Karsten Winther, the President for EMEA at Vertiv, speaks about his key priorities for the EMEA market, after taking on the role of President for the region
As you settle into your new role as the President for EMEA, what are your key priorities for the market?
The emphasis on our people remains a top priority for me. It’s vital that we con tinue to retain and attract the right tal
ent that will inevitably bring new ways of thinking and innovating, which is crucial to grow our leadership position in the industry. Another priority, and a key element of success for us, is ensuring that we are doing our utmost to increase
customer satisfaction. To enable this, we must constantly enhance processes and manufacturing, which in turn will lead to delivery optimisation.
With our recent acquisition of the E+I
Engineering Group, we have a new op portunity to better support our custom ers with access to a broader portfolio of products. Since one of the E+I factories is located in Ras Al Khaimah in the UAE, the acquisition will allow us to realise our ambition of increasingly supplying quickly deployed prefabricated modular solutions to the region, from the region.
Which Vertiv technologies and solutions are you most excited about and why?
The market continues to show real de mand for technologies and solutions that support sustainability initiatives. With the hunger for data constantly increasing, it is vital that data centre providers invest in solutions that reduce energy usage, waste and overall carbon footprint. I’m excited about the technologies that offer oppor tunities on this front, including adiabatic chilled water systems, liquid/immersion cooling systems, and solutions for grid support and stabilisation.
It is also important that we supply existing sites with new technologies, facilitating a transition away from outdated legacy in frastructure currently in operation to more sustainable and less power-intensive al ternatives. I’m also particularly interested in micro data centres that are becoming an attractive option for companies that want to improve their agility and simplify workloads. With edge computing becom ing a more vital area of investment, there is a clear industry ambition to move data and processing power closer to where it is being used.
As we move further into a hyper-connected world with smart cities becoming a reality, what’s next for Edge?
Installing micro data centres closer to end us ers will be the backbone of smart cities. The topic of smart cities encompasses such a wide array of activations, from autonomous vehicles and smart hospitals to traffic control and the internet of things. All of these demand power and a constant flow and interpretation of data. Investment continues to be focused at the Edge and the most effective way to move everything closer to its utilisation point to reduce latency – critical when this data is responsible for the flow of an entire city.
The evolution of the metaverse and its potential to revolutionise retail, entertainment, healthcare, education and
other lifestyle activities also presents an interesting opportunity. At present, most companies remain tentative and are de ploying bandwidth to figure out what the metaverse will really mean for them, but if it does deliver upon its potential, then we can expect the metaverse to be the next big thing for digitalisation and customer experience.
Similarly, with the continued explosion of devices and data, how will this impact the cloud and colo markets over the next 12 – 18 months?
We continue to see more and more de vices coming online, and subsequently, the resulting need for data continues to expand. There will be an ongoing demand for high-capacity data centres which are well connected with the edge of the net work and closer to end users. The biggest challenge with this is integrating technolo gy that can interpret which data is needed immediately and which can be processed with lower priority. However, simply focus ing on increasing capacity is not enough.
It must be thought of as sustainable ca pacity. As the demand for data rises, we will see an inevitable impact on footprint and density, but providers must find ways to implement this capacity with sustain able considerations front of mind. We will also see a high degree of public cloud growing at the expense of the enterprise. This will lead to increased focus upon the internet of everything, as the public de mands instant connectivity between the ever-growing ecosystem of devices.
In what areas do you think the data cen tre industry can make a real impact when it comes to sustainability efforts?
There are many areas in which the data centre industry can look to address sus tainability. Providers should seek to op timise cooling processes and how their energy and resource consumption can be limited. Reducing waste, particularly heat, through recovery processes that repur pose excess to support the heating needs of local communities or offices should also be a priority. There are also oppor tunities to drive more efficiencies in the management and storage of renewable energy, such as solar or wind power, es pecially in off-grid, remote locations. Look ing at innovation in power generation and storage, hydrogen fuel cells are showing a
real potential to become the next big thing in the energy sector.
