I
don’t know how we got to April already? It feels like yesterday we were sat opening presents for Eva’s birthday in December, I say ‘we’, however all parents know that whenever presents are involved adults never get a look in. Even on my Birthday, Mother’s Day or any other special occasion, my cards and presents are now opened by Eva. Even my birthday candles are blown out by my eldest! I don’t mind though as the joy she gets is worth every bit. So, we had Florie’s 1st birthday and yes, you guessed it, Eva helped her open her presents. Florie didn’t really have a clue what was going on and was more fussed about what Zack (crazy springer spaniel) was doing, and what he was having for his breakfast (it’s always dog biscuits). Eva however, had a lovely time playing with Florie’s new kitchen and all her toys. We had a nice relaxing day pottering and a meal at The Three Cottages with all the family, not forgetting the amazing cake by ‘cakes by bobbies’ den’. We decided to take the girls to CBeebies land to celebrate which was lovely, we ended up spending most of the day either in a queue for a ride with Eva or entertaining
Page 6
Florie whilst waiting. I think that’s pretty standard when you’re a family of four.
We are now onto edition five of S41 Local and I feel like it is getting a little easier, we’re getting some fantastic responses from our community and lots of local independent businesses are getting in touch for support. This makes me very happy as it’s one of our motivations for doing the magazine. We want to make a difference! My highlights for this month are celebrating Florie’s 1st birthday, helping Eva make a brilliant (even if I do say so myself) school project based on the ‘Stone age’ (it was our first big school project and I absolutely loved it as did Eva) and getting back into running. I used to run a lot but after having Florie, starting back at work and launching the magazine there has been no time for anything. So now I’m making time and although it’s very challenging I’m persisting as it has such a huge impact on my mood. If I don’t exercise, I can get very grumpy, I’m sure Simon will agree with that statement. I hope you all have a wonderful May and are looking forward to some time off this summer, especially the kids! www.s41local.com

Simon Paterson Life begins at 30!

A
generation, my friends, peers and family.
The past five years I have really found myself as a person. I developed an unquenchable thirst for skills, experience and above all knowledge. I secured a fantastic role as the Project Manager for the National Citizen Service which enables me to make a positive difference to the lives of others on a large, but still, very local scale. I no longer work solely for financial gain and do not feel the pressure or need to prove my worth based on money and status, as a person's value can only be measured by the way they treat others. Long after you are gone nobody will remember what you said, or even what you did, but they will remember how you made them feel. I learnt this after the passing of my uncle Phil, no-one ever listened to a word he said, but if you mention his name to anyone who knew him, as sure as the sun will rise in the morning, a smile stretches over their face.
Bekah, ‘Behind every good man is a great woman’. Before I met Bekah, I was a typical lad living for the weekend and partying like it’s 1999, acting like I still had hair! I thought I was living a full and rewarding life, how wrong was I! Bekah’s support has enabled me to me embrace change and has presented me with several opportunities that I said yes to, that have had a huge impact on me both professionally and personally. For this I am beyond grateful, you make me want to be a better man! I have grown more as person in the last five year’s than I did in the previous 15!
t the time of writing this I am in my 30’s, when it comes back from print, I will be in my 40’s! I’m not sure how I feel about this, as my 30’s have been very good to me, or maybe I’ve been good them!
My need to purchase ‘stuff’ I don’t really need has all but gone and has been replaced with a sense of adventure and a desire to help others less fortunate than myself. I have gone from being mentored to be a mentor for the younger
I am blessed with a large and fantastic group friends, who I don't see enough of as life gets in the way, just know that I love you all and I am here should you ever need me.
I have always said If I grow up to be half the man my father is, I am doing ok. My father is the greatest living Englishman, he’s 67 year’s old and recently went volunteering in Ghana. He donates a good percentage of his pension to charity and helps run the homeless meal, what a guy! People are a product of their environment and mine couldn’t be any better. So, to all those who have been a positive influence on me past and present I salute you, you have my eternal gratitude… Here’s to the next 40 year’s...

