Three Cottages Your wedding venue Words: Simon Paterson Images: Three Cottages
D
id your partner propose to you on valentines, or did you propose and that special someone said, yes? Then we may just have the wedding venue for you. The Three Cottages is a fantastic, historic village pub that you will be proud to call your wedding venue. Nestled on the outskirts of Winsick, a small village on the south side of the historic market town of Chesterfield, the Three Cottages is everything you would expect from a traditional, local, British pub. A place where you’re always welcome and relaxed, whether you’re by yourself or with loved ones. John and Nicky have been the proud proprietors of the Three Cottages for a little over eight months’ now and are going from strength to strength. Andy and Lynn Ashby recently tied the knot at the Three Cottages and the feedback couldn’t be more impressive. Wow, Wow, Wow! Myself and my now wife held our after-ceremony meal here for 25 guests. Nicky and her team were amazing, she worked with our ideas and we’ve got to say she did a fantastic job. The food was piping hot, deliciously tasty, presented lovely and served promptly. The team of waitresses all looked smart and were polite and engaging. The room looked amazing, all in all everything and more than we could have expected. Nicky and team take a bow. With over 10 years experience as a chef John and his kitchen team are more than equipped to cater for any pallet. Featuring re-worked classic English dishes, with creative and tasty
touches, you owe it to yourself to pop down and sample the menu! Bekah and I recently had our valentine’s meal at the pub, the seabass fillet with garlic crushed potatoes, green beans and tomato salsa was, well, let’s just say the plate was empty and my taste buds were happy. The Cottages front room is where your guests relax and enjoy a pint from their fine selection of cask marquee accredited beers, or a tipple from their amazing range of gins, whiskeys and spirits. Nicky and her team make a fuss of every guest and ensure no glass is left empty! So, if you are seeking a traditional venue with great service, a welcoming atmosphere, quality food and an array of beverages, then look no further than the Three Cottages.

Just another manic... March Words & images: Bekah Anstey
M
arch is always a very busy and tiring month for me with Young Enterprise, I have the Company Programme Competitions that take place in the Chesterfield Library and The Winding Wheel that I absolutely love, it is the highlight of my working year! It’s very exciting as the students get to experience a ‘Dragons Den’ style interview, the judges can be tough, but we all know the world of work is tough so let’s give these youngsters some real experiences. (I’m aware that by saying ‘these youngsters’ makes me sound extremely old) It’s a great way of developing some fantastic employability skills and also plants a seed to start their own business which I’m all for! The absolute highlight and most important event for me this month was the birth of my beautiful little niece Penelope. After a 30 minute labour (i'm not bitter about this at all compared to my 10 hours..) my sister Gracie and Uncle Jon Jon welcomed a healhy 5lb 1oz baby girl. I've had lots of lovely snuggles and I can't wait for our girls to grow up together. I had the absolute joy of ‘date night’ recently which ended up in me meeting a fab new friend from Bloom Beauty Room, catching up with some old ones and hardly speaking to Simon the whole evening, this is standard for us as we’re both social butterflies. We go out and spend all night meeting lots of new people, making friends and catching up. This ‘date night’ was vital for our health this month, we’ve been Page 6
working hard trying to get lots of lovely articles and news for you to read on top of our full-time jobs. A few real ales and an espresso martini from Liam at The Society of Coffee was exactly what we needed. Thanks Liam! It’s Florie’s birthday this month and we’ll be off to CBeebies land to celebrate, I did consider a big fancy party but thought it was a bit excessive seeing as she won’t have a clue what’s happening and as long as she has some broccoli, her family and possibly a few milk feeds thrown in she’ll be a happy girl (she absolutely loves broccoli) I can’t believe it’s been a year since the very horrific but rewarding day of ‘child birth’ Simon and I both shudder at the thought of the birthing pool and the first few nights at home. This month I’ve loved meeting lots of new people and finding out more about our S41 community and all it has to offer. It’s been good to hear from some of our regular advertisers and the amazing impact their adverts / articles have had on their business. I hope you enjoy this edition, please get in touch with some local hero nominations for next month! bekah@s41local.com