Ultimately, it’s also about lifecycle plan ning. Both old and new data centres will require periodical equipment upgrades, refurbishments and optimisation services to keep up their performance while en hancing efficiency and reducing waste. Data centres will also have a big role in supporting sustainability across all sec tors – indeed, key applications like arti ficial intelligence, big data and machine learning can help other industries become more efficient and eco-friendly.
We are seeing more and more investment in the Middle East (ME) and also Africa, with Google’s Blue-Raman submarine ca bles as one example. Furthermore, while cloud adoption is in its infancy in the Mid dle East, with the major cloud service pro viders having little to no facilities in these locations, it is rapidly evolving.
At Vertiv, we have now reorganised our sales teams in the region and will look at ME and Africa under a separate lens and adjust our strategies accordingly. Success looks different between the territories due to their contrasting needs, so there must be a clearer distinction between how we progress in both. For ME, the key opportu nities lie mainly in modular and local colo cation space. In 2021, 92% of the data for this region was stored outside of ME, so there is a huge opportunity to move this infrastructure into the region.
With the ongoing 5G rollout, especially in the UAE, KSA and Qatar, the opportu nity is also around facilitating and imple menting hyperscale data centre space. Furthermore, many Mobile Network Operators in ME are offloading their assets to Energy Services Companies (ESCs). The ESC then adopts the responsibility of creating energy efficient solutions whilst maintaining performance. Vertiv has de ployed thousands of such solutions with in the territory of ME and Africa utilising solar hybrid solutions that are completely independent from the grid. This is a huge technology advancement on that front, and our portfolio and on-going innova tions are uniquely suited to support all these opportunities and challenges.
In this day and age, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who can confidently say their data is completely secure. The sad truth is, very little of our personal data is safe from prying eyes, and this is some thing more and more people are becom ing aware of.
For instance, you’ve probably had an ex perience where you looked something up on the internet and then got assaulted by targeted advertisements for the very thing you were looking up. How does this work, though?
The answer is cookies. These crumbs of data that are stored on your device are what enable websites to track your activ ity.
Initially, websites weren’t even required to inform you when installing cookies on your device. The landmark General Data Protection Regulation, passed by the EU and implemented in May 2018, made it mandatory for websites to be transpar ent about their data collection and pur pose, resulting in those notifications you get asking you to accept or reject cookies when you go to a website.
Cookies, however, are just a drop in the ocean when talking about data priva cy. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1948, describes the right to priva cy as a basic human right, but the truth is most big tech corporations simply don’t care. Their argument is that we’ve already consented to their data policies. But, let’s be honest here—no one really reads through license agreements, do they?
They’re extremely drawn out and use complicated legal and technical jargon, and this plays into the hands of these corporations.
They also argue that no one is being compelled to use their software and that we can always use an alternative if we’re unhappy with their policies, but that’s a moot point. No one should be expected to forfeit their privacy to use a product.
The data collected about an individual’s browsing habits can also be used to create a profile for advertising purpos es, but this leads to yet another issue— not a single company, including today’s big tech companies, can say its data is
completely safe. Data breaches still hap pen and compromise the personal data of millions, yet most companies simply view these breaches as ordinary set backs. The good news is more people are talking about data privacy, and some have even deleted their social media accounts. Whether this will impact how big tech views and handles our personal data, however, remains to be seen.
We at ManageEngine take data privacy very seriously and have done so before it became fashionable, politically correct, or legally binding to take such a position. We ask for only the least amount of infor mation necessary, gathering only what we believe is essential for doing business or for the specific transaction at hand. In fact, we completely disable non-essential and intrusive third-party cookies from all our websites and products. You can even disable all cookies completely to pre vent your browser from sending us any information.

On the sidelines of GITEX Global this year, we will be hosting Huawei Connect, the company’s annual flagship event for the global ICT industry. We will be exploring where industry digitalization is heading, what opportunities it brings, and how dig ital technologies such as cloud, AI, and 5G can be practically applied in different indus try scenarios to fully unleash their value.