Meet this month's cover Artist, Sophie Cartmell Words: Sophie Cartmell & Bekah Anstey Images: Sophie Cartmell
Did you always want to be an artist? When I was seven, I wanted to be an archaeologist – I had a great interest in finding fossils and ‘treasure’ which I’d hide away somewhere secret, and then take out to admire, occasionally! I have a lot of those ‘treasures’ today, but more in the form of children’s books (we have hundreds!) and nostalgic toys from the 80s and 90s. I trained to be a dancer when I left school, and then went on to work in the television industry in London, until I became a Mum in 2012.It was then that I discovered a love of creativity and art in a way I hadn’t felt before. I took up drawing, sewing, watercolour painting, anything I could lay my hands on really! I went back to university and did a Master of Arts degree in Visual Communication at Derby University and have been building on my artistic style and skills since then.
What is your favourite bespoke piece of art to date? Quite honestly, the front cover for S41 Magazine has been the most fun I’ve had creating an illustrative piece of work in a long time! I don’t tend to do a lot of bespoke work and instead create art more for printing in the form of greetings cards and art prints. I did a commission a little while ago where a client wanted me to do a set of illustrations for his wife’s birthday of their daughter, which was lovely to do. Apparently, she cried (happy tears I hope!) when she received the gift. It’s special to know that they’ll have my work in their home for many years to come.
How does your creative process start? An idea will come to me, often in the dead of night as I can be a bit of an insomniac and I’ll mull it over and make a note in my phone, so I don’t forget it. My phone is full of random words, ideas and phrases that I come up with and go back to when I want to create something. When I start a piece of art, I’ll do a very basic pencil sketch on a piece Page 14
of paper and then go over it with a fine ink pen. I work digitally a lot of the time these days, so I scan my inked image in to my computer and then work on it until I’m happy with it. I have to work quickly and tend not to overthink what I’m doing too much as I have to fit my work in with looking after my 18 month old daughter at the moment too… luckily I like to keep busy!
What or who inspires you? Spending time with my kids inspires me, as it opens my eyes to things I might skim over as an adult. We notice nature, the changing seasons, we observe the various celebrations throughout the year – Easter, Halloween, Bonfire Night, Christmas etc… We believe in magic and we look for elves, imps and fairies when we go out for walks. I love my elder daughter Freya’s imagination, there’s nothing like the mind of a child to elevate the mundanity of the day to day. There’s something to be discovered around every corner which is so lovely to see, and it also means that I stop to notice more of what’s going on around me too! Artists that inspire me… where to start. I can’t not mention Quentin Blake – his ability to capture so much character in his illustrations using such a sketchy technique is amazing. Oliver Jeffers and Jon Klassen are two of my favourites who inspired me greatly when I was first getting in to children’s literature, as Freya and I discovered reading together as soon as she was old enough to sit up and focus on a book. One of my other all-time favourites in Jan Pienkowski, more commonly recognised as the illustrator for Meg and Mog books, but it’s his earlier silhouetted fairy-tale work that I’m more interested in - it’s just beautiful. I’m massively into animation and highly rate Hey Duggee, Peppa, Pig and Ben & Holly’s Little Kingdom on Cbeebies, which obviously I’ve had to watch a lot of over the years with both my girls and can honestly say I enjoy all of them!
www.s41local.com
What’s your favourite holiday destination? It’s got to be Spain because I love the climate, the food and drink and have a lot of happy memories of spending time there. I really love tapas. I’d like to learn to speak Spanish – it’s on my list of to-dos! We’re going there for our holidays this summer and I can’t wait. I did Camp America when I was 18 and have spent a bit of time travelling the USA, which I loved. I’d like to take Freya to New York at Christmas time one year if I can. It looks magical at that time of year.
to her show on Radio 2 on a Saturday night and cooking dinner with a glass of wine. To eat, we’ll start with a prawn cocktail served with lashings of marie rose sauce, lettuce, brown bread and butter and some chips to share too. We’ll move on to a Thai Green Curry served with sticky jasmine rice and crackers. For pudding we’ll have banoffee pies followed by a hearty ploughman’s platter, all washed down with as much wine and laughs as we can fit in.
What would be doing if you weren’t an artist? I’d go back to university to train to be an animator, horticulturalist or do a history degree, or a fine art degree and be an antiques collector and go on the Antiques Roadshow. Can I do all of them? But actually, I love what I do and I’m very happy being an artist and really enjoy it. I’m planning to train as a yoga teacher before too long, as I love yoga - it’s good for the spirit and the body. Yoga and art – what a lovely combination!
You are hosting a dinner party and can invite 4 guests. Past, present, dead or alive… who do you invite and what would you serve them? Apart from my very close family I would choose: Jack Lemon – Some Like It Hot is one of my favourite films and I reckon he’d be up for a laugh over a glass of champers and the vol au vent’s. Melissa McCarthy can come because she’s utterly hilarious and her films always make me laugh. James Acaster is welcome to the table too, as his dry and off-the-wall sense of humour makes me laugh constantly when I watch his stand up show on Netflix… I’m going to see him in Sheffield in June – I’ll pass on his invite then Finally, Liza Tarbuck can join us, as my happy time is listening
Sophie’s cards and art can be purchased at:

Famliy dining the easy way! Less stress more fun Words: Jennie Sim Images: Jennie Sim
I
t’s Saturday somewhere between breakfast and lunch and you decide eating out would be a great family activity!
Everyone should still be full-ish from breakfast, but bordering on starting to get peckish so, you figure the timing will work, where do you go?
If like me you walk into a dining establishment looking like you are about to board a short haul flight - bag on wheels full, and I mean FULL of entertainment for the kids, then you will understand the venue dissection that goes through my mind when choosing where to eat when a 'family dining out' opportunity arises. Let’s be honest about this - A family dining out experience to me is not having to think about what to cook, be waited on and hopefully manage to get a whole conversation started AND finished with the hubby while the kids are entertained.... if there’s a glass of wine involved then that's an absolute bonus! There will always be the numerous toilet trips, of course they can never need it at the same time but at least we are out enjoying a meal and 'family time'.
Page 18
Local and quick
The newly named Willow Springs Pet & Play Centre (formerly known as Brook aquatics centre) is right up there for a weekend breakfast, brunch or lunch out with the family. On entrance you get to look at all of the animals & fish, this can take a good 30 minutes so plan your visit and hunger levels to allow for this or manage expectations prior to arriving so that you can walk round afterwards in the case your stomach is already rumbling. They offer an extensive menu which also caters for Vegan and Gluten free, the children's menu is great and good value and service is relatively quick even on the busiest of times. For toddlers there is an inside soft play area free to use whilst dining and for everyone else after eating you can play a game of ring toss (free), crazy golf or ride on their go karts (fee applicable). Willow Springs also has great plans for the summer adding in a trampoline section and huge indoor beach so give them a follow-on Facebook for all of their latest updates.

Venturing out
Escaping town for country air we head to Darwin Forest and the Foresters restaurant which is nestled in 47 acres of woodland on the outskirts of Matlock. No need for a bag on wheels here, the kids are given crayons and an activity sheet as soon as we enter and if dining outside, they can always play on the adventure playground. The menu is varied with lighter bite options and the children well catered for with a roast dinner available on a Sunday.
Once you have exhausted all the viewpoints, picnic spots and endless photo opportunities why not continue on to Hathersage and visit Hathersage social club. This place is a hidden gem offering a daytime cafĂŠ, evening restaurant and minicinema. They have a beautiful riverside garden great for brunch and during peak months offer entertainment during select times. The summer months are on their way and me and my crew will most definitely be making the most out of our family time together!
After dining and always feeling overly full a stroll around the forest following the outdoor exercise obstacles always goes down well and helps the pudding, you shouldn't have had, go down!
Making a day of it
Sundays are always great for venturing further afield turning a 'family dining experience' into a Family day out and Surprise view in the Peak district has to be our favourite spot at the moment. Keira Knightley was famously snapped here windswept at one of the points, longing for her beloved Mr Darcy in the film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. Some of the rocks have taken on the forms of animal heads .... or so we think so, (great game no wheely bag needed), keep your eye out for the snake head or turtle. It is known as one of the best spots to watch the sunset‌ or picnic and drink hot chocolate on one of the many boulders.

