Preservation The project required to design an Art Center located in the back of the arboretum at Penn State adjacent to Hartley Woods. In addition, we were allowed to choose an art for our center to focus on. I chose metal works and based the concept of my building on the concept of the site. The arboretum is known for only housing Pennsylvania native plants, and this ideal is carried into the surrounding woods as well. Diminishing invasive species through controlled burning techniques to replant native trees in their place. The design of the Art Center started here with materials, using the ancient Japanese method called Shou Sugi Ban to char the wood of the exterior by exposing it to controlled fire which intern preserves it. Not only was the material inspired by the concept of the surrounding area but also the drastically sloped roofs alternating directions. Relating to the roofs of the woods, the tree canopies that overlap each other alternating directions and angles irregularly. A Library was to be studied and comprehended through modeling. The Sendai Mediatheque in Japan by Toyo Ito has three concepts which make up the whole building, Plates, Skin and Tubes. I studied the Tubes in particlar hand how they represent the fluditiy of function of the building along with all of their other purposes such as, structure, circulation, temperature, and lighting. In Visual Communications Semester 1, we learned how to construct a perspective, to find shadows, and to represent buildings through orthographics like elevations, plans, sections, and isometrics. Professor- Jamie Cooper Skills Used - Hand Drawing

The requirements of the project were first to analyze and study a building on campus. The next requirement was to choose a concept and study how the concept is used in the building and what it means. While studying Old Main, I began to realize that the circulation of the building was not what you would expect. I spent time outside the building counting how many people went in and out of each door over an hour period on Thursdays during lunch time and began to understand the circulation plan of the building as perpendicular to the laid out plan of the building. I was very interested in the use of secondary doors to replace the use of the primary entry. Professor- Cathy Braash TA- Julio Diarte Skills Used - Hand Drawing - Photoshop

In the design build project, we were required to work on a piece of furniture with a group and renovate it. My group had to renovate the work table that houses all of the tools for first year students to use when the woodshop is closed. My part was to design and construct clamps to help someone who is using the tools by themselves. Professor- James Kalsbeek TA- Julio Diarte Skills Used - Woodshop - Welding - Plasma Cutter
