Wilding’s Rallies

Wilding’s Rallies

Greetings from Sharon... Hello and welcome to the Christmas edition of Wilding’s Rallies. It has been such a joy to see the gardens break out in full colour, with tulips, daffodils, camellias and rhododendrons popping up. Our village has been very busy hosting many cultural groups and we also had a lot of fun with our activities. The HDANZ Audit Team also visited the village. Our team did a wonderful job with the various activities during the last few months, including the Romeo & Juliet pantomime, which was a great hit with our residents. The music buffs among us were treated to a fantastic performance by Carl Doy, and

the sports enthusiasts were entertained by our bowls team playing against some of the local clubs for the trophy. Our activities team are busy planning all our festive activities, and we are looking forward to the many Christmas lunches and celebrations. Please keep an eye on your calendars. From the whole team here, we wish you a happy, safe and a Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year! Kind regards, g ,

Charity partner announced In June, Alzheimer’s NZ was announced as Ryman’s charity partner for the year. Ngaire Dixon, chair of Alzheimer’s New Zealand, was delighted with the announcement as dementia and Alzheimers will become more of an issue in the future. There were more than 62,000 New Zealanders with dementia

in 2016, and the this is forecast to grow to 170,212 people by 2050. Ryman villages include 710 dementia beds and demand for care is growing. Every dollar raised for Alzheimer’s New Zealand at our villages this year will be matched dollar for dollar by Ryman Healthcare.

Romeo & Juliet We celebrated the Royal New Zealand Ballet and Ryman Healthcare season of Romeo & Juliet with a rather unique pantomime. The activities team, consisting of Julie Barnes, Grace Nathan, Donna Bradford, Lin Smith, Pieta Valentine and Robert Craddock, graced the ‘stage’ (atrium stairs and floor) in colourful and unique costumes and presented their version of the classic tale with flare.

The calm before the storm; our cast getting ready

The show featured a short but handsome Romeo and an unconventional Juliet but managed to make the audience laugh and clap in delight. The residents loved the show and we are sure that we will see this wonderful team in action again.

Summer menu launched! Our Delicious menus have taken our villages by storm since the launch in February this year. The much-anticipated summer menus combine age-old favourites along with a few new additions, such as the inclusion of couscous. Hospitality manager Andrew Gibson said that the team concentrated on refining the menus for this edition.

On the green

“We’re building on the success of our previous menus by refining the recipes. We know what works now and we’ll build from there. But we also included a few new dishes.”

With the warmer days upon us at last, the Anthony Wilding lawn bowlers were back in action on our lovely green. Many residents play more than once a week, and our residents had great fun at the annual tournament in mid-November.

Among these new dishes are chefs Paul Kuronic and Steve Iraia’s crab cake dishes. Paul and Steve both won silver at the New Zealand Hospitality Championships earlier this year, and residents will now get a taste of their creations.

If you want to play with us you are welcome to join anytime!

And the best new dish on the menu? “Definitely the brisket!” Andrew enthused. The summer menus were rolled out in October.

Wellness Day Recently we celebrated Wellness Day at the village. The serviced apartment residents were treated to a foot massage, healthy treats and a fruit smoothie. Clinical manager, Jeannie also shared the importance of healthy eating, exercising and Triple A.

We hope everyone enjoyed our Wellness Day, and we definitely look forward to holding another one soon.

In the resthome and special care unit our management team joined in the Triple A classes. Residents were also treated to a massage, fruit kebabs and smoothies.

Cashin Scholarship open for entries Fozia Tasheem has no doubt that winning the first Cashin Scholarship changed the course of her life.

The 2018 Cashin Scholarship is now open. Ryman staff and family members undertaking tertiary study in 2018 can apply.

Fozia was studying accounting and information systems at Victoria University and funding her studies was a struggle.

For more details contact David King at: david.king@rymanhealthcare.com

Fozia’s mum, Hushn Bano, was working at Malvina Major as a housekeeper, and Fozia took a part time job there.

Staff members Beth Capistrano and Diane Brown indulged our residents with a lovely lower leg massage which they would now like to be offered on a monthly basis!

“I did everything I could at the village to get extra shifts.’’ In 2011, she applied for the first Cashin Scholarship and it could not have come at a better time. Now 25, Fozia has just been promoted to a co-ordinator’s role at Datacom in Wellington, so her career is on the up.

Introducing Nicky Rendell Hello, my name is Nicky Rendell and I am the assistant to the manager here at Anthony Wilding. I joined the team in August and every day since I have thoroughly enjoyed coming to work. At home, I am mum to two lovely children – if you can call them children as they are 16 and 22 years old. I have been blessed that they are two wonderful individuals and both far taller than me! Hard to believe it. We also have a 10-year-old Labrador called Max. In my spare time, I like to go tramping – mostly the tracks in the South Island so far. I have had great adventures up in the

mountains and may one day make a movie about these adventures! One of my hobbies is knitting and I am hopeful that the village Knit & b Natter group will acceptt me as a member. I would also like to take up kayaking so that’s next on my list to learn. Lastly, I would like to thank everyone for the warm welcome I received. My door is always open, and I do love it when residents and staff stop by and have a chat with me. So, feel free to do that!

ler w o F n le e H Meet Anthony Wilding’s Helen Fowler brightens up all of our lives. She’s a little ray of sunshine, and everybody in the village seems to know her! Helen is known as one of “the originals”, having arrived at Anthony Wilding back in 2007 around the time of opening, with her lovely husband Ray. Ray and Helen celebrated 50 wonderful years of marriage,

Sadly Ray passed away here but Helen’s only daughter Debbie continues to be a big part of her life. Debbie has lived overseas for years in Manila and now in Amsterdam. With a daughter so far away, Helen has gone overseas five times to visit her and has seen many amazing places. Helen loves life here at Anthony Wilding. She is a volunteer who assists with Housie in the Wimbledon wing of our hospital. She works in our shop, and takes charge of the roster and ordering of stock there. Helen is also a chief knitter in our Knit & Natter group. As a chief knitter, she organises knitting to be donated to the Red Cross, which is then handed to the those in need at low decile schools in Christchurch. Helen turns 90 in November, and will celebrate with her daughter and friends at a party at Riccarton House. Thank you, Helen, for all that you do, and for the wonderful person that you are. We absolutely love having you at Anthony Wilding.

About the men Once a fortnight we hold a Men’s club for resthome and hospital residents. The men get together to share their stories, life experiences, hobbies, achievements and spend an afternoon enjoying each other’s company. This month the men had the opportunity to put together windmills with the help of the maintenance staff. The end result is fantastic!
