MOTORCYCLE OILS WHY MOTORCYCLE OILS ARE SPECIFIC Motorcycle oils differ from that of passenger cars in many ways and are generally quite specific in terms of use or application. When both motorcycle and automobile engines are compared, piece by piece, a good picture of the differences can be seen as each engine is faced with lubrication challenges. The properties that could be considered as major differences between motorcycles and passenger cars are listed below. These take into account the design factor which affects the lubrication requirements at the least.

THE MOST IMPORTANT LUBRICANT SPECIFICATIONS API The American Petroleum Institute (API) is the only national trade association that represents all aspects of America’s oil and natural gas industry. Amongst all the activities of the API, one of them is to define lubricant specifications. A distinction can be made between 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines. 2-STROKE ENGINES
The different specifications from the API are TA, TB, TC and TD. TC, designed initially for engines between 200 and 500cc are the only current specifications. The others are considered obsolete by API, even if they are still in use. 4-STROKE ENGINES
The API does not have a specific 4T motorcycle engine oil specification. API SG is probably the most commonly used engine oil service category for motorcycles even though this designation has long been obsolete. This is because there is a perception that API SG oils have better anti-wear protection because of its ZDDP content. See graph below for performance benchmarks. API

JASO The Japanese Automobile Standards Organization (JASO) has made different specifications for 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines, mainly to address the extra requirements needed by motorcycles. 2-STROKE SPECIFICATIONS
Japeneese motorcycle manufacturers found the limits demanded by the API TC specifications too loose. Oils meeting the API TC standard still produced excessive smoke and could not prevent exhaust blocking. Therefore the JASO introduced the following specifications: JASO FA
This is the lowest 2 stroke oil spec that tests lubricating capability, detergents, initial torque and exhaust smoke.
12 | MOTORCYCLE | Rymax Lubricants
2017
JASO FB
This spec tests the same things as JASO FA but is a slightly higher standard. JASO FC
This spec has the same level of tests as JASO-FB for lubricating capability and initial torque. But it has much higher standards for detergents and exhaust smoke. JASO FD
This spec is almost the same as the JASO-FC spec but with much higher detergent capabilities. 4-STROKE SPECIFICATIONS
Modern passenger car engine oils contain more and more friction modifiers. While this is the good thing for those segments (reduces wear and fuel consumption) it’s bad for the motorcycles. At least for those motorcycles which use engine oil to lubricate their transmission and wet clutch. JASO introduced the MA and MB specification to distinguish between friction modified and non friction modified engine oils. Most four-stroke motorcycles with wet clutches need a JASO MA oil. JASO MA
This was the standard for single unit engines where the wet clutch, gearbox and engine used the same oil. JASO-MA oils don’t contain friction modifiers. JASO MB
This lower standard was for bikes that use separate oils for the engine, clutch and gearbox (e.g Harley Davidson’s and BMW’s). JASO-MA2
This specification was introduced in 2006 for modern motorcycle engines. As well as being a higher standard of oil the JASO-MA2 approval means the oil is suitable for use in bikes with catalytic converts in the exhaust system.

which gives optimal performance and stability for daily use and for use in extreme conditions. These oils have a high thermal and oxidation stability and can be applied in a very wide temperature range.
SPRAY CANS
With spray cans, the working material (the lubricant) is heavily diluted in propellant and solvents which is beneficial to the application. For example, with Chain Lube spray, the thin viscosity of the solvents and propellants typically result in a better penetrating fluid, allowing the lubricant to migrate into the tight tolerances of the chain contact points, to create a fluid film barrier that reduces wear and displaces water instead of trapping it.
