ARCHITECTURE HUB: spaces we inhabit
FINAL PROJECT DESCRIPTION: My project looks at elements of light and sound on the site and surrounding context and analyses quiet areas in the CBD. My masterplan draws from the study of elements of light and sound on the site and uses them as a tool to enhance it’s performance as an architecture school and a public space. My project creates a strong dialogue with the community parkland in CBD and Flagstaff Gardens; It is open for access from all main surrounding streets creating a porous urban edge that invites everyone transforming the site into a parkland extension of Queen Victoria Market. Studios and offices are spread evenly throughout the building allowing for collaboration between staff and students, which is important in architecture school. The spaces use different techniques and finishes that absorb, enhance or pass light and sound through to other spaces allowing for each area of the building to transform and use light and sound in a way that would enhance its performance. The building acts as a teaching tool allowing students to draw ideas from surrounding architecture by experiencing a set of bold spaces that explore different light and sound qualities.

WEEK 3 DEVELOPING MASSING
MASSING DEVELOPMENT: This week we were asked to develop a massing and its sections that would consider the site analysis done in the past week. My massing looks at vegetation, sound and circulation of the site, as well as taking over the South Market Sheds to use them as a part of the building.

WEEK 4 DESIGNING A PAVILLION
DESIGNING A PAVILION: This week we were asked to develop and design a pavilion that would accommodate the needs of Victoria market and the future architecture school. My pavilion works as a part of the terrain but at the same time having a similar fluidity to my building, allowing people to use it as a part of parkland extension of Victoria Market.

PAVILLION ELEVATIONS
DESIGNING A PAVILION: My pavilion design uses minimal exposed structure and is primarily supported on trees which are used instead of columns. This gives it a sense of a creation of nature, looking like a natural occurrence.

WEEK 6 DEVELOPING 3 MASSINGS
MASSING ONE: The new structure does not parasite the existing building, it positions itself in the voids left, it is extremely careful. old and new fulfill each other: the existing one gives a presence of an ensemble, while the old one stays back, quiet. The facade of the new volume is made translucent to allow for more light access. Studios and offices are placed in the new building on transversal ends, connected by function areas and lecture rooms in the old building.

MASSING OPTION ONE
MASSING TWO: Connections and Space Inspired by Le Corbusier’s design the massing dIvides space into parts connecting it by elevated passages and lifting spaces up on columns creating a free ground floor. Relation to the sheds is minimal with only the elevated corridors connecting the two. The space is divided in a way that allows for student areas and function rooms to be connected by corridors and offices to be located in the same volume as student areas to allow for communication between students and staff.

29
MASSING OPTION TWO
MASSING THREE: The old shed building becomes a backbone that connects the building parts and distributes people providing circulation. The bridge between the sheds creates a connection between parts of the building, the circular windows in the corridor activate facades on the north and south sides as well as serve a seating areas for students. The circular volume’s roofs are made with blurred glass to allow for sun access to light up the spaces inside the volumes. The studios that require more light will be in the top parts of these volumes and the functions and lecture rooms will be at the bottom which also makes them accessible to public.

WEEK 8 SECTIONS, VIEWS AND PHENOMENA DETAIL
PHENOMENA DETAIL SECTION: My building’s phenomena is working with strong acoustics and manipulation of sound and light. The detail section represents a moment of light and sound coming from the lecture theatre on the top floor into the funnel that directs light and sound to the lower level. This allows students to receive sunlight from the outside and hear the lecture from the lecture theatre at the same time being on the second floor.

WEEK 9 CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT FLOOR PLANS RESEARCH AND VIEWS
SOUND REFLECTION STUDY: My building is working with manipulation of sound. To gain some knowledge on how sound travels and reflects from different shapes and surfaces I have done the following sound study which helped me to make several important decisions in my project.

PLAN DEVELOPMENT: This week I started to further develop my plans and allocating spaces for different activities like classes and labs, studios and exhibition spaces. I wanted my building to not have a distinct separation between staff and student areas to encourage communication and collaboration between staff and students.