Simon Paterson Romance isn't dead!
Words & images: Simon Paterson
I
t doesn’t seem like two minutes since the last edition of S41 went to print, when in fact it has been five weeks! The last five weeks have been pretty awesome to be fair. Let me tell you about our valentine’s day, I’m sure all you couple’s with kids will relate! Bekah and I had a child free valentines evening! Now I always dread the run up to valentine’s day because, at times, Bekah is a bit of a control freak, which makes it impossible to plan a surprise or keep a secret. So, when I had booked a table at the Three Cottages on the 3rd February (take note lads; planning and preparation prevents poor performance), I had absolutely no chance of keeping it a secret until the 14th! By the 7th she had turned into the Spanish inquisition and was taking matters into her own hands! I had to come clean like a shop lifter caught bang to rights on camera, nicking four tubs of Quality Streets from the local shop at Christmas! #romanceisntdead. I did, however, manage to get a beautiful bouquet of roses delivered (by Bellissimi) to the restaurant without her knowledge, although it was noted all day that she must have missed the flower delivery, despite not leaving the house!
I had a delightful three course meal, the highlight of which was the pudding (of course), now I can’t remember what it was, but I know it was a chocolate sensation! Having multiple children and jobs, my memory is shot! After nailing all three courses I was ready for a snooze, In fact, Bekah had to drive because I would have had to stop half way for a kip, despite it only being a six minute journey. Needless to say, we were both back home for 9pm with our stomachs full and ready for bed, we are so rock and roll these days! I hope you have an amazing April. Peace, love and positivity Simon
The evening itself went well…for about 27 minutes until Eva called us on Nana’s phone wanting to know what time we would be back. I don’t know where she gets it from; I can’t wait till she’s a teenager! Please Mention S41 Local

Events to make your mouth water! Chesterfield's booming festival scene
Words & images: Simon Paterson & Edge Events
E
dge Events are a company passionate in delivering festivals which bring communities together through their shared love of food, drink and music! Two of these events take place in Chesterfield every Summer and I for one couldn't be any happier about this. Building on its success in 2018, the Street Food and Grooves Festival is back for a consecutive year. The festival is set to be filled with delicacies from around the globe, vegan treats, artisan beverages and of course, the best bands our town has to offer! As part of the event the New Market Place will be open with traders selling a plethora of sensations for the pallet including crepes, olives, and preserves, it would be rude not to indulge!
This year sees the innovative introduction of the ‘demo kitchen’. It is a platform for our talented local chefs to showcase their skills, demonstrating creative ways to cook fabulous dishes in front of a live audience! With ample seating space, be sure to pull up a chair in the sunshine and don’t forget your sun tan lotion! Not only will there be our very best home-grown talent on show, the superstar chef Lesley Waters will be taking to the demo kitchen on the Sunday followed by a meet and greet with us, the public, very cool!
“Last year’s festival had fantastic support with over 8,000 people attending over the weekend. We aim to keep growing this event by offering more and more choice of traders as well as activities to entertain every age group and to top it off it’s all free entry to everyone”. Laura, Edge Events. Kicking off on Friday the 10th May and not finishing until Sunday the 12th, with FREE ENTRY, we may all need to buy some bigger pants on the Monday! You’ll find me stuffing my face with some fantastic street food in one hand and a craft beer in the other, on the front row at the ‘soundbytes stage’ pretending I’ve still got it! Chesterfield Food & Drink Festival makes a welcome return and is shaping up to be the event of the summer. Kicking off on Friday 2nd August at 7pm, head over to Queens Park for another full weekend of music, craft beer, artisan gin, prosecco and of course the most wonderful selection of food from around the world!
Whilst you are basking in the British sunshine with a craft beer and some jerk chicken the kids will be thrilled to have their faces painted, to board the play bus, view the outdoor cinema and watch a variety of live acts on stage. This really is a festival for all the family. Ashgate Hospice will also be on site spreading the word about the wonderful work they do and how you can get involved. If you see a 40 year old tiger sat on a deck chair enjoying a craft beer, say hi, because it’s probably me!