It’s not just for Comic Relief! Kilimanjaro. Words & Images: Denise Glover
D
enise Glover is a GP who mainly sits at her desk and has never done any long-distance hill walking but in July 2018, she decided to climb a mountain, Kilimanjaro. Below Denise shares her story with us.
I read a story about John Goddard who, in 1940 at the age of 15, made a list of 127 things he wanted to achieve in his lifetime. Climbing Kilimanjaro was on his list. After hearing about his story, I thought that climbing Kilimanjaro was something I could do despite the fact that I had never hiked or camped outdoors before. I would literally be starting from ‘the sofa to Kilimanjaro’ and I reasoned that, since it required no ‘technical skills’ to climb, I would be able to reach the summit.
"There’s a lot if information about Kilimanjaro online. I discovered that it was a dormant volcano in Tanzania with 3 volcanic cones 'Kibo', 'Mawenzi' and 'Shira'. It’s the highest mountain in Africa with a height of 5,895 metres above sea level, for comparison Mount Everest is 8,850 metres above sea level. It’s the highest free-standing mountain in the world as it’s not part of a mountain range and is one of the seven summits. Because Mount Kilimanjaro is such a large geographical structure it creates its own weather, which ranges from hot to bitterly cold. It’s said that climbing it is like travelling from the equator to Antarctica in a matter of days. Approximately 30,000 climbers and 80,000 porters hike up each year and approximately 10 deaths are reported each year (some say it could be two to three times higher). The main cause of death is altitude sickness, which I was really worried about.
People The weather system on Kilimanjaro varies depending on what month you travel. January to March are the warmest months, March to June is the rainy season so not recommended for inexperienced climbers, June to October it is colder and November to December sees a short rainy season. I decided to climb in January due to the comparative warmth over other months. When hiking up Kilimanjaro you pass through 5 different climate zones; Cultivation - 800 to 1800m Rainforest - 1800 to 2800m Heather/Moorland - 2800 to 4000m Alpine Desert - 4000 to 5000m Arctic - 5000m plus
There are seven established routes up Mount Kilimanjaro - Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Shira, Rongai, Northern Circuit and Umbwe. The Marangu, Machame, and Umbwe routes all approach from the south of the mountain (Mweka is only used for descents). Success in reaching the summit depends on the route and the number of days it takes to acclimatize. I chose the eight day Lemosho Route, this includes the first night in a hotel. The Lemosho
Page 24
route is described as the more scenic route with a high success rate, I chose a private trek because I thought it would be tailored to my needs. A private trek includes a guide and seven porters to carry your equipment needed for the trek. Preparation: I walked locally around Curbar Edge and part of the Monsal Trail. I climbed Mam Tor a few times and Thorpe cloud once. Three months before I climbed, I used two different personal trainers who devised an exercise program for the climb and I also used the dreaded step machine!
Equipment: I became a regular at the local hiking shops, learned about layering and merino wool socks, looked at several down jackets and got myself a camelback water system with an insulated tube – useful when things get cold. Hiking boots, four seasons sleeping bag, snack and water purification tablets, baby wipes, and an alcohol gel was essential… you need quite a bit of stuff! The Trip: I arrived in Moshi, Tanzania on Saturday 5 January 2019 after flying with KLM from Manchester, one of the airlines that land at Kilimanjaro airport.
I was picked up by a transfer vehicle and met the manager of the company I was going to use to
www.s41local.com
climb. The next day I met my guide Jonas and was also introduced to a lady who was looking to climb up Kilimanjaro without a group. After meeting we agreed she’d join my group with her own guide plus her porters, between us, a total of 14 people on our trek. We carried a basic rucksack with up to four litres of water, rain gear and a snack whilst the porters carried all the food and equipment (tent, sleeping bags etc) that we required while on the mountain. We also paid for a portable toilet to be carried and used at the camp sites! Each porter is allowed to carry 15kg up the mountain including our items, at every gate items are weighed to make sure they are within the weight limit. We had to register our name in a book at every campsite
The food was better than I thought, fruit, eggs and pasta, beef and chicken, as we climbed higher the altitude reduced our appetite.
The ascent started on day one which surprised me, we continued to climb until we summited, walking between four to eight hours in a day. ‘Pole, pole, slowly, slow’ they would say. If you walked too fast you could not breathe very well and had to rest to catch your breath.
We walked high to acclimatise but then returned to a lower level each day to sleep.
The biggest challenge was ‘The Barranco’. It rose over 830 feet above the Barranco valley and was quite a challenging, we had to use all four limbs at times.
Summit night was a challenge. It was very cold, and we started the climb at midnight on the 12 January, taking 10 and half hours to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro on the 13 January 2019. Then another four hours to descend to base camp. My water froze, the air was thin, and I was very tired. It was one of the hardest things I have ever done, and I would do it again but not in the near future!