We will also be bringing back again for another year Huawei Innovation Day 2022 for the Middle East and Africa. This year’s event will be held under the theme of “Col laboration to Unleash Innovation for Sus tainable Digital Future” in collaboration with the Arab ICT Organization (AICTO), where leading regional and global experts in gov ernment, academia, regulators, industry
analysts, as well as Huawei’s senior lead ership team will share their expertise over keynotes speeches and panel discussions covering topics such as green ICT, digital transformation, and talent development.
Our mission remains to bring digital to every person, home, and organisation for a fully connected, intelligent world. Theo retical breakthroughs, advancements in software, and reshaping architecture will lay solid foundations for our future surviv al and development. The key to achieving these three goals is to open up, innovate, and embrace global talent.
Huawei constantly reinvests in R&D, and that has kept us at the forefront of the global ICT sector & our R&D investments over the past decade exceed $110 billion. But the idea of development is not limited to technologies alone. Bridging the digital skills gap is another crucial aspect of Hua wei’s investment and innovation strategy.
An effective talent development strategy is key for the region to fully leverage digital transformation. While regional universities have expanded their ICT offerings, the de mand for ICT skills is rising exponentially while new technologies are emerging daily. Therefore, enabling solid capacity-build ing for the youth in ICT is a prerequisite in today’s digital world, as is upgrading and upskilling for experienced hires or anyone considering a mid-career switch.
We will continue to invest in ICT talent development in the region. Through our Seeds for the Future CSR initiative, Huawei ICT Competition, and many other initiatives, we promote collaborations between public and private sector entities, educators, and technology companies to develop talent.

What are your expectations from the event this year?
The last couple of years has been far from ordinary, both for cybersecurity and busi ness in general. Every year, certain threats grow rapidly as cybercriminals focus their efforts on a particularly effective or lucra tive attack technique, such as ransom ware or cryptojacking.
2022 began with massive exploitation of one of the most serious vulnerabilities on the internet, the Apache log4j, and contin ued with full-blown cyber warfare from the Russia-Ukraine war. Check Point Research
(CPR) reported that the second quarter of 2022 saw an all-time peak of 1.2K attacks per organization globally, a 32% increase compared to Q2 2021, whereas UAE ob served an average of 970 weekly attacks per organization in Q2 2022, a massive 178% increase year-over-year.
However, one of the most worrying trends in 2022 is the growth of cybercrime across the board becoming firmly entrenched as a state-level weapon, including the new ransomware method of ‘Country Extor tion’, state-affiliated hacktivism, and the expansion of ransomware as the number one threat.
This year’s GITEX provides an opportunity to educate the customers on the impor tance of having Gen V solutions to battle the current threat landscape and show case Check Point Software’s products and solutions that provide end-to-end security from the enterprise to the cloud, to mobile workers’ personal devices.

Are you participating in GITEX Global 2022? If yes, which products and solu tions will you be showcasing at the event?
Yes, Nutanix will be participating at GITEX Global 2022. We will be sharing our com pany’s vision and strategy that emphasiz es that enterprises should never settle for Cloud chaos, but rather, embrace a hybrid multi-cloud platform that prioritizes sim plicity, flexibility, and freedom of choice.
Over the past year, Nutanix has re-pack aged its solutions to make them even more simple, in order to offer a consis tent operating model across all types of clouds: public, private, and hybrid. The company has created an easy-to-con sume set of solutions to support custom ers’ digital transformation initiatives. The new portfolio removes the complexity of ten associated with offering a full range of hybrid cloud services.