Artist Business
Don't be blue!
Hannah 'bluish', cover artist Words: Simon Paterson & Hannah Wheeler Images: Hannah Bluish
H
annah is not only this month’s cover artist, she is part of the S40/S41 team, so what better place to showcase not only her visually inspiring illustrations, but her warm, funny and humble personality than our publication. Ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, I give you Hannah Bluish, S41 cover artist April 2019. Did you always want to be an artist? Yes... sort of. As a child I didn’t really understand that an artist wasn’t obliged to cut ears off and exclusively make money post death. If I’d have understood that an artist could be a product designer, graphic designer or children’s book illustrator then I know I would have been more onboard. What has been your favourite project to date? I am super pumped about the children's book I’m currently working on! I’m not the fastest illustrator in the world, but with this project I have given myself lots of lovely time to complete it and I know it’s the best I’m capable of. That’s always the aim isn’t it? To know you’ve given whatever you are trying to do, your absolute best - everyone wants that ‘Good Effort’ sticker from their imaginary teacher. How does your creative process start? If I get a sizeable commission then I allow some time for my brain to have a little party, then I go for a walk to calm down... during this walk I let my imagination run wild with all the possible ways I could approach the project. The creative thinking part of my job is so the reason I love it. Once my brain has gone on a curiosity voyage, I then start sketching. My initial sketches focus on composition and storytelling - they are completely unreadable to anyone but me. I then draft through the ideas until I’m happy to share them with the client. Page 14
What or who inspires you? There are a heap of female artists, Illustrator’s and writers out there who I admire and are just smashing it out the ball park. Katie Abey (@ katieabey) is probably number one on that list, she is an awesome business woman and inspirational creative. Not only that, but I love that she’s based in Alfreton! She gives me confidence that you don’t have to be in a creative centre or urban environment to thrive creatively. Kristyna Baczynski (@kbaczynski) is another wonder of geniuses, I envy her productivity levels as she produces such a high volume of work at a significant rate and it’s all just SO good! Finally, my close personal friend and collaborator Michelle Leeder (@chell_toliveandbreathe), this lady continually opens my mind to creativity, hope, activism, human truth and contentment. She writes the most beautifully compassionate blog called 'To Live and Breathe' which I would highly recommend. Also, podcasts, I listen to an unhealthy number of them. What’s your favourite holiday destination? Devon and Cornwall. I’d love to say somewhere more exotic, but the heart wants what it wants. We used to go down to the south west coast a lot when I was growing up and after relocating to the north as a kid that area became a reliable constant. Plus, it allows body board riding true self to live her best life! What would you be doing if you weren’t an artist? Gosh I do not know... I’m having to fight the urge to say I’d be unemployed. Let me workshop this out... I love being outside, I love the ocean and I also love acting... so maybe I could be one of the humans inside a Moana costume at Disneyland... yes, I’ll say that.

You are hosting a dinner party and can invite four guests. Past, present, dead or alive… who do you invite and what would you serve them? Firstly, my husband, I am an introvert so the idea of having four people in my house that I admire enough to potentially ‘RAISE THEM FROM THE DEAD’ would for sure cause me to have some panic-induced bodily reactions, without my husband there to extrovert the pants off the situation! Secondly, I would have to say Jesus. I love the guy a lot and would love to hear his take on Brexit etc…thirdly, Andy J Pizza. He is my favourite podcaster. Without his podcast Creative Pep Talk I would legit not be an illustrator, I would love to thank him for that. Fourthly, my brother... he lives in America and as we can’t afford to see him very often then this magical meal would be an opportunity too good to miss. He is truly one of the best humans I know, and I miss him. I would serve burritos as that’s my husband’s favourite.
You can give one piece of advice to your younger self as you are about to embark on your self-employed, Illustrator journey, what is it? Believe in yourself and know that you are exactly where you should be. We are avid followers of Hannah's instagram page and please head over to her ETSY store where you can buy your mother something unique and special this Mother's Day.

Where or how did you come up with your unique 'Bluish' style? Coming up with a ‘style’ has been the single hardest part of becoming an illustrator for me. I have a personality that means I like to merge and change to fit the environment around me, this can mean I have a hard time figuring out what is distinctive about my own approach. I have worked hard and truly it has just been through time and a tonne of practise that I have begun to find my style. I’m learning to honour my need to be more responsive and flexible though and have grown to embrace having a ‘vibe ‘rather than a set of rules to define my style.

Win a Bluebell photoshoot with Helen Rowan Words: Bekah Anstey Images: Helen Rowan Photography
Helen Rowan captures emotion, personality and the beauty of children that us amateurs can only dream of. Our children recently had a photo shoot with Helen who got in touch and gave me with an idea of what they should be wearing to fit in with their surroundings, this was pretty easy to work with. On arrival Helen was wonderful, she made the children feel at ease and talked to them about what she was going to do. Eva is confident and had no problem in posing for the camera, however this wasn’t what Helen was looking for. She was great at distracting Eva with a finger puppet and talking to her, which resulted in a more natural picture and really put Eva at ease. When it came to taking pictures of an elevenmonth-old it was never going to be easy. Helen knew exactly what she was doing! She was ready to get the shots the second I put Florie on Eva’s lap, the results were amazing! I am so pleased with the images and can’t wait to share them with my family as gifts for birthdays. This absolutely takes the pressure off when gift buying! Helen is very keen to get the youngsters of today involved in photography and to get Chesterfield’s budding photographers busy, she is running an amazing competition! Open to under 10s, the brief is simple. Take a picture that reflects Spring. We look forward to seeing your entries.

