Greetings from Jodie... Hello and welcome to the Christmas edition of Princess Alexandra Post. Another year has flown by and what a great year it has been. We had a lot of fun in all our activities and grew closer as a community. The highlight for me was seeing the village decorated romantically when we celebrated Romeo & Juliet. We held our market day in October, and I want to thank everyone who took the time to help or provide us with products to sell. We raised $3,600 for Alzheimers NZ, which is an amazing result. The warmer weather heralds the coming of the festive season and our activities
team is hard at work getting ready for all our Christmas related events. We are looking forward to the Christmas Happy Hour and the Christmas Carols! I wish you a happy Christmas and prosperous New Year! Kind regards,
Jodie Robb Village Manager
Romeo & Juliet For the Royal New Zealand Ballet and Ryman Healthcare season of Romeo & Juliet, our residents loved decorating the village romantically to celebrate the greatest love story. We also held a colouring competition and finally we celebrated with our very own masquerade ball. What fun that was as everyone dressed in their finest costumes and masks and the dance floor was never empty. What a great tribute to Romeo & Juliet!

Charity partner announced In June, Alzheimer’s NZ was announced as Ryman’s charity partner for the year. Ngaire Dixon, chair of Alzheimer’s New Zealand, was delighted with the announcement as dementia and Alzheimers will become more of an issue in the future. There were more than 62,000 New Zealanders with dementia
in 2016, and the this is forecast to grow to 170,212 people by 2050. Ryman villages include 710 dementia beds and demand for care is growing. Every dollar raised for Alzheimer’s New Zealand at our villages this year will be matched dollar for dollar by Ryman Healthcare.

Summer menu launched! Our Delicious menus have taken our villages by storm since the launch in February this year. The much-anticipated summer menus combine age-old favourites along with a few new additions, such as the inclusion of couscous. Hospitality manager Andrew Gibson said that the team concentrated on refining the menus for this edition.
“We’re building on the success of our previous menus by refining the recipes. We know what works now and we’ll build from there. But we also included a few new dishes.” Among these new dishes are chefs Paul Kuronic and Steve Iraia’s crab cake dishes. Paul and Steve both won silver at the New Zealand Hospitality Championships earlier this year, and residents will now get a taste of their creations.
MARKET DAY We had a spectacular day at our Market Day to support Alzheimers NZ. We had some amazing stalls, which ranged from sweets, savouries, arts and crafts, jewellery, candles, needlework and flowers. At the end of the day we had collected more than $3,600! A very big thank you to everyone who supported this great cause!
And the best new dish on the menu? “Definitely the brisket!” Andrew enthused. The summer menus was rolled out in October.

Fozia Tasheem has no doubt that winning the first Cashin Scholarship changed the course of her life.
The 2018 Cashin Scholarship is now open. Ryman staff and family members undertaking tertiary study in 2018 can apply.
Fozia was studying accounting and information systems at Victoria University and funding her studies was a struggle.
For more details contact David King at: david.king@rymanhealthcare.com
Fozia’s mum, Hushn Bano, was working at Malvina Major as a housekeeper, and Fozia took a part time job there. “I did everything I could at the village to get extra shifts.’’ In 2011, she applied for the first Cashin Scholarship and it could not have come at a better time. Now 25, Fozia has just been promoted to a co-ordinator’s role at Datacom in Wellington, so her career is on the up.

Everything was put together and we then displayed it. On Halloween, the residents also got a treat out of the witches’ cauldron!
Christmas craft
Hello! My name is Jack Spurr and I moved into the resthome at Princess Alexandra in June 2016. I was born in Yorkshire, England and I am one of six children. My parents also took in two other children who were orphaned so they didn’t have to go to the workhouse. My dad was a miner, who fought in World War II and was a prisoner of war in Germany. I remember riding a tandem bike with my dad, he would stop peddling so I had to do all the work! I loved playing soccer and my first proper job was working at the Empire Theatre,
There was a health drink factory across from my house where I saw a girl who worked there. I would wait outside my house each day to see if she would notice me. My mum noticed my behaviour and said that I would probably marry her, which is exactly what I did. Ruth and I were engaged for four years and were married after the war. We have a son and daughter. We celebrated 66 years together! We lived in various places in the world, including Melbourne, Maryborough, Salisbury and Wairoa where I had ¼ acre to grow fruit and vegetables. We moved to Princes Alexandra to be closer to our daughter and grandchildren. At the village, I enjoy the company of my fellow residents, I love to sing, enjoy music, going to the Men’s Club, and all the other activities! Pictured top left: Jack Spurr (middle) with his daughter June Mayhead and her husband Maurice Mayhead on his 95th birthday.
What’s in the bag? Recently we had great fun with the ‘It’s in the Bag’ game show. The residents loved the nostalgia of the radio and TV show. ‘It’s in the Bag’ aired on radio in 1954 and in 1970 a television version was aired. The show was eventually discontinued in 1990. Our host for the evening was Selwyn TooBad (instead of the real host Toogood!) and was our very own activities coordinator Hayley Berriman in disguise. Everyone had the opportunity to take part and the residents loved the nostalgia and