Plastic’s not fantastic Words: Nicola Chapman Images: Steph's Suatainable Stuff
S
teph Mannion is creative, innovative and inventive, and has been trying to live more sustainably for some time, but it wasn’t until some life changes resulted in her being jobless, that her hobbies and interests converged - Steph’s Sustainable Stuff was born. Steph had been caring for a lady for 9 years - the lady died in April last year, around the same time that Steph’s mum died, and Steph found she didn’t have the emotional capacity to take on another caring role immediately.
During this time, she bumped into a friend with a stall on Chesterfield market, who suggested she share the stall and sell some of her crafts. Steph agreed and gathered up some of her creations to sell on the stall; twiddle muffs (knitted, crocheted or fabric tubes with accessories such as ribbons and buttons sewn on the inside and outside, keeping a person’s hands warm while they twiddle the bits and pieces (reducing agitation) she’d made for people with Alzheimer’s, coffee bags handmade bags that people can take into places selling loose coffee (e.g. Northern
Page 28
www.s41local.com
Tea Merchants) for refilling rather than buying coffee in plastic, veg bags for people to take to the shops to fill with vegetables - avoiding the need for a plastic bag. Steph got the bug and took her own stall on Chesterfield Market, standing every Saturday in New Square, opposite Dents.
Steph explains “When I started, I didn’t have much to sell, but the products I took were popular. This inspired me to widen my range and I started selling bags of soap nuts, that people can use as an alternative to washing powders or liquids, I buy the soap nuts in bulk and sell them in hand-made, reusable materials bags - with a smaller bag inside for using the soap nuts in the washing machine. You basically use 3 or 4 soap nuts in the washing machine drum, you can use the same nuts for about 4 washes. At £5 for approx. 50 washes, the price is comparable to buying washing products, yet there’s no plastic, your clothes smell and feel as clean, and the final product can be composted. I’ll also refill your soap nut bag again” “I believe eco-friendly shouldn’t come with a premium price tag, eco products should be accessible to all. If we want people to embrace eco friendly they shouldn’t be more expensive, so I work hard to make my products comparable and affordable. I buy things in bulk so I can sell them on at reasonable prices”.
“Whatever you do, however small – it all helps” Steph Mannion
As I talked to Steph it became clear how innovative she is, finding new ways to solve people’s challenges or reuse waste in new ethical ways. Steph explained “a friend working in catering was using large industrial sized tins of food and wondered whether I could use the empty tins.
"With my brother we designed and built rocket stoves; portable outdoor cooking devices using the tins, I took them to the stall and they proved a great hit for Christmas gifts. We’ve also designed a lightweight wooden drinks carrier, which carries up to 4 drinks at a time, with a deluxe version including a bulldog clip for carrying snacks." Originally designed for her brother to carry 4 pints of beer, it’s adaptable and also holds 4 bamboo coffee cups, like the ones she sells on her stall or some wine glasses.
On her stall Steph also refills washing up bottles, £2 a litre for a refill or £2.40 for a new environmentally friendly bottle, bars of shampoo, beeswax wrapping - a reusable covering to use as an alternative to cling film - which she also makes herself obtaining the beeswax from Roper’s honey - 10 minutes down the road from where she lives. I asked Steph for some top tips for people who want to start making a change and reducing their plastic consumption • Replacing cling film for the beeswax wrap (it freezes OK too) • Saying no plastic bags for vegetables
• Taking your own containers where you can • Refill washing up bottles .. from the stall
Buy online at Facebook Steph’s Sustainable Stuff, and in Etsy.com/StephsSustainables and she’ll post products or do local deliveries.
But I recommend you go and see her at the stall, she’s interesting and engaging and can offer you loads of helpful hints and tips, and explain how to use the products she sells, as we try and embrace new and less damaging ways of doing things. Don’t forget to tell her where you heard about her. FB: Steph's Sustainable Stuff