The simplification of packaging, metering, and pricing enables customers to easily plan for their changing needs. Custom ers can accelerate their cloud journey by taking advantage of Nutanix validated de signs and deployment best practices for 5 common use cases around which the company has designed its solution port folio. We are keen to demonstrate these innovations at GITEX:
1. Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI):
Providing complete software solu tions including virtual compute, storage, and networking for virtual machines and containers, that can be deployed in private data cen ters on the hardware of the organi zation’s choice or in public clouds
2. Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM): If an organization is managing mul tiple cloud deployments, Nutanix can support by driving consistent governance across private and public clouds, helping custom ers accelerate their cloud journey
3. Nutanix Unified Storage (NUS): Nutanix supports a variety of work loads deployed anywhere – private, public, or hybrid by allowing soft ware-defined storage for multiple protocols (volumes, files, objects). This is a single point of manage ment for all storage resources
4. Nutanix End User Computing Solu tions: This speaks to running appli cations and workloads anywhere, on any device supporting the new normal of remote work and remote learning
5. Nutanix Database Service (NDB):
Simplifies database management across hybrid multi-cloud environ ments for database engines like PostgreSQL, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, and Oracle Database
One of the key areas of discussions at GI TEX will be around ‘data’ – the new cur rency in a digital world. Companies are increasingly struggling with managing their databases in an efficient manner. Wouldn’t it be great if an organization’s da tabases just worked, with all the complex ity and tedium of database administration and maintenance hidden from view?
We’ve done just that with Nutanix Era, a Database-as-a-Service (DaaS) solu tion ‘On Your Terms’. In the same way, the Nutanix Cloud Platform has made IT
infrastructure ‘invisible’, Nutanix Era is a database lifecycle management software that runs on the Nutanix Cloud Platform and empowers organizations to achieve invisible databases. Era can manage databases deployed on on-premises infrastructure and on a public cloud of choice, making it a true multi-cloud solution ready to modernize databases.
As always, GITEX offers a brilliant platform to promote our brand. Most importantly, it’s a way to reconnect with our customers and partners at scale. We anticipate even more traffic coming in from the other GCC countries, such as Saudi Arabia – which is a hyper-growth market for us.

We intend to meet with as many potential customers as possible and leverage the re lationships with our distributors and chan nel partners to help customers gain visibili ty of their data, irrespective of the location, and to protect their valuable data from ran somware. We also have intentions to make some strategic announcements in terms of partnerships and distribution.
What will be your theme of participation at GITEX?
The focus of our participation will be to raise awareness around Cohesity and our Next-Gen Data Management approach which sits at the intersection of three of the highest priority business issues today – cy ber security, cloud, and data management.
We intend to explain why traditional data management products are failing busi nesses—neither safeguarding nor empow ering enterprise data—while adding consid erable complexity. And legacy thinking will not solve this challenge. We aim to help customers and partners discover Next-Gen Data Management which takes them on a transformational approach that makes it easy to protect, manage, and derive value from their data.
Another key theme will be around our Threat Defense Architecture - a multi-lay ered architecture and framework that brings together a range of our products, services, and capabilities, and ecosystem partners, to help customers identify threats through AI and ML, protect their data, and easily recover in the event of a cyber-at tack. With this framework, customers can benefit from resiliency at scale, and they can protect their data with encryption, hy
perscale-inspired fault tolerance, data im mutability, air-gapping and data isolation solutions, built on immutable and tam per-resistant technology to facilitate clean data resiliency.
It will help them go beyond zero trust with advanced access controls like MFA, RBAC and Quorum and ensure they can keep the bad guys out. We empower customers to catch ransomware before it’s too Late with our AI-powered near real-time anom aly detection that identifies threats so that organisations can respond and remediate quickly.
Do you plan to run any online engage ments such as webinars and offline engagements such as tech talks, demos, keynotes, and so on, alongside GITEX?
At the Cisco stand, we will be performing live demos and providing real-time access to our labs so customers can come and ex perience true next-gen data management. As already mentioned, we will intend to help customers and partners understand the Cohesity value proposition and get to know our technology and people much better.
How have your regional strategies changed in recent months?
The recent and significant increase in ran somware in the region has afforded us a lot of opportunities to meet with new cus tomers and partners. They are no longer accepting that legacy solutions work and are looking for a new way of managing and protecting their data. With this in mind, we are going deeper with fewer key partners and getting great traction with their cus tomers.
Gordon Love, the Vice President for MEA at Mandiant, says digitalisation is on the rise in the region
Which products and solutions will you be showcasing at the event?