Opticians invest in new technology The Specsavers of the future!
S
pecsavers in Chesterfield has just invested £50,000 in 3D scanning technology which allows optometrists to view the eye in more detail than ever before.
The Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) machine, which will be available in late April for appointments, is a cutting-edge piece of equipment, usually found in hospital eye departments. It is used for a variety of functions including screening and management of conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. The technology produces a structural scan of the eye, including layers of the eye that would not normally be visible using traditional eye testing techniques. The results are similar to an ultrasound or MRI scan, in that it creates multiple scan slice images that are built up to form a total image. The OCT machine uses a totally safe, laser light source and not x-ray-type radiation.
The scan will be in addition to a thorough eye test, during which the optometrist will use a range of clinical tests and procedures to measure the quality of someone’s vision, as well as taking an overview of the health and function of their eyes and how they work together. The OCT scan takes just a few seconds and is non-contact and painless. A customer’s OCT images will be stored on file to help note changes over time – a real benefit to the monitoring of overall eye health. OCT scans are additional to the normal eye test and can be requested when the appointment is booked or when the customer arrives in store. The cost of this scan (£10) is in addition to the eye test and not covered by the NHS examination.
Chesterfield’s Optometrist Partner, Allissa Charlesworth comments:
"This investment gives our team the ability to enhance the services to the local community by identifying and helping to detect or manage conditions, with a level of diagnostic capability which previously would have needed a hospital visit'. OCT technology produces such a detailed picture of the structures in the eye that it allows us to identify signs of diseases years earlier than traditional methods. An example of this is glaucoma, which our Optometrist team are specially trained to spot. Given that nearly half of all sight loss is preventable*, the sooner we can detect these conditions, the sooner we can help manage them or refer people for treatment."

Generation smile :) Bringing joy to our elderly across the UK Words: Bekah Anstey Images: Astra Designs
S
amba Smile Project - bringing smiles to residents in care homes across the UK!
I recently met up with Garry from Diverse Recruitment who sponsors a local children’s club called Samba Sports. He told me how his little boy Alfie had been going for some time and absolutely loved it, they had recently gone into a local care home to meet with the residents, get them moving and of course put a Samba Smile on everyone’s faces. I just had to find out more about this intergenerational social action project and share it with our readers! Samba Smile instils skills and qualities in your children that really are invaluable, they bring generations together by working in partnership with schools and care homes. Not only do Samba Smile put a huge smile on everyone’s faces but they also encourage mobility and enhance cognition by challenging the mind and instilling confidence.
The Samba Smile project was set up by Brad Jones, Carl Vickers and Ben Towmsend - Directors of Samba Sports Coaching.
"Our vision was to create a project that brought the community together. Samba Smile does exactly that. We have worked hard to design a scheme of work to cater the needs for both children and elderly residents by delivering a fun integrated sports session which has many rewarding benefits for both age groups” Brad Jones - Director So next comes Samba Tots – this runs on a Saturday morning at Chesterfield College, It is aimed at 2-4 year olds and develops balance, co-ordination and agility. They play lots of fun games and sports to music, which all the children love – especially when waka waka comes on! If you want to pop down and see what it is all about then definitely get in touch for a free taster session.
The project is designed so that children of all abilities develop skills that can support their education and home life. It allows them to develop skills at their own pace.