The MaddiFinn Cup A little football fun
Words: Neil Hutchinson Images: Neil Hutchinson
I
f you like watching football, love a good family day out and want to support some amazing charities then you need to get yourself to Staveley MWFC on the 12th of May @12pm for the MaddiFinn Cup!
The MaddiFinn Cup is named after two very special children, Maddison and Finlay Share. It’s unimaginable to think of one of your children having to battle a serious health concern but when it happens a second time it really impacts the family and support network. The strength and courage that both Maddison and Finlay showed can only be described as something epic, a real inspiration to all. The support the family received from Bloodwise and CLIC Sargent was an absolute blessing and so what better way to give something back than a football fundraiser (obviously Dad Richard Share and his pals were not the driving force behind the football element).
Page 30
The MaddiFinn Cup is in its third year and has raised a whopping £3,000 to date, what a fantastic achievement! This year the organisers are going big and hoping to raise way over £1,500. They really need the support of the local community to do this, head to the match, donate and enjoy (there will be some laughs) at the ‘mature’ players that think they still have what it takes to be footballers. The reigning Cup holders The Rangers take on The Victorian’s at Inkersall road, home of Staveley MWFC on 12 of May with a 12pm kick off, it’s free entry and there’s event a bouncy castle if football isn’t your thing (you’ll find me on the bouncy castle with the 8-year olds). There’s a penalty shootout too, what more could you ask for? The Rangers have won the last two matches, but I think The Victorian’s can level things up with a win this year! There’s only one way to find out…come along and enjoy a little football fun.

Young Enterprise Everyone's an entrepreneur Words: Bekah Anstey Images: Ian Daisley
I
work for Young Enterprise full time as an Area Manager and I absolutely love it, I get to support students with invaluable enterprise education. This is a big passion for me and something I will always see as being hugely important in my life. I want to support youngsters in believing that starting their own business is achievable and to do it while they are young (I’d say do not wait until you’re 37, working full time and have two children… it’s tough) This month, Young Enterprise held the North Derbyshire Area Showcase at the Chesterfield Library (massive thanks to Ian and Carol you’re fab!) I had five teams that were competing for the three top spots to go ahead and represent North Derbyshire at the County final. They all did an outstanding job, the teams were:
Kickers & Clickers - Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School iSurvive – Eckington School BeeReusable – St Marys RC High School MYE – Mount St Marys College Inspire Designs – Brookfield Community School Each team had to go through a vigorous process consisting of an interview with three local amazing judges, a trade stand and a 4-minute pitch to an audience of 100 guests. This is extremely daunting, but they all took it in their stride.
I saw some amazing products from T Shirts, customisable shoes, survival kits, gift packaging and 100% environmentally friendly food wrappers. Creativity at it’s best! The students now must do it all again, but better, at the County Final! I would love you to come along and support your local students at the next round of the competition, it will take place on the 9th of May at 6pm at The Winding Wheel in Chesterfield. The teams will be up against some stiff competition from Derby so please come along and show your support! Well done to all teams and a special thank you to our judges Izabella Edwards from Edwards Employment Solutions, Stacey Davies-Bowler from Pinewood Properties and David Beet from United Cast Bar, it’s a tough job and you did it fantastically. S41 Local Hero
Scott Timbrell AKA Mr Charity
Words: Bekah Anstey Images: Louise Timbrell
T
his month’s local hero really wasn’t a tough choice, I had several entries, but this name seems to come up time and time again when I talk to the local community about fundraisers. He is known in Chesterfield for being ‘Mr Charity’ a nickname I know he is extremely proud of. He’s selfless, community driven and a real softy when it comes to children’s charity. This month’s local hero is the one and only Scott Timbrell. Scott has always been a big supporter of charity, but he really came onto my radar back in 2014 when he took part in a ‘hunks in trunks’ charity car wash at The Olde House Pub. Dressed like someone from Baywatch (yes, he was sporting the red shorts) I thought ‘here we go we’ve got another poser’ but although he was definitely basking in the attention it also became very apparent, he has a heart of gold and was doing it for Ashgate Croft School (also to pose a bit). They raised £500 in total, what a fantastic effort!
I'm glad that Scott is getting recognition for all that he does, for helping so many local people. Tracy Staniforth - Luca's mum
Over the years Scott has raised a whopping £15,000 for various charities such as Ashgate Hospice, Ashgate Croft School, Air Ambulance and The Hereditary Breast Cancer Helpline. He’s taken part in a bike ride to Dagenham, The Chesterfield Marathon while pushing the lovely Luca in a wheelchair, Mr Heartthrob for Ashgate Hospice, a walk to Blackpool and many more I’m sure his wife Louise can’t remember. Page 32
www.s41local.com
Scott doesn’t stop at fundraising though, back in 2014 he decided out of the blue to put a Facebook status on that said he would match the number of likes received with Easter eggs and deliver them to the Nightingale Ward at Chesterfield Royal Hospital. He delivered 315 eggs to the children on that ward, what a legend! Now I’d like to say Scott is in training for his next big event, however I know he doesn’t really bother preparing physically or mentally he just turns up and gets on with it. He is about to take part in some very important fundraisers, the first is a 100 mile walk to Blackpool supporting Ashgate Hospice, Air Ambulance and The Hereditary Breast Cancer Helpline. The second is a three peaks challenge supporting 'Walk for Wendy'.