GITEX is one of the key events on our calendar in the region. This year, we’ll be showcasing Mandiant Advantage, our multi-vendor XDR platform that delivers Mandiant’s expertise and frontline intelli gence to security teams of all sizes.
One of the modules within Mandiant Ad vantage is Attack Surface Management which allows organisations to see them selves through the eyes of the attacker. This has rapidly become a top priority given the sharp uptick in adoption of cloud, SaaS, and mobile across a distrib uted workforce which leads to an expand ing, evolving, and changing attack sur face subject to an increasing number of
sophisticated threats. Organisations can use the insights from Attack Surface Man agement to continuously discover and monitor their exposures and enable intel ligence and red teams to operationalise and inform risk management.
What are your expectations from the event this year? What will be your theme of participation at GITEX?
GITEX provides a great opportunity to en gage our customers and partners, as well as other organisations looking for ways to improve their cyber security posture. One thing we can always count on in the cyber realm is the level of uncertainty. At tackers regularly change their approach to evade detection, leaving defenders struggling to keep up, so we’ll be talking to
organisations about taking a country/in dustry/company-specific intelligence-led approach to strengthening their defenses.
How have your regional strategies changed in recent months?
Across the MEA and emerging region, we have a strong local presence, with a team based across the UAE, KSA, Qatar, Egypt, Morocco, South Africa, Turkey, Poland, Romania, and serving the whole region.
Approximately half of the team is part of our consulting business, and as a business, we help organisations and government entities to develop more effective and efficient cyber security programs and instill confidence in their readiness to defend against and respond to cyber threats.

What will be your theme of participa tion at GITEX?
Through our participation, we intend to demonstrate how the democratisation of IT can unlock the power of innovation. Freshworks was born of its founder’s de sire to build software that people love to use as he couldn’t understand why tech nology had to be so complicated and ex pensive — and why users disliked using the software so much.
The mission was, and remains, to mas sively simplify business software, de signing first and foremost for the frontline user, then for the team, and then for the managers. This is a message that has resonated strongly with businesses of all sizes and we have no doubt this will be the case with attendees at GITEX Global as well.
Do you plan to run any online engage ments such as webinars and offline engagements such as tech talks, demos, keynotes, and so on, alongside GITEX? Karthik Akula, the regional sales manag er, will deliver a presentation at the Ris

Are you participating in GITEX Global 2022? If yes, which products and solu tions will you be showcasing at the event?
As it expands, the Middle East’s health care industry needs technology that sim plifies and streamlines workflows, saving time and resources to invest in patient care. 65% of those working in healthcare in the MEA region claim that poor scan ning technology is preventing the move to digitisation, according to the recent survey results. Hospitals can now scan and print quickly with Epson’s WorkForce printers and scanners, and interact effectively with Epson’s ultra-short throw projectors, en abling faster patient care – all on display at GITEX 2022.

What are your expectations from the event this year?
We continue to invest in the Middle East and are excited about our participation at GITEX. The week represents a cornerstone in the Middle East cybersecurity events calendar, and a fantastic opportunity to educate part ners, customers, and prospects on the cy ber-risks facing employees today.
What will be your theme of participation at GITEX?
During this year’s event, we aim to educate organizations on how to better protect their critical information in the world of hybrid work.
We have seen a huge shift in the way people work since the last in-person show, which has in turn driven cybercriminals to continue to target people rather than infrastructure. With employees now forming the defensive perimeter wherever they work, our recent research shows that 32% of Emirati CISOs agree that they have seen an increase in tar geted attacks in the last 12 months.
Organizations must deploy a cybersecurity strategy that combines people, process, and technology. Data doesn’t lose itself. People lose data – it doesn’t walk out of the door on its own. It’s either stolen by an external
attacker via compromised credentials, lost due to a careless user, or taken by a mali cious employee, often to a competitor. This is why it’s critical that organizations have robust technological controls in place to monitor and protect their data, while also focusing on educating their people on how to identify and take action against such threats.