F
ollowing the release of her brand new album ‘Always In Between’, featuring the hits ‘I’ll Be There’ and ‘Thursday’, Jesse Glynnes first outdoor show kicks off at Doncaster Racecourse on Saturday 18th May. S40 & S41 Local have a pair of tickets to give away to our readers, courtesy of MP Promotions. ‘I always used to think that you’re nobody until somebody loves you,’ says Jess Glynne, singer, star, voice of the street. ‘Now I know that you have to be that person for yourself.’ She smiles as she says it. ‘It’s been a right old journey getting here, I can tell you.’ In her first few years Jess has carved out a unique slot all of her own. Where others were contemplating the aftermath of heartach, she was always about standing on your own two feet. At the start of 2018, she listened back to her, just completed, second album, Always in Between. Like her blockbuster debut album, I Cry When I Laugh, Jesses new album brokers the hinterlands between pop, soul, R&B and house music. When she looks at the statistics that have marked her sky-rocketing career so far, there is a look of mild disbelief on the face of Jess Glynne, as if this might have happened to someone else. I Cry When I Laugh is one of the defining British pop records of its era. At the time of writing this article it's been a chart staple for 138 weeks. It debuted at number one, spawning 12million worldwide singles sales, 39 weeks on the UK top 10, 2.5billion Spotify streams, a sold out UK arena tour, Brit, MTV: EMA, Ivor Novello, MOBO, Q and Glamour award nominations. Page 24
Jess Glynne is a girl from North London who is noticeably free of airs and graces. The stardust she’s gathered surprises no-one more than Jess herself. She sings because she loves to and writes songs because she wants answers to her own emotional quandaries. Her powerhouse vocal and fearless delivery has captured so many under its spell. But for Jess, this was all just about learning who she is as a person. ‘I don’t write songs because I want a hit,’ she says. ‘I never have and I never will. I want to make a great album, that’s it.’ Jess Glynne has found peace through music. ‘I’m in a great place now,’ she says. ‘I felt like I was in between a normal life and a famous life, this or that relationship, and it’s felt at times like I was lost.’ With age, comes understanding. Over the last couple of years Jess has learned one of life’s vital lessons and put it all into her second record. ‘It wasn’t that I was lost, at all. It was about learning to love myself.’ For an action packed day out, why not celebrate a day of racing with friends and family, before dancing the night away with Jess Glynne in concert to finishing off a perfect Summer’s evening. This is a gig not to be missed… To enter the giveaway please see details opposite or if you can't wait and need your own you can purchase tickets as below. Film
Stand up!
On the set with Kai Undrell Words: Simon Paterson Images: Undrell Films
I
am, or was, a movie buff, so you can imagine my excitement when 18 year old Kai Undrell, local film maker and student at Chesterfield College, called to invite us to the set of his new short film, ‘Stand Up’, for an interview! I arranged to go and see ‘Stand Up’ being filmed at The Avenue night club, where cast members and crew were filming a scene. Kai gives me a quick overview of the film “The lead character is a troubled, loathsome comedian called Daniel Lawrence. He is making a big return to stand-up comedy
after an emotional breakdown. His manager is somewhat of a tyrant which makes for an interesting dynamic." The script, by Kai, was initially 92 pages long however, Harry Bracken, the Assistant Director, said “never gonna happen, that’s a one-anda-half-hour feature film with no budget, let’s be realistic here, so Stand-Up will be a 40 minute short film”. "It’s important to have someone keeping things realistic and putting me in my place, we work really well together" said Kai. I was interested to find out more about Kai and the film… Have you always had an interest in film? “Ever since I can remember, from a very young age, I would watch films repeatedly, it was pretty much my life. Over-time it progressed into a desire to work in the industry in any capacity possible. Surprisingly none of my family have a passion for films so I have always felt a like a bit of an odd ball. My father is into DIY and my mother and sister love the outdoors, I’m good with my movies!” What made you pursue a career in film making? “Well, I am pretty rubbish at everything else but seem to be OK at this, or so I've been told! It’s the only thing that causes a spark and ignites a passion in me. I get an adrenaline rush from almost every part of the production process. To paraphrase Stanley Kubrick: The scariest feeling in the world is when you are about to walk into the studio for a shoot, and the greatest feeling is releasing a film into the world!” What roadblocks have you faced? “Still being in college carries the stigma of being a student film maker, and it’s hard to disassociate yourself from that and you can be quite overlooked by the industry, but I believe I am at the fore-front of independent film makers and this will change soon enough. Working independently, you aren’t attached to any major production company so you’re standing on your
Page 28
www.s41local.com
own two feet. This has advantages, but can also leave you a little bit stranded, there’s only you to build the life-boat! “The cast and crew are amazing and work so hard, because they believe that the independent film industry needs to be kept alive. In the modern film industry, there is no middle ground between a huge budget and no budget, you’ve either got it or you haven’t. It has always been very a dog eat dog industry and a thousand good moves can be over shadowed by one bad move, you have to be careful…but nothing ground breaking was ever produced without taking a few risks!” When do you anticipate the film will be released and where can we watch it? “We can’t release the film until after the round of film festivals where you need your own premier, so it’s difficult to say, but please keep an eye on my YouTube channel Undrell Films and our social media pages as I post any updates there. I have couple of short films in there already, in fact one of them was filmed at West Studios, where your office is!” The team were just packing up after a long day on set, but I managed to accost Steve Dolton, the male lead in the film to ask him a few questions. Steve, what’s it like working with Kai? “It’s great, he’s young enough not to be cynical!” jokes Steve.
“He is on a creative path and has lots of talent, so I knew this would be interesting to do. Some of the best work I’ve done is with new directors, they’re not inhibited by the constraints of the business. He has his eye on the game and his originality will see him go far.” Which filmmaker has influenced you the most? Steve: “Dustin Hoffman has been a big influence and of course the Cohen Brothers are magnificent. Local director (Nottingham) Shane Meadows is a favourite but so far, he has managed to miss working with me.”. Kai: “I am obsessed with the horror genre so, Carpenter and Cronenberg have a big influence on me. I also love the way Tarantino constructs his characters and the dialogue he writes, well…” "We are pitching Stand-Up personally to potential investors (production companies and/or funding bodies) toward the end of this year, with the idea of expanding it into a feature-length film!" Ok so last question: you are having a dinner party and can invite one person each, dead or alive, who do you invite? Steve: “Neil Young what a singer songwriter he is…” Kai: “One million percent David Bowie!” Simon: Wow neither of you picked an actor or director, maybe you should start careers in music!

