and curtains for their apartments.

We held a Christmas party in December at the Mount Waverley Bowling Club. The residents got to meet their neighbours and the event was a huge success. Our show apartment has just been outfitted with new furniture and it looks beautiful. We are open seven days a week and you are welcome to come for a chat and a coffee and view the show apartment at 6 Brandon Park Drive. Kind regards,

Cashin Scholarship Winner 2018 Emma Glasson is all set to pursue her dream career after winning the $5,000 Cashin Scholarship. The 18-year-old from Invercargill has started her first year studying for a Bachelor of Commerce and she says the scholarship has eased the pressure on her family. Emma’s mum Deanna is a senior caregiver at Rowena Jackson Retirement Village in Invercargill and started there in 2012 after the family moved south from Christchurch. Emma says the earthquakes were tough on the family. “The earthquakes took a toll on us all and mum and dad decided that Invercargill would be a good place to move to.’’ Emma is the seventh winner of the scholarship established in honour of

Ryman director Mike Cashin. Blair Cashin, Mike’s son, said Emma was a deserving winner. “We were delighted to support Emma’s ambitions to study accountancy. She’s part of a family whose lives were disrupted by the earthquakes but she is a determined character who has done well at school through her hard work.’’ The scholarship is open to all Ryman staff and their families.

Dame Nellie – an Australian icon The spontaneous gasps of delight when the curtain was pulled back said it all: Dame Nellie Melba was an overwhelmingly popular choice for our new village. More than 220 people packed into the Mulgrave Country Club to see which Australian’s name would grace the village, currently under construction on Collegium Ave. Dame Nellie (1861-1931) was Australia’s first international opera star who became an icon at home for her extraordinary singing talent as well as her contribution to good causes. Born Helen Porter Mitchell, she adopted the pseudonym Melba to honour Melbourne, her home town. Dame Nellie studied music in Melbourne before leaving for Europe and studying music in Paris and Brussels. Her career took off when she moved to London and established herself as a leading soprano at Covent Garden before landing roles at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Dame Nellie used her fame to work tirelessly to raise funds for charity during

Opera Singer Cleo Lee-McGowan and Pianist Adam McMillan

World War 1 and after the war dedicated herself to teaching the next generation of performers. She continued to perform throughout her life and her contribution to Australia was recognised when she was chosen to feature on the $100 note. Guests at the naming event enjoyed a breath-taking performance by Melba Opera Trust scholar Cleo Lee-McGowan before being treated to generous servings of eponymous Australian favourites Melba Toast and Peach Melbas. Dame Nellie is our third opera star – following on from Ryman villages named after Dame Malvina Major and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa.

Construction Update The earth has been dug, the foundations laid, and our new Brandon Park village is now beginning to reach for the sky. The new year has seen construction at the site hit top gear, with the first completed apartments on track to be completed in July. Anyone passing by the site, on the corner of Brandon Park Drive and Collegium Ave, can’t help but notice the dramatic change since Christmas. Standing between the village’s newlysprouted two main buildings, with a recently-arrived second crane towering behind him, project manager Travis Cocks is pleased with progress. “We’re going really well. Each area is going up a level every two to two and half weeks.”

There are now almost 150 workers on site, up from around 110 in December. Internal wall framings have been installed in the independent living apartment building, which has allowed the interior fit out of the apartments to begin. Joinery, including kitchens for each apartment, arrived in late February. The arrival of a second crawler crane at the beginning of February – one for each of the village’s two main buildings – has seen the pace of construction ramp up. But that doesn’t mean anything is being done with undue haste, Travis said. “We’re pushing a big emphasis on safety, which the guys have been really receptive to. We’re a safe site anyway, but there’s always something you can improve on.”

Ryman Times - Brandon Park Edition

Introducing Robert Robert Taylor has worked in sales for five of Australia’s biggest retirement village operators, and when he first heard about what Ryman Healthcare offered residents he was sceptical. “I was looking for the catch. Something hidden. Some ingenious buried contractual clause. A caveat.” “Well, as hard and as deep as I looked, I just couldn’t find one with Ryman.” Now, as Ryman’s new regional sales and community relations manager for Victoria, Robert’s journey from sceptic to dedicated disciple is complete. “Ryman is actually different, it didn’t just talk the talk; Ryman walks the walk.” Born and raised in the Melbourne, Robert’s journey towards the industry he has spent most of his life in, began at home, rooted in a family culture of respect and compassion for those in need. “In many cultures, parents and the elderly are revered and celebrated and from my experience, the stories that emanate from such amazing life experience are enriching to listen to and often truly remarkable. “As a result, I guess I was drawn to help people that deserve respect and our thanks for some of the remarkable achievements in times some of us can’t even imagine.”

Robert says the key to selling retirement living options is listening. Trust must be at the heart of that partnership, and that takes time and a genuine dedication to achieving the best result for each person. It's a big job, but with a genuinely different product to sell, he too is ready to walk the Ryman walk. Debbie McClure Group sales and community relations manager

Ryman And Gig On The Green Form Pitch-Perfect Duet Hundreds of people turned out for Mt Eliza’s Gig on the Green, sponsored by Ryman for the first time. The annual event, held on February 3, is run by the Mt Eliza Chamber of Commerce. With Ryman’s proposed plans to build a beach front village in Mt Eliza, it was the perfect opportunity to introduce Ryman to the local community. Ryman’s Victoria regional sales & community relations manager, Robert Taylor, and community relations team leader, Denise Thompson, joined the revellers to soak up the sounds, sun and food. “Sitting down to great food and sparkling wine topped off such a great day as people enjoying the festivities mingled out

into the street and beyond,” Robert said. “Mt Eliza has something for everyone and it makes a lot of sense for Ryman to support such an inclusive event which solidifies the growing Ryman relationship with the local community.”

“This was the one place where we have “ always been welcomed," Alan says. a “We always get treated to a few scones “ and a cream, it really is just like a resort!”

at P d n A n la A t Mee Retiring to live in a Ryman village is a dream come true for Glen Waverley couple Alan and Pat Lilleyman. “I used to say when I retire I’d like to retire in a hotel. Well, now I have got my five-star resort,” says Pat. The couple says they loved everything about what was on offer after visiting Weary Dunlop retirement village. “We were one of the first to have a look around there,” says Alan. “And we would have gone there but we just couldn’t get in – we were too slow! “But Brandon Park is going to be bigger and better and closer to the facilities, which is more convenient for us.” They say Ryman Healthcare is in a league of its own.

Their four children have given the move T their th seal of approval too. “They think it’s fantastic,” says Pat. “ “We took our daughter and showed “ her h Weary Dunlop and she thought it was beautiful.” Having lived in their home for 40 years, former nurse Pat and Alan, a former motor mechanic who went on to work in the civil engineering department of Melbourne University, are ready for a change. Pat’s gardening hobby and Alan’s love of restoring old cars (including his prized Ford Mustang) are beginning to move into the ‘too hard basket’. Alan is a member of the RSL and Pat runs indoor bowling there as well as being involved in the Women’s Auxiliary and the garden club too. The couple have chosen an apartment and say there is a family connection to the site which makes the move kind of special. “It used to be the site of the Brandon Park Technical College and our kids went to school there,” says Alan.