Do you plan to run any online engagements such as webinars and offline engagements such as tech talks, demos, keynotes, and so on, alongside GITEX?
Proofpoint will be showcasing its peo ple-centric cybersecurity solutions through ongoing demos on its stand: D20, Hall 2. We will also be hosting an inter active game on the stand – with prizes for the winner! Visit the stand to take your turn.
Proofpoint continues to invest in innovation to secure organizations in the Middle East and beyond. We are focused on developing security innovations that protect people— wherever they may work—and defend their data from today’s most harmful risks. To stay ahead of the threat actors, we invest hundreds of millions annually into our prod ucts and rely on the most advanced AI/ML technologies to defend our customers.
Driven by the accelerated adoption of workfrom-anywhere practices, we have made several innovations to our Information Pro tection, Email Security, Threat Protection, and Cloud Security solutions.

How have your regional strategies changed in recent months?
Well, we recently launched our first brickand-mortar store – situated at Dubai Hills
Mall in the UAE. Solidifying our commit ment to the region, our next flagship store is planned in Qatar located in Lagoona Mall, followed by stores in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and other regions in the coming months. As we rapidly shift into a post-pandemic re ality, our commitment stays the same, but the timeframes are projected to accelerate. Through the increase of brand partner ships and retail penetration, we continue to work towards providing the best we can for our customers.
Our strategy has been directed towards brand expansion; this has led to penetra tion into multiple new retail spaces in the Middle East region. While we keep strength ening the retail business, simultaneously, we plan to scale up our e-commerce busi ness too. Additionally, our most nascent business ‘B2B’ vertical is maximising its exposure in the region – with the advent of Commercial Display Solutions, Smart Media Equipment, Medical Equipment, and Smart Transport Solutions. This underlines our commitment to investing in regional markets, driving innovation, and delivering quality to our customers.
Through GITEX Global 2022, we aim to tap into the newer markets in the region and make the brand easily accessible.
Any other info you would like to add?
This year is extremely crucial for the brand, as we are the sponsors of the global sporting event FIFA World Cup 2022 this association has increased the brand visi bility and thus raises the expectations not only of our business partners but also end consumers. And to meet these innovation standards, Hisense is introducing major tech solutions in each of its product seg ments. For one, it gives us an opportunity to gain a deeper understand ing of their challenges and growth oppor tunities. It also allows us to demonstrate how the innovations we have brought to market over the last 12 months can en able them to unleash innovation at scale.
Given the pivot we are seeing in region
towards subscription-based consump tion models, and a more sustainable ap proach to IT, we are particularly excited about the value proposition we are high lighting at this year’s edition of GITEX and we encourage visitors to stop by our stand.
What will be your theme of participation at GITEX?
The accelerated pace of digitalization in the Middle East has been underpinned by the flexibility and convenience of modern as-a-service offerings. The data storage industry, at large, however has not matched this pace of innovation — legacy solutions remain complex, lack agility and flexibility and aren’t innovative enough to meet the data requirements of modern businesses.
As such, our theme, or goal, for GITEX 2022 is to showcase how Pure Storage, with a design approach that is funda mentally rooted in simplicity and cus tomer-centricity, continues to disrupt the storage industry with uncomplicated technology that enables business trans formation in a sustainable and impactful manner.

LEXAR has adapted and adjusted its strategic plan for the Middle East region. This region is now more politically and economically stable and is poised for growth, therefore showing a huge poten tial for growth in our industry.
We have invested into manpower and will aggressively pursue Middle Eastern and Pan African Distributors to acquire bigger market share.
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have always been compelled to find and leverage every opportunity to re main competitive and stay ahead of the curve. Amidst all of the disruption of the past two years, this need has become a business imperative.
The pressures of the Covid-19 pandemic, including lockdown and restrictions, meant that many small businesses bore the brunt of the impact, closing their doors for long periods of time, and losing out on revenue as a result. In addition, the shift to remote or hybrid working has often not been easy, particularly with the added pressure of constrained budgets and a rapidly evolving workforce and technology market.
