State of Grace

Greetings from Murray... Hello and welcome to the Christmas edition of State of Grace. If you have not yet met me, I am the new village manager for Grace Joel. I am from Auckland and worked overseas in Malaysia and Qatar for 14 years. I am married to my lovely wife, Marjorie, and we have two daughters. I want to thank all of you for making me feel so welcome and I look forward to getting to know you all in the coming months. The village has been incredibly busy over winter as we celebrated midwinter solstice, International Month, and especially the Romeo & Juliet season. Also a big thank you to Peter Lester, our guest speaker at our Father’s Day breakfast for a

very interesting insight into the Emirate Team NZ’s victory at the America’s Cup. Over the next few months we have a great line-up of events which will take us through to the silly season. Please keep an eye on your calendars.

We at Grace Joel celebrated the Royal New Zealand Ballet and Ryman Healthcare’s season of Romeo & Juliet with many activities. We were also entertained by the local ballet troop. It was lovely to see the dancers perform.

I wish you and your families all the joys of the coming festive season. Stay safe. Kind regards,

Murray Parkes Village Manager

Ngaire Dixon, chair of Alzheimer’s New Zealand, was delighted with the announcement as dementia and Alzheimers will become more of an issue in the future. Summer menu launched! Our Delicious menus have taken our villages by storm since the launch in February this year. The much-anticipated summer menus will combine age-old favourites along with a few new additions, such as the inclusion of couscous. Hospitality manager Andrew Gibson said that the team concentrated on refining the menus for this edition.

“We’re building on the success of our previous menus by refining the recipes. We know what works now and we’ll build from there. But we also included a few new dishes.”

Charlotte’s menagerie During August, our residents delighted at having Charlotte and her wagon full of furry friends back at the village. We snuggled with Pickles the piglet, a few kits (baby bunnies), guinea pigs and Winter the bird! We look forward to Charlotte’s next visit!

Among these new dishes are chefs Paul Kuronic and Steve Iraia’s crab cake dishes. Paul and Steve both won silver at the New Zealand Hospitality Championships earlier this year, and residents will now get a taste of their creations. And the best new dish on the menu? “Definitely the brisket!” Andrew enthused. The summer menus will be rolled out in October.

Cashin Scholarship open for entries Fozia Tasheem has no doubt that winning the first Cashin Scholarship changed the course of her life. Fozia was studying accounting and information systems at Victoria University and funding her studies was a struggle. Fozia’s mum, Hushn Bano, was working at Malvina Major as a housekeeper, and Fozia took a part time job there. “I did everything I could at the village to get extra shifts.’’ In 2011, she applied for the first Cashin Scholarship and it could not have come at a better time. Now 25, Fozia has just been promoted to a co-ordinator’s role at Datacom in Wellington, so her career is on the up.

The 2018 Cashin Scholarship is now open. Ryman staff and family members undertaking tertiary study in 2018 can apply. Entries close November 24. For more details contact David King at: david.king@rymanhealthcare.com

Introducing Carroll Meet Paratene (Carroll) King, who is our new second chef in our kitchen team. Paratene or Carroll as he is known around the village, hails from the coastal town of Wairoa. He is the youngest of five children and also the only boy. Carroll’s iwi is the Rongomaiwahine iwi, based in Mahia, his river is the Wairoa River and his mountain the Maungaroa. Carroll attended local schools in the East Coast before heading north to complete his marketing degree at Waikato University. While working as a student for Hamilton caterers he found his passion for food. After completing his degree, Carroll worked for Hamilton Caterers full time. He then relocated to the Bay of Plenty

to run a satellite branch of the business. Carroll went on to work for himself in a few ventures, before starting with us at Grace Joel. Carroll also worked for the production company South Pacific Pictures catering to their crews. In his free time, Carroll loves to fish, play golf and go cycling. However, he is best known for being a regular attendee at pub quizzes. We look forward to Carroll taking over as quiz master! We are very fortunate to have Carroll as a member of the Grace Joel team.

After four years in a rented cottage in Remuera, we built our first home in Long Drive. We stayed for 38 years raising our three children. Our family then moved to Tuhimata Street where we lived for 18 years. We also have five lovely grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Hello, our names are Brian and Jenny Rowe.

Brian always knew he could draw but only took up the hobby seriously when he wanted to record the old houses of Ponsonby before they were pulled down. Brian then progressed to using different media and styles of painting. He exhibited his work three times, twice in Auckland and once in Arrowtown.

We decided to move to Grace Joel just two months ago and we didn’t have to move far as we lived two blocks down the hill on St Heliers Bay Road near the Anglican Church.

Jenny worked for a short time in a studio, prior to giving birth to her children. When the children were older, Jenny started voluntary social work, working in education for 13 years.

The move was fantastic for us, as it meant that we could stay in the same community and it made it an easy transition.

Jenny’s family had a holiday home in the Queenstown area, which meant that we could visit and Jenny never lost her southern connections. For over 30 years we spent two to three months of every year down south.

Brian is a true-blue Aucklander and worked for most of his live as a Civil Engineer. Jenny grew up in the deep south city of Invercargill. She attended boarding school in Christchurch and then later the School of Art at the University of Canterbury. Jenny majored in design and jewellery. Jenny moved to Auckland to

Health issues reared its head for us early this year, which lead to our decision to look at moving to Grace Joel. We are so happy to find ourselves in this very pleasant place being well cared for.

A special surprise During June, Arthur Keane and some of our residents surprised everyone with a fantastic little dance routine. The group, some with cowboy hats and checked shirts, performed a line dancing routine that delighted their audience. They even had a Kiwi twist with some poi thrown in as well!

Visit to Marine Rescue Centre Some of our residents visited the Marine Rescue Centre in downtown Auckland, the home of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and the Coastguard. They were treated to a tour of the facility and a talk by members of the rescue helicopter team. While there, the residents got the chance to see the team in action as there was a callout!