Spital Arts
An evening to remember Words: Bekah Anstey Images: Spital Arts
S
pital Arts are a dedicated team of people who deliver a variety of events that focus on creativity, community spirit and above all friendship. I was lucky enough to be invited to one of their events, an evening of Flamenco performed by the very talented Alma Gitana. The show was set in St Leonards Mission Church, a beautiful old building dating back as far as the 1895, from the outside you would never know the vigour of life held from within its walls. From the moment I walked in I instantly felt at home. I was greeted with a smile and taken to my seat, front row no less! Ollie and Marc, two of the organisers, are clearly experts in event management, they ensured the gig ran smoothly and most of all had lots of energy.
Now, Flamenco is not something I would have normally gone for, I’ve never really experienced it other than in a hotel bar in Spain on the odd occasion and even then, I would have been chasing around a toddler (Simon, aged 39). From the moment Alma Gitana came out I was mesmerised. The crowd fell completely silent as the music started and we were taken on a journey to Spain! Lourdes Fernandez’s dancing was so inspiring that I wanted to quit my job and start a career as a Flamenco dancer, well, for an hour or so anyway. As the show progressed so did the crowd participation, everyone was clapping along, tapping their toes and shouting their best ‘ole’. I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish and cannot recommend it enough. During the interval Elizabeth was on hand to help guests and is the chief cake maker, thanks Elizabeth, the lemon cake was sublime (I’ll be back for seconds). This has enthused me to attend something new every month to expand my horizons, gain new experiences and make memories, after all, that’s all we really are, a collection of memories and I made a some good ones at Spital Arts! Spital Arts have a few performances coming up that you should get your tickets for:

S41 Local Hero
Andy Bell
Disability Tennis Ambassador Words: Simon Paterson Images: Chesterfield Lawn Tennis Club
This month’s S41 Local Hero is a bit of a buddy of mine, so I was dead chuffed for him when he was nominated. Andy Bell isn’t just any old tennis coach, he is the 'Derbyshire Disability Tennis Coach of the year' and because of his hard work and dedication, Chesterfield Lawn Tennis Club have won the Disability Tennis Programme of the year award. Andy has won this award before, in fact, he has won it for four years in a row and I for one feel this needs shouting about, very loudly, so the whole of Chesterfield can hear it! Andy has been an important member of the coaching team for well over ten year’s now. During his time, he has introduced 100’s of individuals of all ages and abilities to the wonderful sport of tennis and the fantastic community that comes along with it.
I joined the club in 2015 after a twenty-year hiatus from the sport. Andy was the first person that spoke to me on my return, he’s the first person that speaks to everyone at the club, he is a natural people person, a natural communicator who always has a smile on his face, even in January when it’s cobbing it down, he will always shout “ay-up”. Andy has played a huge part in the management of the clubs coaching programmes over the years, none more so than the disability tennis programme. Andy’s leadership has seen the programme grow exponentially over the past few years. Every session he delivers is fully inclusive and tailored to everyone. He understands the complex needs of all his pupils and accommodates them perfectly. This summer, as a result of her hard-work, dedication and talent, local girl Sophie Widdowson will represent Great Britain in the Special Olympics as part of their team. Andy’s disability tennis programme has provided Sophie with this amazing platform. Sophie, we will interview you very soon and go get ‘em girl. Andy Bell you are this month’s S41 Local Hero, take a bow my friend!