In this article, we look at some top tips to keep SMEs from losing their competitive edge. Let’s start with the most obvious:
A recent World Economic Forum whitepa per found that SMEs are still at a low to moderate level of technological maturity. Less than a quarter (23%) of SMEs noted that the changes brought on by the pan demic had led to the acceleration of their digital transformation goals. However, those that do adopt emerging technologies such as AI, and continue moving to cloudbased systems, for example, are seeing a noticeable transformation in productivity and efficiency, thanks to better access to new markets, slicker operations, and re duced overall costs.
While small businesses that are slow to digitally transform their operations are try ing to keep CAPEX low in the short term, those that are maturing into digitalisation are setting themselves up to be more re silient to ongoing changes in the market place, thereby future-proofing their com petitive advantage.
The key to this process is cloud technol ogy, which is crucial for responsiveness and agility. With the right technology ven dors, technologies, and expertise, small
businesses can accelerate their transfor mation efforts, to remain better prepared to navigate whatever lies ahead.
Employee devices are more than just a means to an end. While SMEs should pri oritise open discussions around device ex pectations with employees, employers ulti mately also need to take into account other core devices’ functional features such as mobility, security, reliability, and connectiv ity, in addition, to form factor and design. Hybrid working is here to stay, so providing a degree of freedom through end-user de vices is vital. SMEs need to be investing in lightweight and compact, yet powerful and secure devices.
Another thing to consider is regular de vice refreshes to ensure employees can enjoy the latest technologies and SMEs can avoid any unwanted disparity between personal and workplace technology. To future-proof their employee engagement strategy and remain attractive to new and existing talent, it’s vital that SMEs adopt a new model for procuring and provisioning technology, particularly end-user devices, which involves their workforce from the early stages.
For smaller businesses the stakes are high and one of their most important assets is its people – employees are even more so the face and voice behind the business and their productivity propels an organisa tion forward. In today’s digital era, enabling employees to choose the technology they want to use is one of the most important ways of retaining talent. Indeed, a recent Gensler Workplace Study found that 76% of employees say that having a choice of technology would positively impact their performance, while 60% also said it would likely affect their job satisfaction. Attracting and retaining talent will ultimately give you the edge over your competition.
Increase Agility and Adaptability Agility and adaptability indicate that a business is able to recognise and
maximise opportunities. This is import ant. We all know that SMEs don’t have the same resources as larger enterprises, so being flexible can often be the defining factor that ensures they keep pace with an ever-changing technological landscape and growing demand from consumers. Disruption is a great way to stay ahead of the competition. In fact, research by the McKinsey Agile Tribe shows that agile or ganisations have a 70% chance of being in the top quartile of organisational health – one of the best indicators of long-term performance.
Technologies like AI have the biggest and most positive impact on SME agility today. But it doesn’t end there. Collaboration tools to enable remote working, automation, and analytics to help manage and make sense of customer and employee data all have a place here. Advanced data analytics, in par ticular, can help key decision-makers un cover bottlenecks, improve efficiency, and identify areas for optimisation. For SMEs, digitised operations will generate this kind of data for analysis.
The competitive advantages of outsourc ing can be numerous, but this type of strat egy has to apply carefully. For example, in growth periods companies may find that they’d benefit from extra staff – but they can’t afford the expense of hiring and sup porting more full-time employees. This slows down momentum and limits growth. For SMEs in this scenario, outsourcing work could be more beneficial. It’s more affordable than building an in-house team, and a great way to gain access to fresh talent and maintain growth while keeping the core of your team focused on internal tasks.
Every business needs to maintain a com petitive advantage to stay relevant and successful. A combination of accelerating technology transformation, using the right hardware, remaining flexible and open to change, and using the right partners to out source, can make this a simple feat.
Most employees in the UAE want a hybrid or full-time remote work arrangement. It is a sentiment that is echoed by people working across industries, including the local finance and banking sectors. But as businesses began contemplating a return to office plans earlier this summer, the financial and banking sector seemed to be reverting to old habits and rallying for in-office presence.