Links to all donation pages will be made available on the S41 Local Facebook page. All that is left for me to say is, Scott, thank you for supporting our local charities, we appreciate you!
We hope you carry on making a big difference in our community and lead the way for our future generations to raise lots of money for those in need of a helping hand.

alking down Elder Way on my way into the office I see first hand the amazing windows on the new Premier Inn, striking isn't a strong enough word to describe them. I wasn't at all surprised when Steve from MW Window Systems sent me the amazing images pictured below. Now windows and glazing aren't normally my thing however when you're approached to create an advert an expert I become. I've done lots of research and reviewed their website, some of the case studies they have are epic, go and check them out. Occupying a pivotal site in Chesterfield town centre, Elder Way is a landmark mixed-use leisure scheme, which is breathing life into the town’s famous 1930s, Mock-Tudor former Co-op. So no pressure when Steve was approached to work on the new development.

Selected by Jomast – one of the UK’s leading property specialists Steve and his team succesfully carried out the design, supply and installation of the primary and secondary glazing. The team clearly created sleek and unobtrusive design that really adds value to our Chesterfield town centre.
If you're in the market for some new windows with noise insulation, energy saving and security, combined with individual design tailored to every kind of home then MW Window Systems are for you. The range of windows and doors offer you much more than a view of outside.

Advertorial
A Passion for Care Samantha Houdmont, Clinical Director at Willowstone, explains why it's so important to her that they offer the best level of care at home. At three years old, I was shown outstanding passion and dedication for care. Nurses, every day, would show infinite compassion and patience for myself and my family when I received treatment for cancer. They inspired me to do the same. Following my recovery and remission, there wasn’t a member of my family that I didn’t practice my 'nursing skills' on. I remember my very first uniform that my Nan bought me, aged four, with bandages and special creams guaranteed to make anyone feel better, even family pets were 'nursed' back to health! Our old dog patiently sighing as her paws were bandaged for the fourth time in a day! I started my nursing career in early 2003, and after qualifying to practice as a nurse, I started a job in a nursing home, moved to A&E for a year and then spent eight years in the community, nursing people in their own homes, which I loved. Following my community role, I specialised in palliative care, and worked for a national charity in the community out-of-hours team. It is during my time here that my own Nan became ill and I spent my time working and travelling back to nurse her. My Nan was the strongest, most beautiful person in the world, and I was privileged to be with her, not only in the decline of her health, but also when she died - at home, where she wanted to be and surrounded by the people that loved her. Following this I took some time out and worked back in A&E and on a few general wards in the hospital. I was struck by how many people in hospital didn’t need to be there - they just didn’t have the right support at home. It was here that I decided to open my own care company. I want to spread the word that with careful planning and support people can stay safely in their homes and live independently. They can be supported in their decisions with staff that have a passion to work collaboratively with families, friends and anyone involved in that person’s care.
At Willowstone we ask how clients like things done. We encourage people to do what they can, with us ready to assist when needed. Our assessments of needs are carried out by qualified nurses and reviewed regularly. We involve the people that are important to the client, so they can make joint decisions. This particularly benefits people with dementia, and at Willowstone, our staff are all trained Dementia Friends, a campaign by the Alzheimers Society. We are part of the Care Quality Campaign and write guest blogs. We support John’s Campaign, where families are encouraged to accompany their loved one into hospital should they need it, so that they can have an advocate when they are feeling vulnerable. When we visit someone, we offer a minimum of one-hour calls, building our relationship and understanding clients’ needs. At Willowstone we want to be known for our high standards of care. We don’t want to be the biggest company out there - but we want to be the best. What sets us apart from the competition? • We are a nurse led service and we want to promote independence at home and reduce hospital admissions for social reasons. • Our care plans and assessments are carried out by a nurse. • We promote empowerment through education, communication, choice and candour. • We listen and collaborate with clients and their families, for true person-centred care. • Your loved one will be assigned a small team of carers (no more than four) so you have continuity of care. All staff are highly trained and paid a fair wage, with travel time, training and mileage included. We recognise that our staff are our biggest asset, and well looked after staff provide better care. Call us today if you would like more information or check out our website www.willowstonecare.co.uk to read our recent blogs.

