Lorem Ipsum a new series of works by Dedy Sufriadi Lorem ipsum, perhaps the most pervasive body of Latin text used in current times, is something well known in publishing and graphic design. It is essentially filler or dummy text, in the Latin language but without much meaning, often used to allow designers and typesetters to create more natural-looking text-based design placeholders and templates.
Emerging Indonesian visual artist Dedy Sufriadi has chosen Lorem Ipsum as a name to identify his current series of artworks, which has its roots in the early part of his career, (c. late 1990s, early 2000s). In the earlier works, the text used, somewhat similar in terms of visual style, were excerpts from actual writings on philosophy and subject matter related to central ideas in specific works. Throughout his career, as is commonly known, text has been an important core component in Dedy’s art. As a person, Dedy is well-read, particularly in the area of existentialist philosophy, and his earlier works bear witness to how much he delved into this area of study. In time, he made the decision to move away from pure intellectual expression, instead embracing a more intuitive, spontaneous approach to his art making.
Despite this, one cannot help but feel that Dedy’s works still embody a strong sense of the philosophical, a reflection perhaps of the artist himself, someone who is an intellectual, thinking person. Over the years, he has become a living embodiment of existential thought, and this is apparent in Dedy Sufriadi as a person. As such, this characteristic cannot help but manifest itself in the works he produces.

Instead of verbatim text and textural references sourced from philosophy, when this style was revisited in 2017, Dedy decided to rebirth it as a series of works using random alphabets, numbers and phrases, some of which are still intelligible, but the bulk of which are little more than stream of consciousness gibberish. They are, in essence, the visual embodiment of what Lorem Ipsum is – placeholder text shaped and set in its final form, awaiting something more final to take root.
Full Artist’s Profile
But the finality of design and meaning is not something that will be rendered and made permanent on canvas; it will be something that the viewer formulates in their own mind’s eye, informed by the viewer’s own life experience and neurolinguistic connections he or she makes with the artworks. Although textual and textural highlights may be made in specific languages familiar to Dedy (primarily Bahasa Indonesia and English), the Lorem Ipsum series of works embody a visual character that transcends barriers of intelligible language, territorial nuance, and national specificity.

Happy Day & Colour of Face two series of works by Indra Dodi From early on in his career, Indra recognized his chosen path as a visual artist would be a life-long journey that would demand a great deal of personal commitment, energy, imagination, knowledge, and technical skills. Indra is, in fact, very serious about his chosen vocation, which may not be immediately apparent from his artworks, naïve childlike renderings of everyday life, drawn from the artist’s astute sense of observation. Indra’s artistic journey has gone through a lengthy style metamorphosis since beginning to paint in 2000, from realism to abstracts, before arriving at the style he currently produces his works in, visually whimsical naïve-styled figurative art representing life stories as observed by the artist. His art is reflective of the artist as a natural storyteller, using color variations and everyday objects to create visual stories of encounters, events and people he observes. Just about any encounter or observation might make it to Indra’s canvas.
His Happy Day series of works is an example of how Indra draws from observations he has made, some of which many people would find mundane or unimportant. For Indra, the family unit is an important building block of society, and a happy family unit the foundation for a happy society. Going on outings, like in many parts of the world, is one way the family bonds, what more if there is joy and happiness associated with those outings. The green used as backgrounds for these works reflects the lushness of nature, green paddy fields being what Indra observes around Yogyakarta, the Indonesian city he now calls home. Another example of how the artist’s observation is translated to the canvas is exemplified in the Colour of Face series of works, one of which has been selected to be exhibited in this year’s edition of Art Fair Philippines. The basis of this series is quite simply human diversity, of how each person is unique, even individual members from the same family, both in terms of features and behavior. Indra has used this simple observation to create an entire series of works. Diversity in this series is projected through the use of different color tones, expressions, and poses, presented in a style that mimics the naïve innocence of how young children might express these differences observed in the people around them. Artemis Art about us Since our establishment in 2011, Artemis Art’s primary focus has been on promoting young and emerging artists, primarily from Indonesia and Malaysia. This is within the context of our longer term aim of becoming a gallery specializing in contemporary art by artists from the Southeast Asia region. Among the artists we currently promote include, of course, Dedy Sufriadi and Indra Dodi, the two visual artists featured in this year’s Art Fair Philippines, in addition to several other young and emerging visual artists from both countries. Since 2014, we have been actively participating in strategic international art fairs around Asia, as a way of providing wider exposure for the artists whom we promote, in addition to carrying out exhibitions in our own gallery space in Kuala Lumpur. By being part of art fairs, visual artists are able to extend their reach to a more international audience, well beyond merely having their artworks appreciated by enthusiasts within the borders of their respective home countries.
Artemis Art is located within Publika at Solaris Dutamas, a niche shopping mall that has become an important hub for art and culture in Kuala Lumpur. We are among one of the handful of active commercial galleries that operate at Publika, which also houses several artist run pop-up galleries and is the home to mapKL (comprising the White Box and Black Box spaces). Apart from exhibitions held within our own gallery space, Artemis Art has staged exhibitions in collaboration with other spaces within and outside Malaysia. These have included group exhibitions in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, and in Taipei, Taiwan. In addition to our website, we have a reasonably wide online presence, particularly on key social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. The Artemis Art Team February 2018