Geek is the new black! Meet Astra Designs UK Words: Bekah Anstey Images: Astra Designs
Astra Designs UK are a wonderful boutique clothing brand that create unique designs of clothes and accessories for all ages but specialise in ‘geek’ fashion. From the first idea to the last stitch it’s all created in house by Danielle. The venture began in December 2018 in Chesterfield, Danielle wanted to share her love of handmade clothes with other locals. Business took off and Danielle now supplies pieces all over the world! From Superman bow ties to Harry Potter twirl skirts, Danielle has a design and crazy fabric to suit you! I popped in to see Danielle the owner and this is what she had to say: ‘Current trends are showing that the twirl skirt is extremely fashionable, it is popular with all ages but particularly with customers that have an interest in comic conventions. I have created lots of designs for the London Film and Comic Con and even got to meet some celebrities at my last visit’ ‘I am very keen to upcycle and love it when a customer brings in some old bed sheets or curtains and wants me to make it into an item of clothing. These often end up being the most amazing fashion pieces! You can see some recent ones on my Instagram account’
Page 34
Danielle is a very experienced clothes designer, her passion started at the age of 6 when she would watch her Grandma make clothes for her Aunties. Her family are very creative, the finer details she mastered from her Mum, Auntie Margaret and Auntie Annette. These ladies taught her the tricks of the trade and have motivated Danielle to become the entrepreneur she is today. Not only does Danielle run her business, make all the clothes singlehandedly, but she’s also a mum to four beautiful children, who I have no doubt are very proud of their mother (and get to showcase the most amazing outfits!) Astra Designs are located on Station Road, Whittington Moore, so why not pop in for a chat and together you can create something special!

The lid is then screwed on and the bottle is used as a building brick, brilliant! Ecobricks enable us to take personal responsibility for our plastic and are great to make with your kids, teaching them about the importance of recycling and how we can all make a difference, by making small changes! Ecobricking is a simple but brilliant solution to the world’s crisis. As a species we are producing and consuming more plastic than ever before. The UK alone produces over 3.7 million tonnes of plastic per year, a lot of which cannot be recycled! Plastic is an incredible material with many positive properties that make it ideal for building with, so why let it go to waste?
With ecobicks we have the chance to put the positive qualities of plastic that were once so problematic – longevity, durability to good and green use! With a little creativity and smidgen of imagination ecobricks can be used to build almost anything!
People all around the globe are using ecobricks to build furniture, gardens, walls, sheds, art and even houses!
Making an ecobrick is fairly straightforward. They can be made by children, adults and the elderly. There are no special skills required, just the desire to make a positive difference to the environment.
HOW TO: ECO Bricks • One 2 litre plastic. The same shape as a coke bottle. • One large stick, for poking the plastic into the bottle.
• Collate plastic ready poking: laminated paper, photographs, polystyrene trays, plastic fruit punnets, silvery packets (crisps chocolate), PET trays, wax paper, food bags and supermarket plastic bags can all be used. • Twist plastic before inserting in bottle. This makes it easier to poke in. • Slip your twisted waste into the bottle and poke down with your stick.
• Fill the bottle to the brim with your plastic waste. This may take several weeks. • Weigh the bottle. An ecobrick should weight at least 500g to be at the correct density for building with. • Celebrate your completed ecobrick, but don’t get too attached to it! • Sign up to ecobricks.org and download the app. • Enter your location into the app and it will direct you to the nearest drop off point.
• Alternatively create your own ecobrick community in your school, community centre, club, church etc.
For more information on ecobricks please go to ecobricks UK on Facebook or www. ecobricks.org
Your first ecobrick is the most important and sets the standard for a lifetime of ecobricking. Substandard ecobricks compromise the quality of the finished construction. We have a step by step guide for you to follow which will ensure your ecobricks are of the highest quality. So let’s get started shall we? 36 Page 40

A CALL TO ACTION Are you involved with a local school as parent, student, teacher or faculty member? If the answer is yes, then we implore you to start an ecobrick community within the school. Not only will it educate the students on the plastics crisis our planet is facing, it enables them to take action!
Ecobricks can be used to create chairs, tables and a variety of garden furniture. With many schools struggling for funding, ecobricks are a great way of replacing old furniture whilst being environmentally conscious. Not only will it educate the students on the plastics crisis our planet is facing, it enables them to take action! We’d love to see your completed ecbricks so please do post photos on the S40 Local Facebook page.