Bolstered by the COVID-19 pandemic and a tight labour market, worker demands for more flexibility have only increased in recent months – even with the world reopening again. Standard Chartered showed foresight and committed to con tinue to offer permanent flexible work for its staff from as early as January 2021. The initiative started with 9 of its primary markets, including the UAE.
The bank also collaborated with flexible workspace services provider IWG so em ployees worldwide can work from any of IWG’s 3,500 locations internationally. HSBC has also formally certified hybrid working with the ambition of reducing office space by 40%. On the flip side, Bar clays announced that it was looking to ramp up employees’ return to its London and New York offices.
Clearly, only a handful of organizations within the financial sector are realising the risks of a ‘one size fits all’ work approach, as many workers want to retain the flexi bility they had during the pandemic. Nev ertheless, while the workforce may have changed, the office is still equipped for the old way of working. Recent changes are shaping a new paradigm, and businesses across the financial sector must keep up to meet employee expectations.
Anyone who has entered an office since early 2020 would likely have experienced the eerie silence of the rows of empty desks and cubicles. Memories of battling colleagues for coveted meeting spaces
and groups huddling around a single lap top are probably still fresh.
Since the advent of remote working, many of us have experienced significant increases in productivity. However, the quality of our interactions has dramatical ly fallen. As a result, work meetings have regularly failed to meet expectations. A recent study by Barco showed a 25-point decline between 2020 and 2021 on its meeting barometer. The findings further indicated that 57% of white-collar workers considered meeting rooms as the most useful spaces in a post-pandemic world. Hence, employees no longer view the of fice as simply a place to work. Rather, they think of it as an encouraging space for more collaboration.
In this scenario, the opportunity to realign office spaces may come as a system shock to an industry long accustomed to the traditional “cubicle rows” layout. Nevertheless, as professionals now covet meeting spaces, they will be a functional must-have. Currently, 50% of workers visit offices to host meeting calls in a more pro fessional setting, indicating that the desire for efficient meetings will be the real drive to an office return. Therefore, accommo dating these new behaviours should be a priority for the financial and banking sec tor.
Improved office layout isn’t the only change needed for a hybrid environment. There’s a great opportunity for businesses to upgrade outdated or inefficient collab oration technologies. Like other indus tries, financial sector employees have embraced the laptop as the main device to work, collaborate, and host meetings, fuelling the surge in preference for Bring Your Own Meeting solutions (BYOM).
Barco’s research indicates that 77% of re spondents cannot imagine working with out their laptops and have enjoyed sharing their screen and content with just a simple click. With meetings now controlled via
the user’s laptop, businesses must invest in solutions that continue this seamless connectivity. To that end, agnostic solu tions allow workers to connect and col laborate irrespective of the meeting plat form (Webex by Cisco, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and so on).
Additionally, the return to offices is un likely to be instant or unanimous. Despite calls from certain corners of the finance and banking sector to do so, many em ployees will continue to work from home periodically or permanently. Therefore, companies should ensure that their meet ing rooms are well equipped for hybrid meetings.
While security is important in any industry, the highly sensitive and data-driven nature of financial work makes it critical for suc cess. Early in the pandemic, hijacked con ferencing platforms and cyber-attacks by hackers/pranksters became a regular oc currence. With meetings likely to continue in a hybrid fashion, it is essential that any future tech invested in is secure. Particu larly with agnostic solutions that connect the user’s laptop to meeting room equip ment, there must be strong security con siderations. For starters, the sector should prioritise investing in solutions that incor porate security directly into the product’s design.
Another key responsibility comes from within the company via the education of employees. Ensuring that workers are well aware of prevalent dangers and the neces sary precautions to be taken when using a new device is paramount. Like others, the financial sector is still learning to shape a future of work that accommodates its employees’ needs and preferences. As the industry begins to embrace hybrid work, it creates plenty of opportunities to elim inate the inefficiencies of the pre-pandem ic world, thereby reimagining everything from work technology to office spaces.