Charity starts with everyone How sponsoring children opened my eyes Words: David Paterson Images: David Paterson
I
n February last year a group of us travelled to Ghana to visit children sponsored by people in our church, we set off with two large suitcases full of goodies and the bare minimum when it came to clothing. After a very long journey we eventually arrived in Kumasi which is a city in the Ashanti region of Ghana. We had a night to get our bearings and then the next morning we were up bright and early to visit the first village, we were extremely excited but a little nervous. On our approach the village had a wonderful brass band for our arrival, the children were there to greet us, and the mums were on hand to show their appreciation. After a few minutes we were introduced to Ishmael who is five years old and a little shy, he had only just found out that we had decided to sponsor an extra two children the night before, so he was a little bewildered.
Page 38
We were very fortunate to be able to meet Ishmaels family, they were all so grateful and happy to have us in their home. They lived in the one room that was separated by a curtain, this gave them a private bedroom. All they needed was a mattress, some crockery and a few chairs. The family and children were so happy with so little it really makes you think about the luxuries we have back home that just aren’t needed. As we were leaving, we handed out lots of sweet treats, one little boy had received a toy car and the look of joy on his face will never leave me. Such small things bring so much joy to these families. That night as we were travelling through Kumasi, I saw a lady at the side of the road. It was pitch black and she had two children with her, she was cleaning plastic bottles. This really hit home.

The next day we went to Kofi’s village, Kofi is a little boy who is eight years old who we have sponsored for some time now and written lots of letters to each other. As we pulled up, all the families were singing and dancing, it was wonderful. Kofi found us in a second and gave us the biggest hugs you can imagine. This really made our trip!
A local chief made a speech that I will always remember ‘I thought I was dreaming when I saw you. No-one has ever done anything for our village or cared about our children’s future, Thank you’
We got to visit Kofi’s home and meet all his family and neighbours. We were all sat together talking and sharing stories, Kofi’s uncle who is classed as the head of the family said to us ‘out of all the children you chose Kofi, we are so grateful to you and my family is very blessed’ He then walked over and kissed the backs of our hands, it was the most humbling moment of my life and one I will never forget.
This visit was the most amazing experience of my life and nothing will ever match it (but don’t tell our grandchildren) I believe that my story of the trip needs to be shared as often we get carried away with buying things we just don’t need. What we do need is community spirit and to be kind. If you would some information on how you can sponsor a child in need, then please get contact us at:
Lifehouse Church Chatsworth Road S40 2AN T: 01246 237 815 Or if you live in Dunston, keep a look out for me delivering S41 Local Magazine!
We finally visited two further children that we sponsor in the last village, Laiza is six and Asamoah is five. Sponsorship had made a huge difference to the lives of these two children, they had both been in bad health and our sponsor money had allowed them the treatment they both so badly needed. This is my ‘why’, I feel it is so important to try to help as it is life changing for the children and such a small amount for us.