Business Music
Life on the road
Up and coming band Clear Vinyl Words: Jennie Sim Images: Clear Vinyl
T
his months story starts at the Post Office on Chatsworth Road, as usual I was met with amazing service and all round pleasantries in the form of local business owner Terry - what a legend. Nothing is ever too much trouble for Terry, he always makes you feel like you are the most important customer of the day. On this particular visit Terry drops into conversation that he has a new-found pastime - Roadie... His son Jonjo and pals James, Josh, Jack and Sam who I feel should be called Jam, just to continue with the J theme, make up the band Clear Vinyl, I was keen to catch up with them between their UK tour dates to discuss what the future holds, recommendations on local restaurants and gossip that make's for a good read. With my name being Jennie I am also thinking there could be hope for me yet in the music industry joining the J posse although I’m not sure triangle quite fits the band profile; ting! The band formed two years ago after Josh, James and Jonjo, met Jack and Sam and decided to take things a little more seriously. Jennie - So Lads, you are touring all over the country now, will you be playing in Chesterfield? Sam: We’ve not actually played Chesterfield, it’s definitely on our radar! Josh: Playing your hometown is a big thing for most bands, it will be a big one when it happens! Being on the road so much you must get home stupidly late? Where do you get your late night naughty food fix? Jack: Best Kebab - decent cheesy chips Sam: Pizza Royale, BBQ Chicken pizza with garlic mayo Josh: LFC Chicken Strips, chips with chilli Jennie: Based on the fact I rarely see past 10pm these days I cannot comment, but the recommendations are there for those of you in need of that naughty late night food fix. Page 38
Have you ever had any random objects thrown at you on stage from admirers? Sam: Not yet but if anyone wants to, I wouldn’t mind being thrown a beer, gets a bit warm on stage Jennie: Not sure you have thought that through Jam, an unopened beer is an exploding missile waiting to happen. Talking of admirers .... Valentine’s day has just passed were there any romantic meals out for two and if so where? Josh: Bottle and Thyme was good on Valentine’s Day, Awesome food and such a great choice Jennie : Great Vegan options also! Jonjo: Soulville Steak house is amazing, love it in there! Jennie: Not so great Vegan options ha ha ha You are stuck in a lift, chose one person to be stuck with. James: Jennifer Lawrence Jonjo: 100% my dog Sam: Louis Theroux and his wry smile Jack: gotta be James Josh: Joe Lycett Jennie: At this point I am wondering what Jonjo's dog is called - surely it begins with the letter J? Still stuck in the lift ,we can get a takeout to you - where would this be from? Jonjo: Mutiara restaurant Jennie; Mutiara a great Malaysian restaurant on West Bars offers a varied menu to dine in or takeaway. Sam: Zahid Indian! The curries are amazing! Jennie; Zahid Indian Cuisine, Chatsworth road has a four star review on trip advisor, 4.6 out of 5 on google, this recommendation I will definitely be following up on. Josh: Davis fresh bake - Katie and Guy who run

the place are absolutely amazing and I recommend the pork sandwiches .... maybe not for you Jennie. Jennie: Davis fresh bake, located on Elder way and run by husband and wife team Guy and Katie, everything baked fresh in store by Guy! They also cater for large events and functions with their amazing baked goods. What is your biggest achievement to date? Josh: Playing a sold out Leadmill gig with Fatherson and Vistas, the biggest highlight so far. Amazing seeing so many new faces with people on shoulders during our set! Jennie: From what I have seen on facebook it looked amazing...sweaty...but amazing. When you are not touring where do you hang out? James: Warehouse Rehearsal studios on Chatsworth Road. We are always writing and demoing new material. We never stop. Jack: Junction, Bottle and Thyme, Einstein’s. Jennie: Einsteins gets browney points - since opening in 2015 they have opened its doors to the elderly, homeless and less fortunate on Christmas day. Einsteins offer a great varied menu to match their extensive drinks offerings.

We all need an eight year old to answer those questions that we find too hard. Well why not ask Eva? Eva is our resident agony girl, she offers a unique viewpoint and impartial advice on the things that matter to you. Eva has over 8 year’s life experience and a wealth of knowledge in a variety of areas, such as playground politics, tea time, relationships and bed time (never admit you are tired). You can write in to Eva using the email below and remember; a problem shared is a problem halved.

Well I know one special little girl who has done just that! Lilly Roper has had her hair cut to send to The Little Princess Trust to be made into wigs for children with cancer. Now writing this story actually brings a tear to my eye as I don’t know many adults that would consider doing this, never mind a 6 year old! Lilly lost her grandad recently to cancer and she really wanted to help others and make a difference. Lilly has raised over £1,000 in memory of her grandad Paul Roper which is astounding. Well done Lilly on your fantastic achievement your family are so proud of you!

Can you solve the easter themed puzzle below to be in with a chance of winning a free game at ESC? Here at the [ESC] pad we're a big fan of Easter, not least of which because of the amount of chocolate it's acceptable to have for breakfast! I may have gone a little overboard this year though, so I gave half my eggs and a half an egg to my son, half the remainder plus half an egg to my girlfriend, half the new remainder plus half an egg to her nephew and half of what was left over plus half an egg to my neighbour. This left me with exactly one egg.
Q) If I didn't break any eggs how many did I start with? We had the winners of the first issue's puzzle, Scrambled Legs, come to play last month and they have set an impressive pace to beat, escaping in just 42 minutes. Each month I'll update the S41 leaderboard, so why not have a crack at the egg puzzle above to see if you can top the table. The answer to last months puzzle is: Person 1 Person 2 Person 3
